September 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zachary-quintoIt was NBC that helped launch Zachary Quinto’s career into the stratosphere with Heroes, and now Deadline reports that he’s heading back to the network for their new mini-series, The Slap.

The show is based on the acclaimed 2011 Australian series of the same name (which was in turn inspired by Christos Tsiolkas’ 2008 novel), with Quinto’s playing the character who’s central to the titular event. He’ll be car dealer Henry, who’s living in Brooklyn with his wife and teenage son. However their lives and though of all those around them erupt into turmoil after the somewhat volatile Henry slaps a neighbour’s misbehaving son at a party. Soon all sorts of long hidden issues and problem are emerging out of the woodwork, while Harry gets a lawsuit slapped on him.

Brian Cox will also star as a character called Manolis, who’ve described as being the patriarch of the family.

Quinto and Cox join the previously cast Peter Sarsgaard and Mary Louise Parker, who will play Harry’s cousin Hector and his friend Anouk.

The show in expected to air sometime in the first half of next year.

New Annie Posters Mix The Old And The New

September 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

annie-international-posterSony is hoping that this Christmas audiences will be in the mood for a classic musical with a modern twist when they unleash their new version of Annie. Now we get to take a fresh look with the international and domestic posters for the movie, which mix a classic look with the new cast.

The music has been given a bit of an update under the eye of Jay-Z and Will Smith, although Annie will still be wondering whether the sun will come out tomorrow and having a hard luck life.

The plot also remains the same, with orphan Annie (Quvenzhane Wallis) living in the foul orphanage run by Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). She’s then taken in by the filthy rich Benjamin Stacks (Jamie Foxx). In this version he’s running for office and initially just wants Annie so the press will see him being nice to an orphan. However he soon falls for the plucky youngster’s charms. But then Annie’s real parents are found, or are they?

Ted 2 Adds Morgan Freeman To The Mix

September 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

morgan-freemanmorgan-freemanIf you need to add an extra bit of class to your movie, casting Morgan Freeman is always a good idea. Seth MacFarlane obviously agrees as Variety reports the Family Guy creator has cast the actor in a pivotal role in Ted 2.

There’s no news on the exact plot, but Freeman is being brought in to play an iconic civil rights lawyer who helps talking soft toy Ted with his legal problems.

Mark Wahlberg is also set to return John Bennett, with Amanda Seyfried playing the new female lead. Mila Kunis will also be in the movie, but she’ll apparently have a much smaller role than she did in the first film.

Production is already underway in Boston, with MacFarlane directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild. It’s due out summer 2015.

First Look At Chris Salvatore & Charlie David In Matt Riddlehoover’s Gay-Themed Comedy Paternity Leave

September 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chris-Salvatore-Charlie-David-Paternity-LeaveWhile we won’t get to see the new comedy Paternity Leave until 2015, our first look at the movie has slipped out with a making of… featurette, which gives us our first view of the gorgeous likes of Charlie David, Chris Salvatore, and Jacob York in the film, as well as director Matt Riddlehoover (Scenes From A Gay Marriage) hard at work on the set. Take a look at it below.

In the film Greg (Jacob York) finds out that he’s pregnant with his partner Ken’s (Charlie David) baby. Dumbstruck by the news, their relationship takes twists and turns through hardship and hilarity, while we’re left wondering if they’re going to make it through the most unexpected and difficult period of their lives together. Chris Salvatore also stars.

However to get it all finished it needs your help, as the movie has launched an IndieGoGo campaign with the hope of raising $5,000 in post-production funding, which will help with things such as 2nd unit photography, editing, sound mix, music licensing, and color correction. So if you want to make sure Chris, Charlie and Jacob look and sound all they they should be, you’ll have to head over the IndieGoGo.

And if you need to know why they should always look their best, take a look at the pics of Chris Salvatore and Charlie David in the links. [Read more…]

Trans Model Andreja Pejic Seeks Funding For Documentary About Her Life

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

andreja-pejicFor the last few years Andreja Pejic has been making waves in the fashion world, gaining headlines for appearing on the catwalk modelling for both male and female clothing lines, known as an androgynous male model who spoke about living in-between genders.

However, underneath this she was dealing with gender dysphoria and this year Andreja revealed that she was now living as a woman and had completed sex reassignment surgery.

What make Pejic’s story all the more remarkable is that she’s come a very long, having spent part of her early life in a Serbian refugee camp to escape the war that was raging in her home country.

Now Andreja and filmmaker Eric hope to turn her story into a documentary, called Andrej(a), and they’ve launched a Kickstarter hoping to raise $200,000 to get the film completed.

On the funding page, Pejic writes, ‘On a snowy winter day in New York City, as I sat in my favorite Thai restaurant eating dinner with my dear friend and filmmaker Eric, along with his wife, I announced awkwardly “Eric, I have to tell you something. It’s intense. I don’t want to involve anyone else, just you. It’s very personal, I’ve told no one in the business, not even my agent. I am going to have SRS (sexual reassignment surgery) in two weeks!”

‘At that point in time I didn’t have a strong desire to share what was about to happen with anyone but a few very close friends, certainly not a camera! Eric’s words changed my view forever.

‘“This is a powerful part of an immensely courageous journey, we need to film this!” Eric said, his eyes beaming with excitement. “Your story is so unique. It has the potential to reach so many and to help millions of young people around the world. You need to do this! You know how many trans people (and people in general) are out there hiding, forced to live as someone they are not. You could give them hope by going public about this.”

‘Eric had filmed me several times before for fashion gigs and other small pieces. If I was going to allow any camera to follow me through the most challenging period of my life, it was his. That is how this documentary was born, and since then it has become one my life’s missions. I ask you, fellow Kickstarters, to join and help me complete the film. I hope that by sharing my humanity, pain, tears, laughter, joy, and biggest struggles on film, it will shed light on what it means to live as a transgender individual. I have always believed that differences between people should not equal divisions and I simply want to create something that could help build a bridge between my community and the rest of the world.’

Take a look at the funding video below and head over to Kickstarter for more info. [Read more…]

Lily Tomlin Will Be The First Out Lesbian To Receive The Kennedy Center Honors

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lily-tomlinThere is little doubt that the Kennedy Center Honors – given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime contribution – is one of the highest accolades in the US for actors, singers, composers, dancers and other artists. However no openly gay woman has ever been given the award – until now, that is.

It’s been announced that actress and comedian Lily Tomlin will be one of the five recipients of this year’s honors, alongside singer Al Green, actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, and singer-songwriter Sting.

There have been previous female honorees who’ve been rumoured to be gay or bisexual, but Tomlin will be first one who out, and certainly the first one married to another woman.

It’s perhaps particularly surprising as the Kennedy Center hasn’t shied away from honoring gay and bisexual men, ranging from Tennessee Williams to Elton John, but for some reason no openly lesbian has previously been given the award.

Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein comments, “From the days of her early television and theatrical appearances, Lily Tomlin has made us laugh and continues to amaze us with her acting talent and quick wit.”

The Kennedy Center Honors medallions willbe presented on Saturday, December 6th, at a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry. On the Sunday there will be a White House Reception where Tomlin and co. will meet the President ahead of the Honors Gala in the evening, which will be recorded for a two-hour primetime TV special to be braodcast on Tuesday, December 30th at 9:00 pm.

Benedict Cumberbatch Talks Homophobia & The Need For A Gay President

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-slideWith The Imitation Game premièring at the Toronto International Film Festival, Benedict Cumberbatch has been talking to The Daily Beast. And as he’s playing a gay character, the interview touches on his experiences of witnessing homophobia when he was at school, how the US needs a gay president and the fact he things gay cure therapies are ‘horrifying’.

He’s not impressed either by how the character he plays in The Imitation Game, Alan Turing, was sidelined largely because of sexuality, despite the fact the made one of the most important steps towards ending World War II by devising a way to crack the Enigma Code, as well as laying the groundwork for modern computers. “He’s not as prominent as he should be. That’s the tragedy isn’t it, really?” Cumberbatch says.

As for gay cure therapies, he thinks, “There are courses and doctors and meds handed out to ‘cure’ people of their homosexuality, and it’s shocking that it still goes on. It’s also shocking that any time there’s any kind of hardship, the minorities are immediately scapegoated—and that includes homosexuals in Russia, the Golden Dawn in Greece. The Golden Dawn came out of a financial crisis and people wanted answers, and the minute you start stirring up nationalistic feelings, minorities are the first people to get it because they’re the easiest to scapegoat. It’s terrifying.”

While talking about the homophobia still present in the US, Cumberbatch adds, “You need to have a female president next, and then after that, a gay president. That’s the full journey from Obama’s legacy onwards.”

As for witnessing homophobia firsthand, he relates a tale from his schooldays, saying, “In an all-male boarding school, in the olden days, it was seen as being something that ‘just happened’ since there were no girls, so you had a bit of an experience. But there was incredible homophobia at my school, to the point where two boys who were caught doing something were literally chased down the street.

“I was 18. Two boys who were just discovered in bed together doing something, and it was shocking. I was just finishing an essay in the school dining hall at breakfast, and I looked out the window and heard a commotion, a pair of feet scampering by, and then a horde just charging after shouting, ‘Wankers! Faggots!’ and I thought, ‘What the fuck is going on?’ I asked these kids coming back from the house who were breathless from the hunt, ‘What are you doing, you insane idiots? What the fuck?'”

First Look At A Super-Bearded (& Shirtless) Chris Pine, Patrick Wilson & More In Joe Carnahan’s Stretch

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stretch-pic5-slideJoe Carnahan may have dabbled in the world of blockbusters with The A-Team, but it looks like he’s going for something far more idiosyncratic with Stretch – at least that’s what that first pics released via the film’s Twitter account suggest.

It also gives Chris Pine the chance to find out what he would look like as a crazy-bearded man who spends all day at the gym, while Patrick Wilson gets a subtle hint about what people think of him (just see what we mean below), while Jessica Alba channels her inner nerd by following the movie rule that glasses and a ponytail = plain girl.

Wilson plays the central role of a downtrodden man who takes a job as a limo driver to pay off his gambling debts. His first client is an eccentric billionaire (Chris Pine), whose bizarre requests take a toll on the driver’s sanity throughout one crazy night.

Ed Helms, Brooklyn Decker, James Badge Dale, David Hasselhoff, Ray Liotta, and Shaun Toub are amongst the strong supporting cast.

It’s not clear when the low-budget film will hit cinemas. [Read more…]

Out Filmmaker Todd Haynes Takes On Reese Witherspoon’s Peggy Lee Biopic

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Todd-HaynesBack in 2010 Reese Witherspoon revealed she wanted to go back into the world of music biopics which had served her with Walk The Line, as she started developing a movie about Peggy Lee that your also planned to star in.

It’s taken a long time, but now the film has inched forward with the news that Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far From Heaven) is set to direct.

Nora Ephron was previously attached to write and direct, but her death in 2014 put the project into  although the project stalled after she passed away in June 2012. Since then Doug Wright (Quills, Two Lovers) has been working on the screenplay though.

It’s not known exactly what direction the movie will take as Peggy Lee’s story doesn’t come with the usual trappings of a musical biopic, such as drug addiction and early death. However she was an incredible force in the incredibly male dominated music world, scoring no. 1s not just as a singer, but also by writing hits for other artists and becoming a mentor and inspiration to everyone from Frank Sinatra to Paul McCartney.

She also wasn’t afraid to change, starting off as a big band singer, moving through jazz, and doing covers of rock ‘n’ roll songs when they became popular. She also acted, including voicing several characters in Lady & The Tramp.

The openly gay Haynes first made his name as a leading light in the New Queer Cinema movement in the 1990s, thanks to films such as Poison, [Safe] and Velvet Goldmine. He also found huge acclaim for his 2011 mini-series version of Mildred Pierce, starring Kate Winslet.
