The Paperboy Poster – Zac Efron Goes Retro

December 29, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Despite the success of Precious, it was surprisingly tough for Lee Daniels to get a follow-up off the ground. However after several false starts he’s filmed The Paperboy, which features a pretty good cast including Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman and John Cusack.

Now TheFilmStage has debuted the first US poster for the movie, which takes things retro for the upcoming movie. The film is about a directionless young man (Efron) who helps his reporter brother (McConaughey) investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row, and in the process, falls for the woman whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.

Robin Williams Claims He Has A Gay Dog

December 28, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Critically acclaimed Hollywood actor Robin Williams has said he is the proud owner of a gay dog.

The 60-year-old star, who currently appears in Happy Feet 2, lives on the outskirts of San Francisco with his wife and their pets.

In a recent interview with Contact Music he said: “I’ve done the ranch thing, now I’m doing the water thing where I go kayaking and paddleboarding and take to the woods for hours on my bike. It’s my thinking time and very therapeutic.

“I also have a gay rescue pug called Leonard, who I take for walks because I am very secure in my sexuality. He has a boyfriend and they are planning to adopt a Siamese kitten together. We’re very modern.”

Silence Of The Lambs Added To US National Film Registry

December 28, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Every year the US Library of Congress picks 25 films to join its National Film Registry, which it believes are culturally and artistically important enough to be specially archived for posterity, with the idea being that even if the rest of the world blew up, at least these movies would survive (or something like that anyway).

Each year the list tends to be a mix of populist entertainment and more unusual offerings that have been judged to have particular cultural importance and are therefore worth protecting. The 25 movies picked for this year have now been announced, and it’s a suitably eclectic mix.

Movies chosen include modern Best Picture winners The Silence Of The Lambs (which has been included despite its depiction of a transgender person still being controversial) and Forrest Gump, but also stretch back into the silent era with The Cry Of The Children, A Cure For Pokeritis and Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid. One of the more unusual inclusions is the Nicholas Brothers Family Home Movies, which were shot in the 1930s and 1940s. These were judged worthy of inclusion because Fayard and Harold Nicholas not only made a rare document of African-American middle class life during that period, but as they were renowned dancers, their footage also covers Broadway and Hollywood during that period, including the only known footage of shows such as Babes In Arms.

Take a look below for the full list:
Allures (1961)
Bambi (1942)
The Big Heat (1953)
A Computer Animated Hand (1972)
Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment (1963)
The Cry of the Children (1912)
A Cure for Pokeritis (1912)
El Mariachi (1992)
Faces (1968)
Fake Fruit Factory (1986)
Forrest Gump (1994)
Growing Up Female (1971)
Hester Street (1975)
I, An Actress (1977)
The Iron Horse (1924)
The Kid (1921)
The Lost Weekend (1945)
The Negro Soldier (1944)
Nicholas Brothers Family Home Movies (1930s-40s)
Norma Rae (1979)
Porgy and Bess (1959)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Stand and Deliver (1988)
Twentieth Century (1934)
The War of the Worlds (1953)

Cloud Atlas Concept Art Introduces Us To Future Korea

December 28, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Although it’s the type of film that could be either masterpiece or disaster, Clud Atlas is definitely an intriguing proposition. Based on Davit Mitchell’s book, it has three directors, leading two separate shooting units, telling six stories, all featuring the same actors, but who’ll be playing different genders and races in different stories.

It’s an ambitious and unusual movie, which apparently only got financed because Asian investors were intrigued by its idea of a single soul travelling through all the tales. Now some new concept art and an image from the movie have appeared online. They illustrate ‘An Orison of Sonmi~451′, which was the fifth story in the book, and is set in a corporate run Korea in 2144. The photo shows Bae Doona as the title character from the tale, but perhaps the most interesting image is the one above.

It’s a rendering of futuristic Seoul, but with the 19th Century sailing ship from Cloud Atlas’ first story in the foreground. It gives a hint as to how to tales – which stretch across 300 years – will be visually joined together. The movie, directed by Tom Twyker and the Wachoski siblings, should be in cinemas at the end of 2012. (Images via HanCinema)

Taylor Lautner’s Not Coming Out, Despite (Faked) Magazine Cover

December 27, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gay Twilight fans might have got a little excited over the last couple of days, as a cover of US magazine People, dated Jan. 7th, has been doing the viral internet rounds. It appears to be for a special issue in which Lautner gives an interview in which, ‘Tired of rumors, the 19-year-old Twilight star opens up about his decision to finaly come out. ‘I’m more liberated, and happier than I’ve ever been.”

Unsurprisingly though, the whole thing is fabricated, with a spokesperson for People saying it was ‘absolutely fake.’ It’s almost a right of passage in Hollywood that rumours an actor is gay have to swirl about them at some point, but sadly for those living in desperate hope, there’s no indication Taylor likes anything other than the ladies.

Tatum, McConaughey & Pettyfer Prepare To Strip Down In First Pic From Magic Mike

December 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If you like male celebrity skin, you’re gonna be happy with Magic Mike, which sees the likes of Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Bomer playing strippers, all based on Tatum’s days as a young man taking his clothes off for cash!

Warner has released the first image from the Steven Soderbergh movie, which sees Tatum as Mike, an experienced stripper who takes a young dancer called The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money. McConaughey, who’s looking oddly patriotic in the image above, plays a slightly older stripper who now owns his own club. It’s due out in June.

Mission: Impossible Tops The Christmas US Box Office

December 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Christmas US box office is slightly unusual, as while it was a holiday four-day weekend, rather than releasing movie on a Friday, many of the studios decided to either release their movie early or wait until Christmas itself, largely because they now Christmas Eve always tends to be an unsually weak day (whereas Saturday is normally the best day of the week). The result is that while some of these new films movies got off to decent starts, they couldn’t beat out previously released flicks.

The chart topper was Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which is shaping up to be a decent blockbuster for Paramount. Expanding into normal cinemas after its IMAX start last weekend, the movie took a strong $46 million over the Christmas weekend, and should take a lot more leading into New Year..

The top new entry was at number four, with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo taking $19.4 million over the weekend following its release in the middle of last week. It’s an okay start for a rather serious, R-rated movie, but the studio was hoping that with David Fincher at the helm it would really hit it big.

The Adventures Of Tintin came in fifth with $16.1 million, which is a disappointment after the movie hit it big in the rest of the world, having already grossed $239 million internationally. We Bought A Zoo came next with $15.6 million, which is lower than had been hoped for, but it’s rather early to say if it can make up ground over the coming days.

Spielberg’s War Horse didn’t get released until Sunday, so it’s two-day take of $15.0 million isn’t too bad at all, especially for a period war movie. Many are thinking the film could well turn into a decent sized hit and will end up as the highest grossing of the Christmas releases. The final new entry was the sci-fi flick The Darkest Hour, which took a weak $5.5 million.

Overall the box office was up on last year, which will be a relief to Hollywood after several weeks where things have been in the doldrums. However, many have been predicting problems due to the fact the release schedule is ridiculously packed. It certainly seems that with so much competition, the new movies (and indeed the holdovers) have all opened lower than they might have if they’d had a clearer run.

Take a look below for the Christmas 2011 US box office top 10.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol $46.2 $78.6
2 Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows $31.8 $90.5
3 Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked $20.0 $56.9
4 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo $19.4 $27.7
5 The Adventures Of Tintin $16.1 $24.1
6 We Bought A Zoo $15.6 $15.6
7 War Horse $15.0 $15.0
8 The Darkest Hour $5.5 $5.5
9 New Year’s Eve $4.9 $34.2
10 The Descendants $3.4 $33.7

Getting Angsty In New Amazing Spider-man Pics

December 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The studios are using the end of the year to try and get film fans excited about what’s coming in 2012, and one of the films Sony is hoping film fans will turn up in droves for is their superhero reboot, The Amazing Spider-man.

Now the studio has released some new images via the movie’s Facebook page, which you can see above and below. It’s all looking a little angsty as Peter Parker heads back to high school and turns from Tobey Maguire into Andrew Garfield. Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Like most teenagers his age, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret that his father held…a secret that will ultimately shape his destiny as Spider-Man. This is the first in a series of movies that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story. On July 3rd, 2012, the untold story begins.’

The film stars Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker), Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Denis Leary (George Stacy), Rhys Ifans (Curt Conners), Martin Sheen (Ben Parker), and Sally Field (May Parker), and is directed by Marc Webb.

First Image Arrives From Argo

December 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Ben Affleck has turned out to be a far better director than many would have expected from his spotty acting career, to the point where some people actually get a little bit excited when they know he’s gonna bring out a new movie. If you’re one of those people, then mark October 5th in your diary, as that’s when Aergo is due to hit UK cinemas.

The very intriguing movie is based on a true story, which the synopsis says, ‘chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis – the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the US embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.’

That plan involves creating a fake sci-fi movie, enlisting help from Hollywood and pretending they’re looking to shoot it in Iran. The film also stars Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Alan Arkin, Scoot McNairy(who’s pictured on the piece of paper in the image above), Michael Parks, Taylor Schilling, Clea DuVall, and Tate Donovan.

Warner released the first image from the movie as part of their 2012 preview, letting us see Affleck’s spiffy new beard!
