Fantastic Four (Cinema Review)

August 6, 2015 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Miles Teller, Toby Kebbell, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan
Director: Josh Trank
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: August 6th 2015

When even a film’s own cast start mumbling about how they haven’t seen it, that it’s probably a bit rubbish, and that it’s not a critics’ film, you know you’re in trouble. Sure enough, this latest version of a story which had a perfectly decent outing all of 10 years ago turns out to be a dud. It’s the usual reasons to blame too – a dog of a script, wooden half-hearted acting and a boring story about saving the world. To be fair, the special effects are actually pretty good, and some minor characters put in a shift, but in the preview screening people started walking out after 10 minutes.

Do we really have to go through the whole set-up of how they become the Four? Apparently we do, so we get a full hour of Teller’s Reed Richards inventing a teleportal machine which sends sand, chimps and then humans to an undiscovered planet that turns out to have an inexhaustible supply of power. He teams up with Johnny Storm (Jordan, ok), Sue Storm (Mara, half-asleep), Victor von Doom (Kebbell, chewing scenery) and his old pal Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell, adequate) to complete the work, but an accident sees Doom stranded on the planet alone while the other four return to Earth with strange powers. Rodrigo Santoro Is Jesus (In the remake of Ben-Hur)

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rodrigo-SantoroRodrigo Santoro is going from living god in the 300 movies to Son Of God in the planned remake of Ben-Hur, as he’s set to play Jesus in the movie, according to THR.

He joins Jack Huston as the title character, alongside Toby Kebbell as Messalla. While the two were friends as boys, with the coming of the Romans, Messalla betrays Ben-Hur, which results in his being sold into slavery. He then meets a character played by Morgan Freeman, who teaches him to become a champion chariot racer.

The story take place in parallel to that of Jesus, which its said will be more central to this version than the peripheral (and never properly seen) figure he was in the Oscar-winning 1959 version, hewing closer to Lew Wallace’s original 1880 novel.

Timur Bekmambetov is set to direct from a screenplay by Keith R. Clarke, with production set to kick off soon for a February 19th, 2016 release.

warcraft-character-pic1Warcraft finished shooting a while ago, but with so many special effects to finish off, it won’t be in cinemas for nearly a year and a half. The panel included Warcraft director Duncan Jones, producers Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, as well as actor Rob Kazinsky, who was on hand to introduce his character, Orgrim, as well as letting us know the other major characters along with their allegiance.

Along with that we got pics of Orgrim and King Llane, as well as some teaser poster and images of the cast. You can take a look at those below, and here’s the info released about the characters in their two groupings – The Alliance and The Horde.

Wonder Woman Gal Gadot May Be Ben-Hur’s Female Lead

October 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gal-gadotAt the moment the majority of the general public couldn’t pick Gal Gadot out of a lineup (despite the fact she’s appeared in a few Fast & Furious movies), but Hollywood is betting big on the actress. She’s already lined up to play Wonder Woman in Batman V Superman and a solo movie, and now THR reports that she’s in early talks to take the female lead in the planned remake of Ben-Hur.

Assuming she signs on, she’ll join Jack Huston as the title character, alongside Toby Kebbell as Messalla. While the two were friends as boys, with the coming of the Romans Messalla betrays Ben-Hur, which results in his being sold into slavery. He then meets a character played by Morgan Freeman, who teaches him to become a champion chariot racer.

Gadot would play a fellow slave called Esther, who Ben-Hur falls for.

The story take place in parallel to that of Jesus, which its said will be more central to this version that the peripheral (and never properly seen) figure he was in the Oscar-winning 1959 version.

Timur Bekmambetov is set to direct from a screenplay by Keith R. Clarke, with production set to kick off early next year.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Trailer – Caesar and his simian chums are building a nation

May 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Things have certainly moved on for Caesar and his chums since Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, but their relationship with the surviving humans certainly isn’t that great.

Now we can take by far our best look yet at Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes with a full trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.’

It certainly looks pretty cool. [Read more…]

Caesar Is Back In New Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Images

April 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic11Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has gotten slightly lost in the mix of big summer movies, but the same was true of the first film, which surprised many when despite relatively little buzz became a big hit.

However Fox is making sure we don’t forget about it completely as a slew of other big films are released over the coming few weeks.

Now 10 new images have arrived, along with commentary from Andy Serkis.

Take a look at the new pics below.

The humans have been wiped out from a deadly simian virus, with the highly intelligent ape Caesar ( Andy Serkis) leading an ape nation in a take over of the entire planet.

Andy Serkis reveals Caesar has grown quite a bit since the last time we saw him in 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. “We see him as a statesman and a leader and someone who has galvanized all of these apes. We see the beginning of their world.”

Director Matt Reeves comments on Caesar’s care-worn face. “You can see a real haunted quality.”

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
Andy Serkis says Caesar is not a fan of guns in the movie. “Caesar’s ethos is that apes do not like guns. He’s trying to find a peaceful accord with the humans who show up. He’s an empathetic character.”

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
Director Matt Reeves explains the story, with the few human survivors in need of electricity while the apes sort out their anti-human agenda. “In this story we are dealing with the razor’s edge of peace. Caesar struggles with the question of peace and how do you act as a father and a leader.”

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
Andy Serkis says there was an “ensemble cast” of other actors portraying primates in the film, all using motion-capture performances in outside locations such as New Orleans and the woods of Vancouver. In this story the apes have a major advantage: They don’t need the creature comforts the humans require.

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
Koba (Toby Kebbell) has a strong hatred for humans after his time in captivity, but he respects Caesar’s leadership.

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
The Apes have the capability of hydropower on their land in the Muir woods. The big question, Matt Reeves explains, is… “Can they coexist?”

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
Matt Reeves reveals that while Caesar and Koba have had their differences, Caesar is clearly the Alpha Male. “All of the apes follow Caesar with tremendous allegiance and respect. He is their king and sort of their father.

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
Malcolm, played by Jason Clarke, tries to make peace with the Apes. Both Malcolm and Caesar are fathers with wives. Says the director,

“The film centers around the notion of family. It’s the survival of family and what lengths you will go to in order to protect them.

Andy Serkis continued, “Caesar not only has a wife, but also an infant son and a teenage son. This film centers around the notion of family – the survival of the family and what lengths you would go to, to protect them when life is extremely hard and tough.”

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-pic2
Do the humans stand a chance? Maybe, maybe not explains Matt Reeves, “We all know it doesn’t become ‘Planet of the Humans and Apes,’ it becomes ‘Planet of the Apes’. But this is that one moment where there is hope for the humans.”

Toby Kebbell Or Jack Huston Could Be Frankenstein, Opposite Daniel Radcliffe’s Igor

June 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

toby-kebbellFor quite a while now, Daniel Radcliffe has been attached to 20th Century Fox’s upcoming version of Frankenstein. While the studio recently announced a release date of October 17th, 2014, there’s been no news on the rest of the cast, which is perhaps surprising as Radcliffe is playing what’s normally a side character, Igor.

However Deadline reports they’re now looking for the actor who will play Dr. Victor Frankenstein, with the two men currently leading the pack being Toby Kebbell and Jack Huston. However there’s no guarantee it’ll be either, as Fox is also looking elsewhere.

Kebbell, who made his first film appearance in the 2004 British crime thriller Dead Man Shoes, isn’t a big name, but has popped up in Oliver Stone’s Alexander, Woody Allen’s Match Point, Guy Ritchie’s Rocknrolla, and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. Many expect his star to rise next year with a major role in Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Jack Huston (who is the nephew of Anjelica Huston and Danny Huston, and grandson of director John Huston), is perhaps best known for playing the scarred Richard Harrow on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He previously worked with Radcliffe on the upcoming Kill Your Darlings, in which the two actors play Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, respectively.

Fox is hoping to sign someone within the next couple of weeks.

Chronicle’s Max Landis wrote the script for this new take on Frankenstein, with Paul McGuigan (Push) set to direct.

Garrett Hedlund, Riz Ahmed & Toby Kebbell Have Violent Talent

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Garrett Hedlund

Garrett Hedlund

Matthew Michael Carnahan has gained a decent reputation as a screenwriter, having worked on the likes of The Kingdom, State Of Play and the upcoming World War Z. Now he’s heading for the director’s chair with Violent Talent, and Deadline reports he’s lined up a decent cast, including Garrett Hedlund, Riz Ahmed, Toby Kebbell and Margot Robbie.

The film is about ‘Eamon (Hedlund), as he and his two oldest friends Angel and Quan (Kebbell and Ahmed) try to build a criminal empire in a contemporary Chicago, where he feels crime might be the most honest job around.’ There’s no in of Robbie’s character, other than that she is known as Riley.

It’s not clear at the moment when it might shoot.
