Paul Rudd Up For Baseball Player Turned Spy Drama, The Catcher Was a Spy

May 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paul-ruddPaul Rudd made a name for himself in comedy and more recently has been proving his action skills in the Marvel universe as Ant Man. Now he’s keen to show he’s a dab hand at drama, as Deadline reports he’s set to star in the true-life drama, The Catcher Was a Spy.

As Deadline points out, it’s a story it’s surprising hasn’t been turned into a movie before (although the likes of Warner, Miramax and HBO have tried), as Rudd will play ‘Moe Berg, an Ivy League grad and attorney who spoke nine languages, but that wasn’t the only reason he stood out among his baseball teammates when he spent 15 years as a journeyman player for such teams as the New York Robins and Chicago White Sox.

‘Their biggest worry might have been hitting a curveball; Berg doubled as a top secret spy for the OSS (a forerunner for the CIA), who helped the U.S. win the race against Germany to build the atomic bomb. Perhaps Berg was helped in his efforts to stay under the radar by the fact his skills were not going to make anyone forget about Babe Ruth. When Berg played for the Senators, teammate Dave Harris once famously said, “Moe Berg can speak twelve languages, but can’t hit any of them!”’

Ben Lewin (The Sessions) will direct from a script by Saving Private Ryan’s Robert Rodat, based on Nicholas Dawidoff’s book. It’s not known when it will shoot.

Alicia Vikander Will Be The New Lara Croft In Tomb Raider Film Reboot

May 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alicia-vikander-man-from-uncleWhile there was a lot of hype around Angelina Jolie playing video game character Lara Croft, neither 2001’s Tomb Raider, notr its 2003 follow-up, Cradle Of Life, found much love from audiences. However, Hollywood is convinced there’s a franchise in there and so has been busy planning a reboot.

Now it looks like they’ve found the person they want as the new Croft, Alicia Vikander, according to THR. It oddly mimics Jolie’s casting, as Angelina had just broken through with a critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning performance when she got the role of Lara, while Vikander has just broken through with the likes of Ex Machina and an Oscar-nominated performance in The Danish Girl.

Earlier reports suggest Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Daisy Ridley was being eyed to star, but it appears a formal offer never materialised, while Cara Delevigne also got close to landing the role. Roar Uthuag (The Wave) is set to direct the movie, although it’s not 100% clear when it will shoot.

Jamie Foxx In Talks For Grown-Up Puppet Movie, The Happytime Murders

May 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jamie-foxxFor quite a few years The Jim Henson Company has been working on The Happytime Murders, but despite plans to shoot in 2010 and 2012, and stars likes Katherine Heigl and Cameron Diaz linked to it at various times, the project has remained stuck in development hell. However now the grown-up puppet film looks like it may be moving forward, as Deadline reports Jamie Foxx is in early talks to star.

The basic concept of the film is that it’s set in a world where puppets are second-class citizens, but just as likely to get into booze, drugs and sex as any of their human counterparts. When the puppet cast of 1980s children’s TV show The Happytime Gang begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet (who has a drinking problem), Phil, takes the case with his former human partner, Detective Edwards (Jamie Foxx). It’s been descibed as Avenue Q meets LA Confidential, which is quite a mash-up. There’s not much love lost between the two, with Phil annoyed at Edwards’ squeaky clean, by-the-book attitude.

Jim Henson’s son Brian is set to direct the movie. It’s not clear when it will shoot, but with STX Entertainment now backing the movie, it will hopefully move forward this time. [Read more…]

First Look At An Unrecognisable Neil Patrick Harris In A Series of Unfortunate Events

April 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harrisA few months ago it was revealed that Neil Patrick Harris had been cast to play Count Olaf in Netflix’s uncoming series of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Now someone has managed to grab the first snap of him on the set, and if you weren’t told it was him, you probably wouldn’t believe it.

They’ve sure gone the whole hog with the prosthetics to give him the unique look of the creepy uncle-figure (actually a distant cousin) who takes in a trio of orphans. Olaf is the nefarious baddie, who ends up looking after Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire, while having designs on their fortune.

Barry Sonnenfeld (Men In Black) is directing the first episode of the series, which is currently shooting Vancouver. It’s not known exactly when the show will be released. [Read more…]

Snowden Trailer – Oliver Stone directs Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the whistleblower tale

April 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joseph-gorden-levitt-as-edward-snowdenTo some Edward Snowden is a traitor, while to others he is a hero who blew the whistle of government spying programs. Now Oliver Stone is taking on the tale, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.’

Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage also star.

Snowden was originally due to be released at the end of last year, however it was pushed back (not a good sign) to September 2016, although there have been rumours it may get moved back again. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Richard E. Grant Is Set To Get Villainous In Wolverine 3

April 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Richard-E-GrantWhile we’ve still got a few weeks left until we get to see the next X-Men movie, Apocalypse, things are already moving fast on the next standalone Wolverine movie. The film has just added a new bad guy, as THR reports that British actor Richard E. Grant will play a ‘villainous mad-scientist type’ in the movie.

However, there’s no more info of the character than that, including whether it’s someone who’s been see in the comics or whether it’s someone brand new. Indeed, there’s been very little info at all about the plot, other than that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will reteam with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.

It’s not even known whether this film will continue with the original movie timeline, or will take into account the changes that happened due to the events of Days Of Future Past. As the recent Apocalypse trailer showed us that Wolverine is set to make a surprise appearance in that movie, it may be that film which helps set up how this new standalone Wolverine movie fits into the overall mythology.

James Mangold is set to direct, with a March 2017 release set.

Ahead Of Season 3, Watch The First Two Seasons Of The Award-Winning, Gay-Inclusive These People

April 26, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

these-people-slideThere’s still a perception that web series are the preserve of fame-hungry wannabes making vaguely unwatchable rubbish in their basements. However, if you’ve caught any of the web series we’ve posted here, you’ll know there are some great ones out there.

These People ups the ante even further, with an incredible cast of well-known faces and an Oscar-winner who’s helped write some of the scripts. Jim Rash is best known to many Dean Pelton in Community, but he also won an Academy Award for co-writing The Descendants – and now he’s helped pen two episodes of These People alongside Zac Hug (who co-created These People with Jamie Heinrich), including one which picked up a gong at the Indie Series Awards.

The third season of the award-winning and LGBT-inclusive show starts releasing episodes on April 30th, so it’s a perfect time to catch up on Season’s 1 & 2!

If you need a bit of a primer, here’s some info from the show’s website on the highly dysfunctional world of the Bennet family: ‘Todd Bennet (Zac Hug): high strung, unable to keep his boyfriend Josh (Jeremy Glazer) around, with his heart in the right place. The twins, Chuck and Simon (Cameron Miller-Desart): one’s had some mental health issues, the other owns six restaurants. And Jenny (Claire Downs): an actress, their little sister,  with a lot of insane ideas. On their own, they’re pretty messy. Together, they’re much worse. And then there’s mom (Carolyn Hennesy).  And now,  a gossip columnist (Jim Rash), Jenny’s agent (Mele Ihara), and a mean publicist named Ann Rice (Elizabeth Boykewich) take on Jenny’s beard boyfriend (Ben Baur) and the outlying Bennets: Chuck’s wife, Marilyn (Amanda Walsh) and their daughter, Adelaide (Leigh Epstein). All this under the watchful eye of Dr. Maher (Keith Powell) and his wife, Dr. Maher (Jill Knox-Powell).’

Things get even more complicated in the upcoming Season 3, which premiered its first episode live a couple of days ago, ahead of new, regular episodes from April 30th.

Take a look at These People Seasons 1 & 2 below, along with teasers for Season 3. [Read more…]

Tough Love S3 Ep5 – Steven tries to hang out with the gays, but it doesn’t go well

April 26, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tough-love-s3-ep5It’s a bit of a gay-themed web series party in Episode 5 of Season 3 of Tough Love, as regulars Steven Bell and Blaire Wendel are joined by the likes of Hunting Season and Adulting’s Ben Baur, Broad City’s Dino Petrera and My Gay Roommate’s Noam Ash.

The newcomers are, wait for it, GAYS! That might not sound surprising for a show like this, but Steven isn’t all that great at, well, being social, so isn’t impressed when his friend brings along a bunch of other gays. However, the problem may not be them, it may just be that Steven isn’t all that great at judging the tone of the situation, especially when he decides to drink too much and tell a tale about butts and spray can caps.

Blaire meanwhile ends up at a book club while chasing girls, but ends up finding someone a little unexpected who seems to be on her wavelength.

Creator/star Steven Bell comments, “This week’s episode finds Steven in his most insecure state when the coolest gays in Astoria crash his picnic in the park. I wanted to make an episode about how uncool Blaire and I feel around some people in the city. I”m a mess in this. Enjoy”. Take a look at the new episode below and click here to catch up on the rest of Season 3. [Read more…]

Go-Go Boy Interrupted: S2, Ep4 – Danny finds out about drag queen dilemmas

April 26, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

go-go-boy-interrupted-s2-ep4As you’d hope for a web series called Go-Go Boy Interrupted, Jimmy Fowlie’s show is often good at flashing some flesh. For this episode they bring in a master of it with Andrew Christian boy Pablo Hernandez showing off his acting skills – while only wearing some bulge inducing undies of course.

The ep also features Drew Droege, who lets us into some of the problems of drag queens, while being very bitchy. There’s also time for Danny to get a blast from the past when he meets someone he used to go to school with.

It is all slightly random, but it’s a fun episode, so take a look at it below. And if you need to catch up with early episodes of Go-Go Boy Interrupted, you can click here to find them. [Read more…]
