First Poster Of Ian McKellen In Mr. Holmes Emerges, & He’s Looking Pretty Cool

February 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mr-holmes-poster1Earlier this week the first clip from the upcoming Mr. Holmes, starring Ian McKellen, emerged, and now it’s been followed by a rather cool poster. It is slightly different though as while the clip showed McKellen’s aged Sherlock Holmes as a bit of a doddery old man, in the poster he’s looking extremely poised and dapper.

Mr. Holmes is based on Mitch Culin’s novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind. Here’s the synopsis: ‘England in 1947. The famous detective Sherlock Holmes, now 93 years old, lives in his Sussex country house. When he goes to the cinema and sees a film about himself, he mostly shakes his head. For much of what he is purported to have done in the heroic stories has simply been made up. He never wore the legendary hat and, rather than the pipe, he always preferred a cigarette. Long since retired, he steers clear of people and dedicates himself chiefly to bee-keeping. The only people he suffers to be around him are housekeeper Mrs Munro and her small son Roger, whom Holmes is initiating into the secrets of apiculture. But sometimes his thoughts are beset by old cases. What really went on with the mysterious Ann Kelmot, whom he shadowed at her husband’s behest? And what connects him to the Umezaki family, who have invited him to Japan? Holmes undertakes one final big journey, experiences a botanical miracle and resolves to tell a compassionate lie …’

Bill Condon directs. Expect to see in in cinemas later this year.

First Look At Tom Hiddleston In Ben Wheatley’s High Rise

February 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom-Hiddleston-High-RiseI’d almost forgotten about High Rise, but to remind me the first picture from the movie has arrives, via Empire, showing Tom Hiddleston looking rather moody in an elevator.

The film comes from A Field In England and Sightseers director Ben Wheatley, based on J.G. Ballard’s dystopian novel.

One of the more interesting things is that while there’s been a lot of interest by movie types in the novel over the years, many considered it unfilmable. However now it’s in the can, with Hiddleston starring alongside starring alongside the likes of Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, James Purefoy, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘High-Rise centers on a new residential tower built on the eve of Thatcher’s England, at the site of what will soon become the world’s financial hub. Designed as a luxurious solution to the problems of the city, it is a world apart.

‘Enter Robert Laing (Hiddleston), a young doctor seduced by the high-rise and its creator, the visionary architect Anthony Royal (Irons). Laing discovers a world of complex loyalties, and also strikes up a relationship with Royal’s devoted aide Charlotte (Miller).

‘But rot has set in beneath the flawless surface. Sensing discord amongst the tenants, Laing meets Wilder, a charismatic provocateur bent on inciting the situation. Wilder initiates Laing into the hidden life of the high-rise and Laing is shocked at what he sees.

‘As the residents break into tribal factions, Laing finds himself in the middle of mounting violence. Violence that he also finds emerging in himself’

It should be in cinemas later this year.

Brad Pitt & Robert Zemeckis Teaming For Romantic Thriller

February 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brad-pittIt’s always slightly frustrating when a new film is announced but they don’t bother to tell you what it’s about. It happens a lot and now we’ve got another one, as it’s been revealed the Brad Pitt is set to star in a new film from director Robert director.

However on the plot side, the only thing know is that it’s described as an ‘epic story’, and a ‘sweeping romantic thriller’. Rumours suggest it will be set during World War II, although that hasn’t been confirmed (it would make sense though, as Pitt does seem to like WWII films).

Steven Knight will write the script, which bodes well as he’s the man behind Dirty Pretty Things, Locke, Eastern Promises and The Hundred-Foot Journey.

Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt In Talks For Sci-fi Love Story Passengers

February 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chris-Pratt-Jurassic-WorldIf you’re going to have a revolving door or female actresses attached to a project, ending up with Jennifer Lawrence isn’t a bad thing. While Reese Witherspoon and Rachel McAdams were previously attached, Lawrence is now in talks for the sci-fi romance, and to make the film a little more interesting, so is Chris Pratt, according to TheWrap.

Pratt is also replacing someone, as Keanu Reeves was attached for a long time.

Pratt will play one of thousands of people who set off on an 120-year interstellar voyage to a new planet. However he wakes up 90 years ahead of schedule, with only androids for company. In need of other human, he decides to wake up a female journalist named Aurora (Lawrence). They inevitably begin to fall in love, and also discover a malfunction on the ship that could threaten their lives.

Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game, Headhunters) recently came onboard to direct the movie, although it’s not clear when the film will shoot.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Tonight It’s Me – A young gay hustler forms an unexpected bond with a trans woman

February 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Caleb-James-Jake-Robbins-in-Tonight-Its-MeTonight It’s Me was one of our favourite films in the recent Boys On Film 12: Confession gay short film collection, but if you need to be convinced that the whole DVD is worth a look, we’ve discovered that the complete Tonight It’s Me short is online and you can watch it below.

The short is about, ‘A hot young hustler who finds himself in uncharted waters when he spends the night with a client who is far from the “Johns” he’s used to servicing.’

In our review we said, ‘It’s an oddly sweet, well-made film that looks at disconnected souls coming together and finding common ground, even if their experience of life is very different. It’s well worth watching, making you consider the different marks that our encounters with other people leave on us.’

Unfortunately we found it a bit too late to help with the crowdfunding for a possible sequel, as a few days ago a Tonight It’s Me: Part II IndieGoGo campaign closed having reached its $3,000 goal. We’re going to have to keep our eyes open as this sequel will only be available on Youtube and is going to be released April 1st 2015, and will let us know what happened to CJ and Ash after the short below.

If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

Poltergeist Trailer – The evil forces are after a little girl & her family again

February 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Poltergeist-PosterSome people may been pretty annoyed about the idea of a Poltergeist remake, but it seems the first trailer is keen assuage some fears by suggesting the do-over has no intention of trying to reinvent the wheel, while also showing that it may have plenty of entertainment to offer.

Indeed Gil Kenan’s film looks surprisingly good.

And just in case you aren’t 100% sure, there’s also both US and international trailers, which feature different footage and are both worth a look. You can see them below.

The movie follow Eric and Amy Bowen (Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt), who move into a suburban home with their 8-year-old daughter Madison (Kennedi Clements). As you’d expect, there are some supernatural entities that don’t want them there and end up abducting Madison. Jared Harris plays the supernatural researcher brought in to help.

The film is described as a contemporary update of the original, with producer Sam Raimi commenting, “The original film commented on how we’ve let television get out of control, babysitting our kids. It’s only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.”

The movie will be out this summer. [Read more…]

Beyond The Reach Trailer – Michael Douglas goes hunting… for Jeremy Irvine

February 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beyond-the-reach-jeremy-irvine-michael-douglasThe deadliest animal is… MAN! It’s an oft quoted phrase and it would seem that it’s true in Beyond The Reach, where Michael Douglas decides he’d really like to shoot him some Jeremy Irvine.

Douglas play a rich man who hires a local to take him on a desert hunting trip. However the arrogant, overly confident rich guy thinks he knows it all, which leads him to making a terrible mistake and shooting someone dead that he thought was an animal. Irvine wants to do the right thing, but Douglas isn’t so keen and so ends up hunting Jeremy in order to keep his secret quiet.

It’s the sort of b-movie premise that fills the straight-to-video shelves on a weekly basis, but this is Douglas doing what he does best – bringing a little Gordon Gekko to the sun-baked desert – while Irvine looks suitable freaked out by what’s going on.

The film is in cinemas and on VOD on April 17th in the US. No UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

Keanu Reeves & Christina Hendricks On For Nicolas Winding Refn’s Neon Demon

February 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

keanu-reevesThe cast for Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming horror tale Neon Demon is coming together. He recently added Elle Fanning and Abbey Lee, and now Variety reports that it’s been revealed at the Berlin Film Festival, that Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone and Bella Heathcote will also star.

Unfortunately though the announcement of new cast members didn’t come with many details about the plot or the characters anyone will play. All that’s known is that it’s a female-driven horror tale set in Los Angeles.

The movie will start shooting March 30th in LA and should hit cinemas in 2016. That’s all the details we know, but hopefully Refn – the man behind Drive, Bronson and Only God Forgives – has something interesting up his sleeve.

Gay Short Film Showcase: We Are Animals – An alternate history takes us into a police state panic over HIV

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

we-are-animals-short-filmUntil recently when watching the gay-themed short film We Are Animals, it would be easy to say, ‘well, that would never happen’, but considering the panic and virtual house arrest imposed on those potentially exposed to Ebola recently, it’s perhaps not as extreme as it might initially seem.

The short takes us into an alternate version of the mid-1980s, where panic over HIV and AIDS has caused chaos and an authoritarian regime to be imposed, where gay and HIV+ positive people are being quarantined, locked up and forcibly castrated. However one young man has to face his own truth after becoming involved in a breakout.

The short gave its name to last year’s gay short film collection, Boys On Film 11: We Are Animals, and at the time we said, ‘We Are Animals is an angry, intense, intriguing and pretty dark film. It’s also very challenging, leaving you to wonder if either side of the argument is completely right or completely wrong, or if intolerance and rhetoric has pushed both sides far further than ought to be justified. It’s a poem to the resolutely queer who will not pass in ways that heteros deem acceptable. However it doesn’t give them a free pass, asking the audience to question what’s going on.’

You can watch the full 13-minute film below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

BoysTown Webseries Episode 1 – The gay-themed TV show heads online for us all to see

February 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boystown-episode1Getting gay-themed entertainment to the public can be a difficult thing and results in some odd idiosyncracies. For example, viewers of OUTtv in Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands & Sweden have been able to enjoy the show BoysTown on television.

However, despite that fact it’s made in the US it’s never aired there, and likewise us Brits are severely lacking in any gay focussed TV networks – despite there being a satellite channel for pretty much everything else – so we haven’t seen it either.

It’s great then that the maker of the show, Reidling Entertainment, has decided to turn it into a web series so that everyone around the world can take a look. While based on the show that aired on TV, it’s been re-edited to give a ‘different twist’, with each episode providing a different outlook on the series and may include unreleased footage.

Creator Ricky Ricky Reidling describes BoysTown as ‘a cross between a gay Desperate Housewives and Sex & the City about 8 men living there lives in Los Angeles where they are always getting themselves into situations that they have a hard time getting out of’. Hunter Ackerman, Jesse Seann Atkinson, Eric Dean, Albertossy Espinoza, Chace Farguson, Jim Patneaude, Ricky Reidling & Peter Welkin star.

The first episode of the web version of the show has now been released, with more coming each Friday over the coming weeks. Take a look at Ep. 1 below. [Read more…]
