Exodus: God & Kings (Cinema Review)

December 23, 2014 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver
Director: Ridley Scott
Running Time: 150 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: December 26th 2014

Ridley Scott is one of the most revered directors of our time. While he’s worked in all sorts of genres, he’s had particular success with ground-breaking classic sci-fi such as Alien, as well historical biographies or fiction, which often turn out to be masterpieces such as the multi award winning Gladiator. There is no doubt that Scott is one of cinema’s greatest storytellers.

This time Ridley Scott brings to our screen possibly the third greatest story ever told (after the birth of Jesus and Noah) – the Exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt. This Old Testament tale of Moses was immortalised by Charlton Heston in 1956’s The Ten Commandments, but who could possibly fill this famous pair of sandals this time? Well, none other than Batman himself – Christian Bale. [Read more…]

Aaron-Paul-slideMiramax is pulling together a cast of hot young actors for The 9th Life of Louis Drax. Jamie Dornan was cast a couple of weeks ago, and now he’s been joined by Aaron Paul, according to THR.

In order to reveal the strange circumstances surrounding the young boy’s accident – Dr. Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan) is ‘drawn into a thrilling mystery, testing the boundaries of fantasy and reality.’

Paul will play the father of the young boy, who becomes the initial subject of the investigation into the accident.

Alexandre Aja is directing from a screenplay by Max Minghella (who took on the project following the death of his father, English Patient director Anthony Minghella, who’d previously been developing the movie).

A Long Way Down (DVD Review)

July 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Imogen Poots, Aaron Paul, Toni Collette, Sam Neill
Director: Pascal Chaumeil
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 28th 2014 (UK)

If you’ve never read Nick Hornby’s book, A Long Way Down, I’d heartily recommend it. However most people who’ve read the novel will know it was always going to be tough to adapt it for the screen without making it seem trite or cheap. While not a complete disaster, unfortunately the movie version doesn’t completely overcome those issues.

On New Year’s Eve four strangers meet on a rooftop – disgraced broadcaster Martin (Pierce Brosnan), loud-mouthed politician’s daughter Jess (Imogen Poots), down-trodden mother Maureen (Toni Collette) and musician JJ (Aaron Paul). They’re all there to do the same thing – leap to their deaths. [Read more…]

Hellion Trailer – Aaron Paul gets really beardy for a new thriller

May 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you, like many others, have spent night awake wondering how full a beard Aaron Paul can grow, then Hellion is the movie for you!

But it’s not just about his beard.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul stars in this riveting drama about a family under siege. Hard-drinking Texas single dad Hollis (Paul) struggles to raise his two boys, including rebellious teenager Jacob (first-time actor Josh Wiggins in a stunning breakthrough performance). Seething with anger, Jacob finds release in the high-risk, white-knuckle world of motocross—but his increasingly reckless behavior threatens to spin out of control. Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis co-stars in this thrilling saga of fathers and sons that builds towards a heart-stopping climax, all set to an electrifying heavy metal soundtrack.’

The movie is out in the US in June.

And if Aaron Paul ever wants to go to any bear bars, we’re sure he’ll get a warm welcome. [Read more…]

A few weeks ago it was announced that Colin Firth had signed on to star in and produce a drone thriller called Eye In The Sky. Now he has some company as it’s been revealed that Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul have signed on too.

The movie is described as a ‘contemporary international thriller set in the shadowy world of remotely piloted “drone” warfare, Mirren will star as Colonel Michelle Madden, a military intelligence officer in command of a top secret drone operation. Paul takes the focal role of American drone pilot Steve Watts.’

Watts is sent in to destroy the safe-house in Nairobi, but he realises that taking it out will also put the life of a nine-year-old-girl at risk. With the volatility of the situation and the possible fallout increasing, Madden passes the mission up the ‘kill chain’ to politicians and lawyers, including the British Foreign secretary (the role it’s believed Firth will take).

Guy Hibbert wrote the script with Ender’s Game’s Gavin Hood set to direct. Production is expected to begin in South Africa on 12th September 2014.

A Long Way Down Trailer – Aaron Paul & Pierce Brosnan contemplate suicide

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost a year a half since filming started on A Long Way Down and we got the first image. It’s only now that we’re getting a trailer for the adaptation of Nick Hornby’s excellent book, even though when it went into production there was talk of having it ready for an early 2013 release.

The film starts on New Year’s Eve on the top of a London skyscraper. Martin (Pierce Brosnan) is literally on the edge. A once-beloved TV personality, he’s now desperate to jump. But he’s not alone. Single mother Maureen, (Toni Collette), sassy teen Jess (Imogen Poots), and failed musician turned pizza-delivery boy JJ (Aaron Paul), have all turned up on the same roof with the same plan. Instead of jumping, these four strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until Valentine’s Day at least. The movie then follows this group of unlikely friends as they try to pull back from the brink.

Sam Neill also stars in a film that may have a depressing sounding synopsis, but if it’s anything like the book will be unexpectedly rewarding. It’s out in March in the UK but is still awaiting a US release dates. [Read more…]
