Steve Jobs (DVD Review)

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Michael Stuhlbarg, Katherine Waterston
Director: Danny Boyle
Running Time: 122 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 21st 2016 (UK)

I’m starting to think that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has decided he’s a complete prick, and so has set out to write things that suggest that being the best and being an ass go hand-in-hand. The likes of The Social Network, Steve Jobs and, to some extent, The Newsroom and Studio 60 On Sunset Strip have all forwarded this agenda. Rumours suggest Sorkin can be incredibly demanding and difficult to work with (stories of how tough it was in the writer’s room of The West Wing and how little he listened to other peoples’ ideas are legendary), and it’s oddly interesting how so many of his projects seem to be about his own issues with this.

What he never quite addresses though is something he puts in the mouth of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in Steven Jobs, who tells the demanding and difficult Steve that being talented and being a decent person are not mutually exclusive. However, in the world of Aaron Sorkin, it often feels like they are. [Read more…]

New X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer – What happens when mutants start to believe they’re gods?

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xmen_Apocalypse_CampD_Defend-slideThe timeline may have been reset with X-Men: Days Of Future Past, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of problems between man and mutant – or more particularly in Apocalypse between mutant and mutant. Now a new trailer has dropped which suggests this is going to be one hell of a battle.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.’

It’ll be in cinemas May 18th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-apocalypse-trailer-slideThings were pretty precarious for the mutants in Days Of Future Past, but it looks like resetting the timeline hasn’t made their lives any easier. An extended version of the movie’s Super Bowl spot certainly suggests things are getting intense, angry and destructive.

Take a look below.

Here’s the synopsis:’Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Director: Justin Kurzel
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: 15

A rebellion is underway against Scottish King Duncan (David Thewlis), and it looks like it may be the end for his reign, until Thane Of Glamis, Macbeth (Michael Fassbender), scores an unexpected battlefield victory. However, before he can go back to Duncan, Macbeth and his friend Banquo (Paddy Considine) are visited by three witches, who tell the former that he will be King, but that it is the latter’s children who will reign in the future.

Goaded on by his ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard), Macbeth kills Duncan and seizes the throne. However, his greed and aspirations begin to slowly consume him, as he attempts to consolidate his power and ensure that the witches’ prophecy about Banquo’s children will not come true and that his own line will rule Scotland. Katherine Waterston To Star In Alien: Covenant

December 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

katherine-waterstonRidley Scott is finally back at work on Prometheus 2, which is now known as Alien: Covenant (indeed, they slightly seem to be trying to pretend Prometheus never happened), and he’s now casting who will appear alongside Michael Fassbender in the film. While it appears Noomi Rapace will have a small role, it appears shes passing the main female lead role across to Katherine Waterston, who’s now in final talks for the part.

Covenant isn’t completely ignoring Prometheus, as it will follow what happened after Fassbender and Rapace left the alien planet, in search of the engineers that apparently created the human race. However, the early info suggests something has happened to Rapace’s Shaw, leaving Fassbender’s David alone. They then rendezvous with another ship, and it won’t be surprising to hear they end up with a bit of a xenomorph issue, with Scott already promising that the classic aliens will be making a return. We’ll also get to find out what disaster befel the engineers.

There have been some suggestions that Steve Jobs and Inherent Vice star Waterston may be playing Ellen Ripley’s grandmother in the movie, although that hasn’t been confirmed. It’s expected the movie will shoot next year, for release in 2017.

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer – James McAvoy and co. go up against what may be the ultimate mutant

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-apocalypse-trailer-slideAfter the huge success of X-Men: Days Of Future Past, the mutant are returning with X-Men: Apocalypse, which may not have the actors from the original trilogy, but brings back the likes of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, alongside plenty of newbies, many of them playing younger versions of characters we’ve seen before.

And with Days Of Future Past resetting the timeline, it also allows for reinvented versions of characters.

Here’s the synopsis:’Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Michael Fassbender May Star In The Snowman

September 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-fassbenderFor a long time Martin Scorsese was attached to direct a movie version of Jo Nesbo’s novel The Snowman. However just over a year ago he was replaced by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

Now it looks like the project is ready to move forward, as THR reports that Michael Fassbender is in talks to play the lead role of Harry Hole. At the moment it’s still early days, but if all works out, he’ll be taking on the part.

Joe Nesbo’s novel follows Oslo detective Harry Hole, a loose cannon who is investigating the disappearance of a woman, whose pink scarf is found wrapped around a sinister-looking snowman. It could be the start of a franchise, as Hole has been part of numerous Nesbo books.

New Macbeth Trailer – Michael Fassbender & Marion Cotillard take on the Scottish play

September 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

macbeth-slide2Shakespeare on screen has a very mixed history, but director Justin Kurzel (Snow Town) and stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are hope they’ve created the definitive movie version of Macbeth – and from the evidence of this trailer, it looks like they could have done it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The highly anticipated tale of war, ambition, love, murder and betrayal, directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) and starring Academy-Award nominee Michael Fassbender (Twelve Years A Slave, Shame, Hunger) and Academy-Award winner Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night, La Vie En Rose) will see a UK release on OCTOBER 2nd.

‘Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.

‘MACBETH is from the producers of The King’s Speech and Shame. MACBETH also stars Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter series), Sean Harris (Prometheus), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby).’

It’ll be in UK cinemas in October. [Read more…]

First Look At Michael Fassbender In Character For Assassin’s Creed

August 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

assassins-creed-first-lookI’d almost forgotten the videogame series Assassin’s Creed was getting a movie, partly because it’s been in the works for so far. However, while game to movies have a bad reputation, you have to hope that the presence of Michael Fassbender might raise this one above the rest. It also appears they’re trying to make the film it’s own animal, as Fassbender will play a character created specifically for the movie.

He’s certainly looking good in the central role, as shown in this first promo image (which debuted on Yahoo!), which echoes the game covers while simultaneously looking suitably historical.

Alongside the image comes a synopsis: ‘[Callum] Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.’

The movie will reunite director Justin Kurzel with his Macbeth stars Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, with Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed also set to star.
