Clint Eastwood In Talks To Helm American Sniper, Replacing Steven Spielberg

clint-eastwoodEarlier today, rumours emerged that Clint Eastwood may be thinking about replacing Steven Spielberg as the director of American Sniper, with THR reporting that Clint is indeed in talks for the movie, which has Bradley Cooper attached to write and direct.

Spielberg left earlier this month as he and the studio couldn’t come to agreement on a budget that he felt would do justice to the story he wanted to tell. Clint on the other hand is famed for sticking to fairly low budgets.

The action movie is based on the autobiography of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, a Texas native who racked up the most confirmed sniper kills of anyone in US military history. Tragically though, he was killed by a fellow veteran at a shooting range last February (it’s not clear if that will be included in the movie).

Filming had tentatively been scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2014, but they may change if Clint signs on, as he’s currently gearing up to shoot the musical Jersey Boys. He does work quickly, so it is possible he can fit in a shoot for American Sniper early next year too.

Marion Cotillard To Be Lady Macbeth Opposite Michael Fassbender

marion-cotillardA few months ago Natalie Portman signed up to star in a new film version of Shakepeare’s Macbeth, but now she’s dropped out and Variety reports that they’re replaced one Best Actress Oscar winner with another, as Marion Cotillard has taken over the role.

Michael Fassbender is still attached to the title role, in a film that retains the 11th Century setting of the play. It follows a cunning Scottish Lord who plot to steal the throne, with the help of his wife and a trio of witches. The screenplay is said to take a visceral approach to the battle scenes, while keeping most of the original dialogue intact. The script was written by Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff (The Marc Pease Experience), although it will retain Shakespeare’s actual words.

“Cotillard has proven extraordinary versatility through her stunning performances in La Vie En Rose and Rust And Bone. Casting her as Lady Macbeth alongside Michael Fassbender will bring a fresh and exciting dynamic to the story of lovers pulled apart by war and ambition,” said producer Iain Canning.

Director Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) added, “She is one of the bravest and most compelling actors I have watched in recent years and I cannot wait to collaborate with both her and Michael in bringing to screen this very human and tragic love story.”

Sylvester Stallone In Talks For Rambo TV Series

Sylvester-Stallone-RamboWith Sylvester Stallone’s movie career still going strong, you might not think he’d want to go to TV, but now Entertainment One (eOne) has announced that it has firmed up a co-development pact with Avi Lerner (Rambo, The Expendables) and Nu Image to develop and produce a television series based on the legendary action movie, Rambo.

More surprising is that the parties are currently in negotiations with Sylvester Stallone to be involved with the project on a creative level as well as potentially reprise his iconic role as the original Rambo. That’s not to say he’ll be the main character in every episode, but he could well show up.

Rambo is a cult classic series of movies starring Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo. Based on the David Morell novel First Blood, the first film is about a troubled Vietnam War veteran and former Green Beret who is skilled in many aspects of survival, weaponry, hand to hand combat and guerrilla warfare. The series continued with Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III and Rambo.

Avi Lerner commented, “I’m happy to be partnering with a prolific company like Entertainment One who has a track record of creating high quality programming for their broadcast partners around the world. And I’m excited by the prospect of collaborating again with my good friend Sly for an encore in this next phase of the Rambo legacy.”

There’s no news on how the TV show will work, but under their exclusive option arrangement, the partners will collectively develop the series and shop it to broadcasters in the US and internationally.

Sherlock Holmes’ Guy Ritchie Takes On Empire Rising

guy-ritchieGuy Ritchie is set to start shooting The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in a few weeks time, but he’s already looking to the future. Warner Bros. has snapped up the rights to Thomas Kelly’s 2006 novel Empire Rising, with Ritchie set to produce and possibly directing, according to THR.

The description of the book says, ‘It is 1930, and ground has just been broken for the Empire State Building. One of the thousands of men who will come to work high above the city is Michael Briody, an Irish immigrant torn between his desire to make a new life in America and his pledge to gather money and arms for the Irish republican cause. When he meets Grace Masterson, an alluring artist who is depicting the great skyscraper’s rise from her houseboat on the East River, Briody’s life suddenly turns exhilarating — and dangerous – -for Grace is also a paramour of Johnny Farrell, Mayor Jimmy Walker’s liaison with Tammany Hall and the underworld.’

Author Kelly will also write the screenplay adaptation. Don’t expect it to shoot for a while yet, as not only does Ritchie has Man From U.N.C.L.E., he’s also pondering another Sherlock Holmes and a new take on Treasure Island.

Rachel McAdams Joins James Franco In Every Thing Will Be Fine

rachel-mcadamsThe cast of Wim Wenders’ Every Thing Will Be Fine has grown with James Franco being joined by Rachel McAdams, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Robert Naylor, according to THR.

Franco is set to play a grief-stricken man who is responsible for the accidental death of a young boy. He uses his guilt to launch a successful writing career, although as he becomes more and more famous, he ‘represses and rejects the emotional connection he has to the boy’s brother and mother in the years after the accident’.

Rachel McAdams is playing the writer’s girlfriend, who is trying to deal with his crumbling mental state. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the boy’s mother, with Robert Naylor portraying his brother, who reaches out to the author 10 years after the accident.

Wim Wenders is directing from a screenplay by Bjorn Olaf Johannessen, with shooting already under way in Montreal.

Idris Elba Takes The Leads In Beasts Of No Nation

Idris-ElbaIdris Elba’s star continues to rise, with the news that he’s scored the lead role in Cary Fukunaga’s (Jane Eyre) upcoming adaptation Beasts of No Nation, according to Deadline.

Based on Uzodinma Iweala’s novel, the movie centres on a young boy named Agu. After facing the death of his father and disappearance of his mother and sister, he is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters during a civil war in West Africa. He finds a friend in a mute boy named Strika and they team to face the hardships of the civil war. Idris Elba is playing the lead role of the Commander.

Cary Fukunaga is directing, although it’s not clear when the movie might shoot.

Christina Hendricks Is Going To Dark Places With Charlize Theron & Nicholas Hoult

Christina-HendricksGilles Paquet-Brenner already has Charlize Theron, Chloe Moretz, Corey Stoll and Nicholas Hoult attached to star in his upcoming drama Dark Places, and now he’s added another, as Deadline reports that Mad Men star Christina Hendricks has signed up for the movie.

The movie is about Libby Day (Charlize Theron), who at the age of seven witnessed her mother and two sisters being murdered in The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas. After surviving this horrific ordeal, she testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben (Corey Stoll), was the killer. However, as an adult she begins to believe that someone else may have been responsible.

Christina Hendricks play Krissi, a stripper with a dark secret.

Gilles Paquet-Brenner is directing from a script he wrote. The project is based on a novel written by author Gillian Flynn.

Fresh The Counselor Trailer – New look at Fassbender, Diaz & Pitt in Ridley Scott’s movie

The Counselor certainly has a great cast, including Michael Fassbender,  Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt and John Leguizamo. It also look like Ridley is channelling some of his late brother’s heightened visual style for the movie, as you can see in this new trailer.

Based on the first original feature script by Cormac McCarthy, The Counselor tells the story of a lawyer (Fassbender), who finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking.

Kit Harington Shows Off His Abs In A First Look At Pompeii

Kit Harington is going from TV’s Game Of Thrones from the movies with Pompeii, Paul WS Anderson’s film centred on the fateful volcanic eruption. Now the first image from the movie has arrived, via EW, showing Harington and his rather impressive abs.

“This is the first scene you see me in,” commented Harington. “It’s set in London, in fact, and it’s a scene where my character is a gladiator fighting in an arena. That’s his gladiator look. It’s a great little fight against three masked gladiators and sets up who he is and where he’s going. You see me display my skills quite early on. It’s a costume I don’t actually wear for the rest of the film, but it’s an establishing one.”

That last sentence is likely to upset some.

The movie is set days before the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It centres on former slave Milo (Harington), who must race to save his true love Flavia (Emily Browning). Jessica Lucas is playing a slave who is a confidante to Flavia. Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje also star.

Janet Scott Batchler and Lee Batchler wrote the original screenplay, which was recently revised by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. It’s due out early next year.

First Look At Steve Carell (& His Prosthetic Nose) In Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher has been in the works for a long time, and even when they had a cast including Steve Carell and Channing Tatum lined up they had to wait ages to shoot until the funding came together. Now it’s in the can and on its way to US cinemas later this year.

EW has debuted the first picture from the film which, as you can see, features Steve Carell sporting a prosthetic honker.

The drama is based on the true tale of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), who was murdered by his paranoid schizophrenic friend Jon Du Pont (Steve Carell) in 1996. Du Pont was an heir to the Du Pont chemical company, who teamed up with Dave’s brother Mark (Tatum) to build a wrestling training facility known as ‘Team Foxcatcher’ on his sprawling Pennsylvania estate. The Schultzes tried to get Du Pont help for years before the murder. Sienna Miller plays Nancy, Doug Schultz’s wife
