Matt Bomer Reveals He Actually Married His Partner A Year Before He Came Out As Gay

April 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-bomer-2014-details2A couple of years ago Matt Bomer came out during a Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards speech when he thanked, “My beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.’

‘Simon’ is his longtime partner, publicist Simon Halls.

However what he didn’t mention at the time is that he and Simon actually tied the knot a year before his February 2012 speech. The fact is included in a new interview in Details magazine, which subtly mentions, ‘Bomer married his longtime partner, the Hollywood publicity executive Simon Halls, in 2011.’

They also have three sons: one of whom is eight, along with six-year-old twins.

Bomer is mainly talking to Details about the upcoming The Normal Heart, saying that Larry Kramer’s play had a profound effect on him growing up. He says as teenager, “I was clueless and obviously in a different place in relation to my sexuality. I was in romantic relationships with girls—whatever that means at 14. And it [The Normal Heart] completely rocked my world…It’s just an amazing call to arms.”

It ensured that when a film version finally started coming together he was keen to be part of it in any capacity, eventually landing the role of Felix Turner. You can watch The Normal Heart trailer here.

Take a look at a few pics from the great photoshoot accompanying the Details article below (click on them for larger versions), along with a video from the set (which also shows how much weight Bomer lost to play one of the early victims of AIDS).

Mean Girls & Bully Actor Daniel Franzese Comes Out As Gay

April 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Daniel-FranzeseDaniel Franzese became a familiar face in the early 2000s in the likes of Bully, Party Monster, War Of The Worlds and most notably as the wonderful Damian in Mean Girls.

However while Damian was proud of who he was (even if he hadn’t fully figured out his sexuality yet), Daniel himself stayed in the closet. Now the 35-year-old has decided it’s time to come out, writing an open letter on Indiewire to his Mean Girls character.

He says to Damian, “You were proud of who you were; I was an insecure actor.  You became an iconic character that people looked up to; I wished I’d had you as a role model when I was younger. I might’ve been easier to be gay growing up.

However he adds that, “When I was cast in the role of “Damian” in ‘Mean Girls,’ I was TERRIFIED to play this part.  But this was a natural and true representation of a gay teenager – a character we laughed with instead of at.”

However after the film came out he wasn’t so keen on the character, as he felt he’d been typecast and wasn’t even allowed to read for ‘butch’ roles. “Damian, you had ruined my life,” Daniel says, “And I was really pissed at you. I became celibate for a year and a half.  I didn’t go to any gay bars, have any flings and I lied to anyone who asked if I was gay.  I even brought a girl to the ‘Mean Girls’ premiere and kissed her on the red carpet, making her my unwitting beard.”

Now though, “Ten years later – looking back, it took YOU to teach me how to be proud of myself again. It’s okay if no one wants to sit at the table with the “art freaks.”  Being a queer artist is one of my favorite things about myself. I have always been different and that’s rad. People have always asked if I was really gay? While my reps usually lied to protect me. My friends and family all knew the truth but now it’s time everyone does. Perhaps this will help someone else.”

Franseze adds in a follow-up interview with TooFab, “I’m happy to be free and honest with myself and my fans. It feels like a backpack full of bricks has been lifted off of me. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and I urge anyone else in the industry who is contemplating doing this, to do it. It feels great.”

Kill Your Darlings (DVD)

April 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster, Michael C. Hall, Jack Huston
Director: John Krokidas
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 21st 2014 (UK)

When reading the press surrounding Kill Your Darlings, you could have been forgiven for thinking it was a movie all about Harry Potter having bum sex. Half the questions Daniel Radcliffe and director John Krokidas were asked seemed to be about the sex scene. However that’s only a very small part of the movie, and while Radcliffe does indeed get bummed, it’s merely part of a montage rather than anything with a big fanfare.

The movie is actually about some of the Beat generation writers and their brethren before they became well known, following one of the infamous events that helped shape who they were. Radcliffe plays Allen Ginsberg, who would go on to be the openly gay man behind the wonderful Howl. He heads to Columbia University, where he immediately riles against the college’s old fashioned attitude to literature and poetry. [Read more…]

Full The Normal Heart Trailer – Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Mark Ruffalo & Taylor Kitsch offer searing drama

April 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

We’ve had a few fairly short trailers for The Normal Heart, but now HBO has released a new one, which suggests this is going to be a dramatic and powerful adaptation of Larry Kramer’s seminal play.

It’s not going to pull any punches in its look at the early days of AIDS in New York, when the disease didn’t have a name and no one knew what it was that was suddenly striking down gay men. Inevitably people are already talking about which Emmys and Golden Globes it might win.

In the film Mark Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which later was called HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matt Bomer is Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover. Jonathan Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. Kramer later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

The rest of the world should get to see The Normal Heart shortly after its US HBO debut on May 25th. [Read more…]

Dustin Lance Black Angry After Leaked Gay Sex Photos Get Him Disinvited From Speaking At His Old College

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dustin-lance-blackThere’s a lot of confusion at the moment over why Milk screenwriter (and Tom Daley boyfriend) Dustin Lance Black has been disinvited from speaking at the Pasadena City College commencement ceremony, the institution he attended in the 1990s. It appears the official reason is due to the fact that a couple of years ago explicit photos of Black engaging in sex with another man leaked onto the internet, which could “tarnish the school’s reputation.”

However that’s not something that was unknown before the writer was invited, and there’s also some uncertainty over whether he’s been shunned because the photos showed unsafe sex, whether the school was worried Black speaking would somehow get linked to recent controversies at the college, or for some other reason.

It seems the official explanation is a mix of the nature of the photos and the recent controversies. Those embarrassments include one PCC lecturer admitting he slept with students and another who showed nude photos of himself to those he was teaching.

“With the porno professor and the sex scandals we’ve had on campus this last year, it just didn’t seem like the right time for Mr. Black to be the speaker,” Board President Anthony Fellow told the Pasadena City College Courier. “We’ll be on the radio and on television. We just don’t want to give PCC a bad name.”

That seems to have backfired horrifically, with many now wondering what on earth the fact Black once had consensual sex and pictures of it were leaked without his consent, have to do with the college’s issues with people abusing their position.

Student Trustee Simon Fraser, who made the initial invitation, has spoken out against the board’s actions, deeming them homophobic as ‘it was not viewed as intimate contact between two adults but as a promotion of unsafe sexual practices.’

“We are held to such a different standard where any single misstep is a bad thing,” said Fraser.

The whole situation has understandably made Black rather angry. After initially simply saying, “The offer was made. I accepted the offer, booked flights, cancelled work to make room for the honor. It is heartbreaking, hurtful and wrong headed,” he decided to write and open letter to PCC (via Out).

He says, ‘In 2009 a group of people surreptitiously lifted images from my ex’s computer and shopped them around to gossip sites in a money making scheme. These were old images from a far simpler time in my life, a time before digital camera phones and Internet scandals. They were photos of me with a man I cared for, a man who shared my Mormon background, and who was also struggling with who he was versus where he came from. And yes, we were doing what gay men do when they love and trust each other, we were having sex. I have never lied about my sexuality. If you invade my privacy, this is what you will find. I have sex. It brings me joy, fosters intimacy and helps love grow. I hope anyone reading this can say the same for themselves and for their parents.

‘In 2010 I took the perpetrators of this theft to Federal court and Judge R. Gary Klausner ruled unequivocally that the defendants had indeed broken the law. The details of this case are readily available for anyone to read — including PCC’s leadership and Board of Trustees.

‘In the eyes of anyone who has seen the devastating effects this trespass has had on me personally, creatively and professionally over these many years, in the eyes of my mother and friends who have held me as I’ve cried, and under the blind scrutiny of the law of this land, I am the victim of this “scandal,” not the perpetrator.

‘With this cruel act, PCC’s Administration is punishing the victim. And I ask you this: If I was a heterosexual man or woman with this same painful injury in my past, would PCC’s Administration still be rescinding such an honor?…

‘As PCC Administrators attempt to shame me, they are casting a shadow over all LGBT students at PCC. They are sending the message that LGBT students are to be held to a different standard, that there is something inherently shameful about who we are and how we love, and that no matter what we accomplish in our lives, we will never be worthy of PCC’s praise.’

Jersey Boys Trailer – Clint Eastwood brings the Broadway hit to the big screen

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Every time Clint Eastwood decides to make a music-based movie there seems to be surprise. His tough guy image makes people overlook that he’s a man with a love of jazz who’s actually made quite a few movies that could be classed as musicals, from Bird to Honkytonk Man.

However Jersey Boys is his first directorial outing based on a proved Broadway hit. And now we get our first look with a trailer and poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film tells the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons. The story of their trials and triumphs are accompanied by the songs that influenced a generation, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Dawn,” “Rag Doll,” “Bye Bye Baby,” “Who Loves You,” and many more.

‘These classic hits are now being embraced by a new generation of fans through the stage musical, which has been running on Broadway for more than eight years and has also enjoyed successful tours around the globe.

#Starring in the film, John Lloyd Young reprises his Tony Award-winning portrayal of the legendary lead singer of The Four Seasons, Frankie Valli. Erich Bergen stars as Bob Gaudio, who wrote or co-wrote all of the group’s biggest hits. Michael Lomenda and Vincent Piazza star respectively as Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito, two original members of The Four Seasons. Oscar® winner Christopher Walken (“The Deer Hunter”) stars as mobster Gyp DeCarlo.’

The film should be out in June. [Read more…]

Gay X-Men Director Bryan Singer Accused Of Raping Underage Boy

April 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singerDirector Bryan Singer has been hit with allegations that he raped a 17-year-old boy, used other force and forced him to inhale cocaine, in a lawsuit that’s been filed in Hawaii Federal Court.

The allegations have been made by Michael F. Egan III, who is now 31 but was 17 when he says the incidents took place in 1999. He claims that after moving to Los Angeles as a teenager to further his acting career, Singer and various other men sexually abused him as part of intimidation that unless he kept them happy they would ruin his career.

The abuse is said to have taken place in both Los Angeles and Hawaii, with X-Men and Usual Suspect helmer Singer said to be involved in event that took place on the latter. The lawsuit alleges, according to THR, that ‘Singer supplied Egan with drugs and alcohol, forced him to inhale cocaine, pushed Egan into a swimming pool, later held his head underwater, and repeatedly raped him. These were combined, the suit says, with threats, as well as with promises of employment by Singer.’

Other abuse supposedly took place at the the M & C Estate in Encino, California, whose residents were Marc Collins-Rector and Chad Shackley, whose younger brother, Scott Shackley, was in Egan’s high school class. It is said Collins-Rector sexually abused Egan and threatened him with a gun, although he’s not included as a defendant in the current case. (It should be noted that Collins-Rector is a registered sex offender, having pled guilty to transporting minors across state lines for sex).

Egan’s attorney, Jeff Herman, commented, “Hollywood has a problem with the sexual exploitation of children. This is the first of many cases I will be filing to give these victims a voice and to expose the issue.”

Singer’s attorney Marty Singer countered that, “The claims made against Bryan Singer are completely without merit. We are very confident that Bryan will be vindicated in this absurd and defamatory lawsuit.” Adding that, “It is obvious that this case was filed in an attempt to get publicity at the time when Bryan’ s new movie [X-Men: Days of Future Past] is about to open in a few weeks.”

The suit demands an unspecified amount of damages and asserts claims for intentional infliction of emotional distress, battery, assault and invasion of privacy by unreasonable intrusion.

The Great Gay-Themed Web Series EastSiders Launches Kickstarter Campaign To Fund Season 2

April 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Van Hansis Kit Williamson Eastsiders S2The web series Eastsiders found huge amounts of success, starting off on Youtube before getting picked up by Logo TV in the US. It also scored wins at both the Indie Series Awards and LA Web Fest. Now it’s planning Season 2 and it’s launched a Kickstarter to get the show funded.

Eastsiders stars Van Hansis (3 Daytime Emmy Nominee for As the World Turns) and Kit Williamson (Mad Men) as a gay couple trying to stay together in the aftermath of infidelity. Season 1 left things up in the air, so there’ll be a lot of people who’ll be keen to see what happens next.

Satya Bhabha (New Girl), Adam Bucci (10 Year Plan), Vera Miao (Best Friends Forever) and Willam Belli (Rupaul’s Drag Race) have signed on to join the cast, while Season 1 series regulars and guest stars Sean Maher (Firefly), Traci Lords (Crybaby), Stephen Guarino (Happy Endings), Brea Grant (Heroes), John Halbach (Wallflowers), Constance Wu (Browsers) and Matthew McKelligon (Int. Leather Bar) are slated to reprise their roles.

Series creator Kit Williamson says, “I’m so excited to take the show back where it started: in the fans’ hands, on Kickstarter. This is a very unique moment in time where audiences have the power to say what kind of stories they want to see told. We’ve been so lucky to have found an amazing community of viewers that have been with us from day one, and continues to grow every day. I hope they want to see more from us, because I am so excited to continue telling this story.”

There was a little controversy after the Season 1 Kickstarter, which successfully raised funds from people around the world who wanted to follow the story beyond the excellent pilot. However while the first episodes were initially released for free on Youtube, when the deal was signed with the US TV network Logo, only those in North America could watch the rest of the first season as it was released. An international deal was later signed with Wolfe Video to ensure those outside the US could see what happened (which was actually all collected together into a movie). It’s a lesson those behind the show learned and hopefully won’t be a similar issue with Season 2.

If you want to help out with Eastsiders – Season 2, head over to Kickstarter.

Gone Girl Trailer & Poster – Did Ben Affleck kill his wife in David Fincher’s movie?

April 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gone Girl is certainly an intriguing prospect. With David Fincher behind the camera, a twisting, turning plot based on a bestselling box and Ben Affleck in a role that may well fit him perfectly, it could be well worth watching.

Now we get our first proper taste with a trailer and teaser poster.

Affleck plays a husband whose wife (Rosamund Pike) goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. Inevitably the hubby becomes the primary suspect in her mysterious disappearance, with the signs of a struggle making many assume he has killed her, especially when reasons emerge as to why he might have wanted her out of the way. However, as we learn more about the couple’s relationship, things become much more complex than they first appear.

Fans of the book will be interested to know how they’re going to handle telling the story in the movie version, as one of the main keys to the novel is that half of it is told in the present by the husband, with the other half being the wife’s diary’s. It’s a structure that allows it to go to unexpected places, and it’ll be fascinating to see how Fincher handles that on screen.

The film is due out autumn 2014. [Read more…]
