Robert de Niro Opens Up About His Gay Father Ahead Of A New Doc About Him

May 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

remembering-the-artist-posterAt Sundance Robert de Niro debuted a documentary about his father. However what few people realised until then was that his dad was gay. The actor’s father and mother divorced shortly after he was born, as Robert De Niro Sr. had realised his sexuality.

Now the doc, Remembering The Artist, is coming up to its first airing on HBO, so De Niro sat down with Out magazine to pay tribute to his father.

Speaking of the documentary, the actors says that while documenting his dad’s legacy was important to him, it wasn’t originally going to be for public consumption. “I felt I had to. I felt obligated. It was my responsibility to make a documentary about him,” he says. “It was not intended to be on HBO. It was just something I wanted to do.”

Despite his desire to make the documentary, he says “We were not the type of father and son who played baseball together, as you can surmise, But we had a connection. I wasn’t with him a lot, because my mother and he were separated and divorced… He was absent in some ways. (But) he was very loving. He adored me… as I do my kids.”

As for his father’s sexuality, de Niro adds, “Yeah, he probably was [conflicted about his homosexuality], being from that generation, especially from a small town upstate. I was not aware, much, of it. I wish we had spoken about it much more. My mother didn’t want to talk about things in general, and you’re not interested when you’re a certain age.

“Again, for my kids, I want them to stop and take a moment and realize that you sometimes have to do things now instead of later, because later may be 20 years from now — and that’s too late.”

Interestingly, although de Niro has starred in several movies about LGBT characters (such as Flawless), he’s never played gay himself. When asked whether his own past played into that fact, he says, “No, they weren’t offered to me. If they had been offered to me by a good director, that’s something I would have considered.”

De Niro Sr. was a successful figurative painter whose work is included in many important collections of American art. However he had trouble with gallery owners and fell out of favour when his art didn’t adapt to the emergence and popularity of pop art in the 1960s. The documentary covers this, as well as revealing more about De Niro Jr’s upbringing and relationship with his dad.

Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro Sr. premieres on HBO in the US June 9th. You can watch the trailer below. [Read more…]

This Is Where I Leave You Trailer – Shawn Levy does something different with Tina Fey & Jason Bateman

May 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shawn Levy is best known for helming comedies and big family-friendly films such as Night At The Museum, The Internship and Real Steel. However he’s going more towards dramatic dark comedy with This Is Where I Leave You.

He’s certainly teamed up with a great cast to do it, including Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Kathryn Hahn, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant, Dax Shepard and Jane Fonda.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide— driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.

The film will hit cinemas this September. [Read more…]

Charlie Cox Will Be Daredevil In The Netflix/Marvel Series

May 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-coxThe Marvel/Netflix series based on Daredevil may have lost showrunner Drew Goddard in the last few weeks, but the project is still moving forward. And like so many other recent superheroes, it’s been revealed that a Brit has been cast in the lead role.

Charlie Cox, who’s best known for his starring role as Tristan in Stardust as well playing Owen Slater in Broadwalk Empire, will be Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the show. The news was initially reported by Latino Review and has since been confirmed by Marvel.

In the comics Murdock is a lawyer who was blinded at a young age in a strange accident that left him with his other senses enhanced. Once he’s able to control that and with a little martial arts training, he becomes the superhero Daredevil, who meets out vigilante justice in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen.

The Daredevil series is the first part of what will be a new Marvel universe that will run in parallel to the featuring Thor and co. Netflix plan shows featuring Marvel characters Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, with all of them then teaming up for The Defenders.

Drew Goddard left the project to concentrate on his Spider-man spin-off, Sinister Six. A replacement has already been found in the form of fellow Joss Whedon veteran Steven S. DeKnight. Daredevil will start shooting this summer, with the 13 episodes released on Netflix next year.

Let’s just hope the hairy-chested Charlie is allowed to stay otter, and isn’t follicularly denuded like so many previous comic characters. Perhaps Henry Cavill will have started a trend for hairy heroes!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 Is Coming, With Nia Vardalos & John Corbett Returning

May 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

my-big-fat-greek-wedding-pic1My Big Fat Greek Wedding is still one of the most successful independent movies ever made, having grossed over $360 million back in 2002. However writer/star Nia Vardalos never really managed to capitalise on that film’s success.

It may be for that reason that a sequel is now in the works, according to THR.

Vardalos has written the script for the follow-up, which is about a new wedding that brings the family together again, along with the revelation of a family secret. She will also return to play Toula Portakalos, with John Corbett also coming back as her husband Ian.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding, will serve have the same job for the follow-up through their Playtone Pictures company, alongside Gary Goetzman.

Nia Vardalos commented, “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

Joel Zwick directed the first film, but the sequel doesn’t have a director attached at this time.

Johnny Depp In Talks To Star In The Secret Life Of Houdini

May 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-deppIn the past few years there have been several movies about Harry Houdini in the works, but they’ve all been stuck in development hell. Now one of them is moving forwards as THR reports that Johnny Depp is in talks to play the title role in The Secret Life Of Houdini.

The movie has had numerous directors since it was first mooted in 2009, such as Jeff Nathanson, Gary Ross and Joe Wright, but it’s now got Dean Parisot (Red) set to helm.

The film ‘which is said to be in the vein of Indiana Jones, recasts Houdini as not just a master escape artist but an investigator of the world of the occult’.

The Secret Life Of Houdini is based on a book written by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, with a script by Noah Oppenheim, which claims that world-famous magician Harry Houdini also led a double life as a British spy. The book also goes deep into his world of magic and mystery, as well as how his legacy was later threatened by a group of fanatical Spiritualists led by esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Depp’s involvement seems dependent on when the fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie will shoot. Johnny is currently shooting Black Mass and then moves onto Through The Looking Glass. Lionsgate would want want Houdini to come next, kicking off its shoot in November, but that would mean Pirates can’t get underway until 2015.

Gay Lives of Straight Guys – What happens when straight guys take on stereotypically gay professions?

May 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the world of stereotypes, there are a few professions where there’s a presumption that if you’re man doing it, you’re gay – such as hairdressing or fashion design. However as you’d expect, while there may be more gay men than the average in those jobs, straight people take them up too.

The documentary ‘Gay Lives of Straight Guys’ takes a look at a selection of straight men who’ve taken on what are often considered gay professions, and now we’ve got a trailer for it. After all, there’s no law that says you’ve got to prefer the same gender to work in gay bar.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A new generation of men is turning the tables on the catch phrase “That’s so Gay!” feeling free to explore professions, friendships and lifestyles once considered strictly off-limits to the hetero-male. In careers such as hairstyling and fashion design to personal appearance, straight dudes are finding a new freedom to express their true talents in areas often reserved for gay men, making friends for the first time across the sexual divide and discovering a new emotional freedom. “Gay Lives of Straight Guys” is documentary that explores these changing attitudes and more through the compelling and intriguing stories of men brave enough to break down barriers and become pioneers in the melting pot of cultures.

Gay Lives of Straight Guys premieres in the US on Tuesday, June 10th on LOGO TV. [Read more…]

Hairspray’s Adam Shankman Plans 1960s Gay Rights Drama For HBO

May 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

adam-shankmanHBO has certainly been on an LGBT roll recently, winning ratings and awards for Behind The Candelabra, backing the TV series Looking and documentaries such as The Case Against 8 and making The Normal Heart, which debuted to above average viewing figures for the pay-cable network last weekend.

Now it’s getting back in the gay business and it’s teaming up with Hairspray, Wedding Planner and Rock Of Ages director Adam Shankman to do it, according to THR. The former choreographer has sold Open City to the network, based on a script by feature writer David Kajganich.

The project ‘is set in the vibrant, turbulent John Lindsay-era New York of the late 1960s and explores characters from disparate corners of Manhattan as they navigate the cultural revolutions and political turmoil of the era. The drama will also examine the unlikely alliance between the Mafia and the city’s gay community in the opening of a West Village nightclub.

It has the potential to be an interesting look at the pre-Stonewall world, a time when, as that synopsis suggest, the mob was heavily involved in gay venues. It’s not because they liked gays, but because those wanting to start gay bars and nightclubs knew getting into business with the mob could actually help prevent the police shutting, due to the ‘protection’ they offered, which the Mafia would get a heavy chunk of the cash the place made.

Open City is getting some help from someone who was there at the time, as Ronnie Lorenzo, one of the original owners of the Stonewall Inn, will serve as a consulting producer.

It’s not clear exactly when the project will air.

Dark Blood Trailer – River Phoenix’s final film arrives 20 years after he died

May 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s over 20 years since River Phoenix died of a drugs overdose outside the Viper Room in LA. At the time he was shooting the movie Dark Blood, which had to be abandoned in the wake of his death.

At least it was initially, but a few years ago director George Sluizer (Vanishing) picked up the footage again to see whether there was anything he could do with it. That involved completely reworking the story as only about 65% of the movie was ever filmed, as well as trying to explain Phoenix’s absence from chunks of the movie.

The film premiered last year to a mixed response, and should now be getting a release we can all view soon.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Dark Blood tells the story of Boy (River Phoenix) a young widower who retreats to the desert after his wife dies of radiation following nuclear tests near their home. Boy is waiting for the end of the world and carves Katchina dolls that supposedly contain magical powers. Harry (Jonathan Pryce) and Buffy (Judy Davis) travel to the desert on a second honeymoon in an attempt to save their marriage. Their Bentley breaks down in the middle of nowhere and the couple is rescued by Boy. Boy holds them prisoner because of his desire for the woman and his ambition to create a better world with her.’ [Read more…]
