The Butler Tops The US Box Office, With Kick-Ass 2 Faltering

August 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

butler-poster1Going into the weekend, most box office watchers were predicting that Kick-Ass 2 would win the weekend, with Lee Daniels’ The Butler coming second. In the end The Butler did better than expected and took the top spot, with Kick-Ass 2 faltering and only managing fourth place on the chart.

The Butler took $25 million to take the top spot, about on par with The Help, which opened August 2011. It did a lot better than expected, with Hollywood once more underestimating the African American audience, who turned out in large numbers to support the civil rights themed movie. With good word of mouth building, some are saying it could end up taking $100 million.

Kick-Ass 2 ended up fourth with a comparatively dismal $13.5 million, about half what some had expected and six million below the first film’s opening weekend take. However the Kick-Ass only really became a hit on DVD, so the sequel will now have to hope it can do the same.

The only other new movie in the top 10 is Jobs, which took $6.7 million. It’s not a great start but about in line with expectations. It seems that mixed reviews didn’t help a movie that never managed to really sell why you should want to see a film about Steve Jobs.

At least it did better than Paranoia, as despite the presence of Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth, it only took $3.5 million for a 13th place finish. Many expect it to become the lowest grossing movie Ford’s ever starred in.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 16th-18th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $25.0 $25.0
2 We’re The Millers $17,7 $69.5

4 Kick-Ass 2 $13.5 $13.5

6 Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters $8.3 $38.9
7 Jobs $6.7 $6.7

A.C.O.D. Trailer – Adam Scott tries to deal with his parents’ divorce all over again

August 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a sense that Hollywood thinks it’s only a matter of time until Parks and Recreation star Adam Scott breaks it big in the movies, and with some great notices from festival screenings, perhaps A.C.O.D. is the film to do it.

He plays Carter, a seemingly well-adjusted Adult Child of Divorce (the A.C.O.D. of the title). Having survived the madness of his parents’ divorce, Carter now has a successful career and supportive girlfriend. But when his younger brother gets engaged, Carter is forced to reunite his bitterly divorced parents and their new spouses for the wedding, causing the chaos of his childhood to return, including his wacky therapist.

The great cast also includes Richard Jenkins, Catherine O’Hara, Amy Poehler, Clark Duke, Jessica Alba, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jane Lynch. It’ll be out later this year.

Shailene Woodley & Ansel Elgort Get Educated In A New Divergent Image

August 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

divergent-pic8
Summit is hoping that Divergent will be its young adult replacement for the Twilight franchise, and as they did with their earlier hit, they’re started the promotion early in the hope of getting fans of the novels excited. We’ve already had a few pics from the film, and now another one has shown up – although I’m hoping the whole movie isn’t quite as beige as this.

Neil Burger is directing the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling novel, which takes place in a dystopian future made up of five factions that are based on different personality types. As they come of age, everyone must join the faction they fit into, but certain people are ‘divergents’, showing traits from more than one group. Tris (Shailene Woodley) uncovers that these people are seen as dangerous and the government wants to get rid of them.

The other person in the pic is Ansel Elgort, who plays Tris brother, Caleb Prior. They both become part of the both part of the Abnegation faction, and this appears to be part of their selection of training.

The likes of Theo James, Kate Winslet, Miles Teller, Ashley Judd and Maggie Q co-star. It’ll be out next March.

Jeremy Irvine & Addison Timlin Join The Supernatural Fantasy Fallen

Jeremy Irvine in Now Is Good

Jeremy Irvine in Now Is Good

Way back in September 2010 Liam Hemsworth was circling Fallen, but he moved on due to the fact the film was stuck in development (and was also passed around Hollywood, as it was originally being developed by Disney). However now it’s moving forward again with Deadline reporting that Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Addison Timlin (Stand Up Guys) have joined the cast.

The film is based on Lauren Kate’s young adult supernatural fantasy novel about an alienated teen girl, Luce Price (Timlin), who is drawn to the mysterious and aloof Daniel Grigori (Irvine) from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch their every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce, she can’t let go and has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret. As secrets unfurl, it becomes clear Daniel may not be what he appears, and there could be a reason he seems so familiar.

Scott Hicks (The Lucky One) is directing from a screenplay co-written by author Lauren Kate, Nichole Millard and Kathryn Price. It isn’t clear when it will shoot.

Bradley Cooper May Play Lance Armstrong In Red Blooded American

August 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shortly after it was revealed in March that Paramount and J.J. Abrams were planning a biopic of Lance Armstrong, rumours suggested the want Bradley Cooper to star, which he denied. Now it seems he may play the disgraced cyclist after all, although in a different movie, as Deadline reports that he’s signed up to produce and probably star in Red Blooded American for Warner and director Jay Roach.

Roach has been attached since March, working from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (World War Z). Bradley Cooper will play one of the two main roles, either Lance Armstrong or Tyler Hamilton, the latter being Lance’s cycling teammate who was the one who first revealed that the seven-time Tour de France winner was using performance-enhancing drugs. After years of speculation and allegations, Armstrong finally came clean and admitted he was doping in a January interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The project is being put on the fast track as it’s jockeying against both Abrams’ Cycle of Lies, and a recently announced film from director Stephen Frears, which has Ben Foster attached to star. There’s no news on when Red Blooded American will shoot.

Seth MacFarlane Suggests Ted 2 Is Coming Spring 2015

August 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ted-Movie-Poster-SXSWAfter the massive success of Ted, Universal was quick to sign Seth MacFarlane to make a sequel. However with his TV shows to run and a new live action film, A Million Ways To Die In The West, in post-production, it hasn’t been clear when he’d return to talking teddy bears.

Now MacFarlane has revealed on his Twitter page this week that he is aiming to release the comedy sequel Ted 2 in the spring of 2015. He said, ‘RT @JohnnyMctardo: @SethMacFarlane when is Ted 2? // We’re aiming for a 2015 Passover release date.’

Passover begins on Friday, April 3 in the 2015, which is also Easter weekend. It also means it’ll arrive ahead of what’s lining up to be a ridiculously massive and competitive summer movie seasons, with films such as Star Wars: Episode VII, Man of Steel 2 (with Batman), Jurassic Park IV and The Avengers: Age of Ultron slated for release that year.

Seth MacFarlane is expected to return as writer-director and the voice of Ted, along with Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett. Seth MacFarlane co-wrote the original Ted screenplay with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, who are also expected to return the sequel.

Oblivion Helmer Joseph Kosinski Takes On The Twilight Zone

August 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joseph-kosinskiFor some time there’s been talk of a new film based on The Twilight Zone, but it seems like they’ve had difficulty figuring out how it would work, as while it’s a famous name, Rod Serling TV show’s anthology structure means there’s no real template to follow.

However now the idea is picking up steam, with THR reporting that Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) is in talks to direct The Twilight Zone for Warner Bros. Matt Reeves had been attached to helm back in 2011, but but he is no longer involved.

Anthony Peckham wrote the original draft of the script, but the project is now being redeveloped for Kosinski. It’s thought Peckham’s script told a single tale, rather than following the multi-story approach of the TV show and 1980s-era movie. It’s unclear if this will change now Kosinski is onboard.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran are producing through their Appian Way production company, alongside Michael Ireland. It’s no clear when it might shoot.

Scenes From A Gay Marriage Sequel Needs Your Help

August 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared Allman from Scenes From A Gay Marriage

Jared Allman & Matt Riddlehoover in Scenes From A Gay Marriage

Back in June, a sequel to Matt Riddlehoover’s Scenes From A Gay Marriage was announced. Now the movie, More Scenes From A Gay Marriage, is looking for funding to find the final cash needed to get the film made. It’s currently running a campaign on Indiegogo and has already raised a good chunk of the $5,000 it needs, but it’s still got some cash to raise.

The movie ‘picks up two years after the original left off. A gay-themed film (starring Charlie David and Rett Terrell) has been made about how Darren (Matt Riddlehoover) and Joe (Jared Allman) met and fell in love. As a result of the film’s success, Darren and Joe begin to question whether their domestic partnership is as exciting or romantic as what led up to it…’

Thashana McQuiston will be reprise her role as Darren’s sharp-tongued gal pal Luce, while Rodiney Santiago will also co-star as a sexy male masseur.

You can take a look at what we thought of Scenes From A Gay Marriage here, which should whet your apettite to ensure a follow-up gets made. Head over to Indiegogo for more info, including what goodies are on offer to those who donate.

C.O.G. Trailer – David Sedaris’ tale comes to the silver screen with Jonathan Groff starring

August 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

C.O.G. debuted at Sundance and more recently is was the opening movie at LA’s gay film festival, Outfest, but it’s only now that it’s bearing up for a September US release.

It’s the first tale by cult queer author David Sedaris’ to be turned into a movie (it’s based on an autobiographical short published in the 1998 collection Naked), and stars Jonathan Groff as a young man who plans a summer in the Northwest with his friend Jennifer (Troian Avery Bellisario). The plot thickens when Jennifer suddenly ditches him, causing him to go on a series of strange adventures. Corey Stoll, Dale Dickey, Denis O’Hare and Dean Stockwell co-star.

Vampire Academy Teaser Trailer – Bringing together the makers of Mean Girls & Heathers

August 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the end of Twilight, are young adults still interested in bloodsuckers? Vampire Academy is hoping so. Now the first trailer has arrived, which suggest that despite the dreadful name it might not be too bad.

Indeed you’d hope for something decent from Mean Girls helmer Mark Waters and Heathers writer Daniel Waters, who’ve adapted Richelle Mead‘s popular series of books for the big screen.

The film tells the tale of Rose Hathaway, a 17-year-old girl who has a mental and spiritual bond with her vampire best friend Lissa. The two girls attend a special school for Vampires who struggle to retain some humanity while other Vampires become more feral. Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures) and the Australian Lucy Fry playing Rose and Lissa, with Russian star Danila Kozlovski as Dimitri.

The film’s due out early next year. [Read more…]
