Christina Applegate Going On Vacation, Playing Ed Helms’ Wife

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christina-applegateChristina Applegate is currently back in the world of Anchorman shooting The Legend Continues, and now she’s got another comedy up her sleeves, as he is in final talks to join the cast of New Line Cinema’s Vacation reboot, alongside Ed Helms, according to THR.

The story is essentially a hybrid of a sequel and a reboot, with Ed Helms portraying a grown-up Rusty Griswold, who takes his family on a vacation to Walley World, just like his childhood trip portrayed in 1983’s Vacation. Christina Applegate will play Rusty’s wife who may be losing interest in her husband.

Rusty Griswold was portrayed by various different actors in the original franchise, including Anthony Michael Hall in Vacation, Jason Lively in European Vacation, Johnny Galecki in Christmas Vacation, and Ethan Embry in Vegas Vacation. There’s also been talk of Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo returning for the movie, but so far this hasn’t been confirmed.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein will make their directorial debuts with the movie, working from their own screenplay. It isn’t known when shooting will begin.

The film sees two young friends recruiting a dance crew and staging a talent show in a bid to save their much loved youth club from demolition. But it’s not all plain sailing (not least because one of them can’t dance!

The cast includes Theo Stevenson (Horrid Henry) and Akai (winner, Got To Dance 2009), Ashley Jensen (Extras, Ugly Betty), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered), Ashley Walters (Anuvahood) and Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud, to name but a few.

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s worldwide blockbuster, Despicable Me, delighted audiences around the globe in 2010, grossing more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history. Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy animated adventure featuring the return of Gru (Steve Carell), the girls, the unpredictably hilarious minions…and a host of new and outrageously funny characters.’

First Video Posted From The Godzilla Set

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday it was announced that Godzilla had started shooting, and to prove it, director Gareth Edwards has posted a short video from the set, to say they’ve just finished the first shot, which appears to take place in a Japanese airport.

He certainly doesn’t reveal much about the movie, although it has been promised this will be a far cry from 1998’s Roland Emmerich take on Godzilla, instead sticking closer to the Japanese original, but with a modern, more grounded feel.

It’ll be in cinemas summer 2014.

Iron Man 3 Composite IMAX Poster Released

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iron-man-3-imax-posterThere have been an awful lot of Iron Man 3 posters released, and now we’ve got another one, which is essentially a composite of the previously released character posters. It’s pretty cool, even if Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin does look like he’s randomly floating in the background.

And while we’re talking Iron Man 3, Joss Whedon has seen the film and commented that it’s made writing The Avengers 2 a bit more daunting for him. Marvel had honcho Kevin Feige told 2 Kids And A Coupon that, “We have what I think is the biggest, you know, most action packed finale we’ve had. I showed the film to Joss Whedon, who is our writer-director of Avengers, is currently working on Avengers 2, and he saw the finale of this and he goes, now what am I supposed to do now?  What am I going to do in Avengers 2?”

Whether that’s just because the ending is so huge or if it effects Tony Stark’s story in a way that will impact on the next Avengers movie isn’t known. Iron Man 3 hits UK cinemas on April 26th and the US on May 3rd.

Goosebumps Movie Gets Gulliver’s Travels Director Rob Letterman

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rob-LettermanR.L. Stein’s Goosebumps is one of the most successful book series in history, selling more than 300 million copies worldwide. It’s surprising therefore that Hollywood hasn’t made a movie version before now – although it’s not for lack of trying, as it’s been mooted for years.

Now it’s inching closer to reality, as Sony Pictures is in negotiations with director Rob Letterman (Gulliver’s Travels) to take the helm on their Goosebumps adaptation, according to Deadline. Last January Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Slayer, Turbo) was hired to tackle the screenplay.

He’s just the latest on writer on the project, as this attempt to take Stein’s series to the screen has been in development since 2008, with writers such as Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia) and Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski (Monopoly) previously taking a crack at the screenplay.

Stein’s books all have different plots and characters, which is probably why it’s been difficult to adapt into a film. Many have plays homage to classic horror films such as Night of the Living Dead, replacing gruesome genre elements with kid-friendly jokes. At the moment, nothing is known about the story for this big-screen adaptation.

Rob Letterman directed the animated hits Shark Tale and Monsters Vs. Aliens before making his live-action debut with Gulliver’s Travels.

Disney Plans Pete’s Dragon Remake, With David Lowery & Toby Halbrooks Writing

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

petes-dragonEvery studio likes to look into its back catalogue for potential remakes. Now Disney’s got another one, as they’ve put a new version of 1977 classic Pete’s Dragon into development. Deadline reports that Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ writer-director David Lowery and producer Toby Halbrooks have been hired write the screenplay. Lowery may also direct.

The original movie featured a mixture of live-action and animation. It was about a young boy and his (animated) pet dragon who run away to a new town to escape Pete’s abusive adoptive parents. It isn’t known if this remake will feature the same blend of live-action and hand-drawn animation, although we’d imagine they’ll be going CG this time. It’s also said that the story is being completely reinvented, discarding the musical elements of the plot.

Lowery does seems a slightly unexpected person for this assignment, as his feature directorial debut, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, is a gritty drama starring Rooney Mara, Ben Foster, and Casey Affleck. However Disney must have liked his take on Pete’s Dragon.

Shailene Woodley Circles The Fault in Our Stars

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shailene-woodleyAlthough she hasn’t quite signed on yet, The Descendants star Shailene Woodley has been offered the lead role of Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars, for director Josh Boone (Stuck in Love).

She’d play Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenage girl stricken with cancer who falls for a boy in her support group.

Josh Boone commented on the casting, “During our exhaustive search to find Hazel Grace Lancaster, I saw some stunning auditions by today’s finest young actresses. Over 250 girls read for the part, but it wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time. It was like lightning striking. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”

Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber ((500) Days of Summer) wrote the Black Listed screenplay, based on John Green’s novel. Green commented, “I am absolutely thrilled that Shailene will be playing Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars. It means a lot to me that she is a fan of the book, and I know from our conversations that she has a profound understanding of Hazel. Watching her audition, I felt like Hazel Grace Lancaster was talking to me. It was eerie-and very exciting.”

Woodley’s star is certainly on the rise, as she will next be seen in The Spectacular Now, set for release later this year. She recently shot the role of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and she will soon move on to the lead role in young adult fantasy adaptation Divergent.

Alex Garland To Direct Ex Machina

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alex-garlandAlex Garland made his name with book such as The Beach, but in the last few years he’s been concentrating on the movies, writing films such as 28 Days Later…, Sunshine and Dredd. Now he’s heading behind the camera to direct, with THR reporting that Garland is set to make his directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller Ex Machina.

Garland also wrote the screenplay which is about a billionaire programmer who chooses one of his young employees to spend a week at his lavish estate and test his latest creation: the world’s first artificially intelligent female robot. What’s the betting that it doesn’t go too well?

Scott Rudin and Eli Bush are producing alongside DNA Films’ Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich. Production is slated to begin in either the summer or autumns on a $15 million budget. The movie has no connection to another project called Ex Machina which is in development, based on the Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris comic book. That one’s about a superhero who becomes mayor of New York City.

Director Lynne Ramsay Abandons Jane Got a Gun By Not Showing Up For The Shoot

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lynne-ramsayWhile actors and directors come and go from movies all the time before they start shooting, it’s very unusual for a director simply to not turn up for the first day of shooting. However that’s what’s happened with Jane Got A Gun, as while the cast and crew assembled yesterday to make the movie in Arizona, director Lynne Ramsay (We Need To Talk About Kevin) didn’t show up. It was later confirmed that she had dropped out.

The film’s producers, including star Natalie Portman are currently scrambling to find a replacement. Here’s what fellow producer Scott Steindorff had to say in a statement, “I have millions of dollars invested, we’re ready to shoot, we have a great script, crew and cast. I’m shocked and so disappointed someone would do this to 150 crew members who devoted so much time, energy, commitment and loyalty to a project, and then have the director not show up. It is insane somebody would do this to other people. I feel more for the crew and their families, but we are keeping the show going on, directors are flying in, and a replacement is imminent.”

The producer also added that he has retained celebrity lawyer Marty Singer to explore legal ramifications of Ramsay’s actions. “She was pay or play [meaning she’d be paid even if the movie wasn’t made], and Marty Singer has been retained. My focus is on making this movie, but I will protect all my rights. This comes down to an irresponsible act by one person.”

Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, Jude Law, and Rodrigo Santoro are all set to star in this Western, written by Brian Duffield. It’s about a wife (Natalie Portman) whose husband returns home, barely alive after being shot eight times. She seeks the help of an ex-lover to defend her home when the gang of outlaws who shot her husband comes to finish what they started

Instead of shooting as planned on the Santa Fe, New Mexico set yesterday, the cast and crew spent the day rehearsing. The producers plan on keeping the film afloat until a new director can be found. It’ll also be interesting to see if Ramsay is ever given funding to make a movie again. (Source: Deadline)
