There’s one thing to be said of Ben Stiller’s reimagining of famous daydreamer Mitty – he certainly captures the mood of the times. Mitty works at Life magazine, which is going digital, and most of the staff are being laid off. The ‘digital takeover’ is being handled by Ted (a gloriously oily Adam Scott) and there are many scenes of upset worker carrying brown boxes containing their meagre possessions out of the building, security guard in tow. Billy (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Owen Wilson) are salesmen whose lives are going exactly nowhere, as their youthful dreams have been crushed by the modern world. Then Billy hears about the Google Intern programme, which promises a lucky few a job at what many consider to be the best place to work in the world. Against all odds they get on the programme and find themselves surrounded by youngsters who know far more about technology than Billy and Nick (who know the grand total of nothing), but most of whom severely lack social skills. It’s always a bit odd when you first watch a filmed recording of a stage production. Initially it’s difficult to escape the feeling you’re watching it in the wrong medium. However if done well you quickly forget that what you’re watching was designed for a theatre setting and can just enjoy the show. Thankfully that’s very true of this filmed version of the 20th Anniversary Production of Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing.
The Descendants was no doubt Oscar bound at its inception – directed and written by Alexander Payne (of Election, Sideways and About Schmidt fame) and starring one of The Oscars current favourites, George Clooney. With five nominations, the only question now is whether it’ll win.
Matthew King’s (Clooney) wife has been involved in a major accident and is on a life support machine. He is a lawyer as well as the executor of his extended family’s massive estate, even though he’s completely out of touch with his immediate family. The plot centres around Clooney coming to terms with, taking control of and understanding more about his fractured family, whilst also learning about his wife’s infidelity. [Read more…]
