Director: Maxime Desmons
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15

Quite often with indie films it’s easy to understand what the film is trying to do and applaud it for the effort, but the movie itself doesn’t actually achieve what it sets out to do. That’s the problem with What We Have, which works better in theory than practice.

Maurice is a Frenchman who has uprooted himself to a new life in a remote town in Northern Canada. He’s gone there to escape a past that haunts him, but despite his new surroundings, he finds it difficult to connect with the people he meets. He gets two jobs – one as an actor in French-language plays and the other tutoring a teenage boy who needs help with his foreign-languages. [Read more…]

Xenia (DVD Review)

April 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Kostas Nikouli, Nikos Gelia, Yannis Stankoglou, Aggelos Papadimitriou, Romanna Lobats
Director: Panos H. Koutras
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 11th 2016 (UK)

After the death of his mother, teenager Dany leaves Crete to visit his 17-year-old brother, Ody, in Athens. At first Ody isn’t happy to see his younger sibling, as he knows Dany has a penchant for causing trouble. He’s also dealing with the fact that as his mother was Albanian he’s not recognised as a Greek citizen and might be deported when he reaches 18.

That’s despite the fact they have a Greek father – who they refer to as ‘The Unspeakable’ – who ran out on them when they were little kids. Dany thinks this man may be the answer to their problems, as if they can find him they can prove they are half Greek (and therefore citizens) and perhaps get him to give them the money he should have been paying in child support. Boyd Holbrook In Talks To Be Wolverine 3’s Villain

April 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Boyd-HolbrookHugh Jackman has suggested that after the next Wolverine movie he’ll be done with the character (although he’s said that before), so if this is his swansong, you’d hope he’d have a good baddie to fight against. Now we may know who’ll be playing that villain, as Deadline reports that Narcos star Boyd Holbrook is in talks for the role.

Not a vast amount is known about who Holbrook will be playing, and there’s not too much point speculating as it appears that rather than finding someone from the comics, Holbrook will play an original character who’s causing Wolverine some trouble. However, it has been revealed he’ll be ‘a relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise’.

James Mangold will once more direct the movie, which is currently set for release March 2017. The movie will also see Patrick Stewart return as the older Professor Xavier.

Spider-Man Stand-alone Movie Will Include Other Marvel Characters

April 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-civil-war-spider-manIt surprised many when it was announced that Marvel and Sony had done a deal that would allows Spider-man to show up in Captain America: Civil War, as well as for Marvel to provide some creative direction for a new stand-alone Spidey movie. What wasn’t clear at the time was whether that would mean any of the Marvel universe character would show up in the Spider-man film.

Now it appears that they will, as EW reports that Marvel head honcho told them that while it will be a Sony movie, other Marvel characters are likely to appear too. He says, “[Spider-Man] is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth.”

However, there’s no news on what characters might show up.

Bringing Spider-man into the Marvel universe seems to be paying off, as in early reports from critics screenings of Civil War, Tom Holland’s take on the web-slinger has come in for particular praise. He’ll also play the character in the stand-alone film, planned for 2017, with Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. Jon Watts will direct.

Win The Great Transgender-Themed Tangerine On DVD!

April 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tangerine-dvd-coverFew films centring on transgender characters has had as much impact as Tangerine – after make a big splash at Sundance it won gongs at everything from the Deauville Film Festival to the Independent Spirit Awards. It’s also believed to be the first movie where a distributor actively campaigned for a transgender to be nominated for an Oscar, although sadly neither Mya Taylor nor Kitana Kiki Rodriguez got one.

Now Tangerine is out on DVD in the UK via Metrodome, and we’ve got three copies to give away.

It’s Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend (James Ransone) hasn’t been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, the working girl and her best friend, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumour. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity.

Director Sean Baker’s prior films (Starlet, Prince Of Broadway) brought rich texture and intimate detail to worlds seldom seen on film. Tangerine follows suit, bursting off the screen with energy and style. A decidedly modern Christmas tale told on the streets of L.A., Tangerine defies expectation at every turn.

You can read our review of the film here.

Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Dominic Cooper & More Get Warcraft: The Beginning Character Posters

April 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

warcraft-character-poster1-slideAfter a very long wait, the film version of Warcraft is almost upon us. The trailers we’ve had have tended to concentrate on the movie’s intricate fantasy world, so it’s worth releasing this new set of character posters, which introduce to some of the people and creatures we’ll get to meet.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another.  As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction.  From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

‘So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

‘Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and written by Charles Leavitt and Jones, the film starring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wu is a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production.’

The movie will be in cinemas on May 30th. [Read more…]

Bad Neighbours 2 Red Band Trailer – Seth Rogen and Zac Efron get a little more rude

April 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bad-neighbours-2-zac-efron-shirtlessOver the past couple of years, if there’s been Red Band trailer for a Zac Efron movie, you could pretty much guarantee it would feature him in a state of semi-undress at some point. Now we have one for Neighbours 2 which does offer some slow-motion Zac shirtlessness and tiny orange shorts, but it appears that Seth Rogen also wanted to show off his pecs (or lack thereof), as he’s equally topless.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Now that Mac (Set Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne) have a second baby on the way, they are ready to make the final move into adulthood: the suburbs.  But just as they thought they’d reclaimed the neighborhood and were safe to sell, they learn that the new occupants next door are a sorority even more out of control than Teddy (Zac Efron) and his brothers ever dreamed of being. Tired of their school’s sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox ladies of Kappa Nu have decided to start a house where they can do whatever the hell they want.

‘When Shelby (Chloe Moretz) and her sisters, Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the perfect place just off campus, they won’t let the fact that it’s located on a quiet street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw. Forced to turn to the one ex-neighbor with the skills to bring down the new Greeks next door, the Radners—alongside best friends Jimmy (Ike Barinholtz) and Paula (Carla Gallo)—bring in charismatic Teddy as their secret weapon.  If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas’ home.  But if they think that their neighbors are going down without a fight, they have severely underestimated the power of youthful ingenuity and straight-up crazy.’

It’ll be in cinemas in May. [Read more…]

Ryan Reynolds May Take On The Rosie Project

April 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ryan-reynolds-slideNot too long ago The Rosie Project looked like it was going to bring together the interesting duo of Jennifer Lawrence and Richard Linklater. However when she decided to make Darren Aronofsky’s next film, they both left the film behind.

However, Sony is still very keen on the film and it appears they may have found a new lead, as Variety reports that Ryan Reynolds is currently circling The Rosie Project. It doesn’t look like there’s a new director as yet though.

The film is based on the Graeme Simsion novel, which is about a socially awkward genetics professor [which is presumably Reynolds’ role], who devises a science-based survey to find the perfect mate – only to see those theories splintered when he meets the spontaneous Rosie Jarman, who possesses the opposite qualities. However, he becomes increasingly intrigued by Rosie’s quest to find her biological father.

It’s not clear when it might shoot.
