Night at the Museum 3 Moves Forward, With Ben Stiller & Director Shawn Levy Returning

February 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Night-At-The-Museum2-pic2The Night At The Museum movies have proved very lucrative for 20th Century Fox, so it’s not surprising that they’d like a third adventure. Now that movie is going forward with Coming Soon reporting that Ben Stiller is set to return as security guard Larry Daley, with Shawn Levy once more directing. The studio must be pretty confident it’ll happen, as they’ve already slated a December 25the, 2014 release date.

A third adventure was first mooted back in December 2010, when screenwriter Thomas Lennon, who wrote the first two films with Ben Garant, hinted that a sequel was being written.

There’s no info on what the story will be this time around, but it’s fair to assume that Larry Daley will once more be dealing with museum exhibits coming to life after the lights go off in the evening. The first film was set at New York’s Museum of Natural History, while the secong moved the action to Washington’s Smithsonian. It’s not known if a third museum will be involved in the new movie.

Melissa McCarthy Plans Three New Comedies

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Melissa-McCarthyMelissa McCarthy really broke out with Bridesmaids, but she’s had to take her time capitalising on that due to the fact she has to spend a lot of her year making the sitcom Mike & Molly. Even so she’s added three new films to her slate, according to THR (which could suggests she’s hoping to leave Mike & Molly behind).

Two of the movie are set up at Universal while the third are set up over at Fox. The first has no title yet, but is based on a character McCarthy created called Michelle Darnell. She’ll also co-write the script with her hubby Ben Falcone and fellow Groundlings comedy group member Steve Mallory.

She’s also planning the family film Cousin Irv From Mars, adapted from an upcoming children’s book by New Yorker cartoonist and former Seinfeld writer Bruce Eric Kaplan. It’s about a boy and his cousin, who is from outer space. Kaplan will write the screenplay while McCarthy will star.

The final film is Just Do It, based on Douglas Brown’s Just Do It: How One Couple Turned Off the TV and Turned On their Sex Lives for 101 Days (No Excuses!). It could certainly make for a saucy film as the book is a memoir following a couple that attempted to rekindle their marriage with a 101 day sexual marathon. McCarthy and Falcone are both set to work on the script, with McCarthy once more planning to star.

That’ll certainly keep her busy, especially as she’s also got the likes of Identity Thief and The Heat to promote in the next few months, with her comedy Tammy also due to shoot this year.

First Poster For Joon-ho Bong’s Snowpiercer Debuts

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

snowpiercer-quad2013 is the year of Korean helmers making their English language debut. We’ve already had The Good, the Bad, the Weird director Kim Ji-woon’s The Last Stand, and soon Oldboy’s Park Chan-wook will bring us Stoker. The third helmer coming from Asia to English-speaking realms is Bong Joon-ho, director of The Host and Mother.

He’s made Snowpiercer, and now the first proper poster for the post-apocalyptic movie has debuted, via Twitch, which you can see above (click on it for a larger version). The film stars Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Song Kang-ho, John Hurt, Alison Pill, Octavia Spencer and Ewen Bremner.

The movie is set in a world covered in snow and ice, with a group of characters stranded on a train dubbed the Snowpiercer, who all struggle to co-exist. Joon-ho Bong is directing from a script he co-wrote with Kelly Masterson (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead), adapted from Benjamin Legrand and Jacuqes Lob’s graphic novel.

No release date is currently set.

Colin Firth Joins Nicole Kidman In Before I Go To Sleep

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firthColin Firth is going to be dealing with memory loss, as Variety reports that he’s teaming up with fellow Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman for the movie Before I Go To Sleep, which will be directed by Rowan Joffe (Brighton Rock).

The premise is rather 50 First Dates turned into a thriller, following a woman with amnesia who wakes up each day and must re-start her memories by finding out who she is from a journal that she keeps. However ‘As terrifying new truths emerge she is forced to question everyone around her.’

Firth will play Kidman’s husband in the film. The premise sounds as if he might be lying to her and creating a world in her journals that isn’t really true, but we’ll have to wait for the movie to see whether he really is in on it.

Mark Strong and Anne-Marie Duff will also star, although there’s no word on their characters. Shooting kicks off at the end of the month in London.

Han Solo & Boba Fett Getting Their Own Star Wars Movies?

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Han-SoloThe millisecond it was revealed that Disney had bought Lucasfilm, the rumour mill went into overdrive, and as a result it’s been a good idea to treat any info that hasn’t come from official sources with a healthy dose of scepticism.

A few days ago there was a suggestion that Yoda would be getting a standalone movie that will be separate from the main new trilogy that we do know Disney is planning.

Now EW reports that some of their sources say that a Boba Fett movie and a Han Solo movie are also in the works, and will be released before the end of 2019. The Han Solo movie would be an origin story looking at the character’s early days, while Boba Fett’s film will likely be set somewhere during the timeline of the original trilogy. By setting them with the era of the earlier film, the idea is they can also include other characters such as Darth Vader and Jabba The Hutt.

Of course none of this has been confirmed by Disney, although a few days ago Disney CEO Bob Iger did say that the company was indeed in the early stages of planning some standalone Star Wars movies to go alongside the main new trilogy, which will be released sometime between 2015 and 2021. What he didn’t give was any hint about what those standalone films will be about – and even if Han Solo and Boba Fett movies are being planned, they’re still in the very early stages and a long way from getting the greenlight.

Matt Smith & Eva Mendes Will Help Ryan Gosling To Catch A Monster

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-smithFew people would have expected the worlds of Doctor Who and Ryan Gosling to crossover, but that’s just what’s happening as Variety reports that Ryan has cast Matt Smith in his fantasy noir directorial/screenwriting debut, How To Catch A Monster. Bloody Disgusting also suggests Gosling has handed a role in the movie to his girlfriend, Eva Mendes.

How to Catch a Monster is said to weave elements of fantasy noir and suspense into a modern day fairytale. Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy (Christina Hendricks), a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and her son must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive. It all sounds a bit weird, but hopefully Gosling’s script will make sense when we see the movie.

Smith will play the male lead, although there’s no news on exactly who his character will be. The film marks Smith’s Hollywood debut. Mendes meanwhile will play Cat, who’s described as a prominent member of the Big Bad Wolf Club. Although what a Big Bad Wolf Club is hasn’t been revealed.

The movie starts shooting this spring.

J.J. Abrams Plans Portal & Half-Life Films

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jj-abramsJJ Abrams seems to want to get into the Guinness Book Of Records for being the busiest man on the planet, as he’s busy finishing Star Trek Into Darkness, has signed on to make Star Wars: Episode VII, as well as developing a seemingly endless slate of movies through his Bad Robot Production Company.

Now he’s got a couple more major movies on his plate, as he’s in the early stages planning movies based on Valve’s hit video games Portal and Half-Life. The director appeared at the 2013 DICE convention, alongside Valve co-founder Gabe Newell, where he spoke about the video game adaptations, as well as a video game idea that he wants Valve to work on.

Gabe Newell commented, “We’re super excited about that and we also want to talk about making movies, either a Portal movie or a Half-Life movie.”

Half-Life, which was first released in 1998, is about theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman, who opens a gateway between his New Mexico laboratory and another world known as Xen, which is inhabited by terrifying monsters. Portal is a spin-off of Half-Life, which follows a test subject tasked with finding a rival company’s device that can open portals into space.

Abrams was keen to point things are still in the very early stages, saying “It’s as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets. Which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas. And both a Portal and Half-Life movie are things I want to see. We’re also aware of the cautionary tales of movies that became games and vice versa. Our goal here is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script – just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with.”

It’s still a very long way from happening, but there are a lot of people out there who’d love to see Abrams take on both Portal or Half Life (even if he’s more likely to produce than direct). (Source: Variety)

Jennifer Aniston, Mark Duplass & Ben Kingsley Going To A Convention

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennifer-anistonJennifer Aniston, Mark Duplass and Ben Kingsley certainly make an interesting cast for a comedy. Variety reports they’re getting together for Convention, which a press release describes as a ‘mind-bending comedy, embarking on a Charlie Kaufman-esque journey that puts them between the worlds of the cardboard box industry and inter-dimensional molecular mayhem’.

The film comes from Justin Reardon, who has just finished his directorial debut, A Many Splintered Thing, starring Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan.

Convention is about mild-mannered Paul (Duplass) and his feisty sister Abby (Aniston), who set out to change the box storage world with Paul’s invention of the 5-sided box. Breaking all the laws of physics with their new product, their fiercest competitors, including maniacal box magnate Bobby Schroedinger (Kingsley) and Mathematical Construct, an atomic guardian of the natural order of universal mathematical balance, try to stop them securing the deal of their lives – oh, and ripping a giant apocalyptic whole in the fabric of the universe. On discovering the damage he’s causing, Paul must race against time to put the galaxy back in order and save the girl of his dreams.

It’s certainly sounds ambitious, but whether it really can channel the madness of Charlie Kaufman movies such as Being John Malkovich, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is yet to be seen. The movie is currently looking for backers at the Berlin Film Festival.

Bryan Cranston & Elizabeth Olsen Circling Godzilla

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bryan-CranstonWhile Godzilla has been in the works for a couple of years, it feels as if everything’s been put into a bit of a last minute rush, with Frank Darabont still rewriting the script and only one star attached at the moment – Aaron Johnson – even though production is supposed to start in Canada in March.

Now a couple more potential cast members are circling the project, with Variety reporting that Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen are in early talks to star in the movie. However, it’s unlikely that any deals will be finalised until the completed screenplay has been turned in – which certainly does leave everything until the last minute.

No character details or plot information has been released, so we don’t know who Cranston, Olsen, or indeed Aaron Johnson will be playing, although earlier info has said this plans to be a more ‘realistic’ take on the Godzilla idea. Gareth Edwards is directing, with a May 16th, 2014 release already set.

Fast & Furious 6 Extended Trailer – The tryes are screeching once again

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We got our first look at Fast & Furious 6 earlier this week with a Superbowl spot, but not Unviersal wants to get fans even more excited by releasing a three minute trailer, giving us plenty of action and info on the plot.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in Fast & Furious 6. Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favourites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.

‘Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the run has left their lives incomplete.

‘Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organisation of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.’

The movie hits cinemas May 24th.
