Emily Browning Up For Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush

May 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sucker Punch should have been a star-making turn for Emily Browning, but the film’s failure meant her performance got pretty much ignored. However she’s still around and will be seen this summer in Magic Mike. Now she’s in talks for a new role according to Variety, Plush, from director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Red Riding Hood).

Hardwicke and co-writer Artie Nelson have come up with the script about a psychologist who has an extra edge on helping his patients through their troubles. As well as being a therapist, he’s also a psychic and can dive into his clients’ minds and witness their memories, all the better to aid them in overcoming their personal demons. However, when he meets a traumatised teenager (Browning) who shares his gift, he seems to have met his match.

It’s a potentially interesting plot and something Browning should do well, who seems to specialise in innocents with a hard edge.

Michael Haneke’s Amour Wins The Cannes Palm d’Or

May 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cannes really loves Michael Haneke. In 2009 they awarded his movie White Ribbon the Palm d’Or and now they’ve given his follow-up, Amour, exactly the same prize, one of the most prestigious gongs on the festival calendar.

Amour is the story of an octogenarian couple and how they deal with the end of love and life as the wife deteriorates physically and mentally. The film has been a critics’ favourite ever since it screened on the festival’s first Sunday and was tipped for the Palm d’Or ever since. While the festival often throws up surprises (it’s very dependent on who’s on the small jury), this year they gave the favourite the main prize.

Amour wasn’t the only winner though, with a surprised Mads Mikkelsen getting Best Actor for his role in Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt, while Best Actress went to Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur for Cristian Mungiu’s Beyond the Hills. Ken Loach meanwhile picked up the Jury Prize for his film The Angels’ Share, with the director saying as he picked up his gong, “Cannes shows us that cinema is not just a diversion, it shows us who we are and how we live together.”

Here’s the full list of winners.

Malin Akerman Set To Play Debbie Harry In CBGB

May 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week Alan Rickman signed up to play CBGB founder Hilly Kristal, shortly followed by Rupert Grint as one of the musicians who helped make the New York club famous, Now director Randall Miller has added a new list of actors to the film, including Malin Akerman, Stana Katic, Joel David Moore, Julian Acosta, Richard De Klerk, Josh Zuckerman, John Holstrom, Ryan Hurst and Estelle Harris.

The film is a biopic of Kristal, who in the late 1970s sought to create a venue for county, bluegrass and blues music (the CBGB of the name) in New York. However, after acts playing that music were tough to find, Kristal allowed local performers to play. That decision was precipitous, as the club soon became ground zero for rock & roll as well as punk, launching the careers of performers such as The Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith.

Variety reports that Akerman is set to play the iconic lead singer of Blondie, Debbie Harry. Julian Acosta will be Johnny Ramone, with Joel David Moore as his brother, Joey. THR adds that Stana Katic is set to play producer Genya Raven, who was also the lead singer of Goldie & The Gingerbreads. De Klerk will be CBGB soundman Taxi, Hurst is Mad Mountain and Harris will be Kristal’s mother, Bertha.

Shooting starts next month.

New Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Character Posters

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In November the Twilight Saga comes to an end with Breaking Dawn Part 2. To ensure the twi-hards fervour doesn’t dim, three new character posters have been released, showing close-ups of Edward, Bella and Jacob, which you can see above and below.

The last film ended with Bella getting vampiric and a new half-bloodsucker baby being born. This causes all manner of problem in Breaking Dawn Part 2, with the wolfpack angry but Jacob imprinted on the child, the Volturi wanting to assert their power and Bella getting used to her lust for blood. You’ll be able to find out how it all pans out on November 16th.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Red Band Trailer

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s still a toss up whether it’ll be great or a complete mess, but Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is intensely intriguing and the trailers certainly look cool. That’s true of this new red-band effort, which brings the violence to the fore. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter reimagines the American president as an axe-wielding, highly trained vampire hunter. Seth Grahame-Smith’s book, on which the movie will be based, gives new context to Lincoln’s rise to the presidency as well as the American Civil War (which was fought because the vampires were in league with the slave owners), suggesting these events were a lot more paranormal than history tells us, and stemmed from Lincoln’s mother’s murder by a vampire when he was a child. The film hits UK cinemas August 2nd.

The Apparition Trailer – Ashley Greene & Sebastian Stan get haunted

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s horror time again with the trailer for The Apparition. When frightening events start to occur in their home, young couple Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural (Tom Felton), but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force…

Okay, but how can Tom ‘Draco Mafoy’ Felton be an expert in the supernatural? He’s only about 12! it’s due out in August.

Owen Wilson & More Go Squirrels To The Nuts

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although Squirrel To The Nuts is a pretty rubbish title for a film, as it’s going to be produced by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, and directed by peter Bogdanovich, you’ve got to hope there’ll be something worthwhile about this upcoming comedy. And with them involved it’s almost guaranteed to be quirky.

It’s also pulling together a pretty good cast, as Variety reports that Owen Wilson, Brie Larson and Olivia Wilde are all onboard, with Jason Schwartzman sniffing around a role too. Bogdanovich’s script is about a prostitute turned Broadway actor (Larson) who sees her two worlds collide. Wilson will be a big-name Broadway director who like to hire Larson both professionally and personally, despite the fact that he’s married to the star of his latest play. Wilde, meanwhile, will a therapist whose own mother is in rehab. There’s no news on who Schwartzman might play.

Bogdanovich is currently trying to get the money together for the film, with an autumn shoot planned.

Anthony Hopkins Sought For Red 2 Villain Role

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Red proved that people like to watch slightly older people kick ass, and as a result we’re getting Red 2, which already has Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich, and now has another veteran of the screen in its sights, as Deadline reports that Anthony Hopkins is in talks to play a villain in the movie.

If everything works out he’d play a scheming baddie called Edward Bailey in the action comedy. There is a potential problem though, as with Red 2 due to shoot later this summer, it could clash with his duties as Odin in Thor 2. That would of course take priority, but if they can work out timings he’ll be in Red 2 as well.

As well as the old guys, Mary Louise Parker is also returning, along with newcomers Catherine Zeta-Jones and Byung-hun Lee. Dead Parisot is set to direct.

Bradley Cooper Developing American Sniper

May 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bradley Cooper sure likes attaching himself to movies, and now he’s got one more, as THR reports that Cooper is set to produce and probably star in American Sniper, based on the autobiography of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

Jason Dean Hall will write the script about Kyle, who holds the records for most sniper kills by an American. The book has been praised for its frankness in telling a first-person account of a warrior who shoots from far and close distances. It also includes portions written by Kyle’s wife, balancing out the story to show both the home perspective as well as that of a soldier who’s out to kill.

Navy SEALs have sure been popular in Hollywood since the killing of Osama Bin Laden, and this is just one of many projects in the works about the special operatives. We’ll have to wait and see if this one actually goes ahead, but having Cooper on board probably helps.
