Forest Whitaker Likely to Be The Butler In Lee Daniels’ Film

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been various people rumoured for Lee Daniels’ planned movie The Butler, but one role that remained empty until now was the one the film was named after – The Butler himself. However Variety reports that Forest Whitaker is in early talks for the role.

The film follows Eugene Allen, a African-American who worked in the White House, serving eight presidents from 1952 to 1986. He started at the White House as a “pantry man” in the early 50s, at a time when blacks weren’t allowed to use public restrooms in his native Virginia. He rose through the ranks and had a unique front-row seat on everything from the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

If he signs on, Whitaker will play Eugene, while David Oyelowo is negotiating to play his son. Oprah Winfrey is rumored to be interested in playing his wife, while other Hollywood vets such as Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson and Mila Kunis are eyeing the roles of other real-life figures.

Hopefully this one will come together, as Daniels has had problems getting a follow-up to Precious off the ground, as despite attracting top talent, the money men haven’t wanted to pony up the cash. Fingers crossed that won’t be an issue here.

Woody Allen Books An Acting Role In Fading Gigolo

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Woody Allen is still churning out a movie a year, and as he writes, direct and often stars in those films, he doesn’t have a huge amount of time for anything else. However, he’s now booked a rare acting roles in a film that he isn’t set to direct, with Variety reporting that he’s agreed to star in John Turturro’s Fading Gigolo.

Of course Turturro has starred in several Allen movies, but it’s nevertheless a bit of a coup to get Woody to return the favour. The film will also star Sofia Vergara and Sharon Stone and is about two men who are growing old and need some cash, so they become gigolos to make some cash. Allen begins to pimp out Turturro, but things go wrong when the folks in the Hasidic Jewish community where they live begin to suspect what’s going on and Turturro falls for a Jewish widow.

Stone will play a dermatologist who hires Tuturro, while Vergara will play a married woman who wishes to have a threesome with Stone and Turturro.

It’s Woody’s first acting gig since 2006’s Scoop, and the first movie he’s starred in that he hasn’t directed since 2000’s Picking Up The Pieces.

Chronicle’s Josh Trank May Take On Venom

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Even before Venom popped up in Spider-man 3, there’s been talk of giving the character his own movie, but it’s only in the last year or so Sony’s really been pushing to make it a reality (they flirted with a Gary Ross directed version just after Spider-man 3, but that fell apart). Now the LA Times says Chronicle director Josh Trank is in negotiations to direct Venom.

While early talk about the Venom movie back in 2008 had Topher Grace returning to the role, he’s long gone from the Venom movie. However what isn’t known is whether Sony is seeing this is a completely separate entity, or if it will fit into the rebooted world it’s creating with The Amazing Spider-man.

Sony is currently looking for a new screenwriter to take over from the likes of Jacob Aaron Estes and the Zombieland team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who worked on previous drafts of the screenplay.

Project X Sequel Already In The Works

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Project X outperforming expectations and scoring a $20 million opening in the US, it’s not surprising that a sequel is moving forward, especially as the film didn’t cost a huge amount to make. THR reports that Warner Bros. has made its move, hiring Michael Bacall to write a treatment for a follow-up.

Project X is about three social outcasts (Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown), who decide to throw a party they hope will make them popular with the cool crowd at their high school. However, things go wildly out of control.

It isn’t known if Warner Bros. has deals in place with the actors to return for a sequel. Oliver Cooper and Jonathan Daniel Brown made their feature debuts in Project X, and Thomas Mann had only appeared in It’s Kind of a Funny Story before Project X. It’s not certain the sequel will ever get made, as it depends on how much producers Todd Phillips and Joel Silver respond to Michael Bacall’s treatment, as they have sequel approval.

Leslie Mann Joins Sofia Copolla’s The Bling Ring

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With a shoot planned for this spring, Sofia Copolla is staring to fill the cast of her next movie, The Bling Ring. A few days ago Emma Watson and American Horror Story’s Taissa Farmiga signed on, and now THR reports Leslie Mann and Israel Broussard (Flipped) have joined the cast too.

The drama is based on the true story of six teenagers, known as The Bling Ring, who broke into the homes of Hollywood celebrities, making off with over $3 million in stolen goods from October 2008 to August 2009. Leslie Mann will play the mother of two girls in The Bling Ring, while Israel Broussard portrays the male lead.

Sofia Coppola is directing The Bling Ring from her own screenplay. The director has also cast three newcomers, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister and Georgia Rock, who will make their feature debuts as members of The Bling Ring.

Warner Bros. Greenlights Journey 3, With Brad Peyton Directing

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was one of those movies that people in film circles completely ignored (or perhaps just wondered why it had been made), while average filmgoers lapped it up and turned it into a surprise hit – it’s grossed $270 million so far – with the movie substantially outgrossing its predecessor, Journey To The Center Of The Earth.

Now Warner has moved fast to give the greenlight to a third film in the franchise, with THR reporting they’re bringing back director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn for Journey 3.

No story details are known, but the studio is already aiming for a 2014 release for the 3D family film. No deals have been signed yet for any returning cast members, and it’s not certain if Josh Hutcherson’s contract included sequel clauses.

Here’s what director Brad Peyton had to say about expanding this Jules Verne based franchise, “I grew up a fan of Verne, so I know a lot about the mythologies. Mysterious Island was one of eight or nine really seminal works. I know we’ve just scratched the surface of what we can do. This one’s going to be a lot bigger. We’re going to go to a completely different world. It’s just going to be a bigger experience and we’re going to grow the mythology. Journey 2 was about rebooting a franchise. Now it’s about making the seminal work in the franchise.”
