February 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

We haven’t seen Tom Hardy for a while – indeed his last movie was The Dark Knight Rises – however he’s got plenty of movies coming up, including Locke. Now we have the poster for the movie, which you can take a look at above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) plays Ivan Locke. LOCKE is the story of one man’s life unravelling in a tension-fuelled 90-minute race against time. Ivan Locke has the perfect family, his dream job, and tomorrow should be the crowning moment of his career. But one phone call will force him to make a decision that will put it all on the line.’

It also stars Ruth Wilson, Olivia Colman, Andrew Scott, Tom Holland, Bill Milner. The movie’s due out in the UK on 18th April 2014.

Thomas Jane Goes Behind The Veil For A Micro-Budget Chiller

February 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thomas-janeJason Blum seems to produce about half of the films coming out of Hollywood nowadays due to his knack for making popular films on extremely tiny budgets, such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and Sinister. Now he’s got a new one and Thomas Jane has signed on to star, according to THR.

The movie is called The Veil, and ‘springs from the real-world headlines of religious cults and mass suicides’. The story starts three decades ago, when members of the Heaven’s Veil  religious cult kill themselves. The only one who may know what really happened is the sole survivor, a five-year-old girl. However the truth is buried deep in her memories. She returns to the scene of the mass suicide as an adult, taking a documentary crew along with him. As you’d expect with this sort of movie, it turns out things aren’t as they appear and something terrifying is lurking.

Robert Ben Garant wrote the script. It’s a bit of a departure for him, as normally (alongside Thomas Lennon) the Reno 9ll co-creator has written mainstream family entertainment such as the Night at the Museum films.

Phil Joanou will direct, who previously worked with Jane on the popular unauthorised short, The Punisher: Dirty Laundry. The movie will be shoot in April.

February 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrick-wilsonPatrick Wilson will be showing us his Zipper, as Variety reports that he’s signed up for a movie going by that name, which is also due to star Richard Dreyfuss and Lena Headey.

The indie drama will see ‘Dreyfuss portray the role of political operator and kingmaker. Wilson is playing successful family man who presumably has it all until he risks losing everything due to his inability to fight off his obsessive temptation for other women’.

Mora Stephens is set to direct, and she’s also co-writing the script alongside Joel Viertel. Darren Aronofsky is producing. The movie has already started shooting in Louisiana.

George Clooney Plans Remake Of Norwegian Thriller Pioneer

February 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

george-clooneyHe may have only just released The Monuments Men, but George Clooney isn’t resting up, as he and producing partner Grant Heslov are teaming with Sony Pictures to remake the Norwegian thriller Pioneer. At the moment Clooney isn’t attached to direct, and they’ve only just started to look for a screenwriter.

Here’s the synopsis from the upcoming UK cinema release of the original version, ‘PIONEER comes from the producers of Headhunters, the director of the original Insomnia – Erik Skjoldbjærg, and stars Aksel Hennie and Wes Bentley. This tense thriller is set in the early 1980s, at the beginning of the Norwegian Oil Boom. Enormous oil and gas deposits are discovered in the North Sea and the authorities aim to bring the oil ashore through a pipeline from depths of 500 metres. Professional diver Petter (Hennie) is obsessed with reaching the bottom of the Norwegian Sea, and is one of very few, along with his brother Knut, with the skill, discipline, strength and courage to take on this highly dangerous mission. But a sudden, tragic accident changes everything, sending Petter on a perilous journey on which he loses sight of who’s pulling the strings. Gradually he realizes that he is in way over his head and that his life is at stake.
Elizabeth Cantillon is overseeing the project for Sony. The original thriller starred Wes Bentley, Stephen Lang and Aksel Hennie.’

There’s no news on when we might see the remake, although the original hits UK cinemas in April.

John Singleton Back On For Tupac Shakur Biopic

February 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-singletonTwo years ago director John Singleton was attached to direct a biopic about Tupac Shakur. However he then stepped away from the movie. Now though he’s back, as Variety reports that has finalised a deal to direct the currently untitled movie, which was formerly known as Tupac.

It’s also been revealed that the Shaft and 2 Fast 2 Furious filmmaker will produce and re-write the script, which has been previously been worked on by Steven Bagatourian, Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson.

Producers  are now focusing their efforts on finding the right actor to play Tupac. They need to get someone relatively soon, as they hope to start shooting as early as this June. The film will chart the rapper’s rise to success, as well as his murder in 1996, after a Las Vegas boxing match, which still has not been solved.

The idea of a Tupac biopic has had a long and a tumultuous history. That has included a legal battle between Morgan Creek Productions and the rapper’s mother Afeni Shakur over his life rights. The case was eventually settled, with Afeni Shakur now serving as executive producer.

Ben Whishaw Starrer Lilting To Open BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lilting-ben-whishaw
It’s just over a month until the 28th London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival opens on March 20th, and now the BFI has announced the movie that will get a gala screening on that first night – the Sundance Award Winner, Lilting.

Hong Khaou’s poetic drama of love and loss will get it’s European premiere at the event. UK based Khaou made his name with the successful gay-themed shorts Spring and Summer, both of which featured in the popular Boys On Film DVD series. Lilting is his first feature film and stars Ben Whishaw, Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Andrew Leung, and Peter Bowles. It picked up a cinematography prize at Sundance.

Khaou commented, “I’m so thrilled Lilting will be opening the LLGFF. It’s a wonderful film festival to kick off our home and European premiere. It feels like a perfect fit to have it in London and at the BFI. I’m thankful Clare and her team have given us such a prestigious slot, it shows a lot of love and faith in Lilting.”

Here’s the synopsis for the movie: ‘Staggering from loss after the recent death of his lover Kai, Richard (Ben Whishaw) reaches out to Kai’s mother Junn  (Crouching Tiger’s Cheng Pei Pei), a Chinese-Cambodian woman who has never assimilated or learned English in her 20-something years in London. Kai was Junn’s lifeline to the world; she relied on him for everything, but despite this enforced intimacy, he never came out to her and Junn remains fiercely critical of Richard through a fugue of maternal jealousy and denial.

‘British director Hong Khaou’s film uses a cinematic idiom all of its own, weaving narrative strands from past and present, real and imagined, between mother and son and also between Richard and Kai (a boyishly beautiful Andrew Leung). Lingering, tender scenes of the lovers are dreamily captured by Weekend cinematographer Ula Pontikos (who deservedly nabbed a Sundance award). While serious and moving as a study of loss, Lilting also gracefully incorporates humour and warmth through a subplot in which Junn is wordlessly courted by an elderly Englishman (Peter Bowles), aided by a translator supplied by Richard.

‘A lyrical exploration of the pleasures and pains of communication, produced under the auspices of Film London’s hugely successful Microwave scheme, this is a precious British film to celebrate. It’s also a sophisticated portrait of a gay male relationship that goes beyond the first flushes of love to the heights and bittersweet depths of sharing a life, albeit briefly, with someone you love.’

The full programme of the LLGFF (20th-30th March, 2014) will bee announced on Wednesday 19th February at BFI. Programmers promise a bumper festival with 50 features, as a new VOD strand through the BFI Player, which will offer a collection of contemporary and archive LGBT film available to stream. We’re also promise a previously unseen Derek Jarman work.

Russell Crowe, Logan Lerman & More Get Noah Character Posters

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

It hasn’t been a smooth road to the big screen for Darren Arnofsky’s Noah. It took him years to get backing for the movie and it seems even after the gave it the greenlight, Paramount has still been a little nervous, particularly trying to ensure Christians – who could be a massive audience for the movie – would like this idiosyncratic take on the bible story.

Now four character posters for the film have been released – featuring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Leman and Ray Winston – and Aronofsky has been talking to THR about the difficult he had with test screenings.

Paramount showed various versions to all sorts of Christian groups, who made some suggestions for changes. The director was against holding these tests in the first place and says, “I was upset — of course. No one’s ever done that to me. There was a rough patch. I imagine if I made comedies and horror films, it would be helpful. In dramas, it’s very, very hard to do. I’ve never been open to it.”

However the studio eventually went with Darren Aronofsky’s own version. He comments, “I’m a great closer. I’ve never reshot a frame, and I think that’s very odd on big-budget movies. We’re meticulous. We come from independent film, with limited resources. They tried what they wanted to try, and eventually they came back. My version of the film hasn’t been tested… It’s what we wrote and what was greenlighted.”

As for whether it’s true to the Bible of he, he comments, “I had no problem completely honoring and respecting everything in the Bible and accepting it as truth. Of course, my production designer [Mark Friedberg] had a million ideas of what it could look like, but I said, ‘No, the measurements are right there.’ We wanted to smash expectations of who Noah is. The first thing I told Russell is, ‘I will never shoot you on a houseboat with two giraffes behind you.’ … You’re going to see Russell Crowe as a superhero, a guy who has this incredibly difficult challenge put in front of him and has to overcome it.”

Brick Mansions Trailer – First look at Paul Walker’s final completed movie

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While we will see Paul Walker in Fast & Furious 7, he never got to finish his role in that movie. His last completed film is Brick Mansions, which has now released its first trailer and poster.

Here’s the synopsis for this remake of the French movie, District B13: ‘In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (David Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when drug kingpin, Tremaine (RZA) kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city. With stylized action featuring thrilling Parkour stunts (David Belle is the co-founder of this physical training discipline), Brick Mansions puts an entertaining twist on the action genre.’

The movie’s due out in the US in April. [Read more…]

New Transcendence Trailer – Fresh look at the Johnny Depp sci-fi

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In a couple of months we’ll get to see the very intriguing looking Transcendence. After a poster yesterday comes a fresh trailer with plenty of new footage from the Johnny Depp sci-fi.

And if it also brings to mind Inception, it’s probably little coincidence this is the directorial debut of that movie’s cinematographer, Wally Pfister.

Here the synopsis: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.’

Transcendence co-stars Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Kate Mara. The film is due out in April. [Read more…]
