Final San Andreas Trailer Arrives – Dwayne Johnson takes on an earthquake

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

san-andreas-slide1After the terrible Earthquake in Nepal, it was quickly revealed that Warner Bros. was making changes to its marketing for the upcoming San Andreas, and that may be present here, as this new trailer lays on the pathos and horror of the situation far more than earlier promos, which invited us to enjoy the orgy of destruction.

It’ll be interesting to see which of these tones is closet to the actual movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.’

The movie will his UK cinemas May 28th. [Read more…]

Martin Freeman Joins Captain America: Civil War In A Mystery Role

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martin-FreemanWith his trip to the Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit over, Martin Freeman is heading in a different direction by signing up for Captain America: Civil War, according to an announcement by Marvel.

There’s no news though on who he might be playing, although I think it’s safe to say he won’t be a Halfling with hairy feet, or indeed the companion of a super-genius detective. There’s also no hint on whether his deal is just for a single movie, or if this will set up his character for further films, either on the side of good or of evil.

My bet would be the latter, especially with the recent news that Civil War will directly set up the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Another interesting possibility is that he could also appear in Doctor Strange, which would reunite him with his Sherlock co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch.

In the comics, the Civil War storyline centres around the Superhero Registration Act, which demands that those with super-human powers register themselves with and serve the US government. Steve Rogers is unimpressed by this and rebels against it, while Tony Stark (yep Robert Downey Jr. is back) thinks it’s a good idea. As a result the various heroes split into factions that ending up doing battle with one another.

The movie’s due out May 6th, 2016.

Independence Day 2 Adds A Female President In The Form Of Sela Ward

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sela-wardHillary Clinton may be bidding to be America’s first female president, but I’d be willing to bet that if she does win, she won’t have to fight any aliens. That’s not true for CSI: NY & House’s Sela Ward, who’ll be taking the POTUS role in Independence Day 2, according to Deadline.

We would say President Lanford be in residence at the White House, but seeing as that got blown up in the first movie, who knows if it’s been rebuilt. It’s also not clear how she fits into the story, although as Bill Pullman’s President Thomas J. Whitmore was a major force in Independece Day, she’ll probably have plenty to do in this one, especially as Pullman is returning for the sequel.

She joins fellow newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Travis Tope and Joey King, alongside returnees such as Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner. The film will see the invading aliens return, with the son of Will Smith’s character playing a major role this time around

Will Poulter Is ‘It’ In A New Take On Stephen King’s Horror Novel

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-poulterFor a while there’s been talk about a new film version of Stephen King’s It, with Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) attached to direct. Now it’s moved a little closer to the screen as Variety reports the movie has found its villainous Pennywise The Clown in the form of Will Poulter.

Although he’s a lot younger than Tim Curry was when he took on the role in the 80s (initially the new film intended to go older too, looking at the likes of Mark Rylance and Ben Mendelsohn), it’s a potentially smart move as Will has shown he can be funny, as in We’re The Millers, but is also getting buzz for his more dramatic, intense role in The Revenant.

The current plan is to make two movies, based on Kings book which follows, ‘a group of outcast kids who come together over summer break to take on the monster that’s haunting their town, battling their own personal monsters in the process.’

Filming will start this summer.

First Pic Of Andrew Garfield In Martin Scorsese’s Silence Arrives

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

silence-preview-pic1Martin Scorsese has been attached to Silence for years. However he kept putting it back, to the point where it briefly ended up in court as some of the backers felt he was essentially preventing it from actually getting made.

That was sorted out and Scorsese has now filmed the movie, based on Shusaku Endo’s novel. Set in the 17th Century, the story follows Father Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield), a Portuguese Jesuit priest who travels to Japan to confront his mentor, after rumours surface that he has abandoned the church. Ken Watanabe will portray Father Rodrigues’ Japanese interpreter, while Liam Neeson,Issei Ogata and Adam Driver also star.

The first picture from the movie has now arrived courtesy of EW, which shows Garfield getting rather intense. The release of the image marks the completion of filming, with the movie due in cinemas later this year.

The Surface (Review)

May 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Harry Hains, Michael Redford Carney, Nicholas McDonald
Director: Michael J. Saul
Running Time: 79 mins
Certificate: NR (US)

We’ve featured director Michael J. Saul’s work before, but previously it was with his short films such as Go Go Reject and Adults Only. Now he’s returned with a feature length film, The Surface, which is currently screening at festivals.

The movie follows Evan, who’s in a relationship with Chris, but still feels rootless and drifting. He finds a bunch of old home videos of an old man is selling in a yard sale, and is told he can return later to use some editing equipment if he wants to. When he does go back, he discovers that the elderly gent has died, but the man’s son, Peter, is happy for Evan to use the equipment.

After Evan puts together a student film using the old footage, he and Peter start to get closer, with Evan beginning to wonder whether this new man could bring him more happiness than Chris can.

The Last Five Years (DVD Review)

May 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Jeremy Jordan
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 4th 2015 (UK)

Normally movie musicals are set in a heightened reality, not just due to the fact that everyone is singing, but also because the universe itself is shifted to the side. Even something like West Side Story is obviously in a fantasy version of New York, several steps away from reality. However The Last Five Years takes a look at a very real story (indeed it’s based on a tumultuous marriage the musical’s writer, Jason Robert Brown, had when he was in his 20s), and sets it in a realistic New York.

Everyone may be singing and it may play with time in unusual ways, but the world and the characters are extremely grounded, with plenty that everyone will be able to recognise from their own relationships. [Read more…]

Take Your First Look At Will Smith, Jai Courtney & Co. In Costume For Suicide Squad

May 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photo2Suicide Squad has only just started shooting, but director David Ayer is taking a rather different tack with the film than the usual secrecy that surrounds superhero movies, as he’s keen to share pics. It makes sense as currently few non-comic book fans know much about it, even if they may have heard of some of the characters, so getting the word out early is going to help.

A few days ago Ayer posted the first pic of Jared Leto in full Joker make-up, and before that we got many of the cast gathered together for a table read. Now he’s given us a glance at the Suicide Squad in costume, all looking pretty rough and tough. Indeed, it took me a second glance to realise that it was Will Smith third from the right.

In the image from left to right there is Adam Beach as Slipknot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo.

While little has been released about the movie, the reason Leto isn’t there is that he’s the villain these guys are after. Most of them are bad guys themselves, who’ve all been locked up but are given a chance at redemption by teaming up for a mission none of them are expected to survive. That team becomes known as Task Force X.

Suicide Squad is due out August 2016.

LGBT Satire Wedlocked Seeks Funding To Take A Look At Gay Divorce Inequality

May 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wedlocked-creatorsIt’s a peculiar thing that in the US at the moment some gay couples have found themselves in the odd situation of being able to get married by going to a state which allows it, but then being unable to divorce.

The reason is normally that while gay marriage states will allow any couple to wed, they only handle the divorces of people who actually live there. If the couple is living in an anti-gay marriage state, most of those jurisdictions will not allow them to divorce, as despite their distaste for same sex couples getting wed, they view permitting the divorce as tacitly ackowledging that the state sees the initial marriage as being valid.

The short satire Wedlocked wants to take a look at this, with director Puppett (yes, that’s the name) commenting, “Wedlocked is a very personal story for me. I was engaged in early 2012, and my fiancé tried to convince me to elope with her in NYC, since New York had legalized gay marriage the year before. After our breakup in early 2013, I realized that had we eloped, we would have been stuck and unable to divorce until gay marriage was (re)legalized in California. Like many LGBT couples, I hadn’t considered all of the implications of getting married in a state where gay marriage was legal while living in a state where it was not.”

The film itself is described as ‘a farcical comedy that takes on the ridiculous laws governing gay divorce… Sydney and Cameron are a happily engaged couple looking forward to their big day. There’s one obstacle…Sydney is still married to Lisa and as their home state won’t recognize their marriage, a divorce is impossible! So let’s jump through all of the crazy legal hoops together with Sydney and Cameron and help bring attention to the (brand new) question…Are You Married Enough (To Get Divorced)?’

The short comes with a script by Guinevere Turner, writer of the classic Go Fish. However to get it made, it’s seeking $30,000 on Seed and Spark, and while it’s nearly at that target, it still needs you help. You can take a look at the pitch video below, and if you like what you see, head over to the crowdfunding page to help out. [Read more…]

First Look At Stephen Amell As Casey Jones In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2

May 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stephen-amell-ninja-turtles-spic1It was only a few weeks ago that Arrow’s Stephen Amell signed up to play Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, but he’s already on set and donned the characters iconics hockey mask, as proved by the first pic of him, as released by producer Michael Bay on Twitter.

Along with the hockey mask, Casey is carrying a hockey sticks, one of the weapons the vigilante character it known to use as he heads out onto the streets or New York to take on the scum.

Presumably as in the comics he’ll initially seem like a potential adversary for the Turtles, before teaming up with them, and also being a love interest for Megan Fox’s April O’Neil.

The film will arrive in cinemas June 2016.
