Starring: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris
Director: Alfonso Cuaron
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: November 7th 2013

Gravity comes to the UK having taken an impressive $200+M dollars at the US box office on a budget estimated at only $100M. So why has this movie been such a huge success, rocketing its way to the the big box office earners of 2013?

Philomena (Cinema)

November 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steve Coogan, Judi Dench, Anna Maxwell Martin, Mare Winningham
Director: Stephen Frears
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: November 1st 2013

Peter Mullan’s 2002 film The Magdalene Sisters was a howl of outrage at the Catholic Church in Ireland; a coruscating, raw drama about the abuse of young girls basically held prisoner by sadistic nuns after falling pregnant.

Stephen Freers’ Philomena has basically the same theme but is, by comparison, a gentle, warm story, which seems too timid to unveil the same power as Mullan’s film. Dench and Coogan have rightly garnered strong reviews for their performances, but the film’s script seems too scared of going for the emotional knockout punch, despite the real power of the story. First Pics Of Jeremy Renner In Kill the Messenger

November 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-the-messenger-pic1
Kill The Messenger recently finished shooting and now we’ve got our first look at Jeremy Renner in the movie, via USA Today, with the actor stepping aside from the action hero roles we’ve seen him in recently.

The movie is based on the true story of Gary Webb, a San Jose Mercury News reporter who helped expose the CIA’s involvement in a drug smuggling operation with Nicaraguan rebels in the 1980s. In an effort to discredit the writer, the agency launched a smear campaign before the journalist tragically his own life.

Director Michael Cuesta commented, “Gary just starts digging and keeps digging like a Doberman to find the truth. But he never expected the story to have the response it did. He was controversial-ized.”

Jeremy Renner adds, “Good investigative journalism ruffles feathers. From the reaction he got, Gary was doing something right. It’s a man left out in the wind on his own. The letter was the ultimate betrayal for Gary, I believe. The mothership bailed and that crushed him.”

The movie will be out next year.

Hugh Jackman & James Mangold Coming Back For Another Wolverine Movie

November 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wolverine-review-slide
Earlier this year Hugh Jackman said that after X-Men: Days Of Future Past he was planning to have a bit of a break before playing Wolverine again, however it’s now been revealed that he’s agreed to reteam with director James Mangold for a third Wolverine spin-off movie, according to Deadline.

This will be the 8th time Hugh Jackman has played the character, after two solo films and five X-Men movies. Perhaps surprisingly, this will be the longest any actor has played the same superhero on the big screen.

Although The Wolverine was only a modest success in the States, grossing $132 million, it pulled in over $280 million overseas for a total worldwide gross of $413 million. That makes it the second highest-grossing X-Men movie, just behind X-Men: The Last Stand, which earned $459 worldwide. With Days Of Future Past expected to be a big hit next summer, 20th Century Fox has decided it’s worth putting another Wolverine movie into development.

James Mangold will write the treatment, although there’s no news on what the plot may be.

Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler has a bit of history in videogame movies, having appeared Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, as well as the game-themed Gamer. Now he is in talks to play Kane in the long-gestating video game adaptation Kane & Lynch, according to THR.

The backers have apparently also made an offer to Vin Diesel for the Lynch role, but it isn’t known how likely he is to accept.

The movie first went into development in 2007, when Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx were attached to play the title characters. The last we heard about it was in September 2010, when French director Patrick Alessandrin (District 13 Ultimatum) left the movie.

Skip Woods (Ten) and Kyle Ward (Machete Kills) wrote the screenplay, which is based on the Eidos Interactive title. The game follows two death row inmates who are sprung from prison to retrieve a stolen fortune.

Samuel L. Jackson May be Playing Gay In The Stephen King Adaptation Cell

November 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

samuel-l-jacksonFor a while now, John Cusack has been attached to an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, Cell. Now he’s got some company, as THR reports that Samuel L. Jackson has signed up too.

The movie is about Clay Wheeler (John Cusack), a Boston artist who is trying to reunite with his son after a mysterious cell phone signal turns humans into vicious, zombie-type monsters. Samuel L. Jackson is playing Tom McCourt, an engineer and former soldier who flees from the city with Clay. In the novel, McCourt is a gay man, although it’s not known if that’s being ported over to the film, and that Jackson will therefore be playing gay.

Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) will direct from a screenplay co-written by Stephen King and Adam Alleca (The Last House on the Left). Production is scheduled to begin in January, with the project currently being sold at the American Film Market.

Kristen Stewart & Jesse Eisenberg Up For American Ultra

November 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jesse-esienbergAfter starring together in Adventureland, Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg are reuniting for the stoner-slacker action-comedy American Ultra, according to THR.

The movie is about Mike (Eisenberg), a lazy stoner who lives with his girlfriend Phoebe (Stewart). However, their lives are turned upside down when Mike’s past comes back to haunt him, when he becomes the target of a government-sanctioned operation to take him out.

Nima Nourizadeh (Project X) is set to direct from a screenplay by Max Landis (Chronicle). Producer Anthony Bregman commented, “Simply put, American Ultra will be the most fun you can possibly have in a movie theater without the use of drugs, fireworks or canola oil.”

We’ll believe it when we see it.

Love Always Wins Short Film Challenges Russian Anti-Gay Laws At The Winter Olympics

November 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Russia has come under a lot of international pressure recently for new laws that make it illegal to ‘promote’ non-traditional relationships to minors. While lawmakers insist it isn’t homophobic, it essentially outlaws any public support of anything LGBT, and some of the laws more virulent supporters want to extend that to it banning any visible signs of anything gay.

This has inevitably caused some to question how the laws will effect gay athletes and supporters at the upcoming Winter Olympics. All Out has decided to take that on with a well-made and rather moving two-minute short called Love Always Wins, looking at the reaction of a Lesbian ice skater after winning.

Take a look above and head over to All Out to find out more. [Read more…]
