Jay Baruchel Going Punk With The Rebel Kind

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While quite a few Canadians have made it big (Ryan Reynolds, William Shatner, Michael J. Fox), once they’ve gone Hollywood, you’d never know their roots lay north of the border. However geek-cutie Jay Baruchel has stayed endearingly close to his Canadian motherland, and now he’s even signed on to star in a movie that’ll teach us all about the Vancouver punk rock scene – a subject audiences have been itching to get info on for years!

Variety reports Baruchel will play the lead in The Rebel Kind, based on the memoirs by The Modernettes frontman Buck Cherry (aka John Armstrong). The movie will center on the emerging punk rock scene in Vancouver during the 1980s and will be seen from the point of view of a band that just can’t seem to make it. The project is being written and directed by Reg Harkema, who has directed multiple projects, but also recently worked as an editor on Goon, the upcoming hockey comedy which was written by and stars Baruchel.

Producer Kevin Eastwood, “A lot of people don’t realize that Vancouver was a huge hotbed of musical activity in the early 80s. At the time, Vancouver was one of the three axis points of the universe — there was London, New York — and then there was Vancouver.” Hmm, we’ll reserve the right to be a little sceptical of that. There’s no news on when the movie might shoot.

Rock Of Ages Trailer – Tom Cruise rocks out!

December 14, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the more bizarre yet intriguing movies of 2012 is Rock Of Ages, based on the Broadway musical that takes a whole host of 80s hair metal tunes from the likes of Def Leppard and Foreigner, and mixes it with the story of small town girl called Sherrie and city boy called Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. If you watch the trailer, it’s more than a little bizarre, but could be a lot of fun. It’s just a shame that while there’s a big build up to seeing Tom Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx, we don’t get to see him rock out! It’s due in UK cinemas June 8th.

First Official Great Gatsby Pics Released

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s a full year until Baz Luhrmann’s 3D take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby hits cinemas, but the first official shots from the film have now been released (see them above and below), featuring Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.

It all looks wonderfully flappery, but with a budget over over $100 million, you’d hope it’d look good. It does seem to be an awful lot to spend on a period piece in the current climate, but many feel Warner Bros. is looking to the future with the movie. While The Great Gatsby is seen as one of the great American novels, the definitive film version is yet to be made (the closest is the rather stuffy 70s version with Robert Redford). If they can get it right, Warner will be making money out of the film for decades, especially as it’s a core text for most US schools, and so spending the money now should pay off in the future – and indeed could well pay off now.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.’

And if you fancy making a pic of yourself cuddling Leo DiCaprio, we’ve started the photoshop work for you at the bottom of this post.

Arthur & Lancelot Has Budget Problems

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After a rather dodgy year for the studios at the box office, the purse strings are snapping tight all over Hollywood. While in good times studios have tended to allow the budgets of big projects to bloat (indeed many producers rely on it, pitching the studios a budget way less than what they know it will cost, in the belief the studio will stump up the extra cash once they’re invested in a project), now they’re stamping down.

Earlier this year The Lone Ranger nearly got cancelled after its budget ballooned to well over $200 million and just yesterday Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost was put on hold after Warner asked them to cut back the slowly creeping costs. Now Deadline reports the same studio is looking at another costly project, Arthur & Lancelot, and asking the makers of that to do the same. Originally budgeted at $90 million, the film has since crept up to around $130 million. That’s made Warner sweat, especially as with Joel Kinnaman and Kit Harington cast in the title roles, there isn’t a star to hang the movie on.

As a result Warner has told the producers they’re welcome to try and set the project up at another studio, or to bring costs down and stay with them. It isn’t known which of those option director David Dobkin would prefer, but in the current climate he may find it difficult to get anyone to pay for a $100 million+ Arthurian film with no big stars.

The projects mentioned above aren’t the only ones that have come a cropper over costs recently, as both Guillermo Del Tror’s At The Mountains Of Madness and Ron Howard’s ambitious take on The Dark Tower have foundered for the same reason.

Saoirse Ronan to Star In How I Live Now

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Hanna’s Saoirse Ronan is certainly doing well for herself, having built herself into quite the star since she first caught people’s attention in Atonement. Now Variety reports that she has signed on to star in Kevin Macdonald’s indie drama, How I Live Now, based on a 2004 novel by Meg Rosoff.

In the film, Saoirse Ronan will play Daisy, a teenage girl from New York City who travels to England to spend the summer with family in the English countryside. However, when World War III breaks out and insurgents invade, Daisy and a younger girl named Piper must survive alone in the woods as they try to make it to safety. So it’s a bit like Red Dawn except with more tea and scones.

Jeremy Brock and Tony Grisoni wrote the script, but it isn’t known when the movie might shoot.

Chris Pratt In Talks For Bigelow’s Bin Laden Film

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Parks and Recreation and Moneyball star Chris Pratt, best known for his comedic skills, is taking on a more serious role in the Kathryn Bigelow untitled thriller that looks at how an elite Navy SEAL squad killed Osama Bin Laden. However it isn’t known exactly what part he’ll play.

Chris Pratt – who does have rather solidery looks, it has to be said – is in early talks to star alongside Jason Clarke in the film. There have been accusations aimed at the project, claiming that President Barack Obama’s administration has been feeding the filmmakers information about the operation to kill Osama Bin Laden in order to advance their own politic agenda, although much of that does appear to be part of the insane anti-Obama loathing of many US conservatives.

That said, the start date has been pushed back on this project, insuring that it will be released after the next US Presidential election. Director Kathryn Bigelow hopes to begin shooting in February. (Source: Twitch)

Denzel Washington Could Be The Equalizer

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s been a few months since we last heard about plans to turn the 1980s Edward Woodward TV The Equalizer into a movie. Russell Crowe had been attached to tthe lead role, but it now appears he’s out and Denzel Washington is in, according to the film’s production company, Escape Artists.

Also off the project is Crash writer/director Paul Haggis, who’s been replaced in the screenwriting chair by Richard Wenk. All previous attempts to make an Equalizer movie – and there have been many – have got stuck in development hell due to differences of opinion over the tone of the movie (after all, there’s virtually no reason to make an Equalizer film, so finding a worthwhile script has always been tough), and it seems this version is have just as many issues.

The original series followed Robert McCall, who had a murky past working for an agency where he had to do terrible things. Seeking redemption, he left ‘The Company’ behind and set himself up as a private detective, each week helping those who the police can not – or will not – assist, while also dealing with his former boss and colleagues.

At the moment Washington is only loosely attached, so don’t be shocked if he bails too.

Paranorman UK Teaser – Stop-motion goes a little sixth sense

December 13, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Video: ParaNorman trailer (MSN Exclusive)
Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick may have moved on from Laika, the animation company he helped found, but Laika is still in the business of creating intricate stop-motion movies, and from the evidence of this teaser trailer, Paranorman will be no different. In ParaNorman, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits. The film reaches the UK September 2012.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer – Channing Tatum’s back

December 13, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra got pilloried by many people, but it actually made a fair amount of cash. So while Paramount was keen to continue the franchise, it appears they also wanted to start over a little as well – or at least that’s what this trailer suggests. Going for a less flashly silly style than the first film, this looks like it’ll be more grounded and action-packed. It’s actually kind of interesting though that Channing Tatum’s Duke seems to be slightly sidelined in favour of introducing Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock and Bruce Willis as the original GI Joe, as well as showing off some spectacular Snake Eyes fighting. The film June 22nd, but enjoy the trailer.

Drew Barrymore Wants To Direct Street Lights

December 13, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Every year at this time, the ‘Black List’ of the best unproduced screenplays doing the rounds in Hollywood is released. One of the movies on this year’s list has just got a talent injection, as NewsInFilm says Drew Barrymore has attached herself to direct When The Street Lights Go On.

The script, written by Eddie O’Keefe and Chris Hutton has shades of Stand By Me and Super 8 about it, as it’s a coming of age movie set in the 80s, about a teenage boy called Charlie who fancies himself a filmmaker. He stumbles across the bodies of a 17-year-old beauty and the English teacher she was having an affair with, and then tries to work out who committed the double murder.

It’d be a very different movie for Barrymore after her directing debut, Whip It. At the moment, it’s just one film on her list of potentials, but with the script now getting Black List attention, expect to more about it in the coming months.
