Inherent Vice (Cinema Review)

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Katherine Waterston, Martin Short
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 30th 2015

If you demand coherent plots and comprehensible dialogue from your movies, look away now. There is not one scene of Anderson’s sprawling behemoth of a movie that makes any sense whatsoever. It’s a stoned, fug-smoked, labyrinth of a film noir that takes pleasure in its baffling structure and dares you to go along with it. Frankly after an hour it’s too much effort, and the pleasure switches in watching great actors revelling in show-off roles soaked in dreamy Californian sunshine. [Read more…]

Geoffrey Rush & Stephen Fry Head For Biopic Of Gay Oliver Composer Lionel Bart

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lionel-bart-geoffrey-rushFor a while a biopic of Lionel Bart, the gay composer of the legendary musical Oliver!, has been in the works. Well now it’s moving towards the screen, under the title Consider Yourslef, with Deadline reporting that Geoffrey Rush has signed on to play the lead role, with Stephen Fry, Olivia Colman, Eddie Marsan, Matt Lucas and Michelle Dockery also onboard.

Of course, as Rush can’t really play Bart as a young man, Al Weaver will take that on.

Bart is an interesting figure – something he realised himself, as at one point he wrote a musical based on his own life – as he was born in 1930 into poverty as the youngest son of Galician Jews who’d escaped the pogroms against them in Central Europe (Bart’s original surname was Bergleiter). His parents treated him as a child prodigy and he built a small reputation as a painter. A teacher also told him mother and father he was a musical genius, however Bart never applied himself, so that even when he almost accidentally got into music as an adult (after his painting dreams didn’t pan out), he never learned to read or write musical notation.

He wrote a few revues and then found success penning pop songs, including Cliff Richard’s Living Doll, but he skyrocketed to the top of the British cultural scene with the massive success of Oliver!. Following that he became the first person ever to have three musical playing simultaneously in the West End. However he never managed to create another musical that was even close to being as successful Oliver!, and indeed after his initial success he lost huge amounts of money and made some rash business decisions – including selling his Oliver! rights for far less than they were worth – to keep some of his later, unsuccessful projects on the stage.

He had problems with drink, drugs and depressions and until his final years he also kept his sexuality hidden from the public, including being romantically linked by the media to the likes of Judy Garland and Alma Cogan despite having relationships with men in private. Despite his problems and lack of hits, throughout the 70s he was a major celebrity, which is what allowed him to mount his flop autobiographical musical, Lionel!, in 1977.

Bart died in 1999 following a long battle with cancer. Thankfully in his final years he did manage to find some success as well as benefiting from revivals of Oliver. He also became the subject of someone else’s musical play, It’s a Fine Life, in 2006.

It’s a real rags to riches story and now it’s being turned into the original musical film Consider Yourself by Elliot Davis (Loserville: The Musical), and choreographer Peter Darling (Billy Elliott: The Musical). Vadim Jean (Leon The Pig Father) is set to direct. The movie will be looking for deals at the Berlin Film Festival, with the hope of shooting later this year.

Why Did Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Cut A Gay Sex Scene From Good Will Hunting?

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-affleck-matt-damon-good-will-huntingThe finished version of Good Will Hunting wasn’t noted for its hot gay sex scenes, but that doesn’t mean they never existed! Indeed according to producer Harvey Weinstein, Matt Damon & Ben Affleck included one just to see who was paying attention.

While appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Weinstein told the host (via Mental Floss), “Everyone in Hollywood wanted Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and the film. In the meeting with them, I said ‘I only have one really big note on the script. About page 60, the two leads, both straight men, have a sex scene. What the hell is that?'”

It turns out though that it was included as a deliberate ploy, as the actors/writers told him, “That’s the scene we wrote to see if guys like you read the script, because every studio executive we went to hadn’t read it. You’re the only guy who brought it up, so you get the movie”.

Without any gay sex, the script went on to win Damon and Affleck the Best Original Screenplay Oscar, while the movie itself became a major hit, grossing over $200 million.

However I’m now kind of wishing I was a Hollywood executive, as I’d have told them I’d have made the movie, but only if they kept that scene in. Sure it wouldn’t have made any sense, but who the hell cares?

And just as an aside, isn’t it slightly disturbing how young Damon and Affleck look in the pic above?

terminator-genisys-new-pic1Although it’s only 40-seconds long, the SuperBowl spot for Terminator Genisys certainly puts the action to the fore, with explosions, somersaulting buses and general mayhem, along with a grey-haired Arnie showing that even cyborgs can get old.

Matthew McConaughey Will Be Born to Run

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-mcconaughey-magic-mikeMatthew McConaughey is getting his running shoes on – or actually he’s taking them off – as he’s joined the adaptation of Christopher McDougall’s bestselling non-fiction book, Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, according to Variety.

The book, ‘follows a journalist and often-injured runner who headed for Mexico’s Copper Canyons to find out how the Tarahumara Indians honed the ability to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury.’

McDougall begins to learn the secrets of the Indians barefoot running talents as he prepares to take part in a 50-mile race against the tribe and a number of American runners, including an ultra-marathoner, a young surfer and another barefoot running prodigy.

The book sold more than 2 million copies just in the US and helped spark a ‘barefoot’ running craze.

Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z) wrote the screenplay, although no director is involved at the moment.

Brad Pitt Reteaming With Angelina Jolie For Africa

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brad-pittIt appears the Pitt-Jolies and on a bit of a world tour, as having recently spent time in Europe with Angelina directing and co-starring alongside hubby Brad for the upcoming By The Sea, they’re now likely to head together to the Dark Continent as Pitt is in talks to star in Jolie’s Africa, according to TheWrap.

Brad would be a good fit for the lead role of real-life figure Richard Leakey, who’s perhaps best known internationally for his work as an paleoanthropologist, investigating and finding fossils from some of the earliest human ancestors. However the film is more interested in his work helping to rein in elephant and rhino poaching, which was threatening to ensure the animals’ extinction in only a few years. Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Forrest Gump, The Insider) has come up with the script.

Jolie previously commented, “I’ve felt a deep connection to Africa and its culture for much of my life, and was taken with Eric’s beautiful script about a man drawn into the violent conflict with elephant poachers who emerged with a deeper understanding of man’s footprint and a profound sense of responsibility for the world around him.”

Although nothing is set in stone, it appears they’re hoping to shoot Africa this summer.

Gay-Themed Short Film Johnny Seeks Funding For Its Tale Of A Young Prostitute & A Lonely Man

January 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-short-filmWe’re big fans of gay-themed short film here at BGPS and now a new one is seeking $10,000 in an IndieGogo crowdfunding drive to get the film made. The short is called Johnny, and it was written by and will star Brandon Crowder, who’s also set to star in another short that was recently looking for funding, Pick Up

Here’s the short’s synopsis: ‘A young male prostitute named Johnny (played by Brandon Crowder) is hired by Dave, a lonely and conflicted older man, to spend a night with him in a motel room and be his first sexual experience with another man.

‘Dave has spent his entire life trying to outrun his sexual attraction to other men. A devoted husband and father, Dave has carefully constructed a life he hoped would make him happy. But the harder Dave tries to force himself to be the man he believes he should be, the harder it is for him to resist becoming the man he’s secretly always been.

‘And as it turns out, Dave is not the only one with a secret, and the intimate night the two men share forces Johnny to come face-to-face with a haunting moment from his past that he thought he’d left behind.

‘JOHNNY is a story about finding the strength and courage that it takes to accept responsibility for the choices you have made and the person you have become.’ Micah Stuart will direct.

Crowder recently told Huffpo, “We live in an exciting time for LGBT stories being depicted on film, and great strides have been made in the prevalence of LGBT characters represented in mainstream media. Film in particular has an incredible ability to give an audience the opportunity to experience life from a perspective outside of their own reality. I want to share LGBTQ stories like JOHNNY in the hopes that I can contribute to a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of the complexity of the human experience.”

Cabaret Oscar Winner Joel Grey Comes Out As Gay At The Age Of 82

January 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joel-greyEver since he played the sexually ambiguous Master Of Ceremonies in Bob Fosse’s film version of Cabaret people have been assuming that actor Joel Grey was gay – despite the fact he was married and the father of Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer Grey.

However now, at the age of 82, he’s fully come to terms with his sexuality and outed himself in an interview with People, saying, “All the people close to me have known for years who I am. [Yet] it took time to embrace that other part of who I always was… I don’t like labels, but if you have to put a label on it, I’m a gay man.”

Grey says that from a young age, “I came to realize, along with being attracted to girls, I had similar feelings for boys.”

However he never really dealt with that side of himself until after being married for 24 years and having two children.

His daughter Jennifer added her support, saying, “I feel very happy for my dad that he has come to a point in his life where he feels safe and comfortable enough to declare himself in a public way as a gay man. Mostly because the more people are free to own their true nature and can hopefully come closer to love and accept themselves as they really are, no matter what age, no matter how long it takes, to finally be free of the lies or half truths, it is freedom.”

As well as his Oscar-winning role in Cabaret, Grey is very familiar for guest roles on endless TV shows, as well as appearing in Dancer In The Dark and having an extremely extensive theatre career.

Liam Hemsworth Wanted For Independence Day Sequel

January 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

liam-hemsworthAfter a very, very long time in development, the planned sequel to Independence Day is creeping towards production, and as proof they really intend to go ahead this time, The Wrap reports that Liam Hemsworth has been offered a major role in the movie.

The previously rumoured Michael B. Jordan is also still in the mix (while there’s been no confirmation, the speculation is that he’ll play the son of Will Smith’s character from the first film). Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are due to return for the film, which will shoot this year for release June 24, 2016.

There are no details on the plot, but it’s safe to say mankind will once more be threatened by aliens intent on humanity’s destruction. Emmerich has previously said, “The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years….It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.”
