Selma Trailer – David Oyelowo takes on a key moment in MLK’s civil rights struggle

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

selma-pic2You wouldn’t think making a movie about one of the most important moments in the Civil Rights struggle in the US would be that difficult to get off the ground, but Selma faced a massive struggle. Even with Lee Daniels directing and a high profile cast attached (including Hugh Jackman and others), it couldn’t get funding).

However now it’s finally happened, with Ava DuVernay directing and David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi Common, Carmen Ejogo, Lorraine Toussaint, Tim Roth, and Oprah Winfrey starring.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s SELMA tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.’

Selma opens in a few US cinemas on December 25th, 2014, and will go wide in early January. A February 6th UK release is planned. [Read more…]

Mark Wahlberg Will Be The Six Billion Dollar Man With Peter Berg Directing

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-wahlbergA few months ago rumours emerged that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg were thinking about making a movie version of The Six Million Dollar Man. It turns out that was correct, but six million doesn’t buy you what it did in the 1970s, so Deadline reports that it will now become The Six Billion Dollar Man. That’s inflation for you.

The movie is about Steve Austin (Wahlberg), a former astronaut who nearly dies after crashing an experimental plane. He is saved when scientists give him bionic replacements for both legs, his right arm and left eye. He becomes a powerful weapon for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence.

The TV series, which starred Lee Majors and ran for five seasons between 1974 and 1978, was based on the 1972 novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin.

It appears getting the movie off the ground hasn’t been plain sailing though. While Universal own the rights to The Six Million Dollar Man TV series and were said to be backing the film when it was first rumoured, in order to move things forwards The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films label has now stepped in to back the movie, although Universal may still part-finance.

Peter Berg, who previously worked with Wahlberg on Lone Survivor, will direct. They hope to shoot the film sometime next year for a 2016 release.

Toy Story 4 Is Officially Coming With John Lasseter Directing

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-lasseter-pixarRemember when Pixar was the company that hated sequels? That’s changed massively over the years, not least with the gargantuan success of the Toy Story series. While it appeared Toy Story 3 would be the end of the line – it certainly felt like a perfect conclusion – Disney & Pixar have now announced a fourth instalment.

John Lasseter, director of the first two Toy Story movies will helms the film, which promises to ‘open a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the Toy Story’ gang. The story was dreamt up by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three Toy Story films. That will now be turned into a script by the writing team of Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever).

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

The film already has a US release date of June 16th, 2017, and it should be out in the UK around the same time.

Fagbug Nation Trailer – Fighting for gay equality on a unique car-based mission

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fagbug-nation-slideIn 2007, Erin Davies’ VW Beetle was vandalized with a hateful slur while she was at a pride event.  Rather than be ashamed of what happened, the art teacher turned activist drove around with the word on her car for a year before getting it completely remodeled as the Fagbug, rainbow coloured and covered in pride. She then hit the road with her loud, out and proud message to raise awareness of LGBT rights and speak up where so many have been silenced.

Fagbug Nation takes you behind the wheel of what it’s like to drive the now famous Fagbug. With six years of touring under her belt, director and activist Erin Davies (Fagbug) has her mind set on getting her car to all 50 states, Hawaii and Alaska being the final two. To pull this off, Erin went 54 days without a car, put her car on 5 boats, and flew on 14 planes. The Fagbug gets lei’d in Hawaii and drives through the midnight sun to Alaska, but first makes a pit stop at the Equality House in Topeka, Kansas.

While on the road and at speaking events, Erin meets a diverse cast of characters and recounts what she’s experienced over the past half-decade: praise from those who have been helped to find their own voice, condemnation from bigots and those within the LGBT community who don’t agree with her methods, confusion and applause from all walks of life.

The film is out in the US on DVD & VoD on December 2nd. [Read more…]

Gale Harold & Van Hansis’ Gay Themed Murder Mystery Gets The Go Ahead

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gale-harold-van-hansisThis time last month we reported that a brand new gay-themed murder mystery, Kiss Me, Kill Me, was seeking funding on Kickstarter. Well now it’s announced that it got the cash it needs and the film has the greenlight. It’s now set to go into production in December.

While the movie initially sought $100,000 on Kickstarter with the hope that in an ideal world they’d end up with $125,000. But when the campaign ended it had raised an awesome $131,231.

Kiss Me, Kill Me is a contemporary Alfred Hitchcock/Agatha Christie-style ‘who-done-it’, with the mystery centered on Dusty, who confronts his unfaithful boyfriend and blacks-out, only to wake up to find his boyfriend murdered and he’s the prime suspect.

The picture stars Gale Harold, playing a gay character for the first time since his iconic performance as Brian Kinney on Showtime’s Queer as Folk, and three-time Emmy nominee Van Hansis, from As the World Turns, and the acclaimed Eastsiders.

The month-long crowd-funding effort caused a groundswell among supporters, whose fan-made artwork, videos and music aided the campaign on social media. Director Caspers Andreas says he is beyond thrilled with the outpouring of support for the film: “The huge success of this campaign is a reminder how important movies with LGBT content are to audiences.” He continues, “Hollywood is not producing these sort of films, and we would not be able to do it without the fans.”

Joining Harold and Hansis is an impressive cast, including Willam Belli (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Kit Williamson (Eastsiders, Mad Men), Independent Spirit nominee Yolonda Ross (Go For Sisters), Tom Lenk (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Brianna Brown (Devious Maids), Jonathan Lisecki (Gayby), Michael Maize (True Blood), Craig Robert Young (NCIS: Los Angeles), Jackie Monahan (Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same), as well as Matthew Ludwinski and Allison Lane, who both previously starred in Andreas’ Going Down in LA-LA Land.

Ben Whishaw Talks About Trying To Come Out With Dignity

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lilting-ben-whishawComing out is rarely an easy thing to do, and that’s as true for celebrities as it is for everyone else. In days gone past famous gay people were either outed or they did big, splashy interviews were they had to divulge every detail of their life (which they often did under the threat of being outed if they didn’t).

However in recent years it’s become a lot simpler, with an increasing amount of celebs releasing short, simple statements, authorising brief mentions of same sex partners in newspaper articles or thanking their partner when they receive an award.

Ben Whishaw went the simple statement route, with his reps releasing the following in August 2013: ‘Due to speculation, I can confirm that Ben and Mark [Bradshaw] entered into a civil partnership in August 2012. They were proud to do so and are very happy. Ben has never hidden his sexuality, but like many actors he prefers not to discuss his family or life outside of his work.’

Now he’s been talking about coming out and the difficulty finding a dignified way to do it. Talking to Marie Clare (via Radio Times), he says, “I suppose now I’m very grateful that it happened the way it did. It was never a secret, everyone around me in my life knew, it’s just very hard to know how to say it, in a way, with some sort of dignity and to remain private. It was something that happened at that time and now I’m very happy it’s just a fact and I can get on with life.”

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Trailer – Can’t Middle Earth people just learn to get along?

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-battle-of-five-armies-poster1-slideIn just over a month we’ll be going back into Middle Earth for the last time (probably) with the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. To give us a taste of what we can expect, the full trailer has now arrived, which you can watch below.

As you would expect, the trailer is big on battle (which presumably involves five armies) and suggests this instalment certainly won’t be lacking in action. Indeed rumours already suggest the final battle itself will last for more than 45 minutes.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

‘“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and the Company of Dwarves. The Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but now must face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon, Smaug, upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

‘As he succumbs to dragon-sickness, the King Under the Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield, sacrifices friendship and honor in his search for the legendary Arkenstone. Unable to help Thorin see reason, Bilbo is driven to make a desperate and dangerous choice, not knowing that even greater perils lie ahead. An ancient enemy has returned to Middle-earth. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide—unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends as five great armies go to war.’

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is released in UK cinemas 12 December 2014. [Read more…]

Star Wars Episode VII’s Title Is Announced, So What Is It?

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-episode-vii-title-cardEven before the notoriously secretive JJ Abrams came onboard, Disney was keeping the possible full titles of Star Wars Episode VII close to its chest. However, with the House Of Mouse announcing that principal photography has officially come to an end, they’ve also decided to let us know what the movie will actually be called.

And here it is: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Undoubtedly this will start a lot of chatter, not least that it appears Disney has dropped Episode VII from the title , which could just be a refocusing in light of Lucasfilm’s attempts to extend the universe with multiple films (not all of which will be direct sequels to this film). It could also be an attempt to sell this as being something new, rather than just a continuation of George Lucas’ opus.

There’s also the title itself, which is bound to be loved by some and loathed by others. To my mind, it sounds like a computer game, but at least it isn’t as bad as The Phantom Menace. It also makes you wonder how the Force will be awakening, as it wasn’t exactly silent in the earlier movies. The new title suggests perhaps we’ll see an evolution from what’s gone before.

The main immediate speculation is that while Lucas’s vision said their could only be two Sith who were at one with the Dark Side of the Force, here there could be many more. After all, everything had to start over after Return Of The Jedi, with only Luke Skywalker left who had any Jedi skills, so it may be that the rules aren’t the same with a proper Jedi Order presiding over things.

And just so you know we’re not making it up, here’s Disney’s official Twitter announcement: [Read more…]

Rose McGowan Tries To Clarify Comments Blasting Gays For Misogyny

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rose-mcgowanActress Rose McGowan came under fire yesterday due to comments she made during an appearance on Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast, where she lambasted gay men for what she perceives as their misogyny and lack of support for women’s rights. She had earlier courted controversy for holding a party to support Brunei-owned hotels which were facing a boycott launched by LGBT groups angry over the sultanate bringing in laws that made gay sex a crime you could be executed for.

She has now tried to clarify her comments, stepping back from the language she used but saying she sticks by the point she was trying to make.

In the original podcast she said (via Female First), “Gay men are as misogynistic as straight men, if not more so. I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I’m actually really upset with them… You wanna talk about the fact that I have heard nobody in the gay community, no gay males, standing up for women on any level?

“There is Sharia law active in Saudi Arabia, there’s a woman who’s about to be stoned – have not heard [AIDS activist] Cleve Jones discuss her, and nor will he. I think it’s what happens to you as a group when you are starting to get most of what you fought for. What do you do now? What I would hope they would do is extend a hand to women. Women, by-and-large, have very much helped the gay community get to where they are today.

“And I have not seen a single peep from these people, who supposedly represent lesbians as well… when the equal pay act was shut down by Republicans in the Senate, not a single man mentioned that. I see now people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange speedo and take molly [the drug MDMA]. [Gay misogyny] is a huge problem.”

Now she has stepped forward to clarify in an article that has appeared on the likes of Huffpo and The Advocate. In it she says, “I was on Bret Easton Ellis’s podcast the other day discussing sexism and misogyny. I made a dumb generalization, and for that I apologize. For everything else I said, no, I will not. Where does it say that because of a man’s sexual orientation, I don’t get to point out a character defect that some of them may have? When equal pay for women was voted down by every male Republican, there was no LGBT outcry. I wondered why that was. After all, lesbians are women — this affects them too, right?

“Misogyny infuriates me and it endangers me as a human. It also endangers the LGBT community. Empathy for the plight of women isn’t making it better. Your voice will. Could I have articulated my frustration in a better fashion? Undoubtedly. For that I apologize, but I stand by my overall point. The rights that have been earned by the community are simple civil rights.”

She goes on to add, “Do I think the LGBT community needs to address and combat the misogyny in its midst? Absolutely. I’ve lived and breathed gay rights for as long as I can remember. I’ve seen so much change, and now I want more. Women, myself included, have given blood, sweat, and tears to the gay rights movement. I’m asking for help in return. Casual and accepted misogyny no longer works for me, and it shouldn’t work for you.”

I’m not sure it’s a good tactic to make statements that generalise massively and lambast an entire section of the community and then ask for their help, but perhaps she thinks it will wake some people up. However I do have issues with some of her language. After all, one of the main issues the women’s movement has faced is men who generalise, stereotype and try to fit women into preconceived boxes (bitch, slut, homely, mother, etc.) rather than treating them as individual human beings, which seems similar to what McGowan is doing with gay people here – treating them as a collective. It’s also true that if a gay man does step up to support women’s rights or any other cause, they may not do it with a rainbow tattooed on their forehead.

However in her article she’s keen to point out, “And as for those who question my allegiance to the gay community and try to paint me as a gay hater, I have a big eye roll reserved just for you. I’m human, I mess up, but I mess up with love and good intentions. I feel like I’m in a fight with my family. Now, let’s go do the right thing, myself included.”

The Gambler Trailer – Mark Wahlberg makes some dangerous bets

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gambler-poster1After a teaser a few weeks ago, the full trailer for Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming movie The Gambler has now arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Synopsis: Jim Bennett (Academy Award®-nominee Mark Wahlberg) is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award®-winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…’
