Weekend Gets Two London Critics’ Circle Film Awards Nominations

December 20, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The people behind Weekend should be smiling today, as the little film that could not only hit £200k at the UK box office over the weekend but it’s just picked up two nominations from the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards.

Director Andrew Haigh is up for Breakthrough British Filmmaker while Tom Cullen is in the mix for British Actor Of The Year. It’s a great shame the film missed out in the British Film Of The Year category, but that’s more testament to what a good year it’s been for UK film than anything about the wonderful movie.

Other LGBT allied nominations include Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In in the Foreign-Language Film Of The Year category, and Christopher Plummer up for Best Supporting Actor for playing an elderly gay man in Beginners.

You can find the full list of nominations here.

James Franco’s Gay Poet Biopic Gets Distribution

December 20, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a man who’s keen to insist he’s straight, James Franco sure does have a lot of interest in the gays (and I’m not hinting at anything there, as if he was gay Hollywood would probably be insisting he had nothing to do with anything that wasn’t 100% straight). Franco’s played gay in Milk and Howl, and the last two films he directed were both biopics of gay people.

One of those, The Broken Tower, about gay poet Hart Crane, premiered back in June at the LA Film Festival. However, despite Franco writing and starring in the movie, it’s taken a while to find distribution because it’s not about the most commercial subject matter and was shot in black and white. However now THR reports that Focus World, the digital distribution arm of Focus Features, have picked up the US rights to the movie and plan to bring it out in America on January 10th.

A few years ago the movie would probably have found it tough to get much of a cinema release at all, but with digital projection the cost of bringing movies out has dropped, allowing films like The Broken Tower to reach cinemas.

At the moment there’s no news on when it might reach the UK, but a US release should certainly help it get picked up over here.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the other biopic of a gay man Franco’s directed is about Rebel Without A Cause star Sal Mineo. That’s also awaiting distribution.

New Posters: 21 Jump Street

December 20, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

New posters have popped up online for some of next year’s movie, so take a look above and below for new shots from 21 Jump Street, Mirror Mirror and Cosmopolis.

Although 21 Jump Street is loosely based on the 1980s Johnny Depp TV series of the same name, it’s a far more comic take on concept. It sees Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as a pair of underachieving cops who are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a drug ring. The poster above is fairly generic, but it ain’t bad. The film’s out March 16th. (Image via Moviefone)

The trailer for Mirror Mirror was pretty dreadful, but these two posters aren’t bad. Directed by Tarsem, the film is a comic take on the Snow White legend starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane. It’s due to his cinemas on March 16th.

Finally, this rather brooding poster for Cosmopolis has appeared over at CosmopolisFilm.com. David Cronenberg’s take on Don De Lillo’s novel stars Robert Pattinson as young billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) who starts out just wanting to get a haircut, but as the day progresses, he must deal with the fallout from the decisions he’s made in his life. The film’s out in 2012.

December 20, 2011 By Movie Muser 1 Comment

The Coen Brothers’ next movie, Inside Llewlyn Davis ,is slowly coming together, ready to start shooting in NYC early next year. Now another piece of the casting puzzle has been filled, with actress Jeanine Serralles (Two Lovers, Across the Universe) signing on, according to Variety.

Oscar Isaac stars as the title character, a folk singer making his way through the Greenwich Village music scene in the 1960s. The movie is loosely based on the life of folk singer Dave Van Ronk. Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman also star. It isn’t known exactly what character Jeanine Serralles’ will play.

F. Murray Abraham is apparently also circling the project, but it isn’t known who he would play either. Joel Coen and Ethan Coen are directing from their own original screenplay.

Prometheus Trailer Preview

December 19, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is due to hit on Thursday, but today on Apple trailers a 30 second preview has dropped has dropped, so you can get a miniature taste of Ridley’s return to sci-fi. The director has also been talking to Filmophilia about the movie, and has cleared up whether we’d see the infamous xenomorph in this movie, which we’ve been promised will be shot through with Alien DNA (many had assumed the HR Giger creatures would pop up right at the end). However Ridley says, “No. Absolutely not. They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!”

He adds, “There’s a quote I did, a pretty good quote: By the end of the third act you start to realize there’s a DNA of the very first Alien, but none of the subsequent aliens. To tell you what that is is a pity, and I’m not going to tell you, because it’s actually pretty good, pretty organic to the process and to the original. But we go back, we don’t go forward.”

Take a look below for our first taste of this very exciting sci-fi-flick. Prometheus is due for release on June 1st, 2012.

Wrath Of The Titans Trailer – Sam Worthington works up a sweat

December 19, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last year they clashed and now those Titans are going to have some wrath, with Sam Worthington returning as Perseus on March 30th, 2012. The trailer for the movie has just dropped, which suggests we’re in for more of the same, with lots of derring-do, battling monsters and Liam Neeson being a God. Hopefully though this film will be a little more coherent. Quite why Sam Worthington needs his new hairdo I’m not sure, although I suppose it does make him look more like Harry Hamlin in the original 1980s Clash. Click below to take a look.

Everything is pretty intense and it seems Christopher Nolan isn’t letting up the brroding tension for the last instalment of his Batman trilogy. Dark Knight Rises Prologue Script Pages Revealed?

December 19, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A six-minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises has been playing ahead of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol at IMAX cinemas in the UK over the weekend and causing much excitement. There have been a couple of problems though, as not everyone has an IMAX cinema close by to watch the footage and with the villainous Bane wearing breathing apparatus, it’s tough to tell what he’s saying.

Now script page for the prologue has shown up online, which you can read below and find out exactly what Bane is saying, as well as getting a taste for what you’ll miss if you can’t get to an IMAX cinema. It should be noted that while the pages showed up on WWTDD.com, they haven’t been confirmed by Warner Bros, so it’s possible they are wrong even if they are fairly convincing.
