New Cinderella Trailer – Fresh look at Lily James & Richard Madden in a more magical fairy tale

December 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

CINDERELLA-character-poster1-slideA few weeks ago the main trailer for Disney’s live action Cinderella emerged, but there was a bit of problem – for a film based on a fairy tale, it didn’t look that magical. Indeed it looked like despite his success with Thor, director Kenneth Branagh may have returned to the somewhat journeyman role that’s hampered quite a few of his movies.

However now a new trailer has emerged via Disney New Zealand, which suggest there will indeed be a bit of enchantment in the film, even if most of comes from CGI.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

‘The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever.’

The movie is due out on March 27th, 2015. Take a look at the trailer and poster below. [Read more…]

Viola Davis May Have Just Joined The Suicide Squad

December 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

viola-davisTwo Oscar nominations failed to properly get Hollywood to pay attention to Viola Davis, but it appears that her turning helping people get away with murder on TV has finally made them take notice. Latino Review reports that after being rumoured for a while she’s been offered the role of Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad.

After the announcement that the likes of Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Tom Hardy, and Cara Delevingne would be in the squad, having no one playing Waller was a bit of a hole, as she’s the character who runs the show.

Waller is a former congressional aide and government agent who become a prison warder and the person in charge of the Suicide Squad, a group of captured supervillains who’ve agreed to go on potentially suicidal mission in the hope of redemption.

There is a problem though, Davis is hard at work on How To Get Away With Murder, and Suicide Squad is due to start shooting before Season 1 wraps. But assuming they can work things out, she’ll be joining the movie.

Knight of Cups Trailer – First look at Christian Bale in Terrence Malick’s film

December 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

knight-of-cups-pic1While Terrence Malick likes to take his time with films, there’s a chance we’ll be getting two 2015, as he shot a couple of movies back-to-back, the first of which, Knight Of Cups, will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. And now we have a trailer for the film.

As you’d expect from the director of The Tree Of Life and To The Wonder, it’s not a typical movie, as it was shot with no script, allowing the cast to improvise to Malick’s direction. However as the trailer shows, it does look like something a little different, with more energy, modernity and than we’re used to seeing from the helmer.

There’s no real synopsis, but the great cast includes Christian Bale alongside Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Jason Clarke, Joel Kinnaman, Joe Manganiello, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Armin Mueller-Stahl and the voice of Ben Kingsley.

The other Malick movie mentioned above doesn’t have a title yet, but it shares quite a few of the same actors and is set against the music scene. [Read more…]

Pacman, Donkey Kong & More Invade Earth In First Pixels Posters

December 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pixels-poster3Pixels has the potential to be one of the more interesting films of next summer, as anyone who’s seen the short it’s based on can attest. In that 8-bit video characters attack a city, turning it to pixels in the process. Many have wondered whether that same aesthetic will be brought into the film – and from the evident of these posters, it looks like it will.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (Kevin James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team’s unique weapons specialist. The action-comedy is directed by Chris Columbus from a story by Tim Herlihy and a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, based on the short film of the same name by Patrick Jean.’

The movie is due out July 24th, 2015, and hopefully we’ll get a trailer soon. [Read more…]

J.K. Simmons Joins Tom Hiddleston In Kong: Skull Island

December 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jk-simmonsA few weeks ago Tom Hiddleston became the first actor to sign up to star in Kong: Skull Island (which as the time was just known as Skull Island, before it got a more franchise friendly title). Now he’s got some company, as the always excellent J.K. Simmons has signed up too, according to Variety.

Few specific details have been released about the plot, or indeed either of the actors’ characters, but we do know it will be a prequel to King Kong, and that the movie will be entirely set on Skull Island, the mysterious place full of dinosaurs and monsters, along with giant apes. The speculation is that it will be about how Kong became the last of the giant gorillas, while also giving an explanation for how outsiders new about the island and so set sail to later find and capture Kong.

Back in October screenwriter John Gatins (Need for Speed, Real Steel) signed up to rewrite the original script by Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Seventh Son). Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to direct back, with March 10th, 2017 release date already pencilled in.

Cucumber, Banana, Tofu Teaser – Get a preview of Russell T. Davies’ gay-themed TV triptych

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cucumber-teaser-slideAs announced a while ago, Queer As Folk creator Russell T. Davies is returning to the world of gay-themed TV, and he’s doing it in style with three different shows – Cucumber, Banana and Tofu.

Now the first teaser for the shows has arrived, along with confirmation they’ll hit UK TV in January.

The central show, Cucumber, is about 46-year-old Henry (Vincent Franklin) and his boyfriend Lance (Cyril Nri) whose comfortable and settled existence is shattered after the most disastrous date night in history – involving a threesome, two police cars, and Bony M – and Henry’s new life begins. That will be eight 60-minute instalments that will be shown on Channel 4 in the UK.

Side-characters from Cucumber will then feed into the companion show, Banana, which will air on E4 in 30 minute episodes, while Tofu is a factual series focussing on sex and sexuality, that will take its themes from the shows. That series will be online.

(In case you’re wondering, the titles are references to comparisons Davies heard to the, err, level of a man’s excitedness).

The shows promise to look at the ‘passions and pitfalls of 21st Century gay life’, although those of you in the US may have to wait a while, as Davies has previously hinted it may be a little too hot for American TV. Hopefully we’ll get a better look soon. [Read more…]

Blackhat Trailer – Chris Hemsworth takes on Michael Mann’s thriller

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Blackhat-posterIn the wake of Sony Pictures dealing with the fallout from the raid on its computer and the subsequent leaking of huge amounts of confidential information, Blackhat feels like a very timely movie for Hollywood. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set within the world of global cybercrime, Legendary’s Blackhat follows a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.

‘Directed and produced by Michael Mann, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom, and it is written by Morgan Davis Foehl and Mann. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni produce alongside Mann, while Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod serve as the executive producers.’

New Inherent Vice Trailer – Fresh look at Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

inherent-vice-joaquin-phoenixDirected by Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson; Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro; Katherine Waterston, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newsom, Inherent Vice is released in the UK on January 30th 2015.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When private eye Doc Sportello’s (Joaquin Phoenix)ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

‘It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

‘With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

‘“Inherent Vice,” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel.’ [Read more…]

Wild Card Trailer – Jason Statham is in trouble with the mob

December 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wild-card-jason-stathamIn Wild Card Jason Statham spends 90 minutes writing poetry, playing with puppies and pondering the meaning of Sartre’s existentialist philosophy. Ok, no he does, he does what we’d expect and gets involved in some serious action.

The movie is a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds film Heat (no, not the Michael Mann one) and also stars Michael Angarano, Sofia Vergara, Jason Alexander, Hope Davis, and Stanley Tucci. Oddly though, while it is a remake, in some respects it’s actually the original, as it uses William Goldman’s initial screenplay, before it was tinkered with and in his opinions made worse for the 1986 version.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Nick Wild (Jason Statham) is a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal professional skills and a personal gambling problem. When a friend is beaten by a sadistic thug, Nick strikes back, only to find out the thug is the son of a powerful mob boss. Suddenly Nick is plunged into the criminal underworld, chased by enforcers and wanted by the mob. Having raised the stakes, Nick has one last play to change his fortunes… and this time, it’s all or nothing. From two-time Academy®Award-winning writer William Goldman (Best Original Screenplay, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969; Best Adapted Screenplay, All the President’s Men, 1976).’

The film’s in US cinemas at the end of January, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]
