Julia Roberts Wants A Second Act

December 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

She’s currently busy being a Wicked Witch in the Snow White movie Mirror Mirror (which is out next March), and now she’s planning for the future, as THR reports that she’s set to produce and star in New Regency’s workplace comedy, Second Act.

The movie is about a woman who has never worked before and is forced to take a job. Presumably there are hilarious results (well, hopefully they’ll at least be mildly amusing results).

It’s early days as the project doesn’t currently have a writer or director, so Roberts won’t be shooting the film anytime soon. However she’s definitely increasing her work rate after taking some time off following the birth of her children.

Peter Cattaneo May Have Bridget Jones’ Baby

December 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Peter Cattaneo scored a gargantuan hit with The Full Monty in 1997, but he hasn’t exactly managed to follow it up with any other successful movies. Indeed his most recent credits are directing episodes of the TV series Rev. However now Deadline reports that Cattaneo is in talks to take on the third Bridget Jones movie, after director Paul Fieg bailed on the project in October.

It also appears the film will be called Bridget Jones’ Baby, which seems to fall in line with statements made by Colin Firth in August when he said, “I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can’t have children, I think that’s the way it goes on. So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver [Hugh Grant’s character] for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she’s left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?”

There’s been no confirmation this is the plot (hopefully not as it seems rather contrived), but getting Bridget to have a baby does seem the logical next step for the series. Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, and Hugh Grant and all expected for the sequel. While this installment won’t be based on a Helen Fielding book, she has been helping out with the screenplay, alongside Paul Feig and David Nicholls.

Bale Bails Out Of Noah, But Fassbender May Be In

December 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Back in June it was revealed that director Darren Aronofsky wanted Christian Bale to star in his Biblical epic Noah, although since then we haven’t heard much more about casting on the movie. However, now Deadline reports that Christian Bale has passed on the movie, while Variety adds that Michael Fassbender is being eyed to star.

It seems Fassbender hasn’t officially been offered the role yet, although he has discussed the project with Darren Aronofsky. A space has opened up in Fassbender’s diary as while he was in talks to star in Londongrad, that project has been severely delayed, due to director Rupert Wyatt having to concentrate on another Planet of The Apes movie before he can shoot anything else.

With financing now in place, the plan is to start shooting Noah next Spring, although they’ll need to get the title character cast well before then.

Alice Eve Added To Star Trek 2

December 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Things are finally moving on apace with Star Trek 2, and the latest news, via Variety, is that actress Alice Eve is in talks to join the cast for director J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures. The She’s Out Of My League actress doesn’t have a deal set yet, although it is expected to be finalised very soon. Teresa Palmer and Hayley Atwell also apparently tested for the role.

This being JJ Abrams, no details have been released regarding who Alice Eve may play, but it is said to be a brand new character in the Star Trek universe. Earlier this month Benicio Del Toro was offered the villain role in this sci-fi sequel, although again it’s not known what character he’ll play. It now seems the actor has accepted the offer, although a deal is still pending.

Filming is scheduled to start January 15.

Hammer Films Plans Boneshaker

December 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Since coming back from the dead, Hammer Films has been involved in movies ranging from the cheap and less than cheerful (Beyond The Rave), to the dark and intriguing (Let Me In, The Woman In Black), and now they’re going a little bit steampunk, as it’s been announced they’ve acquired the rights to the novel Boneshaker by Cherie Priest for adaptation to the big screen. The film will be co-produced by Hammer and Cross Creek Pictures.

John Hilary Shepherd is writing the screenplay, which incorporates futuristic innovations into a Victorian setting. Priest’s novel is set in an alternate version of 1880s Seattle, where the city has been walled in and a toxic gas has turned many of its remaining residents into ‘Rotters,’ more commonly known as zombies. A young widow hunts for her teen son in the Seattle underworld, while dealing with airship pirates, a criminal overlord and heavily armed refugees.

Boneshaker was nominated for a 2010 Hugo Award for Best Novel, and won the 2010 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. The novel, published in 2009 by Tor Books, is the first in a series set in the same Civil War-period, alternate-world that Priest has dubbed ‘The Clockwork Century’. So if the first film does well, there’s plenty of room for a franchise.

Amazing Spider-man Lizard Concept Art Surfaces

December 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For quite a long time we’ve known The Lizard would be making an appearance in The Amazing Spider-man, but we haven’t had much clue as to what he’d look like. That’s slightly changed in the last few days after pics emerged of what appears to be a Lizard Pez Dispenser tied into the movie, and now the Russian site, Spidermedia.ru, has managed to get hold of what seems to be concept art of the villain. Assuming it’s corrent, it’s certainly a good mix of man and reptile!

Rhys Ifans is playing Dr. Curt Connor, who turns into The Lizard, and the film hits cinemas July 4th, 2012.

New John Carter Trailer – Taylor Kitsch enters a Martian world

November 30, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Video: John Carter trailer (MSN Exclusive)After a rather fuzzy, watermarked version arrived yesterday afternoon, the full, proper John Carter trailer has arrived, and it’s likely to get people a lot more excited that they might have thought. The first teaser made the film look a little cheesy, but this trailer is a whole new ball game, with a much more interesting, fully realised Martian world. Here’s the synopsis: ‘
John Carter tells the tale of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly involved in a conflict of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet. John Carter – the newest movie from Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton is an action adventure story set on Barsoom, the exotic and mysterious planet we know as Mars. Based on the classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan, John Carter is the story which inspired many of the most imaginative and well known Hollywood movies, past and present. Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the John Carter character, first created in the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel.’ It arrives in cinemas March 9th.

The Thing (Cinema)

November 30, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen
Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 2nd, 2011

From the second it was announced a film was in the pipeline that was somehow related to John Carpenter’s 1982 movie, The Thing, there’s been much grumbling from fans. However this is a slightly unusual case, as while Carpenter fans have been predictably wary of anything tampering with a classic they love, the early 80s film was actually a remake itself, of the 1951 movie The Thing From Another World. As a result it’s tougher to argue here that things from the past should be preserved in aspic and never touched.

What we have here though isn’t a straight remake, but (as the movie studio insists on calling it) a ‘prelude’ to the Kurt Russell movie. Quite why they gave it the exact same name as the other film is a bit of a mystery then, but it just goes to show some of the muddle-headed business-butting-up-against-entertainment thinking that went into the new The Thing. Starring: Alex Anthony, Conner McKenzy, Jessica Matthews
Director: Darren Flaxstone, Christian Martin
Running Time: 80 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: December 5th, 2011

Bristol wouldn’t spring to most people’s minds as a hotspot of gay cinema, but it’s been getting that way in the last few years thanks to a bunch of dedicated guys who between them have brought us the likes of Shank, Release and now Buffering.

Seb (Alex Anthony) and Aaron (Conner McKenzy) are two young gay guys trying to live out a suburban idyll in their own house full of the domestic niceties. However the recession has hit and unbeknownst to Seb, Aaron has lost his job and they’re way behind on the mortgage. It’s gotten to the point where there’s only a short time to sort things out before the bank comes and takes their home. Things are compounded when Seb loses his job as well. [Read more…]

LGBT Films Already Staking A Claim For Awards Honours

November 30, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The movie awards season is open, with the first gongs being handed out as the film industry starts the long run-up to the Oscars in February. LGBT films are already off to a great start, with the 21st annual Gotham Independent Awards making the surprise choice of handing the Best Picture award to Beginners, in a tie with The Tree Of Life.

The movie, about an older man (Christopher Plummer) who comes out as gay after the death of his wife, and how that affects his family, was also given the Best Ensemble Performance Award.

Pariah, a powerful drama about a black lesbian teenager struggling with coming out to her family, saw helmer Dee Rees named Breakthrough Director.

LGBT movies also made a decent showing in the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards, which were announced yesterday, with Beginners picking up four nominations (Best Feature, Director, Screenplay, Supporting Actor), Pariah two (Best low budget first feature, Best Lead Performance), and one nomination apiece for Circumstance, Gun Hill Road and the AIDS documentary, We Were Here.

There was some surprise though that Glenn Close didn’t get a nomination for Albert Nobbs, in which she plays a woman living as a man in 19th Century Ireland, although Janet McTeer was recognised in the Best Supporting Performance category. However, many are still tipping Close for an Oscar nom.

While these early awards have focussed on independent movies, it’s thought Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar may also pick up some nominations in the more mainstream awards.

The Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out on February 25th, the day before the Oscars.

Many FBI Agents Upset At Claims In New Film That J. Edgar Hoover Was Gay

November 30, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

By now you’ve probably heard about Clint Eastwood’s new movie, J. Edgar, which sees Leonardo DiCaprio playing FBI founder and longtime chief J. Edgar Hoover. The film also deals with rumours that he was a repressed homosexual. With the film recently released in the US, it’s now time for those who can’t stand the idea that anyone they admire might have been gay to step forward and get indignant.

The Washington Post has an interesting article about current and former FBI agents who are up in arms about the movie. Perhaps most interesting is how upset they seem, even though the film doesn’t paint Hoover as living a full-on gay life, just that he may have been a repressed homosexual, whose incredibly close but probably non-sexual relationship with Clyde Tolson may have been based in genuine love.

Former agent Gregg Schwarz apparently felt so strongly he went as far as to hire a videographer to help him make a Youtube response to the movie, filmed next to Hoover’s grave. In the video, titled ‘Dirty Harry To Filthy Harry’, he says, “Mr. Hoover was portrayed as an individual who had homosexual tendencies and was a tyrannical monster. That is simply not true.”

Most of the ire is said to come from agents who started their career when Hoover was still at the agency and who still revere him. Even so, the anger many have shown does seem extreme, as the movie doesn’t actually go all that much further than the historical record shows, with its main speculation being that Hoover and Tolson really loved one another, not that they conducted a massive, sex-filled ilicit affair..

Hoover’s admirer have put him on a pedestal and while they like to proclaim about ‘facts’, they don’t seem to realise that their interpretation of the known ‘facts’ about Hoover, is just that, an interpretation. Eastwood may not have got it 100% right, but it’s a far less sensationalistic portrayal than you might have expected from Hollywood. Either way, head over to the Washington Post as the article is quite interesting.

Daniel Radcliffe May Play Allen Ginsberg

November 30, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Although it doesn’t look like anything’s completely firmed up yet, it appears Daniel Radcliffe is eyeing a role as famed beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, according to Twitch. The film is a thriller that speculated around events involving beat generation legends, Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S Burroughs.

They were all brought together by Columbia University student Lucien Carr, who was implicated in (and served time for) the murder of David Kammerer, who was found dead in Hudson River in 1944. The events surrounding the death are said to have had a massive impact on the beat circle, and tempered the idealism they had felt beforehand.

When the film was first announced in 2009, Chris Evans, Jesse Eisenberg and Ben Whishaw were attached to play Kerouac, Ginsberg and Carr, respectively. It’s unknown if Evans or Whishaw are still involved at all, but it seems Radcliffe has taken over Eisenberg’s part. If Daniel does take on the gay poet, he’ll follow in the footsteps of James Franco, who played Ginsberg in Howl.

John Krokidas will direct with hopes that shooting will start next summer.
