New Chappie Trailer – Take a fresh look at Neill Blomkamp’s robot tale

January 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chappie-posterThe first trailer for Chappie looked like it would be a bit of a charmer, with a little bit of an ET/Short Circuit vibe going on. However this new promo adds in a little bit of a harder edge, with a few echoes of Robocop (barring the violence) and more edge.

Still looks like it could be good though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.’ Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley star.’

The film’s due out March 6th. [Read more…]

Melissa McCarthy Circling Ghostbusters Lead

January 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

melissa-mccarthyThe extremely long-gestating Ghostbusters 3 is still ever so slowly creeping closer to the screen, and it appears its now ready to seriously think about casting, as THR reports that Melissa McCarthy is in major contention for the female lead.

That’s not too surprising as director Paul Feig has a long-standing relationship with the actress thanks to the likes of Bridesmaids and The Heat, along with the upcoming Spy. However it’s far from a done deal, as McCarthy has several months more work to complete on the latest season of Mike & Molly, and also plans to shoot her hubby’s movie, Michelle Darnell, this summer.

Sony apparently want to shoot the Ghostbusters movie in June, which is likely to clash with Darnell, but it appears they’re going to try to work something out.

It also seems Emma Stone is a contender for being one of the female-led Ghostbusters team, with Jillian Bell (Workaholics), and Cecily Strong (SNL) also likely to meet Feig.

Expect to hear more soon.

The Voices Trailer – Ryan Reynolds can talks to animals but in a rather mad way

January 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

voices-ryan-reynolds-slideThe Voices debuted this time last year at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s taken a while to get it to audiences, partly because while the premise of Ryan Reynolds talking to animals sounds like it’ll be a family-friendly romp, the movie itself is a lot more weird and unusual than that.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) is that chipper guy clocking the nine-to-five at a bathtub factory, with the offbeat charm of anyone who could use a few friends. With the help of his court-appointed psychiatrist, he pursues his office crush (Gemma Arterton). However, the relationship takes a sudden, murderous turn after she stands him up for a date. Guided by his evil talking cat and benevolent talking dog, Jerry must decide whether to keep striving for normalcy, or indulge in a much more sinister path.’

That sinister path may include killing women.

Anna Kendrick and Jacki Weaver co-star in the film with Marjane Satrapi directing. The film arrives on VOD and in cienmas on February 6th in the US, while it should arrive in the UK on March 20th. [Read more…]

Fifty Shades of Grey Gets An ‘R’ Rating For Its ‘Unusual Behavior’

January 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifty-shades-trailer2-jamie-dornan-shirtlessMany have been wondering how the film version of Fifty Shades Of Grey would escape a dreadful – and commercially suicidal – NC-17 rating in the US. After all, if it fully showed what the novels are most famous for, it would be hardcore in the extreme.

However ever since Universal bought the film rights it’s been clear they’ve been aiming for an ‘R’ rating. Indeed, Jamie Dornan’s recent statement that his contract even included a clause that his penis wouldn’t be shown suggested it might be even tamer than some had expected (or at least hoped for).

Now it’s been through the MPAA rating system and has come out the other side with it ‘R’ certificate, along with the official warning that it got that classification for, ‘Strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language.’

The ‘unusual behavior’ is presumably some of the film’s BDSM powerplay situations, as the MPAA is famed for issuing warning that are so scared of actually saying what the problem is that they become too vague for anyone to understand (the most famous of these being films that are given a rating due to mysterious ‘thematic elements’).

Before Fifty Shades went into production, there had been talk of the studio making an ‘R’ rated version and then later releasing a much stronger ‘NC-17′ edition, but those plans were abandoned fairly quickly. Indeed that fact the movie seemingly sailed through the MPAA system without too many issues, further suggests that this may not be as near-the-knuckle as the books would suggest it would have to be.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘FIFTY SHADES OF GREY is the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the bestselling book that has become a global phenomenon. Since its release, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has been translated in 52 languages worldwide and sold more than 90 million copies in e-book and print—making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever.

‘Stepping into the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, who have become iconic to millions of readers, are Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. Joining them in the cast are Luke Grimes as Christian’s brother, Elliot; Victor Rasuk as Anastasia’s close friend, José; and Jennifer Ehle as Anastasia’s mother, Carla. FIFTY SHADES OF GREY is being directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti alongside E. L. James, the creator of the series. The screenplay is by Kelly Marcel, with revisions by Patrick Marber and Mark Bomback.’

It’ll be in cinemas on Valentine’s 2015.

Paul Rudd Joins The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

January 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paul-ruddPaul Rudd may be going superhero this summer with Ant-Man, but he’s planning a rather different follow-up, as he’s signed on for the drama The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, according to Variety.

The movie will be based on Jonathan Evison’s 2012 bestselling novel, which ‘follows the touching friendship between Ben Benjamin (Rudd) and a young adult stricken with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The two form a unique bond and gently push each other toward re-engaging in life in an affecting, funny and inspirational tale of broken people coming to terms with difficult lives.’

Rob Burnett, who best known for producing The Late Show With David Letterman will direct from his own script. It’s not 100% clear with Revised Fundamentals will shoot.

Wes Bentley Is On For Disney’s Pete’s Dragon Remake

January 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wes-bentleyDisney’s planned remake of Pete’s Dragon is now fast coming together. The likes of Oakes Fegley, Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard and Oona Laurence are already onboard, and now TheWrap reports that Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Hunger Games) has signed on too.

The original 1977 movie was a mix of live-action and animation, about a boy who escapes his horrible adoptive parents and befriends a dragon called Elliott. This time around the dragon with be CGI, and the story will also be rather different (it also won’t be a musical). Here Pete was raised in a forest by the dragon after his parents died in a car accident. He has to take on a group of loggers who are cutting down all of the trees.

Robert Redford is set play a local who tells tall tales involving dragons that no one believes, the equivalent of Mickey Rooney’s Lampie from the original.

It’s not known exactly who Bentley will be, although it is known that the filmmakers have been on the lookout for a mill owner and his greedy brother, so Wes may have scored one of those roles.

David Lowery is directing from a script he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. It’s believed the movie will start shooting in the next couple of months.

Michael Keaton May Head With Tom Hiddleston To Kong: Skull Island

January 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-keatonFollowing his potentially Oscar-winning role in Birdman, Hollywood seems to have suddenly remembered the talent that is Michael Keaton. He’s suddenly become far more in demand than he has been for many years, and that includes the makers of Kong: Skull Island, who are finalising a deal for Keaton to star, according to THR.

Assuming that deal comes together, he will star alongside Tom Hiddleston and J.K. Simmons in the film, which is a prequel to King Kong. Not too much is known about the plot specifics, but the movie will be entirely set on Skull Island, the mysterious place full of dinosaurs and monsters, along with giant apes. The speculation is that it will be about how Kong became the last of the giant gorillas, while also giving an explanation for how outsiders knew about the island and so set sail to later find and capture Kong.

It isn’t known who Keaton will play, although it’s believed the three actors currently cast will be the core of a group who set out to explore the island..

Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer), will direct from a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. A March 10th, 2017 release date is already pencilled in.

Reese Witherspoon Will Be Downsizing Alongside Matt Damon

January 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

reese-witherspoon-wild-slideReese Witherspoon has been slightly in the filmic wilderness for the past few years, but coming off her well received performance in Wild she’s circling for a new film from a director beloved by the Academy, as she’s in talking Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, according to Deadline.

It’s her second time round on the project, as she was previously attached way back in 2009, before Payne but the project on the backburner.

The slightly odd sounding film is about a man (Matt Damon) who decides that his life would be much better if he shrunk himself. It’s previously been described as being a social satire.

It’s not 100% clear who Witherspoon will play, although she was previously set to play a woman who met the shrinking man (who at that point was set to be played by Paul Giamatti).

The main sticking point with Witherspoon’s involvement is scheduling, as it’s believed Damon will shoot the new Jason Bourne movie before Downsizing, and so it’s difficult to pin down exactly when it will go in front of the camera at the moment.

HBO Comes Onboard For Matt Bomer’s Biopic Of Gay Star Montgomery Clift

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

montgomery-clift-matt-bomerFor quite a long time now Matt Bomer has been involved in developing a biopic of gay/bisexual actor Montgomery Clift (we first reported on it back in September 2013), however it’s always been clear that while there many thought it was a good idea – not least because of the resemblance between Bomer & Clift – getting the funding has been tough.

However now HBO, which has had huge success with gay-themed original movies such as Behind The Candelabra and The Normal Heart, has stepped in to help develop the project, according to THR.

Christopher Lovick wrote the initial script, but Love is Strange scribes Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias have recently been asked to come in and work on the screenplay. It’s currently going by the simple title, Monty Clift.

In the late 40s and early 50s, Clift was on the path to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. After The Heiress, Red River, A Place In The Sun, I Confess and From Here To Eternity, he was a true heart-throb with three Oscar nominations to his name. In many people’s opinion he was a talent on a par with James Dean and Marlon Brando – and all that by the age of 24.

However, Clift was also gay (or at least bisexual) at a time when homosexuality was illegal. He never really came to terms with his sexuality. He suffered from severe self-loathing throughout his adult life (as did many gay people back them) and became a severe alcoholic. In 1956, during the filming of Raintree County, he crashed his car while drunk which caused various injuries, including facial lacerations that meant he was never quite as good looking again. While he continued to work, with a prominent facial scar and alcohol quickly ageing him, his roles were limited and his days as a heart-throb were essentially over.

It’s believed the movie will look at much of his complicated life, but will concentrate on his relationship with Elizabeth Taylor, who became one of his closest friends after they starred in A Place In The Sun (it was while driving back from her house that he had his car crash). She was aware of his sexuality but later suggested it was difficult to truly help him, as he was so internally tormented.

The cable network’s involvement in the biopic is good news for Bomer, as back in July – around the time he was getting huge acclaim for his turn in The Normal Heart – he suggested that he thought the perfect home for the biopic would be HBO..

There isn’t a director currently attached, although as Ira Sachs is now co-writing, it wouldn’t be surprising if he ended up helming, even if it is a bit of a departure from the likes of Love Is Strange and Keep The Lights On.
