The Hobbit Desolates The US Box Office With $73 Million

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-desolation-poster2There was little doubt that The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug would top the US box office this weekend. The only question was how much it would take. There was a lot of disagreement going into the weekend, with some suggesting it could take as much as $80 million, while others thought it would struggle to make $70 million.

In the end it made a strong but not as spectacular as some had expected $73.6 million. It’s certainly not a disaster, and with a strong international showing it’s likely to end up grossing around the same as the billion pounds the first movie took worldwide. It’s also true that the film faced strong holdovers from Catching Fire and Frozen, which may have affected it opening, but it should make up some US ground over the coming week.

The only other new opener was Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas, which disappointed with $16 million. Most of Perry’s other Madea movies have had $25+ million openings, so despite the festive theme, it seems audiences aren’t that interested.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 13th-15th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug $73.6 $73.6
2 Frozen $22.1 $164.3
3 Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas $16.0 $16.0
4 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $13.1 $356.9
5 Thor: The Dark World $2.7 $198.1
6 Out Of The Furnace $2.3 $9.4
7 Delivery Man $1.8 $27.9
8 Philomena $1.7 $11.0
9 The Book Thief $1,6 $14.8
10 Homefront $1.6 $18.4

White Bird in a Blizzard Trailer – Shailene Woodley stars in Gregg Araki’s latest

December 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gregg Araki was at the forefront of the Queer Cinema movement on the 1990s, and indeed all his movies since then have had an LGBT tint. However things will be less overtly gay with his latest, White Bird in a Blizzard, which is due to premiere at Sundance. Ahead of that though we’ve got our first look at the movie with a trailer.

Based on Laura Kasischke’s 1999 novel, the film a young woman who loses control of her life when her mother disappears. Shailene Woodley plays the main role, with the likes of Eva Green (as the mother), Angela Bassett, Shiloh Fernandez, Christopher Meloni and Gabourey Sidibe co-starring.

The movie will screen at Sundance, but there’s no word yet on when it will be released to general audiences. [Read more…]

December 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Next year is going to be buff and Greek, with 300: Rise Of An Empire and two Hercules movie, one starring Dwayne Johnson and the other with (a very shirtless) Kellan Lutz. Now a new trailer for the latter has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Ancient Greece 1200 B.C., a queen succumbs to the lust of Zeus to bear a son promised to overthrow the tyrannical rule of the king and restore peace to a land in hardship. But this prince, Hercules, knows nothing of his real identity or his destiny. He desires only one thing: the love of Hebe, Princess of Crete, who has been promised to his own brother. When Hercules learns of his greater purpose, he must choose: to flee with his true love or to fulfill his destiny and become the true hero of his time. The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic – a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.’

Disney Channel Plans A Film Based Around The Kids Of Classic Villains

December 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Descendants-logo
The Disney Channel has had a great idea, even if it’s going to be difficult to make it work in practice – they’re going to give it a good try though. They’ve announced they’re making a live-action TV movie called Descendants, based around the kids of Disney villains.

Casting is now underway on the film, with High School Musical helmer Kenny Ortega set to direct.

Here’s the incredibly intriguing synopsis: ‘In a present day idyllic kingdom, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic “Beauty and the Beast”) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters.

‘These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes, including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom.’

It will be difficult not to make it come across as cheesy and a bit cheap on a Disney Channel budget, but we’d imagine the House Of Mouse is already eying the merchandising potential, so they’ll probably put a lot of effort in. The hope is to have is ready to screen in early 2015.

Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor & Michael B. Jordan Are Circling Triple Nine

December 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

casey-affleckCasey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael B. Jordan are in talks to team up with the previously cast Christoph Waltz and Cate Blanchett in Triple Nine, according to TheWrap.

The movie is about a group of criminals who plan on murdering an LAPD cop (Casey Affleck), as they think this will divert attention away from the massive heist they are planning on the other side of town. Ejiofor will be the criminal mastermind behind the whole operation, while Michael B. Jordan is set to be a dirty cop who sets up Casey Affleck’s character.

Affleck is set replace Charlie Hunnam who was in talks to join the cast this summer. However the Sons Of Anarchy actor has since moved on. Cate Blanchett’s involvement however hinges on scheduling. John Hillcoat is directing from a screenplay by Matt Cook. The title, Triple Nine, refers to the police code for when an officer needs immediate assistance.

Ed Helms To Be Frank Drebin In The Naked Gun Reboot

December 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ed-helmsEd Helms was supposed to be rebooting the Vacation franchise, but that movie has been put on hold indefinitely. However it seems he’s still keen to take something from the 80s and give a new take, as Variety reports that he’s joined a remake of The Naked Gun spoof series.

Reno 911! creators Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have been brought on to write the screenplay, with Ed Helms playing Detective Frank Drebin, as originally played by Leslie Nielsen. There are rumours however that it may be a little different to the original movies and that it won’t be a straightforward police procedural.

Naked Gun began with the short-lived TV series Police Squad!, which was created by the team behind the spoof masterpiece Airplane!. It was cancelled after just six episodes in 1982, but a few years later in 1988 it took to the big screen as The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad. That spawned the sequels The Naked Gun 2½ in 1991 and Naked Gun 33 1/3 in 1994.

At the moment the remake doesn’t have a director attached and it isn’t known when production may begin.

It’s eight years since Sin City was released, and ever since then we’ve been promised a follow-up. It’s certainly taken its time, and even after filming took place, it’s still been quite a wait, and indeed we won’t be getting to see it until next August.

However now the first official poster has arrived, which doesn’t exactly give us a lot of information, other than that it’s got a great cast.

The sequel features the return of Sin City stars Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis and Rosario Dawson, along with newcomers such as Jamie Chung, Alexa Vega and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. A first trailer is expected soon.

Emilia Clarke Joins Terminator: Genesis As Sarah Connor

December 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emilia-ClarkeA few days ago it was revealed that Jason Clarke is in talks to play John Connor in Terminator: Genesis. Now it’s been revealed that the film has found his mother in the form of Game Of Thrones star Emilia Clarke (and yes, she is 20 years younger than her on-screen son), according Deadline.

Clarke beat out Brie Larson, who was the other top contender for the role. No story details have been revealed yet, although there’s certainly going to have to be some time-travelling involved, with the suggestion the movie will involve Sarah at a time shortly before the first of the Terminator movies, and that this time she may be travelling to the future to meet her son in the form of Jason Clarke.

The movie is also seeking an actor to play Kyle Reese, John Connor’s father, who was portrayed by Michael Biehn in The Terminator.

Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is directing from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. It isn’t known when filming will begin.
