Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Reynolds Team For Art Biopic Big Eyes

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon could be a good on-screen pairing. The duo have now signed to star together in Big Eyes for producer Tim Burton and writer/directors Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, according to THR.

The movie is based on the fascinating true story of artists Margaret Keane and Walter Keane, whose bizarre paintings featuring large eyed characters were beloved across the world in the 1960s. However, Margaret later claimed she was the true artist behind all the big-eyed paintings, and that the rather pompous and self-obsessed Walter (who spoke about himself in the third person and compared himself to Rembrandt and El Greco) stole all the credit for her work. It set off a long running dispute between the two which ended in court battles.

Here’s what Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski had to say about the casting, “We are ecstatic to have this dream cast for our dream project. Walter is a larger-than-life antihero – charming, funny, dangerous, and a little crazy. Ryan will knock it out of the park. As for Reese, she will be perfect as Margaret – soulful, decent, transforming from vulnerability to learning to fight for herself.”

Production is scheduled to begin sometime this spring.

Anton Yelchin Joins The Very Good Girls

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Way back in the dim and distant past of May 2011, Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen signed on to star in the drama Very Good Girls, from first time director Naomi Foner. The indie project now continues to slowly move forward, with Deadline reporting that Anton Yelchin has signed to co-star.

The screenplay, which was also written by Foner, is an updated version of the 1980 teen cult drama Little Darlings, and follows lifelong best friends who decide to spend their first summer out of high school trying to lose their virginity. They both end up falling for the same boy, who’ll be played by Anton Yelchin, which causes unforeseen problems in their own relationship.

Foner says, “The film deals with female sexuality and friendship in a way we haven’t seen before. These girls will be stunning young women in a couple of years, but they’ve struggled through high school with only each other. Most of us have been there. This is the summer where they finally get to touch real life.”

Very Good Girls will shoot this June in and around New York City, meaning Yelchin will have plenty of time to finish his role as Chekov in Star Trek 2 before then.

Diane Kruger, Boyd Holbrook & Chandler Canterbury Join The Host

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits cinemas at the end of the year, it won’t be the end for adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s books on the big screen, as The Host is gearing up to shoot, with Andrew Niccol directing.

Saoirse Ronan, William Hurt, Max Iron and Jake Abel have already been cast, and they’ve now been joined by Diane Kruger, Boyd Holbrook and Chandler Canterbury, according to Variety.

The film is about parasitic alien creatures called Souls who can take over a human body. Saoirse Ronan stars as a young human soldier who is taken over by a Soul dubbed The Wanderer. While human personalities are normally subdued by their hosts, Ronan’s character puts up a fight, refusing to let go of her identity.

The Wanderer becomes obsessed with the soldier’s memories, and sets out to find her boyfriend and lost brother. Diane Kruger will portray another human with a soul inside called The Seeker, who tracks down The Wanderer. Chandler Canterbury will play Ronan’s younger brother, while Holbrook will be Jake Abel’s macho brother.

The film is due to start shooting at the end of the month, with a release already set for March 2013.

Director Jan De Bont Has Five Minutes To Live

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Speed and Twister, Jan De Bont became the toast of Hollywood, but with Speed 2, The Haunting and Tomb Raider 2, he almost as quickly got dumped on the scrap heap. He hasn’t made a film since Lara Croft’s last adventure, but now the Dutch filmmaker is planning a return, signing on to helm a remake of the 1961 crime thriller Five Minutes to Live.

According to Deadline, Raul Inglis is writing the screenplay, which follows two men who attempt to rob a bank by unconventional methods. One man holds the bank manager’s wife hostage, while the other tells the manager his wife only has five minutes to live unless he transfers money to their account. Musician Johnny Cash starred in the original Five Minutes to Live, which also featured a very young Ron Howard.

No production schedule was given for Five Minutes to Live, but it probably won’t be too far off as the plan is to start casting immediately.

Underworld Awakening Tops The US Box Office

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Despite a critical drubbing and worries about franchise fatigue, Underworld Awakening has fought through to top the US box office in its first weekend, taking a respectable $25.4 million. That’s a little ahead on Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, although that movie didn’t have Kate Beckinsale or a boost from premium price 3D ticket sales.

Red Tails also got off to a stronger start than many had expected, with the George Lucas produced movie taking $19.1 million. Although not amazing, many saw it as a very risky venture, with Lucas funding the entire project himself because no studio would touch a WWII movie with an all-black cast. Although the film’s still got a long way to go to make Lucas back his $70 million plus, it’s on the right track.

Doing less well was the expansion of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which went from a few screens to over 2,000, but only took $10.5 million. While that wouldn’t be too bad for most dramas, it makes it the least attended movie for either Tom Hanks or Sandra Bullock in 15 years. However with bad reviews and a marketing campaign that never seemed certain what the movie was, it’s perhaps not surprising the movie has faltered.

The only other new entry was Haywire, which took fifth spot with $9 million. That’s about in line with several other female oriented action movies, such as Hanna, but it’s not a great start. It doesn’t help that despite seeming to go down okay with the critics, audiences coming out of screenings don’t seem to like it much, and so word of mouth is likely to be lousy.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend on January 20th-22nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Underworld Awakening $25.4 $25.4
2 Red Tails $19.1 $19.1
3 Contraband $12.2 $46.1
4 Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close $10.5 $11.2
5 Haywire $9.0 $9.0
6 Beauty and the Beast $8.5 $33.3
7 Joyful Noise $6.0 $21.9
8 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol $5.5 $197.3
9 Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows $4.8 $178.6
10 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo $3.7 $94.7

Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga To Star In The Conjuring

January 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Conjuring isn’t a great title for a horror movie, as it makes it sound like people will be stalked by David Copperfield, but that’s the current name of a new flick that’s jumping on the ‘true life’ (but not actually true at all) horror band wagon. Now Variety reports that Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have signed on to star in the movie.

The movie is based on the allegedly true story of a Rhode Island family who claimed they, “lived among the dead,” with friendly and evil spirits residing in their farmhouse. It isn’t clear what roles Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will play, but it seems likely they will play the husband and wife.

The film will see Patrick Wilson reunite with Insidious (and Saw) helmer James Wan. It isn’t certain when production will begin on The Conjuring.

Julia Roberts Has The Normal Heart, About AIDS In The Early 80s

January 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Glee creator Ryan Murphy is a ridiculously busy man, as he’s also got American Horror Story on the go, found time to write and direct Eat Pray Love and for a while has been putting together a film adaptation of Larry Kramer’s Tony Award winning play. Mark Ruffalo’s been onboard the movie for a while, and he’s now been joined by Julia Roberts, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Bomer, and Jim Parsons (aka Sheldon from Big Bang Theory), according to THR.

The film is about the rise of AIDS in New York’s gay community in the early-to-mid 80s. The play first debuted Off-Broadway in 1985, and has enjoyed several revivals in Los Angeles and London. Ruffalo is taking on the lead role of Ned Weeks, one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’.

Julia Roberts will play Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Alec Baldwin is set to play Weeks’ brother, a lawyer struggling to come to terms with Ned’s sexuality. The incredibly handsome Matthew Bomer is playing Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist, while Jim Parsons will reprise his stage role as a gay activist who forms a health crisis group.

The Normal Heart is set to shoot later this year and is set to be one of the highest profile gay-themed movies around.

First Look At Vin Diesel In New Riddick Film

January 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After The Chronicles Of Riddick flopped, it seemed unlikely we’d ever see the character again (outside video games). However, while Vin Diesel and director David Twohy have had to ditch the grand-scale space operatics they’d initially envisioned for an entire Riddick trilogy following Chronicles, they are bringing the character back in a movie that’s said to be more in the vein of the film that first introduce us to the character, Pitch Black.

The film should have shot last year, but ran into funding issues, but now to prove it really is going to happen, Vin Diesel’s released the first image from the set, along with the brief message, ‘Grateful for the opportunity to make magic… Thank you. P.s. One from the set…’

Here’s the (unconfirmed) synopsis: ‘Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.’

Iris Prize LGBT Short Film Festival Opens For 2012 Entries

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although most of the attention goes to full length movies, a lot of the most interesting things happening in the world of gay movies is in the realm of short films (Peccadillo Pictures series of DVDs, Boys On Film, is testament to that – and well worth checking out if you can). Now the Iris Prize Festival, one of the biggest supporters of LGBT short films, has opened the doors for submissions for this year’s 6th annual awards and festival.

Based in Cardiff, The Iris Prize is the world’s largest gay and lesbian short film prize and is open to any short film which is by, for, about or of interest to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex audiences.

Prize founder, Berwyn Rowlands commented “The Iris Prize is the only LGBT short film prize in the world which allows the winner to make a new film. Iris is more than just a trophy that gathers dust or a certificate that yellows on the wall. Iris is what film makers need – funding, support and guidance.

“I’m very proud of our track record in supporting new talent. To date two Iris Productions have been completed, starting with the inaugural winner, US filmmaker Dee Rees and Colonial God’s and Germany’s Till Klienert, with his award winning short Boys Village. We are in post production with Eldar Rapaport from Israel with Little Man and look forward later in 2012 to work with Magnus Mork from Norway on the fourth Iris Production, which as yet is untitled.”

Dee Rees, who won the very first Iris Prize, is currently winning huge amounts of praise for her Sundance prize-winning feature-length debut, Pariah, about the difficult coming out of a black teenage girl.

As well as the main Iris Prize for Best Short, there are also awards for Best UK short and Iris Prize Best Feature Award. Selected films will be shown at the Iris Prize Festival, which takes place October 10th-14th, 2012.

Neil Patrick Harris Talks About Why His Relationship Works (It’s not all “happy family fantastic-ness”)

January 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

From the moment Neil Patrick Harris came out, people have been cooing about how cute he and his musical theatre star boyfriend David Burtka look together. However other than the odd comment, Neil hasn’t spoken about their relationship too much. Now the duo are gracing the front cover of the latest issue of Out magazine, the Love Issue, with Neil talking inside about how they met, became a couple, and are now raising two kids.

He says, “I initially fell for David harder than he fell for me. I was in love with him before he was comfortable saying it, and I think that speaks to our past experiences. I remember saying, ‘I think I love you,’ and he was like, ‘That’s really nice,’ which is not necessarily what you want to hear.”

Harris adds, “I don’t want to paint our relationship like we met and it’s been happy family fantastic-ness ever since. What defines a relationship is the work that’s involved to maintain it, and it’s constantly changing. Sometimes I’m deeply in love with David and head-over-heels, and sometimes I question whether it’s going to work out and is meant to be.”

He also talks about the importance of marriage to him, saying “David first proposed to me five years ago on the actual street corner where we met. We were on our way to an event at an Indian casino 45 minutes out of town in a limousine, and David wanted to stop for some reason that I didn’t quite get. I thought he wanted to get some booze or something. And then he got on one knee and proposed, and I was so freaked out by it that I said, ‘Yes,’ but I didn’t know what it meant. Then I got the ring and loved it, and a year later, on Valentine’s Day, I proposed to him in Santa Monica. That was four years ago.

“The callus on my right hand is long-formed—and not from masturbation. I’m dying to move over to the other hand. I’d also like to call him my husband. I’m not the biggest fan of the word “partner”: It either means that we run a business together or we’re cowboys. ‘Boyfriend’ seems fleeting, like maybe we met two weeks ago. I’ve been saying ‘better half’ for as long as I’ve been able to. I think it’s a little self-deprecating and clearly defines that we’re in a relationship, but it would be nice to say ‘my husband.'”

You can read more and see some more great photos of the couple over at Out.
