Harrison Ford & Asa Butterfield Face Off In First Ender’s Game Pic

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

The first image from the young adult adaptation Ender’s Game has arrived, showing Harrison Ford facing off against Asa Butterfield in a rather clinical military environment, with the tension apparently caused by blocked emails from home. The film is based on Orson Scott Card’s popular 1985 novel. It’s due in cinemas next November.

Harrison Ford plays Colonel Hyram Graff, who oversees a military facility where gifted youngsters are trained to prevent an imminent alien attack. Abigail Breslin is playing Valentine Wiggin, the older sister to the titular trainee Ender (Hugo star Asa Butterfield), while Hailee Steinfeld is set to be Ender’s ally, Petra Arkanian. Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Jimmy Pinchak, Suraj Partha, Conor Carroll, and Khylin Rhambo also star.

Director Gavin Hood comments, “The relationship between [Harrison] and Asa was very close, but he didn’t overly befriend him off the set. He helped Asa by allowing that slight sense of intimidation to be there.

“The kids have to attend school for at least three hours of class every day, plus do homework, so you can only shoot with someone like Asa for five hours of your day. There was no time for fooling about or not knowing your lines or being unprepared. Asa being prepared meant that we could focus on the scenes, and these are complicated scenes for a young actor.”

There has been talk of whether there should be a gay boycott of the movie, due to the fact Orson Scott Card is avowedly anti-gay, and has said he believes gay sex should be banned, that same sex marriage is wrong, and has linked child abuse and homosexuality. Whether any sort of organised protest of the film will happen is yet to be seen.

Johnny Depp Goes Back To Don Quixote

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

The problems that saw the Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp collaboration, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, collapse amidst the health problems of actors, financial issues and a storm that destroyed the set, are legendary. It was a passion project for Depp that never happened, but it doesn’t look like he’s given up on doing some sort of adaptation Miguel de Cervantes classic novel.

The Gilliam reinterpretation of the tale is long dead, but now Deadline reports that Disney has picked up an untitled pitch for a new Don Quixote movie and attached Johnny Depp. While the actor is currently attached to act in the movie, it’s believed the film is being written as a starring vehicle for Depp.

Steve Pink and Jeff Morris are attached to write the screenplay, and will start work on the script immediately. The project is described as a modern-day re-imagining of the character, although no specific story details are known.

Halle Berry & James Marsden Wanted For X-Men: Days of Future Past

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If all goes to plan, there are going to be a hell of a lot of superheroes in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. We already knew the First Class mutants would be meeting up with Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart & possibly Hugh Jackman from the earlier X-Men movies, but now THR reports that Halle Berry, James Marsden and others are being sought too.

It isn’t clear if Fox has issued proper offers to the actors, although the THR story suggest others earlier X-Men are being contacted too to see if they can becomes part of the movie, although we don’t know which ones. There is said to be a lot of ‘willingness to participate’ now that director Bryan Singer has returned to the director’s chair.

So don’t be surprised if we hear the likes of Anna Paquin, Rebecca Romijn and Ben Foster are returning in the the next few weeks. Bryan Singer is directing from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg, with Matthew Vaughn still attached as a producer, despite dropping out as the director.

Skyfall Becomes UK’s Highest Grossing Box Office Hit Ever

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just a couple of months ago if you’d asked most people whether they thought the 23rd film in a 50 year old franchise wouldn’t just become the biggest James Bond movie ever, but also the highest grossing movie in UK film history, they would have given an emphatic ‘no’.

However that’s exactly what’s happened, as in just over a month Skyfall has taken £94,277,612 in the UK, overtaking Avatar’s lifetime gross £94,025,632. With the film still doing good business, it could well become the first movie to make £100 million just in Britain and Ireland.

In response to this fantastic news, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli commented, “We’re overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest grossing film of all time. We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, who have contributed to its success.”

It’s an astonishing achievement, and while the film is undoubtedly good, it’s tough to pinpoint exactly why everyone’s gone so 007 crazy. They undoubtedly have though, and it’s great good to have a British born movie on top of the UK all time list.

Upstream Color Trailer – The new movie from Primer’s Shane Carruth

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

2004’s Primer may not have been a big box office hit, but director Shane Carruth got a lot of praise for the film. However it’s taken him until now to get a follow-up in the can, which has just been announced as one of the movies that will be in competition at Sundance. Now a short trailer for the movie has arrived, which doesn’t tell us much about the plot, but has some interesting and strange imagery – mainly it makes us want to now what the piglet has to do with anything.

Here’s the brief synopsis from the Sundance site (which is just as enigmatic as the trailer), ‘A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives. Cast: Amy Seimetz, Shane Carruth, Andrew Sensenig, Thiago Martins.’

No UK release date is currently set.

Jason Clarke & Oscar Isaac Going To Mojave

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been several months since it was revealed that Departed screenwriter William Monahan is planning to turn director with Mojave, based on his own script. Now he’s filled out the cast, with Variety reporting that Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) have signed up for the movie.

When news of Monahan’s film was first announced, there wasn’t much info on the story, but it’s now been revealed that it’s ‘an intense two-hander about a man who escapes into the desert only to encounter a doppelganger-like antagonist and subsequently enter a vortex of criminality and violence.’

To be honest, you wouldn’t think Aussie actor Clarke would be a good doppelganger for Guatamalan born Isaac, but presumably it makes more sense in the script.

The plan is to shoot early next year.

Morten Tyldum Takes On Alan Turing Biopic Imitation Game

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Leo DiCaprio dropped out of the lead role in the Alan Turing biopic Imitation Game, the project has lost a bit of its forward momentum. Alice Creed helmer J. Blakeson came on to direct, but he’s since dropped out too, and now Deadline reports that he’s been replaced by Headhunters helmer Morten Tyldum.

Hopefully Tyldum will be the man to get it made. There’s been a lot of heat behind Graham Moore’s script, which hit the Black List in 2011, but actually getting it in the can has proved tough.

Partially based on Andrew Hodges’ biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma, the script follows British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist Alan Turing, the shy man who is now seen by many as the father of modern computing. His work led to the creation of some of the first computers, which were used to help the Allies decode German communications during WWII. However due to the sensitive nature of his work, his contribution wasn’t officially recognised for many years.

Indeed, rather than being praised by his country, he was persecuted for being gay, which led to depression, the destruction of his career, chemical castration and he eventually killed himself by eating a cyanide-laced apple (although some have said his death may actually have been accidental). In 2009 PM Gordon Brown made an official apology for the way he was treated, although his convictions for being gay still stand.

Joss Whedon Says He’s Completed Avengers 2 Outline

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Joss Whedon is a busy man. He’s overseeing Marvel’s Phase Two movies, directing and co-writing the pilot episode of the planned S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series and he even found time to make Much Ado About Nothing, set for release next year. However what most people care about is The Avengers 2, which is already set for May 1st, 2015.

After the incredible success of The Avengers, Entertainment Weekly has named him one of the Entertainers Of The Year, so Joss sat down with the magazine for a chat, revealing that he already has the story mapped out, and has recently turned in an outline to Marvel Studios. Of course, no story details have been revealed yet.

The main Avengers cast are expected to return, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson. It isn’t known when it might shoot, although many expect cameras to roll before 2013 is out.

Pacific Rim Sequel Already In The Works, With Travis Beacham Writing

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Legendary Pictures obviously has high hopes for Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, their big bet for a major box office hit next summer, as they’ve already hired screenwriter Travis Beacham to pen Pacific Rim 2. That should ensure that if the first film does hit big, they’ll be able to churn out a follow-up pretty quickly.

Beacham wrote the original screenplay for Pacific Rim, which follow a defense force consisting of pilots who operate giant robots known as Jaegers. They are pitted against giant Kaiju monsters that spill from some sort of portal in the Pacific and are intent on destroying the entire planet.

Guillermo del Toro is set to collaborate with Travis Beacham on the sequel screenplay, but at the moment it isn’t know if he will return to direct, or if he will hand the reins over to someone else. The director is currently commited to helming Crimson Peak for Universal Pictures, which begins shooting in January of 2014. (Source: THR)

Matt Damon In Talks For George Clooney’s Monuments Men

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matt Damon and George Clooney like to work together, so it’s not a giant shock to discover that Matt is now in talks to join the cast of Clooney’s upcoming directorial effort, The Monuments Men, according to Deadline.

If he does sign up, he’d be part of an already impressive ensemble that includes Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville, and Bob Balaban have joined the cast. The movie will be based on the nonfiction book, The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel, which tells the story of the US government’s efforts to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis and the art experts whose skills were put to use in the campaign. The title comes from the name given to the American and British art historians and museum curators who helped the military track down the stolen pieces.

George Clooney will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with his producing partner Grant Heslov. George Clooney is also starring in an unspecified role. Filming should begin this January in Europe.
