Tom Hardy On For Spider-Man Spin-off Venom, With Ruben Fleischer Set To Direct

May 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Hardy sure seems to like his comic book movies. After playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, he very nearly played Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad, until overruns on shooting The Revenant forced him to back out. Now he’s planning a return to the comic book world, as Variety reports that he’s set to star in Sony’s planned Spider-man spin-off, Venom.

The ‘alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive’ was introduced to movie audiences in Spider-man 3, but it left fans rather disappointed in how it was used and certainly didn’t leave viewers wanting more, despite how popular the character is in the Marvel comics. Not much has been revealed about the new film’s take on Venom. In the comics he’s generally been a supervillain, but it’s likely he’ll become more antihero for the movie.

Scott Rosenberg (“Jumanji”) and Jeff Pinkner (“The Dark Tower”) will write the script, with Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer recently coming on board to direct. The whole thing will have to come together quickly, as Sony wants to release the movie during October 2018.

Suicide Squad’s David Ayer May Direct Scarface Remake

May 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

David Ayer had a big hit with Suicide Squad (even if the critical reception was a little rough). Now he’s planning something that closer in tone to his earlier movies, such as Street Kings and End Of Watch. THR reports that Ayer is in talks to direct Universal’s planned remake of Scarface, following the departure of the previously attached Antoine Fuqua, who left due to scheduling conflicts.

Scarface first started out in 1932 when Howard Hawks directed the tale of the rise and fall of a violent gangster. However, most people remember Brian De Palma’s 1983 version starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana. The new version will change things once again, moving the action from Miami to LA and bringing it up to date to the modern day.

Diego Luna is set to the play the lead role in the movie.

Ayer’s next movie is Bright, will is Netflix’s first $100+ million movie, starring Will Smith, which is due to be released via the online service in December. Scarface should be released in cinemas sometime next year.

May 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Stephen Amell has spoken before about being a bit of a Ninja Warrior fan. But how would he do if he had to take on the course himself? On screen as Arrow he’s an action master, but is that just camera tricks and stunt people?

Well, for the US version of Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day, Amell is taking on the course, and a sneak peek of him has been released. And for those of you worrying he’d be all muscles and no skill, the man does good – at least as far as we get to see.

Amell’s entire run on the American Ninja Warrior course will air on NBC in the US on Thursday May 25th if you want to see the rest. Take a look at the sneak peek below. [Read more…]

Final The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise needs a monster to defeat a monster

May 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal has a lot riding on The Mummy, as they’re hoping they can rival Disney/Marvel and Warner/DC’s interconnected coming book universes, with a monster movie universe. They’re kicking that off with The Mummy, and they’ve got some a-list talent to help them, with Tom Cruise starring. Russell Crowe is also due to show up as Dr. Jeykyll/Mr. Hyde.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilisation: The Mummy.

‘Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.’

The film is due out in June. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Good Time Trailer – Robert Pattinson like we’ve never seen him before

May 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Twilight, the world was at Robert Pattinson’s feet. However, rather than trying to scramble ever further up the Hollywood tree in search over ever-larger paycheques, he’s decided to favour interesting and unusual films, as well as ones that can challenge him. That trend continues with Good Time.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the mind-bending HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT, celebrated filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie return to the mean streets of New York City with GOOD TIME, a hypnotic crime thriller that explores with bracing immediacy the tragic sway of family and fate.

‘After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Constantine Nikas (Robert Pattinson) embarks on a twisted odyssey through the city’s underworld in an increasingly desperate—and dangerous—attempt to get his brother out of jail. Over the course of one adrenalized night, Constantine finds himself on a mad descent into violence and mayhem as he races against the clock to save his brother and himself, knowing their lives hang in the balance.

Anchored by a career-defining performance from Robert Pattinson, GOOD TIME is a psychotic symphony of propulsive intensity crafted by two of the most exciting young directors working today. Josh and Benny Safdie’s transcendent vision is an intoxicating portrait of desperation and destruction that will not be soon forgotten.’

Take a look at the trailer below. The movie will be released later this year. [Read more…]

Gay Series Eastsiders, Starring Kit Williamson & Van Hansis, Heads To Kickstarter To Fund Season 3

May 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eastsiders has been a great success, starting off as a web series before eventually being picked up by the likes of Logo TV and now streaming on Netflix, as well as scoring a couple of Emmy nominations. However, that doesn’t suddenly mean those behind the show are rolling around in cash, and so they’ve launched a Kickstarter to get Season 3 of the show completed.

Five and the six new episodes of the show, which charts the ups and downs of the lives of Cal (Kit Williamsson – who also created and writes the show) and Thom (Van Hansis), with the show kicking off its first Season just as their relationship went through a huge crisis due to infidelity. So what’s happening next?

According to the Kickstarter page, ‘Season two of “EastSiders: The Series” left Cal and Thom determined to make things work, despite some confusing developments in their newly monogomish relationship. After a challenging year in New York City, the guys hit the road back west to Los Angeles to pick up the pieces of their old life, but nothing can prepare them for the unexpected twists and turns they’ll face on the journey home. Season three was shot on location in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada and (of course) California! Driving across the country with a crew has to be one of the craziest thing we’ve ever done, but the end result will be unlike anything you’ve seen on the web. The Great American Road Trip is about to get a lot gayer!’

Along with Hansis and Williamson, the rest of the cast is also returning, including Matthew McKelligon (Int. Leather Bar, You’re Killing Me), John Halbach (Wallflowers), Traci Lords (Cry Baby, Zach and Miri Make a Porno) and Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Rich Asians), as well as season two cast members Brianna Brown (Devious Maids), Stephen Guarino (Happy Endings, I’m Dying Up Here) and drag sensation Willam (Nip/Tuck, Rupaul’s Drag Race). There will of course also be some new cast members, who’ll be announced in the coming weeks.

Gay-Themed Feature Film Happiness Adjacent Seeks Your Help To Get It To The Screen

May 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rob Williams is a bit of a one-man gay film factory, having made the likes of Three Day Weekend, Make The Yuletide Gay, Role/Play, Out To Kill, The Men Next Door and, most recently, the Christmassy movie, Shared Rooms. Now he’s planning his return with Happiness Adjacent, which has launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in the hope of raising completion funding.

The romantic drama ‘explores the romance between Hank Eisenberg, a nice Jewish man who is still recovering from a bad breakup, and Kurt Dimmeldorf, a Midwestern guy who desperately needs someone to break up the monotony of his stale marriage. The men meet on cruise to Mexico, where gay Hank is traveling alone and bisexual Kurt is vacationing with his wife, Kate, who seems clueless about her husband’s extramarital affairs.’

The director shared with us that he, “Shot the film entirely on the iPhone 6s Plus (in 4K resolution!), guerrilla-style on a cruise to Mexico. Please check out the many perks we have available [on Indiegogo], make a contribution and/or share the link with anyone who might be interested!”

You can take a look at the fundraising video below, and then head over to Indiegogo if you want to help out. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Bayard & Me – A look at legendary civil rights activist Bayard Rustin & his boyfriend

May 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘In Bayard & Me, award-winning filmmaker Matt Wolf shares the little-known story of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin and the lengths he went to legalize his relationship with his partner Walter Naegle.

‘The civil rights activist is best known for organizing the March on Washington and advising Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the 1980s, Bayard adopted his younger partner Walter Naegle for legal protections. In this intimate love story, Walter remembers Bayard, who died in 1987 at the age of 75, and a time when gay marriage was inconceivable. He also reflects on the phenomena of intergenerational gay adoption and its connection to the civil rights movement.’

“I made this film because I’m inspired by the creative ways that Bayard Rustin and his partner Walter Naegle worked around the system to obtain equal rights,” says director Matt Wolf. “We need direct action in the streets, but sometimes radical things happen in private acts of defiance.”

Bayard & Me premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and had its international premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival. It’s continued to earn kudos along the festival circuit, winning Best Documentary Short at QFest and the Calgary Underground Film Festival. Filmmaker Magazine called it “a moving remembrance,” and Town & Country praised it as a “movie to see.”

47 Meters Down Trailer – Mandy Moore & Claire Holt have Great White Shark problems

May 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The movie business certainly owes an apology to sharks, as they regularly have to be the villain of the piece. That trend continues with 47 Metres Down, starring Mandy Moore & Claire Holt.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On the rebound after a devastating break-up, Lisa (Mandy Moore) is ready for adventure while on vacation in Mexico. Even still, she needs a little extra persuasion when her daring sister Kate (Claire Holt) suggests they go shark diving with some locals. Once underwater in a protective cage, Lisa and Kate catch a once in a lifetime, face-to-face look at majestic Great Whites. But when their worst fears are realized and the cage breaks away from their boat, they find themselves plummeting to the bottom of the seabed, too deep to radio for help without making themselves vulnerable to the savage sharks, their oxygen supplies rapidly dwindling. 47 METERS DOWN is a terrifying tale of survival set in the domain of the ocean’s fiercest creatures.’

The film will be in US cinemas in June. Now UK dates is currently set. [Read more…]

Michelle Yeoh & Sonequa Martin-Green Appear In First Look At Star Trek: Discovery

May 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If all had gone to the original plan, we’d have already seen the first episodes of Discovery, Paramount’s first foray in TV Star Trek since Enterprise went off air in 2005. However, various delays mean it won’t be arriving until later this year (no exact date has been announced yet).

With TV companies currently shopping their latest wares to potential advertisers and the media, the first character picture from the new Star Trek series has arrived, giving us our first glimpse at Michelle Yeoh‘s Captain Philippa Georgiou and Sonequa Martin-Green‘s First Officer Michael Burnham. Not too much is known about how they fit into the overall plot, but Burham is the First Officer on a ship called Discovery, while Georgiou commands another ship.

It has been said that the show is seen through the eyes of a female character who isn’t a captain, so it may be that it’s Martin-Green who is the focus of the show. Others involved include Jason Isaacs as Discovery’s captain, and Doug Jones playing a science officer who’s a member of an alien species new to the Star Trek universe. Also onboard is Anthony Rapp as astromycologist Lt. Stamets, who will be Star Trek’s first regular gay character.

Star Trek: Discovery will be released via CBS: All Access in the US, and Netflix in the rest of the world.
