Paddy Considine Joins Tom Hardy & Noomi Rapace In Child 44

May 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paddy-ConsidineTom Hardy and Noomi Rapace recently made Animal Rescue together and they’re planning to team again for Child 44 later this year. Gary Oldman and Joel Kinnaman have already joined them in the film, and now they have some more company, as TheWrap reports that Paddy Considine and Sweden’s Fares Fares are in talks to star in the movie.

Child 44 is set in 1950s Russia, with Hardy as a Soviet military police officer who becomes the target of his suspicious government while he’s investigating a string of child murders. Joel Kinnaman will play the killer responsible for these brutal deaths, while Noomi Rapace is Hardy’s wife. Oldman meanwhile is the head of police who becomes suspicious of Hardy’s character and starts investigating him.

There’s no news on exactly who Considine will play, but Fares will be one of Hardy’s trusted allies. Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) is set to direct.

Gael Garcia Bernal in Rudo y Cursi

Gael Garcia Bernal

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Jon Stewart was taking 12-week break from The Daily Show, so that he can make his feature-film directorial debut with Rosewater. Now he’s signed his first star, as TheWrap reports that Gael García Bernal has signed up to take the lead role.

Stewart also wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from Maziar Bahari’s 2011 book Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival. The book recounts the author/journalist’s time in Iran, where he was supposed to go for one week to cover the country’s national elections. Instead, he was held in an Iranian prison for 118 days, tortured and interrogated by a mysterious man who the writer described as smelling of rosewater.

Gael García Bernal will play the reporter, who left his pregnant fiancée behind in London for what he thought was a routine assignment. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this summer.

Evan Peters To Play Quicksilver In X-Men: Days of Future Past

May 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

evan-petersLast week Joss Whedon confirmed that Quicksilver will appear in The Avengers 2. Now director Bryan Singer has tweeted that the character will also be in X-Men: Days of Future Past, played by American Horror Story star Evan Peters.

Singer said, ‘Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen#DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.’

As Bryan Singer mentions in his announcement, Quicksilver (a.k.a. Pietro Maximoff) was a part of the X-Men universe before becoming an Avenger with his sister Scarlet Witch (a.k.a. Wanda Maximoff). Quicksilver is the son of Magneto, played by both Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen in the X-Men universe, using his power of super-human speed to do evil for the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

It’s unusual that a comic book character can appear in film franchises run by two different studios, but apparently there’s a special clause about Quicksilver because of his strong presence in both the X-Men and Avengers worlds. Apparently the way it works is that Quicksilver can appear in an Avengers film as long as his X-Men past and Magneto parentage aren’t mentioned. He’s almost certain to be played by a different actor in Avengers 2.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past is currently shooting in Montreal.

Queer Photo Doc South Of The Border Hopes To Explore Being LGBT In The US South

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For many people, when they think on the US South, images of rednecks and rampant homophobia spring to mind. But what’s it like to be queer and live in the South?

The ‘queer photo documentary’ South Of The Border, from filmmaker Christian Hendricks, hopes to explore this, and is seeking $5,000 on Kickstarter to helm. Hendricks hopes to spend several weeks this summer on the road, travelling the American South and going to LGBT events, bars, and community groups, and documenting life there through the medium of photography.

He says, “Though my hometown of Cincinnati is in every sense a midwestern city, it serves as the gateway to the American South, sitting just across from the Ohio River, where the South (and my journey) begins.

“I’m drawn to the South’s distinctive culture: a region that is famous for being both hospitable and intolerant. What is it like to be queer in a region with such conservative religious and political convictions? Are these just fading stereotypes from the past? I hope to answer these questions and more as I set out to meet people, immerse myself in communities, and develop a new, personal understanding that I can share through photography.”

It sounds like it could be an interesting, so head over to Kickstarter to find out more. [Read more…]

Feature Version Of Aussie LGBT Short Film Drowning Looks For Funding

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Fans of the Boys On Film series of DVDs, which feature a selection of the best LGBT shorts from around the world, may remember Drowning from Boys On Film 6: Pacific Rim. The Aussie slick, Now director Craig Boreham is hoping to turn Drowning into a feature film, and is seeking $67,000 on the crowd-funding site Pozible to help him, with the hope of eventually raising $200,000 to complete the film.

The campaign is near its target, but only has a few hours left until it May 25th deadline.

The movie version of Drowning will be called Teenage Kicks. Here’s the synopsis: In the final moments of his 17th year, Miklós Varga’s world has come crashing down. His plans to run away and escape his claustrophobic migrant family have been brutally undone by the unexpected death of his older brother, Tomi. Only Mik knows the events that led to this tragedy and as far as he can see there is only one person to blame. Himself. He is suddenly torn between his desire to head north and start a new life with his best friend Dan, and his familial obligation to fix his broken family: torn between the life that he wants to have and the life that he feels he’s expected to have. Can he fill the aching void left by his adored sibling or is he toxic and destined to bring ruin upon everyone he loves? Teenage kicks is a journey through the minefield of adolescence, as Mik searches for a way to navigate through his guilt and explosive sexuality to become the man that he wants to become.’

Miles Szanto will play Mik, Bojana Novakovic is set to be Annuska and Luke Arnold will be Tomi. It certainly expands on the ideas of Drowning, including its main character’s fluid sexuality.

Pacific Rim – Drift Space Featurette – See how the giant robots are piloted

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The trailers for Pacific Rim have certainly sold the massive special effects and incredible look of the movie, but there’s not been much on the human side of the film. Now a new featurette has popped up which should help with that, as it concentrates on how two human pilots are needed for the giant robots in the movie.

It’s well worth a look.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.’

It’s out July 12th.

We’re The Millers Red Band Trailer – Jennifer Aniston is Jason Sudeikis’ fake wife

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jennifer Aniston obviously didn’t have enough of fake relationships in Just Go With It, as she’s having another one in We’re The Millers. Now a red band trailer for the movie has arrived, featuring Aniston alongside Jason Sudekis, Emma Roberts and young British actor Will Poulter.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘David is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples.  So what could go wrong?  Plenty.  Having been jumped by a trio of gutter punks who steal his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to a drug lord. In order to wipe the slate clean, David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico.  Twisting the arms of his neighbours including a cynical stripper, a wannabe customer and a tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen, he devises a fool proof plan.  One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny campervan later, the “Millers” are on a roadtrip that is sure to end with a bang.’

It hits UK cinemas August 23rd. [Read more…]

New The World’s End Trailer – Simon Pegg & Nick Frost are off on an epic pub crawl

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a couple of new posters were released for The World’s End earlier this week, now it’s time for a trailer, which suggests the Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright reunion is going to be a lot of fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007). In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.’

It hits UK cinemas on July 19th. [Read more…]

Delivery Man Teaser – Vince Vaughn has 533 kids!

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you donate sperm, who knows how many kids you might have running around. For Vince Vaughn it’s 533 whippersnappers he fathered via a fertility clinic (or at least his character in Delivery Man did, I’m sure he doesn’t have that many in real life). Now the first teaser for the comedy has arrived.

The movie is Ken Scott’s English-language remake of his own 2011 Canadian comedy Starbuck. Vaughn is David Wozniak, who fathered 533 kids a couple of decades ago, and now 142 of those kids are suing to learn his identity.

Chris Pratt and Cobie Smulders also star. The film is due in cinemas this autumn. [Read more…]

Don Jon Trailer – Take a look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of interest in Don Jon, largely because it’s the first film Joseph Gordon Levitt has directed. He also stars in the movie, alongside Scarlett Johnasson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza. Now we can get out first taste with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old-fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to “pull” a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn’t compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old-fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she’s determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old-fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.’

It’s due out later this year. [Read more…]
