Holding The Man (Cinema Review)

June 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Anthony LaPaglia, Craig Stott, Guy Pearce, Kerry Fox, Ryan Corr
Director: Neil Armfield
Running Time: 127 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 3rd 2016 (UK)

Holding The Man is evidence, if it were needed, of how difficult it is for gay-themed movies to crossover into the mainstream. Despite glowing reviews and a cast including Aussie luminaries such as Guy Pearce, Anthony LaPaglia and (briefly) Geoffrey Rush, as well as Kerry Fox (who’s actually a New Zealander), the movie has largely managed to fly under the radar, and a year on from its Australian debut it’s still waiting for a US release date.

However, it’s now arrived in the UK thanks to Peccadillo Pictures. Based on Tim Conigrave’s bestselling memoir, the film covers a roughly 15-year period, starting in the mid-70s when Tim (Ryan Corr) is in a Catholic high school and first begins hanging out with his crush, John (Craig Scott). It doesn’t take them long before they admit that they like each more than just friends. Inevitably their teenage love faces obstacles when the school and then their parents discover what is going on. Bill Skarsgard Will Be Pennywise The Clown In Stephen King’s It Reboot

June 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bill-skarsgardAs with other planned new adaptations of Stephen King novels, such as The Dark Tower and The Stand, a film based on his classic ‘It’ has had a rather on-again, off-again history. Now though it’s back on again, but it’s a different incarnation from the two-part one being planned in 2015 with Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) directing and Will Poulter as the evil Pennywise the Clown.

However, they are keeping with a young Pennywise, as THR reports that Bill Skarsgard – brother of Alexander and star of Hemlock Grove – is attached to play the role. There’s also been a change of directors, with ‘Mama’ helmer Andy Muschietti now set to helm.

King’s novel follows a group of kids called the Losers Club that encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favourite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise (famously played by Tim Curry in a 1990 two-part TV version). When the creature resurfaces years later, the now-grown kids are called upon to regroup again, this time as adults, even though they have no memory of the first battle.

The plan is still to make it as two movies, with the first showing what happened to the Losers Club as kids, with the second showing their interactions with Pennywise as grown-ups.

Jake Gyllenhaal To Star In The Division Videogame Adaptation

June 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jake-GyllenhaalPerhaps Jake Gyllenhaal feels he’s got some unfinished business with videogame-to-movie adaptations, as he’s signed up to star in another one. Last time he took on an Ubisoft game, with Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time, it turned out to be one of the biggest box of flops of all time. Now he’s hoping to have more luck with a movie based on Tom Clancy’s The Division, according to Variety.

The game is a ‘the third-person shooter is set in a dystopian New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic. The player, who is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply “The Division,” is tasked with helping to rebuild the Division’s operations in Manhattan, investigating the nature of the outbreak and combating criminal activity in its wake.’

Ubisoft must think they’ve got a good chance with a movie version, as the game is their fastest selling title of all time, reportedly shifting $330 million worth of copies in just five days. It is part of the company’s attempts to turn the reputation of videogame-to-movie titles around, with high-profile films such as Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender and Splinter Cell starring Tom Hardy also in the works.

At the moment, the plans for The Division are in the early stages, with Ubisoft currently looking for a writer for the movie.

Oscar-Winner Brie Larson In Early Talks To Play Captain Marvel

June 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brie-larsonThere’s been a fair amount of criticism of Marvel Studios for the fact it’s largely concentrated on male superheroes, while refusing to give even popular female characters, such as Black Widow, a movie of her own (Agent Carter got her own TV show, but that didn’t happen until Marvel was almost forced to see the potential, and it certainly wasn’t in cinemas). However, they are planning to at least slightly redress the balance with Captain Marvel.

Different incarnations of the character have been both male and female in the comics, but for the movies they are concentrating on ‘Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight.’

Danvers has been part of The Avengers in the comics, and so should be a good fit as Marvel prepares for a future when the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth may want to leave the cinematic universe.

Now it seems the studio has found the person they want to play the title character, with THR reporting that Oscar-winning Room actress Brie Larson is in early talks for the role. It’s unclear at the moment how likely it is she will sign on, and it may depend on who the director is, as it appears Marvel is keen to find a female lenser as quickly as they can, with the likes of Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) being near the top of the list.

Captain Marvel is die out March 2019.

Go-Go Boy Interrupted S2 Ep9 – Danny remembers how he told his high school girlfriend he was gay

June 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

go-go-boy-interrupted-s2-ep9Before many of us knew we were gay (or at least before we were ready to admit it), we dated someone of the opposite gender. While some of those relationships ended before we had to tell them who we truly were, in other cases there had to be a rather awkward conversation.

In the latest episode of Go-Go Boy Interrupted, Danny (Jimmy Fowlie) gets to reminisce about his high school days when his ex-girlfriend Ashley comes to visit, including his remembrances of when he told her he was gay. It’s also an opportunity for the likes of Willam Belli, Drew Droege and Brian Jordan Alvarez to make welcome reappearances in the popular web series.

Take a look at the new episode of Go-Go Boy Interrupted below. And if you need to catch up with earlier episodes of Go-Go Boy Interrupted, you can click here to find them. [Read more…]

Want To Own Zac Efron’s Used Jock Strap & Its ‘Assorted Stains’?

June 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

dirty-grandpa-wax-efronSelling used underwear is a surprisingly big thing, so big that there even assurance schemes that those selling their undies can sign up to, to help convince their customers that they’re trustworthy enough to send out genuine items they’ve really worn. Yep, there are people out there

While most of us can’t really imagine paying cash for another person’s underwear, used celebrity undies are a whole different ballgame. Now, should you have deep pockets, you have the opportunity to bid on something that has probably touched Zac Efron’s penis. Face it, it’s the closest you’re ever going to get, so if it’s important to you to be as close as you can to the buff movie star, this is your opportunity.

In the movie Dirty Grandpa, Efron’s Hornet jockstrap/g-string plays an oddly central role, first helping Zac get into the party spirit (and smoke meth), before getting him in major trouble with the police on the beach. Now it could be yours!

It’s one of a hundred props from the movie being auctioned off, with the original promise that the item includes ‘assorted stains from use during production but remains in good condition’. However, after realising the idea of assorted Efron stains was getting a lot of attention, they’ve since altered it to read that is ‘shows minor wear and dirt stains from storage after filming, but remains in good condition’.

The current bid is $200, so if something that been that close to Efron is important to you, get bidding! [Read more…]

Monster Trucks Trailer – Or at least a monster in a truck, with Lucas Till

June 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

monster-trucks-slideI think it’s likely the title for this movie came before any idea about the plot, which may explain why the trailer suggests this is gonna be a bit of an odd movie. Not necessarily a bad one, but an odd one.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp (Lucas Till), a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend.

‘Melding cutting edge visual effects and state-of-the-art CGI, Monster Trucks is an action filled adventure for the whole family that will keep you on the edge of your seat and ultimately touch your heart.’

Ice Age’s Chris Wedge directs the movie, which will be in cinemas February 2017. Take a look at the first trailer below. [Read more…]

HOTB_2D_BLUTo celebrate the release of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES – on Blu-ray (for the first time!), DVD, EST and DVD/Book gift set 30th May – we are giving away a copy on Blu-ray.

The classic 1939 Sherlock Holmes mystery starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce is one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous and entertainingly macabre Sherlock Holmes stories.

#LGBTSuperheroes Trailer – Those with powers get the gay treatment they deserve

May 31, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lgbtqsuperheroes-slideOver the past few years, filmmaker Mike Buonaiuto has been making LGBT-themed project with a bit of a conscience to them, such as Homecoming, which used military men coming home to talk about equal marriage, and Invisible Parents, which highlighted inequality for gay families in Europe. More recently there was his acclaimed short Credence, which helped to show that screen sci-fi can successfully be made about gay people and stories.

Now he’s back doing a similar thing for superheroes. In the comic books, numerous characters are, or have been portrayed at various times as, LGBT, such as Iceman, Mystique and Catwoman. However, on-screen they and their superhero brethren have always been straight. #LGBTSuperheroes, which has just launched its trailer, sets out to redress the balance somewhat.

As Mike says in the press release, “The project highlights the lack of LGBT superheroes in film after #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend trended on Twitter last week. But more concerning – the fact that characters who appear as LGBT in comics then become de-sexualised or turn heterosexual once the movie hits the big screen… As a response, the trailer calls for studios such as Marvel and DC to include diverse characters in their films and give LGBT kids a hero they can look up to.”

Take a look below. [Read more…]

Does A Famous Director’s Penis Appear In Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping?

May 31, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

judd-apatowJudd Apatow is the director behind the likes of Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Trainwreck. However, if Akiva Shaffer is to be believed, he’s also been doing a bit of work in front of the camera – or at least his penis has.

Lonely Island’s comedy film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping hits cinemas shortly and features a scene in a limo with Andy Samberg as music star Conner4Real. When the window is rolled down, a dick suddenly appears, as a male fan wants to get the hop hop star to sign it. While we never see who the bits belong to, they apparently have a fairly extended cameo (at least for a mainstream movie, where the sight of cock is pretty much verboten).

So whose bits are they? It’s not clear if he is joking or not, but writer/director/star Akiva Shaffer says it’s Apatow’s (who is a producer on Popstar). Akiva told Billboard, “It’s actually his d–k in the window of the car. He wanted to show it because he was like, ‘I’ve had this normal but really well-proportioned dick my whole life, and I’ve never shown it. And I’m afraid I’m getting older and going to lose the bod soon.’”

It is really his? You’ll have to head to the cinema and decide for yourself.
