Mark Wahlberg’s American Desperado Gets Writer William Monahan

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

william-monahanWilliam Monahan is going to be a busy guy, as he’s currently putting together his second directorial outing, Mojave, and now The Departed screenwriter has agreed to re-team with Mark Wahlberg on the long gestating film, American Desperado, according to Deadline.

The film is based on American Desperado: My Life As A Cocaine Cowboy by Evan Wright and Jon Roberts. It’s about Robert’s life as a cocaine smuggler as part of the Medellin Cartel. Wahlberg hopes to play the main character himself, as well as produce.

Evan Wright was previously writing the screenplay, but Monahan has now been brought in to bring some of the talent he has with thrillers set in real-world scenarios. Peter Berg was once attached to helm, but at the moment the movie has no director.

Chilly Look At Disney’s Frozen With Some New Concept Art

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Frozen-concept-art-pic1
After many years in development, Disney’s Snow Queen tale, Frozen, is finally due to arrive in cinemas December 2013, and to prepare us, the studio has released some rather cool looking concept art, which you can see above (click on it for a larger version), and a few more story details.

Here is the synopsis: ‘When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.’

Co-directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have been talking about the image in an interview with EW, saying “We wanted to push it to the extreme. The unnatural quality of the ice emphasises this is not, you know, sky-made ice, but ice made by someone.”

The person controlling the wind and ice is Elsa, and to further the idea it’s ice that was made by a person, the film will have a subtle snowflake pattern embedded in the backgrounds. ”You’ll see that shape throughout,” Buck says. “It’s very subtle, but that’s basically [evidence of] Elsa’s magic. That’s her signature.”

As for heroine Anna, Lee says, “Anna is a very relatable character to those of us who are not superheroes. She’s wonderfully flawed, but fearless. And wants to do the right thing. Those are the characters I love.” She adds, “From the Kristoff angle, we were trying to get at what it’s like to be a guy, trying to understand women – basically.”

Director Olivier Megaton Is Gonna Be Taking Gotham

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Olivier-MegatonOlivier Megaton may have chosen a silly name (he was born Olivier Fontana), but he’s had plenty of success directing Transporter 3, Colombiana and Taken 2. Now he’s planning a new action-thriller, Taking Gotham, according to Deadline.

Thomas Kelly (Blue Bloods) has come up with the screenplay, which is based on the true story of an NYPD unit that was created to stop a spate of violent robberies (in case you didn’t know Gotham isn’t just where Batman lives, it’s another nickname for New York). However, a sting operation goes wrong and the police department decide to cut all ties with the undercover officers, who are then forced to go in deeper in order to clear their names.

Nicolai Fuglsig was previously attached to direct, although a deal was never finalised. Casting will begin immediately, suggesting it won’t be too long before this one starts shooting.

While most had thought Disney had given up on the idea of making a third Tron movie, last week it was revealed they’d hired Eragon writer Jesse Wigutow to rewrite the script and are still hoping to get the movie off the ground.

Now Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund has confirmed to NextMovie that he will star in the the third Tron film. While doing press for On the Road, he said, “Yeah, are we gonna break this now? Disney’s very excited. That’s about that. You know, yeah, I’m very excited, Disney’s very excited.”

Joseph Kosinski is still set to return to direct, with sources indicating that this sequel may start principal photography in 2014. While Tron: Legacy was seen by many as a disappointment, it did earn more than $400 million at the worldwide box office, suggesting a third film might well be worth making from Disney’s point of view.

Pacific Rim Trailer – Giant monsters and robots, what more do you want?

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pacific Rim look like it could be an awful lot of fun. Just the idea is great – 300ft tall monsters are spewing out of a portal deep beneath the Pacific and attacking the coast, and so humanity fights back with gargantuan robots piloted by people. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived, which makes it look even better, shot through with Guillermo Del Toro’s signature style.

It’s a movie that’s going to be told on a massive scale, with huge amounts of very cool special effects. Thankfully the trailer also gives us a little bit of the plot, suggesting someone is sending these monsters and we don’t know who.

The film is due out July 12th, 2013, but enjoy the trailer and new poster above and below.pacific-rim-new-poster

Fresh G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer – Channing Tatum is back in action

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When GI Joe: Retaliation’s release was delayed from last August to next March, the official reason was so that they could convert it to 3D. However many wondered if there were major problems with the movie, which seemed to be confirmed when reshoots were ordered. However it now seems that the main issue was that Paramount made a major miscalculation about Channing Tatum.

He was the main star of the first GI Joe film, but then they decided that while he’d be in the follow-up (his contract meant he had little choice in the matter), he’d be majorly sidelined. Then he became one of the biggest stars around thanks to the likes of Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street, and so the reshoots were apparently mainly about reinserting him as a main character. That’s noticeable is this new trailer, as in earlier marketing Tatum was pretty much invisible – he didn’t even make it into many of the posters or trailers at all. Now he’s very visible at the beginning and end of this new trailer, alongside newbies Bruce Willis and The Rock. The film hits UK cinemas March 27th, 2013.

You’ll also notice that London isn’t going to come out of GI Joe: Retaliation very well.

warm-bodies-new-poster1
The recent trailer for Warm Bodies made it look a lot of fun, and now we’ve got a quintet of new poster (via the film’s Facebook page) to further our anticipation. The film is due out February 8th 2013, suggesting star Nicholas Hoult it going to be having a ridiculously busy first few months of next years, as he’s got to promote bother this movie and Jack The Giant Slayer, as well as film X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

Here’s the Warm Bodies synopsis: ‘WARM BODIES is an upcoming 2013 romantic zombie film based on Isaac Marion’s popular novel of the same name. Directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50), the film stars Nicholas Hoult (Hank McCoy/Beast in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class) and Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four).

Ace New The Wolverine Motion Poster Debuts

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A superb new motion poster for The Wolverine has debuted over at the movie’s international site, showing Hugh Jackman’s mutant getting shirtless and rather damp on a Japanese roof. Although it’s not the most action packed on images, it certainly makes us want to know what he’s going to do with that sword.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.’

The Wolverine opens on July 26th, 2013.
