The Butler Director Lee Daniels Says My Father ‘Just Kept Beating Me For Being Gay’

September 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lee-danielsLee Daniels’ directorial career has certainly grown in the past few years thanks to Precious, The Paperboy and his recent hit, The Butler. He’s one of the few African-American directors currently having success in Hollywood and has also never made a secret of the fact he’s gay.

Now he’s been talking about the difficulties he faced growing up gay and black, not least his father’s violent reaction to finding out his son liked boys.

In an interview with US radio station KCRW, he says, “I ran from that for such a long time – my identity – because I was beaten for it, and then my dad died and I was sort of happy that he did because I dunno that I would have been alive, he’d just kept beating me for being gay. So my mom didn’t want me around cause then… in the African American community we don’t embrace that [being gay]. You know, we simply don’t because men have to be strong and being gay is not a good thing. And so my mom took me to an all-white school… at that point I went from being ‘gay, gay, gay’ to ‘n—er, n—er, n—er.’ …It’s a very, very, very painful experience to live and I try to show that in all of my work, you know, the personal atrocities that I’ve lived.”

You can listen to the interview with Daniels below. [Read more…]

Will Daniel Radcliffe Play Freddie Mercury In A New Biopic?

September 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe

We’re not sure about this one, as while the story has been picked up by the usually reputable The Guardian, it appears the first report came from the, uh, not always trustworthy Daily Star, but they say Daniel Radcliffe may play Freddie Mercury in a planned biopic.

Sacha Baron Cohen had been due to play the gay icon, but he recently dropped out citing creative differences. He wanted a gritty warts-and-all look at Freddie’s life, while the surviving members of Queen apparently wanted a PG rated film.

The Daily Star’s source says, “Daniel has been told the part is his if he wants it.” That’s a long way from him agreeing (or indeed even knowing the offer has been made in anything other than the Daily Star’s head), and he’d certainly be a very different choice to Cohen, who seemed like a perfect fit.

Radcliffe could be interesting though, but the real question is whether he’ll want to play gay again so soon after Kill Your Darlings. The source also says, “Plus, he’s closer in height to Freddie than Sacha, who’s much taller. Daniel can really sing, too.”

We’ll have to wait and see if Daniel does end up in the role.

New Under The Skin Trailer – Scarlett Johansson is an alien in Scotland

September 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Under The Skin is generating some interest at film festivals, with some pulled in by Jonathan Glazer’s unusual sci-fi film, while others remain unconvinced. Now a new trailer has arrived so we can get a feel for the movie ourselves.

Scarlett Johansson an alien on earth (in Scotland, no less), disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman. She scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey – her voracious sexuality. She is deadly efficient, but over time becomes drawn to and changed by the complexity of life on earth. With this new found humanity and weakening alien resolve, she finds herself on a collision course with her own kind. Taking her point of view throughout, the film presents a unique look at our world through alien eyes.

The plot is essentially Species but as the trailer shows, this is something stranger and more interesting. [Read more…]

First Look At Lily James As Disney’s Live-Action Cinderella

September 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cinderella-preview-pic1
Disney has announced that their new live action Cinderella has started shooting, and they’ve also taken the opportunity to give us our first look at the movie, with Downton Abbey’s Lily James in the title role, looking suitably fairy-tale as she gallops along on a grey horse.

Here’s the press release that announced the start of filming: Walt Disney Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun at Pinewood Studios in London, on “Cinderella,” Disney’s first-ever live action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale.

Directed by Academy Award®-nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Jack Ryan,” “Thor”), the film stars Lily James (“Downton Abbey,” “Wrath of the Titans”) in the title role, Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones,” “Birdsong”) as the Prince, Oscar®-winner Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) as the infamous stepmother Lady Tremaine, and Academy Award-nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”) as the Fairy Godmother. Holliday Grainger (“Great Expectations,” “Anna Karenina”) and Sophie McShera (“Downton Abbey,” “Waterloo Road”) play Ella’s stepsisters Anastasia and Drisella, respectively. Stellan Skarsgård (“The Avengers,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) and Nonso Anozie (“Game of Thrones,” “The Grey”) play the Arch Grand Duke and the Prince’s loyal friend, the Captain. Tony® Award-winner Derek Jacobi portrays the King.

“Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: First Class,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”), David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “Jack Ryan”), from a screenplay by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).

The filmmaking team includes three-time Academy Award-winning production designer Dante Ferretti (“The Aviator,” “Hugo,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”), three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell (“The Aviator,” “The Young Victoria,” “Shakespeare in Love”), director of photography Haris Zambarloukos (“Sleuth,” “Thor”) and Academy Award-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “Clash of the Titans”).

The timeless story of “Cinderella” dates back to 1697 when first created by Charles Perrault, although it truly came to life for millions all over the world in 1950 with Walt Disney’s celebrated animated feature.

Director Kenneth Branagh says: “It is impossible to think of Cinderella without thinking of Disney and the timeless images we’ve all grown up watching. And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming “Kit.” Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Production on “Cinderella” will take place at Pinewood Studios and locations throughout England.

“Cinderella” will be released through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in 2015.

Colin Farrell & Paula Patton May Go To World of Warcraft

September 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Colin-FarrellRecent reports have suggested that Duncan Jones wants to start shooting his planned adaptation of World Of Warcraft in January, so he doesn’t have too long to fill out the cast. Now Deadline reports that actress Paula Patton has entered negotiations for a lead role in Legendary Entertainment’s film, with an offer also going out to Colin Farrell for another starring role.

Farrell apparently isn’t sure whether or not he will accept the offer, with sources claiming there is a 50/50 chance he will star. It’s not known who either actor will play.

The World of Warcraft video game debuted on PC formats in 1994, where players from around the world take part in the epic conflict between the Horde and the Alliance. Charles Leavitt (Seventh Son) wrote the screenplay, although there’s been no news about the plot of the movie version,

Sam Raimi (who was previously set to direct) will produce alongside Charles Roven and Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Music video from the gay-themed film Five Dances

September 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Five Dances is a beautiful looking movie. We first posted the trailer for it back in December 2012. However it’s only now that it’s heading for release, with screenings in the US starting October 4th, while a UK DVD release is set for October 28th.

Now a music video for a song from the film has arrived, showing off footage from the gay-themed dance film, as well as Scott Matthews’ tune, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, from his album, Unlearned. Take a look above.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘The classic tale of finding success and romance in the big city is given a contemporary, and unconventional, spin in Alan Brown’s new film, FIVE DANCES. Collaborating with internationally renowned choreographer Jonah Bokaer, writer-director Brown has taken five gifted New York dancers, and fashioned a story about Chip (Ryan Steele in his first film role), an extraordinarily talented 18 year-old recently arrived from Kansas who joins a small downtown modern dance company. In his first weeks of rehearsal, Chip is initiated into the rites of passage of a New York dancer’s life, where discipline and endless hard work, camaraderie and competitiveness, the fear of not being good enough, and the joy of getting it just right, inform every minute of every day.

‘Shooting in and around a Soho dance studio, Brown and his longtime cinematographer Derek McKane capture the exhilaration and emotional turmoil of a small dance company, and all of Chip’s poignant firsts—the forging of friendships, being chosen for the important solo, his first ever love affair—with the intimacy and immediacy of a documentary. The result, FIVE DANCES, is Brown’s most dynamic film.’ [Read more…]

Jennifer Lopez To Receive Human Rights Campaign Ally For Equality Award

September 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennifer-lopezEarlier this year, Whoopi Goldberg was honoured with the Human Rights Campaign Ally For Equality Award. Now the next recipient has been named. HRC has announced that Jennifer Lopez will receive the gong at their National Dinner on 5 October in Washington DC.

“Jennifer Lopez embodies the spirit of an ally to the LGBT community and we are thrilled to present her the Ally for Equality at our National Dinner in October,” said HRC president Chad Griffin. “We recognize Jennifer for her talent, style, compassion, philanthropy and generosity, but foremost for her public commitment to LGBT equality.”

The Ally for Equality award is given to allies outside the LGBT community who stand up on behalf of equality and try to improve the lives of gay people. J-Lo has been a very vocal supporter of the LGBT community, including raising money for HIV and AIDS research, as well as for anti-bullying and anti-violence services.

She’s also recently been an executive producer on The Fosters, a TV series about a lesbian couple who take in children who are in need of a home.

“Even facing pressure from anti-LGBT groups, Jennifer stands her ground as a strident equality supporter,” Griffin said. “Throughout her career, Jennifer Lopez has always stood for fairness, justice and equality, and that’s what being an ally is all about.”
