Tron: Legacy Writers Tease Sequel Details

March 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Not much has been heard about Tron 3 recently (and with the financial disaster that is John Carter hanging over Disney, they may decide against taking a punt on the movie at all), but it appears the film is still in the works, as Tron: Legacy screenwriters Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have been talking about the next installment at WonderCon.

When asked whether Kevin Flynn and Tron will return in the Untitled Tron Legacy Sequel – which if you’ve seen Legacy wouldn’t initially seem likely – io9 reports Horowitz and Kitsis cryptically said, “I would say the definition of life and death in the digital realm… will be explored in the sequel!”

David DiGilio is writing the Tron: Legacy sequel, but Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis are very involved and set co-produce the movie (they stepped aside on writing the screenplay due to their production schedule on the TV series Once Upon a Time, which they co-created).

As to whether Tron 3 will actually get made, Kitsis says, “David DiGilio is writing it. Joe (Kosinski) is right now shooting Horizons but we’ve had a lot of meetings and conversations and we’ve seen the first draft of the Tron sequel. Sometimes movies don’t happen as quickly as you want. Our hope is to get something going sooner [rather than later].”

Seth Rogen Set For Buddy Cop Comedy

March 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I have a feeling that following the success of 21 Jump Street, a huge amount of buddy cop comedies are going to go into development. Jonah Hill’s old cohort Seth Rogen is already part of the charge, as Variety reports that he’s signed up to star alongside comedian Kevin Hart in a new cop comedy.

Not much is known about the plot, which is based on a pitch by writer Rodney Rothman that Paramount recently picked up. It also seems it’s Rothman who got the actors on-board, as he worked with Seth Rogen on Judd Apatow’s college comedy series Undeclared, and is one of the producers on The Five-Year Engagement, which features Hart.

So how long is it going to take for us all to get sick of buddy cop comedies this time around?

Chronicle’s Josh Trank Directing The Red Star

March 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the success of Chronicle, Josh Trank became a hugely in-demand young man. He’s already attached to Sony’s planned Venom movie, there was talk he may take on The Fantastic Four, and now Deadline reports that he’s got another comic book project in the work.

He’s signed up for The Red Star, based on Christian Gossett’s award-winning comic that imagines an alternate USSR where advanced technology lives side-by-side with magic. While the story sprawls over various subjects, the main thrust is a soldier fighting to kill a fascist ruler. It would certainly be an ambitious movie, and it’s be a relatively brave move to give it the greenlight, but Trank’s now going to work to make that happen.

It’ll also be interesting to see what Trank can do when he’s got a bit of money to play with.

Disney Set To Lose $200 Million On John Carter

March 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not often that a studio will come out and say how much money they’re expecting to lose on a particular movie, but it seems Disney knows their losses on John Carter are going to be so big they need to tell investors in the hope of warding off future anger. As a result, the company has released a statement that essentially tells shareholders the film has single-handedly shoved the studio into the red for the next few months.

The statement reads: ‘In light of the theatrical performance of John Carter ($184 million global box office), we expect the film to generate an operating loss of approximately $200 million during our second fiscal quarter ending March 31. As a result, our current expectation is that the Studio segment will have an operating loss of between $80 and $120 million for the second quarter. As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the upcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave, which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the Studio and the rest of the company.’

It means there’s more riding on The Avengers than there was before, as Disney needs that to be a success. While big budget movies are actually a relatively good bet as they generally make more money than they cost to produce, as John Carter shows, when it goes wrong, it can be slightly catastrophic. It’s a particular shame with John Carter, as many dreadful mega-budget movie rake cash in, and this one has failed despite actually being quite good. (Source: Deadline)

Jake Gyllenhaal Is An Enemy

March 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Some people would already consider Jake Gyllenhaal an enemy, as the actor manages to bring out a strange and rather inexplicable sense of loathing in some. We like him here though! And now Jake’s in talks to star in an film called An Enemy for director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies).

Jake Gyllenhaal will play a downtrodden history teacher who discovers a man who looks exactly like him on a rented DVD. The teacher decides to seek out his double, and ends up turning both their lives upside down. Jake Gyllenhaal will portray both roles, which are described as “dark and edgy” despite the premise almost sounding like a comedy.

Denis Villeneuve will direct from a screenplay by Javier Gullón, which is adapted from the Jose Saramango novel, The Double. Shooting will start relatively soon, as Villeneuve wants to shoot An Enemy before he starts production on Prisoners, which stars Hugh Jackman.

Watch Five Minutes Of Snow White & the Huntsman

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Snow White & the Hunstman certainly looks like it’s gonna be a stylish flick. Now a new trailer has arrived for the film, and not only that, but there’s also a five-minute extended look at the fairy tale turned all action fantasy epic. and it’s looking ace. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.’ The film’s out June 1st in the UK.

The Amazing Spider-man Viral – Vigilante News Report

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new viral vid for The Amazing Spider-man has shown up online, in the form of a Daily Bugle news report, where they interview Capt. George Stacey (Denis Leary) about whether Spidey is a vigilante menace or a hero. Stacey is not a fan, even if unbeknownst to him, his daughter (Emma Stone) is having a bit of a thing with Spider-man alter-ego, Peter Parker. The movie’s out July 4th.

Extended Prometheus UK Trailer

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the weekend a superb new trailer for Prometheus debuted, and while it’s difficult not to feel Fox is slightly going for overkill on its marketing for the movie, they’ve also released a slightly extended UK version of the trailer featuring quite a lot of different footage. It all looks great, and if nothing else it proves that visually nobody does sci-fi like Ridley Scott. The film sees people heading off into the stars looking for the origins of mankind that have been hinted at in civilisations across the ages, but getting more than they bargained for. The sort-of Alien prequel is out June 1st.

J. Blakeson Directing Alan Turing Biopic The Imitation Game

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A biopic of Alan Turing is long overdue, but has probably been a long time coming as the film world was scared off by his sexuality and the rather tragic end to his tale. However a few months ago Warner Bros. bought the spect script The Imitiation Game, which is about Turing, and at the time Leo Dicaprio was said to have the inside track on the main role.

Now Variety reports that J. Blakeson has come onboard to direct The Imitation Game, although there’s no word on whether DiCaprio is still involved. Blakeson wrote the screenplay for The Descent Part 2, but really made waves writing and directing The Disappearance Of Alice Creed.

Graham Moore’s script is about British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist Alan Turing. ‘Informed’ by Andrew Hodges’ biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma, the film will look at the shy man who is now seen by many as the father of modern computing. His work led to the creation of some of the first computers, which were used to help the Allies decode German communications during WWII. However due to the sensitive nature of his work, his contribution wasn’t officially recognised for many years.

Indeed, rather than being praised by his country, he was persecuted for being gay, which led to depression, the destruction of his career and him eventually killing himself by eating a cyanide-laced apple. In 2009 PM Gordon Brown made an official apology for the way he was treated, although his convictions for being gay still stand.

Hopefully there’ll be news soon on whether Leo will play Turing, or if the role has gone to someone else.

21 Jump Street Sequel Already In The Works

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonah Hill must be feeling pretty pleased with himself today. It was his idea to turn the 80s TV show 21 Jump Street into a modern buddy cop comedy, which has turned out to be a great success.

Even before the weekend numbers were in, Sony seemed confident they had a hit, as Variety reports they’re already working on a sequel, with Hill once more producing and working on the story, and Michael Bacall writing the screenplay. Bacall worked on the first 21 Jump Street film, as well as Project X and Scott Pilgrim.

There’s no info on what the follow-up may be about, or when we might see it, although with the box office numbers for 21 Jump Street already racking up, Sony is likely to want to get it in cinemas as soon as possible!

At the moment it’s very early days, so it’s not known whether directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return, and it isn’t thought Channing Tatum is currently signed for sequel, so they’ll need to bring him onboard too.
