Coens Cast Oscar Isaac In Their Folk Film

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Coens Brothers like to mix it up, and while they’re never exactly mainstream, some of their films are more accessible than others. Following their biggest commercial success ever, True Grit, they’re now planning on something that’s going to be a more difficult sell to the masses, and according to Variety, they’ve enlisted Drive and Sucker Punch star Oscar Isaac for the lead role.

The movie, Inside Llewyn Davis, is based on the life of musician Dave van Ronk, part of the folk music scene that hit Greenwich Village in the 1960’s. The script is said to be based in part on van Ronk’s memoir, The Mayor of MacDougal Street. However this being the Coens, it’s tough to say who Isaac will be playing, as he could be van Ronk, or Llewyn Davis, except that beyond that name being in the title, we have no clue who Llewyn Davis might be.

Isaac’s career should get a big boost next year as he has a major role in The Bourne Legacy. He’ll start shooting Inside Llewlyn Davis early next year in New York.

Rade Serbedzija Joins Taken 2

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Yesterday Fox announced an October 2012 release for Taken 2, which means they need to get a move on and put it into production if they want it in cinemas in time. They’re now closer to that as Rade Serbedzija (Batman Begins, Snatch, X-Men: First Class) has joined Liam Neeson in the kidnapping thriller, according to THR.

The Croation born actor will play Murad, the father of a kidnapper who was killed by Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) in the first film. Murad is described as a vengeful man who gives orders and doesn’t take them. Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers.

However things are the opposite way round this time, with Murad taking Bryan and his wife (Famke Janssen) hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul. As a result, it’s Kim’s (Maggie Grace) turn to help her parents escape.

Taken 2 comes to theaters October 5th, 2012 and stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace. The film is directed by Olivier Megaton.

Dan Trachtenberg Plans Crime Of The Century

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Earlier this year Dan Trachtenberg got a whole lot of praise  – and over 6.8 million Youtube views – for his live-action short film, Portal: No Escape, based on the hit videogame. It’s been enough to get Hollywood sniffing around, and now Universal has teamed him up with producer Chris Morgan and set him to direct the sci-fi heist movie Crime of the Century.

The film is based an original idea from Trachtenberg and Daniel Kunka (who will write the script), which revolves around a high-octane heist with a science fiction twist. Unfortunately though, while Deadline reports on the deal, they don’t have any more plot details than that.

The science fiction heist film will be produced by Chris Morgan, who has recently become a heavy hitter with his screenplays for Wanted and Fast Five, and currently has a major first-look deal at Universal.

Young Actors Sought For Die Hard 5

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Yesterday, we brought you news that 20th Century Fox has set a Valentine’s Day 2013 release date for the fifth Die Hard flick, A Good Day to Die Hard. We also got a bit more info about the plot, which involves Bruce Willis’ John McClane heading to Russia to help his son.

Now Variety reports that Fox is already eyeing up actors as potential people to fill the role of McLane Jr, with Aaron Paul, Ben Foster, Paul Dano, and Milo Ventimiglia all set to test for the role next week. Fox has also reportedly shown interest in Paul Walker, although he is not expected to test for the role. However this isn’t just about finding someone to fill a supporting role like Justin Long did in Die Hard 4.0, as it’s being suggest that this character may end up carrying the franchise in future sequels.

As we said yesterday, A Good Day To Die Hard follows John McLane Moscow, where he tries sweet talk some cops into letting his apparently-wayward son out of jail. However, when he gets there, the events surrounding his son’s arrest aren’t what they appear and world-threatening terrorist hijinks ensue.

John Moore is directing A Good Day to Die Hard from a screenplay by Skip Woods with shooting expected to start early next year.

Downey Jr. May Be An Accidental Genius

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Since he and his wife set up their production company, Team Downey, ealrier this year, Robert Downey Jr. has been snapping up a slew of potential projects. Now Warner Bros. has acquired Adam Gigbot’s pitch The Accidental Genius for Robert Downey Jr. (and his company) to produce and star in.

Deadline reports that the story follows an average man who slips into a coma and awakens with genius-level intelligence. He keeps having visions of a unique symbol, which only a former prodigy recognises. The two men pair up to try and solve this mystery, which could change the fate of the world. The title refers to an extremely rare medical condition where trauma victims awaken with heightened intelligence.

It’s an intriguing premise, although a story about someone suddenly becoming more intelligent isn’t exactly original. We’ll have to wait and see whether this has something a bit more to offer.

Gerard Buter Is A Hunter Killer

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

When Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) signs up to direct a movie, it’s very different to saying he will actually end up helming it, as he does have a tendency to jump from project to project. However, he’s now started casting Huter Killer, so it looks like he might actually make the action-thriller. Variety reports that Gerard Butler is in talks to star in the movie, with Sam Worthington being sought for another role.

The project is based on George Wallace and Don Keith’s upcoming novel, which follows an inexperienced US submarine captain who teams up with a Navy SEAL unit on a mission to rescue an overthrown Russian president. They must also stop a rogue Russian general from igniting World War III. Yep, it’s a plot from a movie of the early 90s, but we’re getting it in the 2010s instead!

Gerard Butler is in discussions to play the submarine captain, Joe Glass, while Sam Worthington is being considered to play Bill Beaman, the Navy SEAL team leader (although it’s not known if Worthington is interested).

Antoine Fuqua is directing Hunter Killer from a screenplay by Jamie Moss, Arne Schmidt, and John Kolvenbach, with shooting scheduled to start this winter.

Anne Heche Joins Arthur Newman, Golf Pro

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Anne Heche may still have a reputation for being slightly insane, but she seems to have calmed down a lot since the post-Ellen Degeneres split-up period. Indeed with roles in the likes of Cedar Rapids, Rampart, That’s What She Said and TV’s Hung, she’s been in the spotlight more than she has at any time since the late 90s.

Now she’s got another role, as Variety reports she’s set to join Colin Firth and Emily Blunt in the dark comedy, Arthur Newman, Golf Pro. Firth stars as a man who hates his job and is despised by his family. Feeling he missed his shot at living the dream, he decides to fake his own death and create a new identity. He meets a young woman (Emily Blunt) with her own troubled past, and the duo start breaking into empty homes to pose as the absent owners. Heche will play Colin Firth’s girlfriend, who treats him terribly.

Arthur Newman, Golf Pro will begin production this month in North Carolina, with commercials helmer Dante Ariola directing from a script by Becky Johnston.

Michael Winterbottom May Take On The Beatles

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Everything from 24 Hour Party People to 9 Songs has shown us that director Michael Winterbottom likes his music, and now it appears he’s thinking about going to the inevitable place helmers who like music go – The Beatles.

The Playlist says that he and regular producing partner Andrew Eaton are involved with turning The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider’s Diary Of The Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire And Its Wild Rise And Fall into a film. It’s been known for a long time that none other than the gobby Liam Gallagher has wanted to get the book on the screen. For a while he’s had help from Winterbottom in a producting capacity, and now Michael’s decided he definitely wants to direct too.

Richard DiLello’s book looks at the difficult formation of Apple Records (which many people don’t realise didn’t just release Beatles records) as well as problems it caused for The Beatles, the acrimonious recording of Let It Be and their split. It’s not exactly a jolly tale, but Winterbottom should be able to handle it. And while Liam Gallagher previously suggested Johnny Depp might be in the film as Beatles publicisty Derek Taylor with it seems that’s now unlikely to happen.

It’s not certain when the film might go into production, as Winterbottom will make Bialout next, and after there there are numerous project percolating. We’ll have to wait and see.

Gam Gigandet Gets A Free Ride

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

I can never decide if Cam Gigandet is a very handsome man or just a bit weird looking, which may be one of the reasons his career seems to be destined to be in supporting roles. He’s popped up in the likes Never Back Down, Twilight, Easy A and Priest, but each time in an ‘always the bridesmaid’ type role.

He’s continuing that with Free Ride, as Variety says he’s just signed on for the indie drama, which will see him play Anna Paquin’s romantic interest in the story of a young mother who escapes her abusive life and heads to Florida to start over. The film is based on a true story, with Paquin’s character exploring her new life amid the vibrant culture of the Sunshine State in the 70s, including the possibilities of dating Gigandet.

Whan Sosin will write and direct, with shooting set to begin on October 24th

Die Hard Will Be Your Valentine

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

20th Century Fox has been busy setting release, which has also allowed us to know  exactly what the fifth Die Hard movie will be called. Indeed it’s let us know the film is a ot closer than many had thought it was.

According to Fox, it’ll be called A Good Day to Die Hard, and although you wouldn’t really think of the Die Hard franchise the ultimate in romance, it will hit theaters on Valentine’s Day 2013. But then, as Feb 14th is normally when guys take girls to see soppy films only the woman really wants to see, why should they release a film where it’s the other way around.

Shooting will begin on the movie January 2012, with John Moore in the director’s chair. The film will take the franchise international, as it set in Russia and starts out with John McClane heading to Moscow to sweet talk some cops into letting his apparently-wayward son out of jail. However, when he gets there, the events surrounding his son’s arrest aren’t what they appear and world-threatening terrorist hijinks ensue.

The studio has also set Taken 2 for a October 5, 2012 release, while Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters will hit on Wednesday March 27, 2013. Parental Guidance, formerly known as Us & Them, will arrive on November 21, 2012, while Of Men and Mavericks, previously known as Mavericks will be released on October 26, 2012, and Walking with Dinosaurs 3D has been moved from a December 20, 2013 release date to October 11, 2013.

So is A Good Day To Die Hard a good title? Let us know.
