April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

domhnall-gleesonThe cast for Darren Aronofsky’s next movie is growing, with Variety reporting that Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson (who’s Domhnall’s brother), Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris are in talks to join the currently untitled new movie.

They’d star alongside the previously cast Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem in the film, with ‘centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home and disrupt their tranquil existence’. There’s not too much more info on the plot or the roles that everyone will be playing.

The domestic drama is due to start shooting fairly soon, with a 2017 release being eyed.

Sam Mendes To Direct Voyeur’s Motel With Steven Spielberg Producing

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam-MendesAfter a couple of trips into the world of James Bond, it seems Sam Mendes is moving on, as Variety reports that he’s set to direct Voyeur’s Motel, which also has Steven Spielberg set to produce.

It’s a film that could certainly be interesting, as it deals with a salacious subject that raised all manner of ethical concerns. It’ll be based on Gay Talese’s soon to be published non-fiction book, which is about a time back in the 80s when he was research a book about sex in America, when he received a note from a motel owner called Gerald Foos, which read, ‘Dear Mr. Talese: Since learning of your long awaited study of coast-to-coast sex in America, which will be included in your soon to be published book, ‘Thy Neighbor’s Wife,’ I feel I have important information that I could contribute to its contents or to contents of a future book.’

It turned out that what Foos had was a motel which he’d turned into a voyeur’s paradise, where he could spy on his guests having sex. Rather than turning him in to the authorities, Talese signed a confidentiality agreement so he could access the journals and more than Foos had. However, it soon turned out the Foos wasn’t completely reliable and Talese couldn’t completely escape the ethical considerations of what he was now complicit in.

It’s not clear when the movie will shoot.

A New Video Suggests The Matrix Is A Metaphor For Coming Out As Trans

April 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

matrix-slideBack in 1999 when The Matrix was released, neither Lilly nor Lana Wachowski had revealed that they were transgender and were still living their public lives as men. However, a new video has been released suggesting that even if no one knew they were trans, The Matrix is an extended metaphor for coming out as trans.

It’s a more coherent theory than you might think, such as the red and blue pills representing a choice between accepting reality or living a false life. There’s also the fact that Neo is literally reborn once he comes to understand his true self, and that Neo is a name he chooses for himself, but authority figures insist on calling him ‘Mr. Anderson’, a name he had shed.

Youtube critic Film Runner also draws parallels between a scene near the end of the movie where Neo narrowly escapes from being run over by a train, with Lana saying she has once tried to kill herself in front of a train before she began living outwardly as a woman.

It’s certainly a video that’s worth a look. You can watch it below. [Read more…]

Jared Leto Sent Used Condoms To His Suicide Squad Co-Stars To Get Them In The Joker Mood

April 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jared-leto-joker-slideEver since Suicide Squad was shooting we’ve known that Jared Leto spent a decent amount of his time pranking his co-stars, so that in a method acting fashion they were kept on their toes and would never know what he or his Joker character would do next. However, there’s trying to create a particular mood and then there’s sending used condoms and anal beads to people.

I’m pretty sure in lots of places that would be a criminal offence.

However, it is apparently what he did to the likes of Will Smith, Jai Courtney and co. We’re just hoping by ‘used’ it mean unwrapped and not literally ‘used’ ones.

Leto revealed the news while talking to E! at Cinemacon, adding, “I did a lot of things to create a dynamic to create an element of surprise, a spontaneity and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there. The Joker is somebody who doesn’t really respect things like personal space or boundaries.”

It’s not known exactly what his co-stars made of his antics. Let’s hope they had a healthy sense of humour, and who knows, perhaps it did actually help with their performances! Other ‘jokes’ included sending a live rat to Margot Robbie, a set of bullets to Will Smith and a dead pig to the entire cast.

The Neon Demon Trailer – Nicolas Winding Refn teams with Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves & Christina Hendricks

April 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neon-demon-pic1Nicolas Winding Refn has been working on Neon Demon for several years, but he’s been keeping details about the exact plot to himself. Even with this first trailer, things aren’t exactly made clear, but it does look rather intriguing.

IMDB says of the film, ‘When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.’

Refn has previously said of the movie, “One morning I woke and realized I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty. After making Drive and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew I had to return to tell the story of The Neon Demon. This movie is a manifestation of the strong ties between us and will lead to many more adventures.”

The likes of Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks star. [Read more…]

Sharon Stone Refuses To Shoot In Mississippi Due To Recently Enacted Anti-LGBTI Law

April 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sharon-stoneIn the past few weeks Southern US states seem to have been lining up to see who could enact the ugliest anti-LGBT law, under the guise of religious freedom. However, they’ve come up against a lot of opposition, with major companies such as Paypal announcing they were halting their expansion in North Carolina, and Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr cancelling concerts there, while Bryan Adams did the same in Mississippi.

Now Sharon Stone has joined the chorus, cancelling her plans to shoot her new short film, The Principle, in Mississippi. The movie was due to film there in June, but will now move elsewhere. As the short is about cyber-bullying, it’s a sensible decision to move it.

Stone, who has long been an LGBTI ally and AIDS activist, commented, ‘I will not work in any state that holds or is actively creating laws to legally support discrimination against American citizens whether due to their race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, nor where those laws are passed or approved by the government of said state.’

The laws that have recently been passed have been framed as ensuring religious freedom, protecting privacy and/or avoiding prejudice, but are really thin-veiled attacks on the LGBT community. They have enshrined in State law that businesses can refuse to allow trans people to use the bathroom that correspond to their gender identity and that it is perfectly legal to refuse service to gay people as long as you claim you have a sincerely held belief/prejudice against them. Many of the laws have also attempted to circumvent any local governments extending protections to LGBT people (although after the backlash, North Carolina’s governor backtracked on that part of his state’s law).

It has been a particularly ugly chapter in the US culture wars, with many believing that more than Republican state governments genuinely feeling the laws are needed, they are merely lining up to show their anti-LGBT credentials in an election year. It also unpleasantly mirrors the things many of the same states did in the 1960s after the Federal government extended more rights to African Americans and other ethnic minorities, where they enacted laws in an attempts to prevents desegregation.

ghost-in-the-shell-movie-pic1Paramount has announced the start of shooting in New Zealand on the long-gestating live-action film version of the classic Manga, Ghost In The Shell. The image shows Scarlett Johansson in the lead role.

The accompanying press release adds, ‘Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Channing Tatum Up For Kingsman: The Golden Circle

April 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

channing-tatumThe casting news on Kingsman: The Golden Circle is coming thick and fast, with the latest being that Channing Tatum has signed on for the movie. He joins the returning Taron Egerton and Mark Strong, as well as newcomers Julianne Moore as the villain, Halle Berry as the CIA Chief and Pedro Pascal.

Just yesterday we reported that Elton John was in talks for the film, and there are strong hints that Colin Firth will be returning too.

There’s no news on exactly who Tatum will play, although the poster in the tweet which Channing used to announce the news (which you can see below) has many speculating that he will be part of the American version of Kingsman. While there are few plot details available, it is known that it will involve the British agents coming up against or working alongside the CIA. And if that’s who Tatum is playing, it would appear he’ll have a Southern drawl.

Shooting kicks off soon with Matthew Vaughn once more directing. It’ll be in cinemas next year. [Read more…]

Disney In Planning A Live-Action Peter Pan Movie

April 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peter-pan-disneyWith Disney developing or making live-action movies based on a vast array of their animated classics – the latest being the newly released The Jungle Book – it’s almost surprising they haven’t been developing a Peter Pan movie. The reason is likely that in the past few years various studios have been working on Neverland stories.

Now it seems as if Disney was waiting to see whether Joe Wright’s Pan would be a success, as now that has massively flopped, Deadline reports that the House Of Mouse is working on a Peter Pan live-action film. Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ David Lowery, who’s been working with Disney on a new version of Pete’s Dragon, will direct from a script by Toby Halbrooks.

Technically this is the second live-action Pan-based movie Disney is working on, as they’re also developing a Tinker Bell film with Reese Witherspoon attached to play the fairy. It’s now known if the plan if to link the two movies together in any way.
