Suicide Squad First Look Trailer – The DC Comics bad guys get a shot at redemption

July 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photo2-slideWhile it’s a safe bet Batman v Superman will do good business, 2015’s other major DC Comics adaptation, Suicide Squad, is a more uncertain proposition. It’s not surprising then that the film wanted to use Comic Con to introduce the world to the movie and they’ve now released the first look trailer for us all to see.

It’s certainly a potentially cool one, with a very detailed and different kind of comic book world to the one we’re used to – and the trailer also seems keen to silence those who’d already pre-judged Jared Leto as being wrong for The Joker.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An all-star roster of actors has joined new action adventure Suicide Squad, bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (“Fury”).

‘The film will star two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Ali,” “Focus”) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman (“Run All Night”, “Robocop”) as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus,” upcoming the “Tarzan” movie) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Alexander”) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” “The Water Diviner”) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina,” upcoming “Pan”) as Enchantress.

‘Ayer is also writing the script for Suicide Squad, which is being produced by Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) and Richard Suckle (“American Hustle”). Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are serving as executive producers.’

The film will be in cinemas August 2016. [Read more…]

Boys On Film 13: Trick & Treat (DVD Review)

July 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jody Latham, Liam Boyle
Director: Various
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: July 13th 2015 (UK)

The Boys On Film collection of gay-themed short films has proved far more successful than you would expect – after all, shorts on DVD have rarely found an audience. However, thanks to the quality of the films it’s now on its 13th instalment, but that doesn’t mean this one is unlucky. So what does it have in store amongst its 10 shorts? Take a look below to find out more.

And you can see what we think of other Boys On Film releases here.

Surprise – dir. Leslie Bumgarner (Canada) 9 mins 2015
Teenager Jack’s mother wants to talk to him about something. It soon becomes clear there’s something pressing she wants to get off her chest, but she isn’t sure whether Jack will understand the evolution she’s going through – especially as he’s got something rather different he needs to reveal. Surprise is a sweet and simple film that captures the dynamic between a mother and teenage child who love each other but exist on slightly different wavelengths. It also has a great ending which is likely to leave a smile on your face (as long as you’re not too shocked by naughty words). [Read more…]

Do I Sound Gay? (US Cinema Review)

July 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Thorpe, George Takei, Tim Gunn, Dan Savage, Dave Sedaris
Director: David Thorpe
Running Time: 77 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: July 13th 2015 (Outfest), July 17th 2015 (US)

I’ve always been slightly fascinated by the idea of ‘sounding gay’ and where it comes from. Is it something innate in certain people, an affectation, or a way of bonding (perhaps a hangover from the feeling gay men had of their other-ness when they were more rejected by society and internalised the idea of homosexuality amongst men making them innately feminine)?

My interest stems from two experiences, the first when I was only about seven or eight and a young boy started at school who we all thought was like a girl – and for all I know, perhaps inside he was. He only ever wanted to play My Little Pony, begged his mother to pierce his ears (so he could wear faux-diamond studs) and spoke with a feminine quality. At the time we didn’t have the words to express what made him ‘different’, but looking back there is no doubt that even if he was only about five-years-old, he sounded gay and was rather camp. Gay Short Film Showcase: El SMS – Dustin Lance Black directs a film about life as a gay teen

July 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

el-smsWhen he’s not making people jealous by dating Tom Daley or campaigning for LGBT right, Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is still very active in the world of film, and that include teaming up with Coca-Cola to direct the short film, El SMS.

Made as part of that drinks company’s Latin American ‘Crossroads’ campaign, the short is all about a gay teenager and the decision his friend has to make when he discovers that fact.

Although some might rile at the corporate connections it’s actually a rather sweet and charming film that’s worth a look whether it’s linked to fizzy drinks or not. You can watch the film below (although you may need to switch on subtitles).

Melissa McCarthy & Kirsten Wiig Strap On The Proton Packs In The First Official Ghostbusters Reboot Pic

July 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ghostbusters-reboot-pic1Are you only allowed the bust ghosts in single gender groups? In the 1980s it was all men and now the series is getting rebooted with a female team of Ghostbusters – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

The odd thing is that while it’s a different team and they’re all women, in this first official pic the whole thing looks very familiar, with similar costumes, the iconic Ghostbusters car, the logo and proton packs.

Director Paul Feig tweeted the first pic of the ladies in costume.

Although not many plot details have been released it’s believed McCarthy and Wiig play women who wrote a book all about how ghosts are real. However that later gets Wiig laughed out of her university job, leading her to reluctantly team with McCarthy, McKinnon and Jones to take on spooks that invade Manhattan.

It’s due out next year.

Jennifer Lawrence Up For The Rosie Project

July 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

jennifer-lawrenceWith her Hunger Games and X-Men duties nearly wrapped up (unless she signs up for more, of course), Jennifer Lawrence is a free agent and has been lining up a variety of projects to star in. Now she’s got another, with Variety reporting she’s set to appear in The Rosie Project.

The film is ‘based on the Graeme Simsion novel, [and] centers on a socially awkward genetics professor who devises a science-based survey to find the perfect mate – only to see those theories splintered when he meets the spontaneous Rosie Jarman, who possesses the opposite qualities. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, who teamed on ‘(500) Days of Summer,’ have revised Simsion’s adaptation of the novel.’

In the book the scientist has a 16-page survey to help him find his wife – something that understandably makes women a little wary of him. However he becomes intrigued by Rosie’s quest to find her biological father.

A director is currently being sought (Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were attached, but have dropped out to concentrate on the recently confirmed Han Solo origins Star Wars movie).
