Adam Sandler Breaks The Razzie Record With 10 ‘Awards’

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s safe to say that this year’s Razzie voters are not Adam Sandler fans. The actor already broke Eddie Murphy’s record for having the most nominations in a year, and now he’s gone one better (worse?) by sweeping the board and receiving a record 10 gongs for filmic awfulness.

Admittedly not every single award went to him personally, but it does mean Jack & Jill, which Sandler both produced and starred in, is the first film in the 32-year history of the Razzies to sweep all 10 dishonourable categories. Sandler won for both Worst Actor and Worst Actress, an impressive feat in itself, while co-stars Al Pacino and David Spade also picked up gongs in the worst supporting actor and actress categories.

It’s actually a pretty impressive achievement and Sandler ought to be oddly proud, while feeling extremely ashamed at the same time!

While the Razzies are normally given out the day before the Oscars, this year it was changed to nominations were announced as Oscar time, with the winners announced on April Fools Day. Voting was also expanded from just Golden Raspberry members to the users of the Rotten Tomatoes websites, so it really was a popular vote deciding Sandler’s film was the absolute worst!

Chris Columbus Directing Home Front

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After the first two Harry Potters, Chris Columbus was poised to be the biggest hotshot director around, but Rent, I Love You beth Cooper and Percy Jackson rather ruined that. Indeed his biggest recent success was producing The Help.

He seems to have learned from that, as he’s now taking another bestselling book that touches on real-life themes and turning it into movie. Deadline reports he’s set to direct Home Front, based on Kristin Hannah’s book. While nearly all military stories are about men, this one’s about a woman who juggles being a wife and mother with a job as a National Guard Blackhawk helicopter pilot. She’s then called up to Iraq, which inevitably causes all sorts of issues to arise.

Columbus says, “I was blown away by this book, I simply could not put it down. It told the story about the cost of war from a completely unique perspective: what happens when a wife and mother is called into action and how her family adjusts to life without her, and to a changed life upon her return. Home Front not only portrays the great sacrifices our military makes for us, but depicts so powerfully the hidden sacrifices their families make as well.”

Ashton Kutcher To Play Steve Jobs

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since Steve Jobs passed away there has been interest in Hollywood in making a biopic about the founder of Apple. Several projects have been put into development, but now one has pulled ahead of the pack with the news, via Variety, that Ashton Kutcher has been cast in the lead role.

The film will be directed by Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) from a script written by Matt Whiteley, following Jobs from wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple, where he became one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of our time. It’s not certain how much of Jobs’ life the movie will cover, and whether it will follow through to his illness and Apple’s more recent rise to being one of the biggest companies on the planet.

It’s a more dramatic role than we’re used to from Kutcher, and may allow him to show his got more acting chops than mast suspect. He also looks surprisingly like Jobs in his younger days.

The film will begin to shoot in May, when Kutcher is on his Two and a Half Men hiatus.

Mia Wasikowska Takes On Madame Bovary

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mia Wasikowska has the sort of fresh face and innocence that make her perfect for period roles, whether it’s Alice going down the rabbit hole or the governess Jane Eyre. The actress doesn’t seem too worried about being typecast in corsetted part, as Variety reports that she’s signed up for the title role in director Sophie Barthes’ take on Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary.

The script apparently puts a fresh spin on the tale of a beautiful small-town doctor’s wife, Emma Bovary, who attempts to climb the social ladder by engaging in extra-marital affairs. The project will emphasise the more youthful themes found in the book, which haven’t been fully explored in past adaptation.

Paul Giamatti is also set to appear as Monsieur Homais, a friend of the doctor who threatens to expose Emma’s secrets. The film is set to shoot this autumn.

Amanda Peet Joins Identity Thief

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While actress Amanda Peet had success on TV with Jack & Jill and Studio 60, she’s been an irregular presence on movie screens, although she did get decent roles in the likes of The Whole Nine Yards, 2012 and Gulliver’s Travels. Now Variety reports that she has joined the cast of director Seth Gordon’s Identity Thief.

Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy signed on to star in the film last August, which centres on a man (Bateman) whose life is turned upside down when he learns a woman (McCarthy) has stolen his identity. The film was originally written for two male leads, but after McCarthy showed interest it was reworked. It isn’t known what character Amanda Peet will portray.

Shooting is scheduled to begin sometime in April, after Melissa McCarthy wraps Mike & Molly Season 2.

Hunger Games Tops The US Box Office Again

April 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While it dropped nearly 60% from its record-breaking opening, The Hunger Games easily topped the US box office for a second weekend with $61.1 million, marking the seventh highest second-weekend ever.

It handily beat Wrath Of The Titans, which came in second with $34.2 million. That probably won’t bring massive amounts of cheer to Warner Bros. as it’s only half what the film of the Greek fantasy films took on its opening, although that film came out at the heights of excitement over 3D films.

Tarsem’s family fantasy take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror, came in third with $19 million. That’s considering a slight underperformance, as while it seems to have attracted young girls, teens and older women are still more interested in The Hunger Games. The hope is that with Easter coming this week, it will be able to continue making cash over the next couple of weeks.

Also making its first appearance in the top 10 was Salmon Fishing Of The Yemen, which added 350 screens and went from 16 to number 7 on the chart, with $1.2 million.

Take a look below for the US top 10 for March 30th to April 1st.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games $61.1 $251.0
2 Wrath Of The Titans $32.2 $32.2
3 Mirror Mirror $19.0 $19.0
4 21 Jump Street $15.0 $93.1
5 Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax $8.0 $189.6
6 John Carter $2.0 $66.2
7 Salmon Fishing In The Yemen $1.2 $3.1
8 Act Of Valor $1.0 $67.7
9 A Thousand Words $0.9 $16.5

March 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alex Kurtzman made his name co-writing and producing the likes of the Transformers movies, Star Trek and Cowboys & Aliens, but for his directorial he’s going to something a tad smaller and more personal, but still with a high-powered cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Wilde and Elizabeth Banks. Inspired by true events, Chris Pine plays Sam, a twenty-something, fast-talking salesman, whose latest deal collapses on the day he learns that his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes, Sam is called home, where he must put his father’s estate in order and reconnect with his estranged family. House At The End Of The Street Trailer

March 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost as if Jennifer Lawrence & Elizabeth Shue have never watched a thriller – you don’t go and live in a house near where murders took place years before, as it’s just a bad idea. However that’s just what they do in House At The End Of The Street, when newly divorced Sarah (Oscar-nominee Elisabeth Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence) find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town, right next door to a place where a daughter killed her parents in their beds, and disappeared – leaving only a brother, Ryan (Max Thieriot), as the sole survivor. Against Sarah’s wishes, Elissa begins a relationship with the reclusive Ryan – and the closer they get, the deeper they’re all pulled into a mystery more dangerous than they ever imagined. The film should hit cinemas this autumn.

March 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a lot of people waiting for the first footage from Man Of Steel to try and give a hint at what feel the movie is going for. With Chris Nolan producing, will it have the grit of Dark Knight or will Zack Snyder’s comic book action fireworks trump that?

Colin Firth Is Untouchable For Director Paul Feig

March 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It appears Bridesmaids director Paul Feig wants to head in a slightly different direction, with a movie that has space for some humour but also has the potential for plenty of Oscar-bait emotion. Variety reports he’s attached to write and direct Untouchable, The Weinstein Company’s planned remake of Eric Toledano and Oliver Nakache’s French hit The Intouchables, with Colin Firth attached to star.

Based on a true story, as recounted in Philippe Pozzo di Borgo’s heartwarming memoir Le Second Souffle, Untouchable is about an affluent aristocrat whose adventurous life changes dramatically following a crippling paragliding accident. Now quadriplegic and deeply depressed, he unleashes his frustration upon a string of caretakers until he meets one – a fiery Algerian immigrant – who refuses to suffer such abuse. Before long, these two stubborn and lonely men become unlikely friends.

Firth is in early talks to play the crippled man, so it’s not quite a done deal yet. It’s not clear when the movie will shoot,
