‘Gay Golden Girls’ Comedy TV Series Silver Foxes Has Been Picked Up For Development

March 29, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last summer it was revealed that Stan Zimmerman and James Berg were working on a sitcom called Silver Foxes, described as a kind of ‘gay Golden Girls’. Zimmerman and Berg even wrote episodes of the classic 1980/1990s sitcom, as well as the likes of Roseanne and Gilmore Girls, so are well placed to take on a look at the issues of ageing gay men.

To help see if there was potential in the show, they even staged a table read of the Pilot episode for the single-camera comedy with George Takei, Leslie Jordan, Bruce Vilanch, Todd Sherry, Melissa Peterman, Daniele Gaither and Cheri Oteri involved.

Now the concept has been picked up for development by Super Deluxe (owned by Turner Broadcasting, which in turn is owned by Time Warner). While Super Deluxe is best known for producing online short-form series, it is hoping to make Silver Foxes for a cable network or streaming platform.

While it was originally said the show was about four older gay men in a senior living facility, Variety reports the current version focuses on ‘two older gay men and one twink (their buddy’s young lover) that rescue a friend who’s been forced-back-in-the-closet at his homophobic assisted living facility. After they bring him back to their mid-century Palm Springs house, the foursome creates a fabulous family of friends.’

Zimmerman and Berg were ‘inspired to make the show after seeing the documentary “Gen Silent,” which explores the lives of LGBTQ seniors navigating discrimination in nursing homes’. Silver Foxes is still fairly early in development, so there’s no news on when, or if, we’ll ever see it.

Call Me By Your Name Oscar-Winner James Ivory Wishes The Film Had More Nudity

March 29, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Remains Of The Day and Howard’s End director James Ivory recently became the oldest Oscar-winner ever for his screenplay for Call Me By Your Name. However, age doesn’t mean he doesn’t with there weren’t more flesh on the screen, as talking to The Guardian Ivory has criticised how the finished movie handled its nudity. He says:

‘“When Luca says he never thought of putting nudity in, that is totally untrue,” says Ivory. “He sat in this very room where I am sitting now, talking about how he would do it, so when he says that it was a conscious aesthetic decision not to – well, that’s just bullshit.

“When people are wandering around before or after making love, and they’re decorously covered with sheets, it’s always seemed phoney to me. I never liked doing that. And I don’t do it, as you know.” In Maurice, his 1987 film of EM Forster’s posthumously published gay love story, “the two guys have had sex and they get up and you certainly see everything there is to be seen. To me, that’s a more natural way of doing things than to hide them, or to do what Luca did, which is to pan the camera out of the window toward some trees. Well …” He gives a derisive snort.’

Although many have talked about the sexy side of the movie – most particularly the peach scene – the film is actually quite coy. It seems that if Ivory has been behind the camera, things would have been different.

The writer/director also spoke about why he kept his long-term romantic relationship with Ismail Merchant – the producer side of the famed ‘Merchant-Ivory’ filmmaking partnership – a secret until after Merchant died during surgery in 2005. Even though they made films that touched on gay themes – most noticeably 1987’s Maurice – they kept quiet about their own love.

Ivory says the reason was because, “That is not something that an Indian Muslim would ever say publicly or in print. Ever! You have to remember that Ismail was an Indian citizen living in Bombay, with a deeply conservative Muslim family there. It’s not the sort of thing he was going to broadcast. Since we were so close and lived most of our lives together, I wasn’t about to undermine him.”

Call Me By Your Name is still making headlines, most recently for being pulled from the Beijing International Film Festival, according to Reuters. There was no reason given for why it was pulled, but many assumed it was a result of a Chinese Government censorship crack down. LGBT themes have long had difficulty in the country, sometimes being allowed and sometimes banned. In the last couple of years there’s been concerted efforts to remove them from the big and small screen.

There’s also been renewed interest (some would say paranoia) about foreign ideas and morality being imported into China via movies and TV, with some fearing it as a kind of cultural imperialism that’s a threat to the unity of the Chinese people. It’s possible he Call Me By Your Name screening was a victim of worries over this, particularly following recent announcement that the government wanted to be even more hands on in its censorship role than it had been previously.

Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer & John Cena Join Robert Downey Jr. In The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle

March 29, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just over a year ago it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. was sett to follow in Rex Harrison’s (and Eddie Murphy’s) footsteps by playing Doctor Dolittle on the big screen. Now the cast has grown, with the likes of Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer & John Cena, who will be voicing animals alongside the previously announced Tom Holland, Selena Gomez, Emma Thompson, and Ralph Fiennes.

Antonio Banderas is onboard to play a pirate, with Michael Sheen as a character called Mudfly.

To help us picture who everyone in the voice cast will be, Downey Jr. tweeted out and image to show who’s a giraffe, who’s a dog and who’s a parrot. You can take a look at that image below.

The will be based around Hugh Lofting’s famous children’s character, a doctor who tires of treating animals and learns to speak to animals. There’s no news on the exact story for this new version, but it will involve the Doctor will be going off on a big trip. The film is due out April 2019 and is planned as the first part of a new film franchise. [Read more…]

The Carmilla Movie (BFI Flare Review) – The popular lesbian vampire web series hits the big screen

March 25, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Elise Bauman, Natasha Negovanlis, Annie Briggs, Kaitlyn Alexander, Nicole Stamp
Director: Spencer Maybee
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 24th 2018 (BFI Flare Screening)

I have to admit Carmilla passed me by. There have been three seasons of the web series about a 330-year-old lesbian vampire woman who falls for a mortal and ends up fighting evil, but it wasn’t a show I’d ever heard of. However, the screening of The Carmilla Movie at BFI Flare showed me quite how remiss I’ve been, as the National Film Theatre was packed with ‘Cream Puffs’ (which is what fans of the show call themselves) who were rabidly excited for the movie, and went into true fangirling mode when Carmilla herself – aka actress Natasha Negovanlis – stepped onto the stage.

By the end of the film I was beginning to understand how Carmilla has managed to transcend its web series roots, build a loyal fanbase around the world and get turned into a movie. [Read more…]

Rift (Rökkur) (BFI Flare Review) – Gay horror gets strange in Iceland

March 25, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Björn Stefánsson, Sigurður Þór Óskarsson, Guðmundur Ólafsson, Aðalbjörg Árnadóttir
Director: Erlingur Thoroddsen
Running Time: 111 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 24th 2018 (BFI Flare Screening)

For a nation with a population of just under 350,000 people, Iceland punches above its weight in the world of film. However, it’s always tended to be – as Rift director Erlingur Thoroddsen said in the Q&A following the BFI Flare Film Festival screening of his movie – straight, white Icelandic dudes making the films. Thankfully that looks likes it’s starting to change to include queer voices, with the recent coming-of-age movie, Heartstone, and now the horror-thriller, Rift.

Gunni has recently split it off with his long-term boyfriend, Einar, and has started seeing someone new. He receives a strange phone call in the middle of the night from a seemingly unstable Einar, who says he’s at his parents’ holiday property called Rökkur (Twilight). Afraid Einar is going to do something drastic, Gunni heads off to the remote house to make sure his former lover is okay. [Read more…]

Queerama (DVD Review) – A cornucopia look at decades of gay British life on screen

March 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Various
Director: Daisy Asquith
Running Time: 70 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: March 26th 2018 (UK)

Director Daisy Asquith’s mixture of archive footage and music is the sort of film that is likely to beguile and entrance some viewers while leaving others perplexed and a bit bored. That’s essentially the nature of the beast though, as there’s no traditional voiceover or simplistic signposting (barring a few title cards) in this journey through decades of queer footage from the BFI (British Film Institute). It’s done somewhat chronologically and somewhat thematically (more the latter than the former), with the whole thing held together by the music of John Grant, Goldfrapp, and Hercules And Love Affair.

At first it feels a little random, taking its time to get the audience accustomed to the way it cuts between its multiple sources, sometimes showing chunks of historic TV documentaries interspersed with footage of queer lives from films and shorts, or using music or a particular interview to thematically anchor what you’re seeing on screen. Through this it starts to build something surprisingly powerful, paying testament to both LGBTQ lives in Britain over the past century and celebrating (and sometimes reproaching) the way queer lives have been depicted on screen. Wonder (Blu-ray Review) – Important life lessons for young and old

March 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Izabela Vidovic, Mandy Patinkin
Director: Stephen Chbosky
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 16th 2018 (UK)

God bless young Jacob Tremblay. The Room and Book Of Henry star is impossibly cute, something that comes through even under the large amounts of makeup he has to wear for Wonder. Although it might seem a little creepy to be talking about a young boy’s cuteness, in this case it’s vital to the film, as Tremblay’s talents are so central to the movie. The makeup is potentially a real barrier for an actor though, and a tough one for somebody so young to overcome. Jacob does it though with aplomb.

Tremblay plays August ‘Auggie’ Pullman, who was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome, which has left him with significant facial deformities. He’s been home-schooled by his mother (Julia Roberts), but will be going to mainstream school for the first time when he joins the fifth grade. Auggie is a shy and sensitive child, very aware of how others treat him because he looks different. [Read more…]

Justice League (Blu-ray Review) – The superhero team-up we’ve all been waiting for?

March 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher
Director: Zack Snyder
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 26th 2018 (UK)

Poor old Justice League. It’s a superhero team-up that fans have been waiting for decades for. When it was announced a couple of years ago it immediately sounded like it would be the biggest movie of 2018. However, following the lacklustre reception to the Warner/DC movies that led up to it (Wonder Woman excepted) and production problems including director Zack Snyder leaving due to personal problems and replacement Joss Whedon extensively retooling the movie only months before release, it certainly didn’t bode well. It also felt like Warner Bros. had slightly given up on it, or at least they failed to generate the sort of hype the movie needed, with a weak marketing campaign and little sense that this is what we’d all been waiting for.

As a result, it’s ended up as the lowest grossing of all the DCEU movies, behind even Suicide Squad. [Read more…]

Duck Butter Trailer – Arrested Development’s Alia Shawcat writes & stars in the lesbian-themed movie

March 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘When Naima (Alia Shawkat, “Search Party”) and Sergio (Laia Costa, Victoria ) meet at a club, they hit it off instantly, connecting over their disdain for the dishonesty they have experienced in their respective romantic relationships. High on their fast chemistry, the two women concoct a romantic experiment: They plan to spend the next 24 hours together, having sex on the hour. Above all, they commit to perfect honesty with each other, a theoretical remedy to the deceit they believe to be an element of modern relationships. But their relationship in a vacuum doesn’t go as planned, and soon the weight of their commitment begins to close in, threatening the ideals of the daylong experiment and their chances for a romantic future tomorrow.

‘The latest film from Miguel Arteta, the director behind Beatriz at Dinner, The Good Girl and Chuck & Buck, Duck Butter is a blistering look at intimacy in a pressure cooker. Co-written by Shawkat and executive produced by the Duplass Brothers, the film offers a searing interrogation of modern romance, with all its dizzying highs and heartbreaking betrayals, all packed into an intense 24 hours.’

The film will have its World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, April 20th, before a US theatrical release in NY/LA on April 27th and on digital platforms nationwide on May 1st. Take a look at the Duck Butter trailer below. [Read more…]
