Jackie Chan Up For Major Role In Expendables 3

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s little surprise that with films like The Expendables movies, there’s a bit of confusion who will star in any of the films while they’re being put together, as getting a great roster of action veterans together is tough, especially without a gargantuan budget.

Now Jackie Chan himself has been confirmed that he’s up for a fairly substantial role in The Expendables 3, telling Cinema Online, “Sly had invited me to be in The Expendables 2 but I was too busy filming Chinese Zodiac and couldn’t make a commitment to the film. But he did extend his invitation to the third movie, which I agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes.”

jackie-chan-pic1It’s been suggested that Jackie Chan has requested that this next film be a buddy-buddy movie, and that Sylvester Stallone has agreed to that request, and apparently the screenplay is being rewritten to meet this specified criteria.

It’s not Stallone and Chan’s first film together, as they previously appeared together in a spoof action film-within-a-film, alongside Whoopi Goldberg, in the box office bomb An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn.

Chan also revealed that he’s currently working on a movie that at the moment is an original script but could turn into Rush Hour 4. However he seems in two minds about this, saying “The script is currently [being] viewed by Chris Tucker. Personally, I feel that if he were to pick it up, it would be better if we turned it into Rush Hour 4 but I do think that three movies for the franchise is a perfect ending. It would be better to start a new buddy movie with someone new.”

A Haunted House Red Band Trailer – Marlon Wayans is back in Scary Movie territory

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Wayans Brothers had great success with the Scary Movie franchise, but Shawn and Marlon Wayans left that series behind after the second movie. However Marlon still thinks there’s money to be made in horror parodies, so he’s co-written and stars in A Haunted House, which takes Paranormal Activity as its main target of fun.

The new red band trailer doesn’t exactly make it look like a comedy masterpiece, but then Scary Movie wasn’t exactly great, but still proved popular.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In an outrageous send up of the Paranormal Activity movies, The Devil Inside and other “found footage” movies, A HAUNTED HOUSE features young couple Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) who have just moved in to their dream house. As they settle in, they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that’s haunted, it’s Malcolm’s girlfriend who is possessed by a demon. Malcolm hires everyone from a priest to modern day ghostbusters to rid her of this unwelcome intruder, determined not to let the evil spirit ruin his relationship… or, more importantly, his sex life.’ No UK release date is set yet, but it reaches US cinemas January 11th.

Michael Apted Takes On Hilary Mantel’s Eight Months on Ghazzah Street

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-aptedHilary Mantel is now best known as the double Booker Prize winning author of Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, but back in 1988 she wrote Eight Months On Grazzah Street, based on her own experiences as a westerner living in Saudi Arabia.

ScreenDaily reports that Gorillas In The Mist and Dawn Treader helmer Michael Apted is now planning to bring the book to the screen.

Here’s the synopsis from Amazon, ‘Frances Shore is a cartographer by trade, a maker of maps, but when her husband’s work takes her to Saudi Arabia she finds herself unable to map the Kingdom’s areas of internal darkness. The regime is corrupt and harsh, the expatriates are hard-drinking money-grubbers, and her Muslim neighbours are secretive, watchful. The streets are not a woman’s territory; confined in her flat, she finds her sense of self begin to dissolve. She hears whispers, sounds of distress from the ’empty’ flat above her head. She has only rumours, no facts to hang on to, and no one with whom to share her creeping unease. As her days empty of certainty and purpose, her life becomes a blank – waiting to be filled by violence and disaster.’

While in the novel the main character is British, Apted wants to make her American in the movie, hoping that despite Mantel’s book being 25 years old, this will make it seem even more prescient. He comments, “I’ve made lots of films about women and their changing role in society, so I’m interested in looking at this subject in the Middle East. I think that’s the interesting story here, not spies or terrorists. [The project] isn’t critical of the Middle East; if anything it’s slightly anti-American.”

Although saying your film is anti-American perhaps isn’t the best idea while you’re still looking for funding, it certainly sounds like it could be an interesting movie. Black Rain screenwriter Craig Bolotin is writing the script, and the filmmakers are currently scouting locations in Jordan, where Apted hopes to film the movie. Incidentally, the title is likely to change before it reaches cinemas.

Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Mary-Louise Parker Back In First Red 2 Pic

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

red-2-pic1
Red grossed $200 million worldwide on a budget of $58 million, and so it’s not too surprising that Summit Entertainment wants a sequel. That movie has recently been shooting, and now the first image has arrived via EW, with Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Mary Louise Parker all back in the action.

Helen Mirren is also returning, and this time around is joined by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anthony Hopkins, Byung-hun Lee and David Thewlis. Not too much info has been released about the plot, although we’d love to know why Malkovich is wearing a kilt and Willis seems to be rocking the pyjamas look.

It’s due in cinemas August 2nd, 2013.

First Hangover Part III Image Pays Tribute To The Beatles

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hangover-part-3-pic1
The Hangover trilogy rounds out with Part III on May 24th, 2013, which sees the Wolf Pack returning to Las Vegas for a final blow-out. Now the first image from the movie has been released, which slightly randomly pays tribute to the Beatles and their famous Abbey Road image.

There’s also a second image, which you can see below, where Ken Jeong is back as Mr. Chow, who is seen impersonating a sheriff.

Todd Phillips once more directs, with Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha back to star. It’s safe to safe that their return to Vegas is just as crazy as their previous adventure. (Images via EW)

Scott Speedman & Mireille Enos Join Queen of the Night

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scott-SpeedmanMireille Enos and Scott Speedman have joined Ryan Reynolds in director Atom Egoyan’s dramatic new movie, the psychological thriller Queen of the Night, according to Deadline.

Reynolds will play a father who goes in search of his missing daughter. While the girl was eight at the time of her abduction, her dad gets new information about the case almost nine years later, which leads him to think his daughter is still alive.

Mireille Enos will be Reynolds wife, who always checks in with the police on her missing daughter’s birthday. She realises that disturbing memorabilia left at her workplace are clues leading to her daughter’s whereabouts. Speedman – who’s just got a lot more spare time to take the role as his TV series Last Resort has been cancelled – will play the cop assigned to the missing girl’s case.

Both of these actors are Egoyan veterans, as Enos recently worked with him on Devil’s Knot, while Speedman appears in the Canadian helmer’s Adoration. Atom Egoyan wrote the original screenplay with David Fraser, with plans to shoot early next year in Ontario.

Hobbit Takes December US Box Office Record With $84m

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Hobbit-poster-1There was no doubt that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey would top US the box office in its first weekend of release. The only real question was how big it would be. The film has taken $84.7 million in its first three days, which is a record for a December weekend, beating out the opening of I Am Legend, which took $77.2 million back in 2007.

Despite this, some are still seeing The Hobbit as an underperformer, simply because many thought it should have cracked $100 million. However December is an unusual month as while most of the year you have to get what you can in the first few days and then hope the drop off is slow, the festive season tends to give movies longer legs than they’d usually have, and so The Hobbit is likely to continue to find audiences through the New Year, especially as it’s getting strong word of mouth.

As for whether the higher frame rate screenings have made a difference, Warner hasn’t released a breakdown, although 49% of tickets were sold across all the 3D playdates, and IMAX has reported a significantly higher per screen average for venues showing the movie at 48fps. Anecdotal evidence suggests there’s still confusion over the format, and that some people are being put off by bad notices given to HFR and are assuming all screenings are in that format, while others apparently don’t realise HFR is also in 3D.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 14th-16th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $84.7 $84.7
2 Rise Of The Guardians $7.4 $71.3
3 Lincoln $7.2 $107.9
4 Skyfall $7.0 $272.2
5 Life Of Pi $5.4 $69.5
6 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $5.1 $276.8
7 Wreck-It Ralph $3.2 $168.7
8 Playing For Keeps $3.2 $10.8
9 Red Dawn $2.3 $40.8
10 Silver Linings Playbook $2.0 $16.9

Alicia Vikander Joins Benedict Cumberbatch In WikiLeaks Movie

December 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Alicia-VikanderDreamworks’ Wikileaks movie continues to come together, with Variety reporting that Anna Karenina star Alicia Vikander has entered negotiations to star in the movie for director Bill Condon.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in the film, which follow the rise and fall of his controversial website. Alicia Vikander will play one of his co-workers and eventual love interest. Daniel Bruhl (who recently replaced James McAvoy) is also onboard to play Daniel Domscheit-Berg, whose departure from the site in 2011 – due to major philosophical and journalistic differences – is credited as one of the main reasons that thousands of secret international cables were leaked, which led to massive international controversy.

Bill Condon is directing from a screenplay by Josh Singer, which is adapted from Daniel Domscheit-Berg’s book Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange At The World’s Most Dangerous Website and WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy by David Leigh and Luke Harding. Jon Bernthal Joins Sylvester Stallone & Robert De Niro In Grudge Match

December 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jon-BernthalGetting Rocky and Jake La Motta in the ring is a fun idea, and that’s what’s happening in Grudge Match, where Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro will be boxing one another. Now they’ve got some younger company, as Variety reports that Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal has joined the cast.

The film is about two retired boxers (De Niro and Stallone) who step back into the ring to settle an old score. Jon Bernthal will play De Niro’s estranged son, who feels conflicted about training his father. Kevin Hart, Kim Basinger, and Alan Arkin have also signed on to star.

Peter Segal is directing, with shooting is scheduled to begin next year in Louisiana.

New Zero Dark Thirty Trailer – Fresh look at Kathryn Bigelow’s acclaimed film

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now a new trailer has arrived to give us a fresh look at the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military operatives, working in secret across the globe, devoted themselves to a single goal: to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden.
