Does New Star Trek Image Reveals Benedict Cumberbatch’s Character?

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of speculation about who Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing in Star Trek Into Darkness, with many suggesting he’ll be a classic Trek villain. Director JJ Abrams meanwhile seems to have been having a lot of fun not telling us. However now the new image above has arrived, which gives us a name for the character in its caption.

So who is it? Well, the caption simply says, ‘(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions.’

So who is John Harrison? Well, the recently official synopsis describes him as a ‘one man weapon of mass destruction’, but there are still those who believe John Harrison is either a ruse or pseudonym, and that this baddie is actually the legendary Khan. Knowing Abrams, he’s not going to say anything about this until after the film is release, but there is a fair amount of evidence that Khan will be involved, although nothing definitive.

The film hits cinemas May 17th 2013. Here’s the synopsis again in case you missed it, ‘When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.’

Salt 2 Gets Gets Writer Becky Johnston

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The sequel to 2010’s Salt has been moving forward very slowly, but now it’s got a bit more forward momentum as Becky Johnston (The Prince of Tides, Seven Years In Tibet) has been hired to write the screenplay, according to THR.

Johnston takes over from Kurt Wimmer, the writer of the first film, who came onboard to pen the follow-up not long after the first film was released. However, actress Angelina Jolie apparently wasn’t pleased with the direction of that script, which is what’s led to Becky Johnston coming on board. There’s no details on what direction this new screenplay might be taking.

Salt starred Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a CIA spy who is accused of being a Russian double-agent. Original director Phillip Noyce has already said he isn’t interested in makign a sequel, but no replacement has been announced yet.

Glenn Close & Nick Nolte Up For The Musical Always On My Mind

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We don’t see as much of Glenn Close as we should, perhaps because she doesn’t play the sort of wife and mother roles many actresses her age get shoved into, instead hanging on for parts that are a bit more interesting. Now Variety reports that Close and Nick Nolte have signed up to star in the music-driven drama Always On My Mind for writer-director Chris D’Arienzo.

The movie is about an aging rock star (Nick Nolte) who passes away after his battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Glenn Close is set to play his wife, who’s desperately trying to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of his death. It’s not Close’s first brush with musicals, as she found much acclaim playing the lead on stage in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard.

Chris D’Arienzo meanwhile is the man behind the original Broadway version of Rock of Ages, which was nominated for five Tony Awards during its first year on Broadway. The musical was recently adapted for the screen by Adam Shankman. D’Arienzo does have film experience though, most recently writing and directing the comedy Barry Munday, starring Patrick Wilson and Judy Greer.

Martin Sheen To Return For Amazing Spider-Man 2

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We already knew that Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone would be back for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but now we know that at least one more star from the first film will be returning for the sequel, with Martin Sheen once again playing Uncle Ben.

The actor told the RTE’s Irish talk show The Late Late Show last week that, “Well they called me back, I don’t know what the part’s going to be but I’m going to be Uncle Ben once again in Spider-Man next year. We shoot in February.”

You may be wondering exactly how he will return as [small SPOILER ALERT] Uncle Ben died in The Amazing Spider-Man. That means that Sheen will most likely return for a few flashback scenes, quite possibly taking the story of Peter Parker’s parents further, which was toned down in the first movie. [END SPOILERS]

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release May 2nd, 2014 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, Jamie Foxx, Martin Sheen.

Terrence Howard Joins Hugh Jackman & Jake Gyllenhaal In Prisoners

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The cast for Prisoners is getting incredibly good, with Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Melissa Leo, Paul Dano, Viola Davis, and Maria Bello already attached to the film, and they’ve now been joined by Terrence Howard, according to Deadline.

Denis Villeneuve (Incendies) is set to direct, with Hugh Jackman as a distraught father who takes the law into his own hands to find his kidnapped daughter, when he think the authorities aren’t doing enough. He clashes with a big city detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is assigned to the case.

Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband) wrote the screenplay, with filming on the movie set to begin in February. An autumn 2013 release is being eyed.

Ric Roman Waugh To Direct Sci-fi Thriller Tipping Point

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Former stuntman turned director Ric Roman Waugh (Felon, Snitch) has signed up to direct and rewrite the sci-fi thriller Tipping Point for Relativity Media, which is based on the original screenplay from Todd Stein.

Tipping Point is described as ‘a tense, riveting sci-fi thriller that paints an ominous picture of the world 100 years into the future. With the world’s population approaching 10 billion, the penalty for having children without a license is death – no questions, no excuses, and no mercy. Ruthless Population Control Officer Solomon Cage lives only for his job, until the day he discovers two fugitives he’s been pursuing are the love of his life who mysteriously disappeared years ago and the 12-year-old son he never knew he had.’

So essentially it’s like Logan Run’s but a told from the perspective of the people in charge of tracking down the runners. Waugh’s next film, Snitch, the action-thriller starring Dwayne Johnson, Barry Pepper, Melina Kanakaredes, Benjamin Bratt, and Susan Sarandon opens in a few months time. (Source: Variety)

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart Get Hard

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will Ferrell has got a new comedy up his sleeve and for this one he’s teaming up with Kevin Hart, as Deadline reports that they’ve both signed on to star in Get Hard for Warner Bros.

The movie is about a wealthy investment banker (Ferrell) who gets sentenced to a maximum security prison for a crime that he didn’t commit (in movie land, nobody get locked up for something they actually did). He enlists the help of the man who usually washes his car (Kevin Hart), in order to prepare him for doing hard time before he has to report to prison in 30 days.

Ian Roberts and Ian Roberts, who serve as executive producers and showrunners on Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, wrote the screenplay, with Gary Sanchez attached to produce. The project does not have a director attached as of yet.

Skyfall Rises Back To The Top Of The US Box Office

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The couple of weeks after Thanksgiving always tend to be dominated by holdovers at the US box office, but this year it’s been particularly light on new entries, seemingly because everyone is running scared of The Hobbit, which is expected to completely take over cinemas this coming weekend.

This has allowed Skyfall to rise back to the top of the US box office on its fifth weekend, taking $11.4 million over the three days. It’s not a huge amount to make it to the top of the chart, and indeed overall it’s been the third worst weekend at the boox office this year. However it’s good news for Skyfall, as no movie has toped the box office on its fifth weekend since 2010.

The only major new release tanked, with the Gerard Butler soccer themed rom-com Playing For Keeps taking just $6 million on its first three days.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 7th-9th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Skyfall $11.4 $261.6
2 Rise Of The Guardians $10.5 $61.9
3 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $9.2 $268.7
4 Lincoln $9.1 $97.3
5 Life Of Pi $8.3 $60.8
6 Playing For Keeps $6.0 $6.0
7 Wreck-It Ralph $4.9 $164.4
8 Red Dawn $4.2 $37.2
9 Flight $3.1 $86.2

Oblivion Trailer Lands – Tom Cruise takes on a ruined Earth

December 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just this morning we posted the first poster for Oblivion and said we’d heard that the first trailer was due on Sunday. However the promo has slipped out early, or at least a Spanish subtitled version has, which you can see right here.

In the movie the Earth is a ruined shell, with nearly all of the human population now living off the surface. Cruise plays a man who services the drones that ensure humanity can still get the natural resources it craves. However as we discover, some strange things are going on, including Morgan Freeman kidnapping him, some strange beasts and people in pods plummeting to earth. As he tries to figure out what’s happening, he becomes a target himself.

It all looks pretty stylish and the visuals are certainly impressive, with what seems like a well conceived look at a world that’s been trashed so much people can barely survive on the surface any more. Joseph Kosinski’s film hits cinemas next April.
