The Sky Is Everywhere For Selena Gomez

January 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

She may only be 19, but Selena Gomes is getting proactive about her career and adding a producer credit to her resumé. According to Deadline, her production company, July Moon, has optioned Jandy Nelson’s novel The Sky Is Everywhere, with the former Disney Channel star planning to both produce and star in a movie adaptation.

She will play 17-year old Lennie Walker, a bookworm and band geek who plays clarinet and lives in the shadow of her extroverted older sister, Bailey. When Bailey dies suddenly, her younger sibling is left to take centre stage and balance not one boy but two. One is his sister’s grieving boyfriend, the other a musically inclined Parisian. Her whole world threatens to collapse all over again as she tries to juggle both guys.

It’s early days on the adaptation yet, so there’s no info on when it might shoot.

Twilight’s Nikki Reed Says Snap In New Psychological Thriller

January 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Twilight has given quite a lot of young actors and actresses a moment to shine, but how many of them will manage to turn that into lasting success is difficult to gauge. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Anna Kendrick seem to be doing okay, and now Nikki Reed is hoping to further her post-Twilight career with a psychological thriller called Snap.

According to Deadline, she’ll star alongside Jake Hoffman in the movie, which is a psychological thriller set in the world of underground dubstep. Jake Hoffman (Barney’s Version) will play a brilliant but painfully introverted musician who develops a crush on a young social worker, played by Reed. While she is initially drawn in by Jim’s musical genius, his inner demons spiral out of control when the romance fizzles, with shocking and tragic results.

Victor Teran and Youssef Delara will direct the movie, with a shoot scheduled for March.

January 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bong Joon-Ho’s English-language debut is getting more and more interesting with each cast announcement. Chris Evans is taking the lead role, with Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell joining him soon after. Now they have some illustrious company in the form of John Hurt, according to The Telegraph.

Hurt mentioned the role in an interview, saying “All the film crew refer to him, with great reverence, as ‘Director Bong’. I love the fact that I am working for Director Bong.” It isn’t known what role Hurt will play.

The film is set in a world of ice and snow, and follows a group of people who get stuck on a train and can’t find a way to co-exist harmoniously. Bong Joon-ho, who’s best known for his Korean movies The Mother and The Host, will direct from his own screenplay, with Chan-wook Park (Oldboy) producing.

Darling Companion Trailer

January 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kevin Kline and Diane Keaton really, really like their dog in Darling Companion, as it would appear their characters’ entire marriage depends on them finding the mutt after it goes missing. Keaton is convinced her hubby, played by Kline, loves the dog more than her and he’s got to prove otherwise. Lawrence Kasdan’s film also stars Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Sam Shepard and Elisabeth Moss.

Daniel Radcliffe Defends Casting As Gay Poet Allen Ginsberg

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman In Black

A few weeks ago it was revealed that Daniel Radcliffe was set to play gay poet Allen Ginsberg in a movie called Kill Your Darlings. The film about a murder case that united three of the most important figures of the beat era – Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S Burroughs – before any of them made their name.

Ginsberg, famed for his poem Howl, is best known from images of him when he was in his 30s. At that point he had a huge bushy beard and receding hairline, leading to accusations that Radcliffe is the wrong person to play him. This is despite the fact the rather dashing and beardless James Franco played him only a couple of years ago in Howl.

Now Radcliffe has been defending his casting, telling the BBC, “Any criticism of me not looking right for the part – well, James Franco is way too good-looking to play Allen Ginsberg.”

Radcliffe added, “This is a 19-year old Ginsberg. I remember somebody saying to me, ‘Are you going to grow a beard?’ No, l’m not playing him at 40. That would be weird, they wouldn’t have cast me. He’s 19, clean shaven and has just got into Columbia University.”

Kill Your Darlings is about Columbia University student Lucien Carr, who was implicated in (and served time for) the murder of David Kammerer, who was found dead in Hudson River in 1944. The events surrounding the death are said to have had a massive impact on the beat circle – including Ginsberg, Kerouac and Burroughs – who all became involved in the case, with it tempering the idealism they had felt beforehand.

Shooting is due to begin in March. Radcliffe will next be seen in The Woman In Black, which opens in the UK on February 10th.

Jane Lynch Set To Be Given ‘Authentic Gay Life’ Honour

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jane Lynch may get a lot of praise for playing Sue Sylvester in TV’s Glee, but now she’s getting an honour of a different kind from the National Center for Lesbian Rights in the US, who are giving her its Vanguard Award.

One of seven awards NCLR are giving out this year, they decided to honour Lynch as, “The Vanguard Award honors an individual whose life and spirit exemplifies NCLR’s vision and values of equality and justice for all.

“This year’s award goes to famed actress Jane Lynch, of ‘Glee’ and ‘Julie & Julia’, who has lived an authentic life as an out lesbian while simultaneously achieving great success and visibility in television and film.

“Her authenticity and integrity are blazing a path not just for the artists who follow in her footsteps, but for young people everywhere who look up to her. She lives her life with openness to the unexpected, and by doing so met her soul-mate and became a parent long past the time she thought she ever would.”

Lynch married Lara Embry in 2012, but their marriage has been in jeopardy due to the uncertainty over gay marriage in California. It was briefly legal in the state, but was banned again after voters passed Prop 8. Whether that ban is legal has been going through the courts ever since.

She also recently announced she’d be starring alongside George Clooney in a one-night-only reading of Dustin Lance Black’s play about the court case surrounding Prop 8.

Olivia Newton-John Supports Aussie Marriage Equality

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week the organisation Australian Marriage Equality announced that Hugh Jackman had signed up to its pro-gay-marriage declaration, and promised they’d be announcing more celebrity support this week.

Well, they’ve done just that, with Grease star Olivia Newton-John pledging her support and saying, “With respect to marriage equality I believe that no one has the right to judge and deny couples who love each other the ability to make a marriage commitment. Love is love.”

The news comes ahead of a sold out dinner this Wednesday in support of gay marriage, hosted by director Stephan Elliot (Priscilla Queen Of The Desert).

Alex Greenwich, Australian Marriage Equality’s National Convener said, “Australians admire celebrities like Olivia Newton-John and Hugh Jackman because they reflect our values of tolerance and a fair go for all, values which they are reminding us apply just as much to same-sex couples as to other Australians.”

A fresh attempt to push marriage equality into law in Australia is expected to be made later this year, with the hope being that the support of celebrity will help build momentum.

Jeff Who Lives At Home Trailer

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mark and Jay Duplass have earned plenty of indie cred for the likes of The Puffy Chair and Cyrus, and now they’re coming back with Jeff Who Lives At Home, which stars Jason Segel, Ed Helms and Susan Sarandon. Dispatched from his basement room on an errand for his mother, 30-something slacker Jeff (Segel) might discover his destiny (finally) when he spends the day with his brother (Helms) as he tracks his possibly adulterous wife. Project X Trailer – Partying gets rather intense

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cinema has a long tradition of films about parties getting out of hand, but Project X looks like it’s going to take things up a notch. Produced by Hangover helmer Todd Phillips and shot in a pseudo-documentary style, the film follows three seemingly anonymous high school seniors as they attempt to finally make a name for themselves. Their idea is innocent enough: throw a party that no one will forget… but nothing could prepare them for this party. Word spreads quickly as dreams are ruined, records are blemished and legends are born. The film is due out in the UK on March 2nd.

Anna Kendrick & Bryan Cranston May Get A Job

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After the cult success of Roger Dodger and P.S., you wouldn’t have thought it would take eight years for director Dylan Kidd to plot a follow-up, but it’s only just now that he’s got around to putting together Get A Job, for which he’s currently busy casting.

While no one’s signed on the dotted line yet, Variety reports that offers are out to Anna Kendrick and Bryan Cranston for the movie, with Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jay Pharaoh and Roger Dodger star Jesse Eisenberg also circling (although the latter would only be onboard for a cameo role). It seems there’s a bit of a chicken and egg scenario going on, as while Get A Job could shoot as early as next month, CBS Films won’t greenlight the movie without a good cast, but the stars can’t fully sign on until the money’s in place. That should all get sorted though.

The film, based on a spec script by Kyle Pennekamp and Scott Turpel, follows a college graduate and his friends who have to lower their expectations about life as they enter the real world during a recession.
