Benedict Cumberbatch To Play Gay Beatles Manager Brian Epstein

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While some have suggested Benedict Cumberbatch is playing gay in Sherlock, he’s now going to do it properly, playing Beatles manager Brian Epstein in a new biopic of the man who guided the Fab Four to fame.

The Tom Hanks produced movie will focus on the manager’s entire life, rather than just being a story about The Beatles from his perspective. Brian Epstein signed the iconic band back in 1961. He initially had difficulty getting a label to take them, before he launched them to international superstar status. While he’s best remembered for his relationship to the Liverpudlians, he also managed the likes of Cilla Black and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

Epstein was also a closeted homosexual, whose sexuality was completely concealed from the public, although it was an open secret amongst his friends and associates. It’s little surprise it was kept secret, as homosexuality was still illegal in the UK at the time. He’s also said to have had an ‘almost’ love affair with John Lennon, which was never consummated (at least that’s how Lennon put it). Epstein battled addictions with drugs and gambling, and tragically died of an accidental overdose of sleeping pills in 1967, just one month before homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales.

Todd Graff wrote the screenplay for the film. The openly gay Graff is a former actor (perhaps best known for The Abyss), who’s more recently written and directed music-fuelled movies such as Camp, Bandslam and Joyful Noise. However he won’t helm this one, as Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Push) has that job. The director already has a good relationship with Cumberbatch as he helmed four out of the six episodes of Sherlock that have been released so far.

It isn’t clear when this film might shoot. (Source: THR)

Gareth Evans, Eduardo Sanchez & More Up For V/H/S/2

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although V/H/S got a mixed reception when it was released earlier this year, the idea of a horror anthology tied together with a bigger story obviously excited a lot of directors, as THR reports that the likes of Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption) and Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project) are two of seven directors who are making V/H/S/2.

Also involved with the movie are Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun), Timo Tjahjanto (The ABCs of Death), Gregg Hale, Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way to Die), and screenwriter Simon Barrett, who makes his directorial debut. Gareth Evans will co-direct his segment with Timo Tjahjanto, while Eduardo Sánchez will team up with his producing partner Gregg Hale on their segment.

The original V/H/S follows a group of students tasked with finding a VHS tape inside a house, only to discover hundreds of tapes inside. The sequel follows a similar conceit, with a pair of investigators who find a tape while searching for a missing student. Adam Wingard will direct the overall story, with the other filmmakers directing the individual segments found on the tapes.

Production is already underway in Los Angeles, Maryland, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and Indonesia. It will be released next year.

Will Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher Be Back For Star Wars VII?

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Unless you’ve been in a coma for the last couple of days, you’ll have heard Disney has bought Lucasfilm and that plans for Star Wars Episodes VII-IX are in the works, with the first of those films arriving in 2015. There’s been massive amounts of speculation, most of which is based on very little info, so EW decided to go to Mark Hamill and find out what he knows. His answers suggest there may be a role for him in this new trilogy, although that’s far from confirmed yet.

Hamill says he and Carrie Fisher first got a heads-up about the new films a few months ago, “Yeah, last August, he asked Carrie and I to have lunch with him and we did. I thought he was going to talk about either his retirement or the Star Wars TV series that I’ve heard about-which I don’t think we were going to be involved in anyway, because that takes place between the prequels and the ones we were in and, if Luke were in them, he’d be anywhere from a toddler to a teenager so they’d get an age-appropriate actor-or the 3-D releases. So when he said, “We decided we’re going to do Star Wars: Episode VII, Star Wars: Episode VIII, and Star Wars: Episode IX,” I was just gobsmacked. “What? Are you nuts?!” [laughs]

“I can see both sides of it. Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be-and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. It’s one of those things: people either just don’t care for it or are passionate about it. I guess that defines what cult movies are all about. We’ll see. I’m anxious to know what’s going on, but the main story [yesterday] was the sale to Disney. I have mixed feelings about that, but they haven’t done badly by Marvel and the Muppets and Pixar. It’s one of those big decisions that at first seems unusual but then the more you look at it, the more it makes sense.”

That’s far from saying saying he will be back as Luke, but that fact Lucas took him and Fisher to one side has ignited speculation that the only reason to tell them was because he wanted them back (although it could have just been good business, to ensure they weren’t completely blindsided.

Hamill doesn’t know anything about the plot though, simply saying, “He was just talking about writers and the fact that he wouldn’t be directing. I guess he wanted us to know before everybody else knew. He said, “Now you can’t tell anybody!” [laughs] Even now I’m nervous about saying anything. I just don’t know!”

There have also been suggestions from Lucas biographer Dale Pollock that the story picks up when Luke Skywalker is a 40-year-old man. That’s based on story treatments for the films he read several years ago when working with Lucas. If true, Hamill may be too old to play the role at 61, but it’s always possible Lucas has tinkered with the treatments. At the moment it’s all speculation at best, but don’t be shocked if it turns out Hamill and Fisher end up returning in some capacity.

It’s also been confirmed that while The Thrawn Trilogy of novels is normally seen as the official account of what Luke, Leia and co. got up to after Episode VI, these new films are original tales (and as whatever Lucas says immediately becomes canon, his treatment supplant anything else).

Vince Vaughn Takes On Action-Thriller Triple Time

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although Vince Vaughn is best known for comedy roles, he’s sometimes proved he can be a very good dramatic actor. He’s now getting into a bit of action drama, as Variety reports he’s signed on to star in the action-thriller Triple Time.

Peter Billingsley is set to direct the film, which will see Vaughn as a US Marshal who is escorting a prisoner accused of environmental terrorism. What’s supposed to be an easy assignment gets increasingly complicated, with the Marshal having to work with the convict to unravel a vast conspiracy after their transport plane explodes, even though one of them may be involved. So it’s a little bit The Fugitive and a little bit Con Air.

Billingsley will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Michael J. Wilson. The movie is currently looking for buyers at the American Film Market.

John Cusack Up For Stephen King’s Cell

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With a renewed interest in Stephen King adaptations, it was only a matter of time before the idea of making a movie out of Cell was resurrected, as it’s definitely one of the more cinematic of King’s more recent novels. Now it seems the movie is back on track with John Cusack attached to star, according to ScreenDaily. The film is being shopped to buyers at the American Film Market.

King’s novel follows the chaos that erupts after all cell phones begin emitting a strange pulse, which turns people into psychopathic killers. John Cusack will play a father trying to find his wife and son during this tragic event. Stephen King co-wrote the screenplay himself, alongside Adam Alleca (The Last House on the Left).

The project was initially set up at Dimension Films back in 2006, when Eli Roth was attached to direct. That fell through and the last we heard, there was talk that the book would be adapted into a four-part mini-series. That never got off the ground and so now we’re back to film and Cusack starring.

The producers are currently looking for a director.

Imogen Poots Up For Female Lead In Need for Speed

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

DreamWorks really wants some strong franchises and it’s hoping that it can get that with the videogame adaptation Need For Speed, which it hopes will be its Fast & Furious. A few weeks ago it was revealed that Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul has been chosen to portray the male lead, and now THR reports that Fright Night star Imogen Poots is in talks to portray the female lead.

John Gatins (Real Steel) and George Gatins developed the original story, with Gatins handling the actual script. No concrete story details have been released, although the video game adaptation is said to be a throwback to car-centred movies of the 1970s. The plot will not be based on any specific game from the Electronic Arts franchise. We don’t know any specific details about either Paul or Poots’ characters either, unfortunately.

Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) is directing, although it isn’t known when shooting will begin. It won’t be too long though, as a US release date of February 7th, 2014 has already been set.

Christoph Waltz In Talks For The Muppets 2

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz is looking for something a bit lighter to his usual fare, as he has entered negotiations to star in The Muppets 2 for Disney and director James Bobin, according to THR.

The actor will apparently play an Interpol agent in the sequel, which will be see Kermit and his cohorts heading to Europe. Waltz’s role is apparently one of the few key human parts, aside from a slew of cameos. Other non-Muppet roles include a Russian femme fatale and the male lead, whose intentions are always questionable. The Muppets star Jason Segel will not be returning for the follow-up. However other than that, there’s not too much info on the plot. That said, it’s previously been said the movie is a homage to 1981’s The Great Muppet Caper.

James Bobin will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Nick Stoller.

Josh Duhamel Says You’re Not You Alongside Hilary Swank

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hilary Swank and Emmy Rossum are already set for the life-affirming drama You’re Not You, and now they’ve been joined by Transformers star Josh Duhamel, according to THR.

Rossum will portray a selfish college student who gets a new purpose in life when she takes a job caring for a woman (Hilary Swank) afflicted with ALS, aka Motor Neurone Disease. What hasn’t been revealed though is how Duhamel will factor into this, although what’s the betting he’s some sort of love interest for one of the women?

George C. Wolfe (Nights in Rodanthe) is directing from a screenplay by Shana Feste and Jordan Roberts, based on Michelle Wildgen’s debut novel. Although the cast is coming together, it isn’t clear when the film might shoot.

Gerard Butler Set To Be A Dynamo In A WWII Soccer Movie

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gerard Butler sure seems to like his football, as he’s got the soccer mom rom-com Playing The Field arriving early next year, and now Deadline reports that he’s signed up for the World War II footie drama Dynamo.

Based on Dynamo: Defending The Honour Of Kiev by Andy Dougan, the film will tell the true story of a landmark soccer game that took place between an occupied Ukrainian soccer team and their Nazi captors during World War II.

To stem a rising tide of resistance against the Nazi occupation and establish German superiority, the Nazis set up a match pitting the starving Ukrainians against a ‘super team’ of German players. Butler will play Nikolai Trusevich, the all-star goalie who served as a cornerstone and leader for his team, and ultimately inspired the entire battered city of Kiev. The game came to be known as ‘The Death Match’.

No director is attached as yet, but the plan is to shoot someitme next year.

Olivia Wilde & Hailee Steinfeld Join The Keeping Room

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Neither Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy, house), or Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), have quite lived up to their promise yet, but now they’re teaming up for a new movie called The Keeping Room, which is set to be directed by Daniel Barber. Nicole Beharie (Shame, 42) is also set to star, according to THR.

The film, written by Julia Hart, tells the story of three Southern women – two sisters and one African American slave – who are left without men in the dying days of the Civil War. They are forced to defend their home from the onslaught of a band of soldiers who have broken off from the fast approaching Union Army.

Daniel Barber commented, “I am thrilled to be working with these three fantastic actors, and very excited to be directing this great script.”

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in March in North Carolina.
