Joseph Gordon-Levitt Also Up For Guardians of the Galaxy Lead

January 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Dark Knight RisesJust before Christmas we reported that Jim Sturgess and Chuck star Zachary Levi were the frontrunners for the the lead role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and now there’s another name to add to the list, according to Deadline, as Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also in the mix for the role of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord.

It may seem a bit soon for Gordon-Levitt to jump from DC’s The Dark Knight Rises to a Marvel property, but Joseph is a comic book lover, and while some have suggested he could follow up his Dark Knight role to become Batman in Justice League, there’s been little indication either he or DC is actually planning to do that.

Peter Quill is a NASA astronaut who learns that his true father is actually an alien, which leads him on a journey into outer space. With a sentient space ship, he becomes the Star-Lord, an intergalactic cop who serves as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

James Gunn is directing from his own screenplay, a release date of August 1st, 2014 is already set.

Mama Short Film – Guillermo Del Toro introduces the short that inspired the upcoming horror

January 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The short Mama may only be two and a half minutes long, but that was enough to suggest to Guillermo Del Toro it would be worth backing director Andrés Muschietti to turn it into a feature length film. That’s partly because it contains what Del Toro says is one of the scariest scenes he’s ever seen.

Now the short has popped up online, complete with an intro from Guillermo, to help prepare us for the release of the movie version – which reaches the US on January 18th and the UK on February 22nd.

Here’s the synopsis for the feature-length movie: ‘Guillermo del Toro presents Mama, a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night. Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

‘As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.’

Monsters University TV Spot – Fancy joining Mike & Sully at monster school?

January 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new US TV spot for Monsters University has arrived, giving us a fun intro to the movie, which follows Mike & Sully from Monsters Inc. during their time at college. The spot is put together like a short promo for the University itself, although with more monstrous students than normal colleges.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University stars the vocal talents of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray and Peter Sohn and is directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae.’

The film reaches UK cinemas on July 21st.

January 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Good Dinosaur concept artPixar always has a lot of movies in the works – usually because each one takes so long to get from the bud of an idea to something ready for cinemas. Now Pixar has given us a look at concept art for several of their upcoming films, courtesy of a holiday card.

The images gives us our first real view of anything from Bob Peterson‘s The Good Dinosaur (due out 2014), which sees massive dinos living alongside humans, Pete Docter’s film that takes place inside the mind (possibly called The Inside Out and due out 2015), and Lee Unkrich’s untitled movie takes place on the Mexican Day of the Dead. Jeremy Strong Heads For Parkland As Lee Harvey Oswald

January 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jeremy-StrongJeremy Strong had a pretty good 2012, scoring roles in Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty as well as the upcoming Robot & Frank. He’s continuing that run by booking a part as one of history’s most infamous killers, JFK’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, according to Variety.

Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton, Jacki Weaver, Zac Efron and Marcia Gay Harden are already set for the movie, which is based on the book Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, by renowned author and former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi. The screenplay comes from Peter Landesman, who will also make make his directorial debut with Parkland.

The film recounts the dramatic true story of the chaotic events that occurred at Parkland Hospital in Dallas on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22nd 1963. JFK was taken to the hospital, where they worked on him for some time, hoping to save his life, even though it was hopeless.

The film will presumably also look at the assassination itself, as Lee Harvey Oswald didn’t get to Parkland that day. He had to wait to go to the same hospital until November 24th, when he was shot by Jack Ruby. He died at Parkland during surgery (Ruby also died at the hospital four years later).

The film, to be shot in Austin, Texas is destined for a 2013 US theatrical release around the 50th anniversary of the assassination.

First Six Minutes Of Maniac Online – Elijah Wood turns killer in the violent remake

December 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As Maniac is a remake of a 1980 video nasty horror, you wouldn’t think Cannes would be the best place to premiere it, but last May it was audiences at the French festival who got the first look at the Frank Khalfoun (P2) directed movie. It’ll reach UK screens on March 15th, but if you fancy taking a look at Elijah Wood as a mannequin store owner killer, the first six minutes of the film are now online.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

‘A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in present-day LA, MANIAC is a re-boot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made – an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiralling nightmare of a killer and his victims.’

John Dies at the End Anti-Piracy Trailer – Download it and you’ll die!

December 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John Dies At The End looks like it’ll be a lot of fun, but if you were planning on pirating it, you might want to think again as you may not survive downloading an illegal copy of the movie!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In JOHN DIES AT THE END, it’s all about the Soy Sauce, a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. Users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John (Rob Mayes) and David (Chase Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.
‘Adapted from David Wong’s audacious trans-genre horror novel, JOHN DIES AT THE END is written and directed by Don Coscarelli (BUBBA HO-TEP) and also stars Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Paul Giamatti.’

It’s due to reach the UK on March 22nd.

Skyfall Becomes The UK’s First £100 Million Grossing Movie

December 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Skyfall-PosterA lot of people thought it would many years before a filmed gross £100 million at the UK box office, and just a few months ago if you’d said the one to do it would be a Bond movie, most people would have simply laughed at you. However Skyfall has done just that, with Sony & MGM revealing that the Sam Mendes directed movie has now taken £100,460,679 in the UK and Ireland, becoming the first film to ever pass that milestone.

It comes at the same time as the film has crossed $1 billion worldwide, joining a select band of less that 15 movies to ever reach that level (although it is 2012’s third film to do so after Avengers and Dark Knight Rises).

Skyfall’s UK gross of course means it’s now the highest grossing film ever in Britain, overtaking Avatar’s $94 million. The previous highest grossing Bond outing was Casino Royale, which took £55 million. As Skyfall isn’t far off doubling that, it really is an astonishing achievement.

Hobbit Takes Weekend US Box Office, But Les Miserables & Django Still Strong

December 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Hobbit-poster-1Despite some stiff competition from newbies Les Miserables and Django Unchained, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey held them them off to top the box office for a third weekend, taking another $32 million. That takes its US total past the $200 million mark, while worldwide it moves past $600 million.

Although the new entries couldn’t beat The Hobbit, Les Miserables, Django Unchained and Parental Guidance have all outpaced most people’s expectations since their Christmas Day release. Django took second place over the weekend with $30 million and $64 million since its release. With many expecting the film to have a strong awards run, it should continue to do well over the coming weeks.

Les Miserables was in third spot with $28 million and $67 million since its release. It’s one of the strongest starts ever for a musical and while the film began to tire after its incredibly strong first couple of days, it still suggests the movie will have legs over the coming weeks, especially if it scores a few Oscar nominations.

The Bette Midler and Billy Crystal comedy Parental Guidance also had a stronger than expected showing with $14.8 million over the weekend and $29.5 million since Christmas. Although not an amazing take, it’s good for a family comedy with older leads and has had decent reaction from audiences.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 28th-30th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $32.9 $222.7
2 Django Unchained $30.6 $64.0
3 Les Miserables $28.0 $67.4
4 Parental Guidance $14.8 $29.5
5 Jack Reacher $14.0 $44.6
6 This Is 40 $13.1 $37.1
7 Lincoln $7.5 $132.0
8 The Guilt Trip $6.7 $21.1
9 Monsters, Inc (3D) $6.3 $18.4
10 Rise Of The Guardians $4.9 $90.2
