Eddie Redmayne Joins Channing Tatum In The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eddie-redmayneCloud Atlas may not have been the critical and commercial success the Wachowskis (and co-director Tom Twyker) had hoped, but they’re now planning a return to the sci-fi arena with Jupiter Ascending. They’ve already got Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis attached to star, and now Variety reports that Les Miserables star Eddie Redmayne is in talks to join him.

The movie is set in a future where humans are considered the lowest form of life in the galaxy. Tatum is set to star as an intergalactic bounty hunter who is sent by the Queen of the Universe to kill an human woman (Kunis) whose genetic detailss are identical to the Queen’s. And as this is the movies, the would-be assassin begins to fall in love with the person he’s supposed to kill.

It’s not been revealed how Eddie Redmayne fits into all this. Andy and Lana Wachowski will direct from their own screenplay, with production scheduled to begin early next year.

Oz The Great & Powerful Full Trailer – Sam Raimi’s flick is looking incredibly fantastical

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As we were promised when the full banner poster for Oz the Great And Powerful was revealed yesterday, a new full trailer for the movie has now been released. It’s certainly wants to suggest this is going to be a fantastical, incredible looking movie, and as many have said, there’s more than a hint that Disney would like us to think of this as the new Alice In Wonderland.

It also interesting that they’ve kept the far distance looking oddly flat, which is presumably a nod to the pretty but painted on backgrounds of the classic 1939 Wizard Of Oz. However what’s more difficult to tell is whether the story is strong enough to compete with the visuals, and also whether the human characters can be fully integrated into a world that’s so reliant on special effects. We’ll have to keep out fingers crossed.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.’

It’s due out March 8th 2013.

Eight New Oz The Great & Powerful Pics Arrive

November 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

March seems an odd time to release a great big fantasy movie like Oz The Great And Powerful, but Disney had great success at that time with Alice In Wonderland, and while the March release of John Carter didn’t work out so well, they’re sticking with it for Oz. As a result they’re really getting going on the marketing, to ensure everyone knows its coming before Sam Raimi’s movie hits cinemas.

Now a octet of new images from the movie have been released many of which come from USA Today, showing us beautiful witches and James Franco having a chat with a china doll. Oh, and there’s a monkey bellboy too! There are also four pics showing off the beautiful fantasy landscapes, suggesting this is going to be a very beautiful Oz.

The USA Today articles also has Raimi talking a little about the movie, saying, “[Franco’s character Oscar Diggs] is mistaken for Oz the Great and Powerful, destined to be the next king of Emerald City. But he’s only to receive that title if he can defeat the Wicked Witch.”

He also comments on the pic of Franco and the doll, “Everything in the land, the houses and people made of china, have been broken by the Wicked Witch and her army. Oscar find the pieces of this china doll and puts them together, and hence the China Girl (voiced by Joey King) is saved. He’s telling her she has to go back to the Emerald City, where she’ll be well taken care of. But she won’t have any of it. He’s going to learn by the end of this scene that he’s not the only huckster in the bunch.”

Franco stars alongside Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. Expect it in cinemas March 8th, and a new trailer is due soon. Click on the pics below for larger versions.

Ted – Green Band Trailer

April 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Red Band trailer for Ted arrived the other day and got people very exicted for what looks like it could be a hilarious comedy from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. Now the Green Band version is here, which features largely new footage and plenty more jokes. ed revolves around an average Boston guy (Mark Wahlberg) who, when he was young, was granted his dearest wish, that his teddy bear would come to life. Years later the teddy is still his best friend, but the relationship has become strained as rather than being a sweet and nice Care Bears type creature, Ted is a carousing, irresponsible, womanising, pot-smoking slacker, who is getting in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and the girl he loves (Mila Kunis).’ A UK release is set for August 3rd.

Channing Tatum Offered The Wachowskis Jupiter Ascending

March 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Wachowskis siblings aren’t big fans of letting the world know what they’re up to, but they’re currently in post-production of Cloud Atlas, their planned ‘gay Iraq movie’ has bitten the dust due to lack of funding, and the only other thing on the horizon is a slightly mysterious sci-fi project called Jupiter Ascending.

That latter movie is now going ahead, as Deadline reports that Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis have been offered the lead roles in the film. Back in January it was rumoured that actress Natalie Portman was strongly considering the female lead, but that role has now gone to Kunis. Little has been revealed about the story line, except that it will be Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski’s first sci-fi movie since The Matrix trilogy.

The Wachowskis hope to start shooting later this year.

Mila Kunis Is Going To Hell & Back

March 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mila Kunis already has plenty of experience voicing an animated character, as she’s spent years playing Meg in Family Guy. Now she’s signed up for something a little different, as Deadline reports that Mila’s joined the cast of the R-rated stop-motion animated comedy, Hell & Back.

The film follows two best friends (Nick Swardson and T.J. Miller) who set out to rescue their buddy after he accidentally gets dragged to Hell. Kunis will play Deema, a female demon whose ability to navigate the underworld makes her the toughest rogue demon in Hell. Her independent streak come partly from her greatest secret – she’s half-human.

ShadowMachine’s Corey Campodonico has this to say about Kunis joining the film, “We’re thrilled to have Mila involved. Her unique blend of comedy and charm fits perfectly with what is sure to be one of the most memorable animated female characters in a long time,” he said.

Oprah May Return To Acting For Lee Daniels’ The Butler

February 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Oprah Winfrey was nominated for an Oscar for her movie acting debut in The Color Purple, but she’s rarely returned to the silver screen, preferring instead to get paid ludicrous amounts of money to host a chat show and then setting up her own TV station. However it appears she’s thinking about returning to acting, as THR reports that she’s considering taking a role in Lee Daniel’s The Butler.

The movie has slowly been working its way to the big screen, but like several other films Daniels (who is, incidentally, openly gay) has tried to get made since Precious, it’s been a tough slog. His civil rights drama, Selma, fell to bits despite having an incredibly starry cast, but Daniels is hoping that a bit of star power will help The Butler, as alongside Winfrey, he’s busy lining up Hugh Jackman, John Cusack, Mila Kunis and David Oyelowo.

The movie will be about Eugene Allen, an African American who worked in the White House through eight presidencies, from 1952 to 1986, going from the lowly position of pantry man to being the highest ranked butler in the house. The film is based on a series of articles about Allen and his life, written by Will Haygood.

No deals are in place for the actors, but Daniels is hoping that if he can attach their names to the movie it’ll help The Butler actually get in front of the cameras. To be honest, it’s slightly worrying that even after the success of Precious, Daniel’s is still having such incredible difficulty getting films about African Americans made. It’s not even as if he’s asking for hundreds of millions of dollars, but it appears that as soon as the subject is black people and the issues they face, the coffers dry up (unless you’ve already got a hit book like The Help to base it on).
