First Pacific Rim Footage Hits – Monsters are attacking San Francisco

One of the big summer blockbuster bets of next year is Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. It’s out July 12th, but so far we’ve seen little from it, other than a few relatively nondescript pictures. Now the first footage has shown up online, allied to a viral site that’s just launched.

There are two vids, one a ‘Test of the Kaiju Emergency Alert System’, which is little more than a test card, while the other is a news report about giant monsters attacke San Francisco. As monsters, aliens and the likes have an inborn hatred of world famous landmarks (according to the movies, anyway), it doesn’t bode well for the Golden gate Bridge.

It’s not clear if this is footage from the actual movie or specially created viral marketing footage. Either way we get our first look at the 300ft Kaiju monsters, that in the film come through some sort of portal in the Pacific. Mankind’s only way to respond if putting human pilots in massive robots, who take on this deadly threat. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi star.

George Clooney & Paul Greengrass Plan A Heist Movie

It almost seems pointless reporting that Paul Greengrass is planning a movie, as he loves developing films, the vast majority of which he leaves behind for one reason or another (usually due to his vision and that of the studio diverging). However as things stand, THR reports that Greengrass is teaming up with George Clooney for a heist movie.

Argo writer Chris Terrio is on scripting duties. He’s worked with Clooney and Greengrass before, as at one point the duo picked up the rights to the article that turned into Argo and set Terrio to write it – but once more Greengrass moved on, as did Clooney. Apparently the movie has been in the works for quite a while, but it’s has to wait for everyone to be free to develop it before it’s moved forward.

Unfortunately there are no plot details at the moment, other than it’s a heist film.

Don’t expect it anytime soon though (and that’s even presuming Greegrass stays onboard), as the director is busy finishing of modern day pirate drama Captain Philips, and also has Barca up his sleeve, while Clooney is set to helm Monuments Men.

Joel Edgerton, Jim Sturgess & More Testing For Guardians of the Galaxy

While most of Marvel’s Phase 2 plans involve continuing the franchises they’ve already started – Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers – they’re also taking a gamble on another superhero team, Guardian Of The Galaxy.

Now they’re starting to put the cast together, with Deadline reporting that Joel Edgerton, Jim Sturgess, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne have signed deals to audition for the role of Guardians leader Peter Quill.

James Marsden, Garrett Hedlund, and Sullivan Stapleton have also reportedly shown interest in the role, although it is not known if they are planning to audition. It’s an interestingly diverse bunch of actors, none of whom are household names but represent very different physical types and range in age from early 20s to late 30s.

Peter Quill is a former NASA astronaut who eventually comes to learn that his father is an alien, which leads him into outer space. Armed with a sentient ship and a suit that enhances his strength, Quill eventually transforms into the Star-Lord.

James Gunn is due to direct the movie, which already has a release date set of August 1st, 2014. When it was first announced, it looked like the movie would be CGI, but it now appears it will indeed by live action. There’s no news either on whether this will be tied into the other Marvel movies or stand alone (as Thor 2 takes the God to more realms, it could give an opportunity for an early crossover, but that hasn’t been confirmed).

Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Films May Be Spin-Offs

It seems Disney is keeping its options open with Star Wars. Shortly after they bought Lucasfilm, it was revealed that Michael Arndt had worked on a treatment for Episodes VII-IX and is now busy putting together the screenplay for part 7. Soon after news came through that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg had been hired to write Star Wars scripts, which at the time were said to be Episode VIII and Episode IX.

That was never confirmed by Disney, and it appears the reason for that is because they may not be writing Episodes in the core Skywalker saga after all. According to THR, insiders claim that the writers will be working on separate projects that may either turn out to be used as the sequel scripts that will continue the Skywalker storyline, or potential spin-offs focusing on side characters.

Disney isn’t saying anything officially at the moment, but it looks like they’re hoping to ape what they’ve done with the Marvel universe to create inter-connected Star Wars movies, some of them official core films and others going off in different directions. The studio hopes for a new film every two or three years.

Charlize Theron Moves Forward With Sympathy for Lady Vengeance Remake

There was a lot of annoyance amongst fans about Hollywood’s decision to remake Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy (initially with Spielberg directing, but now with Spike Lee). It’s difficult to imagine they’ll be that much happier about the news that Charlize Theron’s production company is partnering with CJ Entertainment and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures to produce an adaptation of Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

Theron first showed interest in a remake in 2008, but it’s only now the project is moving forward and she’s agreed to star as well as produce, with William Monahan (The Departed) handling the script. Lady Vengeance is the story of a woman who, for reasons of her own, completes a prison term for a murder she did not commit, reemerging to punish the killer and avenge the dead.

Monahan has commented that his take, “Will be very American – and very unexpected. Park is a genius; it’s the Everest of adaptations and I’ve got blood in my teeth to do it.”

There’s no news on when this film might go intro production, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they wait to see how Spike Lee’s Oldboy does when it’s released released late 2013 before they decide whether to go ahead. (Source: THR)

James Cameron To Finally Shoot Avatar 2 & 3 Late 2013

James Cameron was a surprise guest at The Hobbit World Premiere in New Zealand (although perhaps not too much of a surprise, as he advised Peter Jackson on the use of 3D). He may have been there for Middle Earth but what people really wanted to know about is Avatar 2 and Avatar 3. While he was at the premiere he revealed that he hopes to finish the screenplays by February and start production by the end of 2013.

“I want to get these scripts nailed down, I don’t want to be writing the movie in post production. We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and so on and I don’t want to do that again.”

Last April, Cameron’s producing partner Jon Landau said that Avatar 2 might not make its proposed December 2014 release date. If shooting doesn’t begin until the late 2013, it seems almost certain we won’t get Avatar 2 until 2015 at the earliest, considering how much post-production work the movies require.

Cameron also believes that Peter Jackson’s use of the 48 frames per second frame rate will lead the way for his Pandora-set sequels, “If there is acceptance of 48, then that will pave the way for Avatar (sequels) to take advantage of it. We charged out ahead on 3D with Avatar, now Peter’s doing it with The Hobbit. It takes that kind of bold move to make change.” (Source: The West Australian)

Hugh Jackman May Play Wolverine In X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Just yesterday it was revealed that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will be back as Professor X and Magneto in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, playing opposite their younger counterparts, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Now comes the news, via THR, that Hugh Jackman is in talks to return as Wolverine for the movie.

Of course, he very briefly turned up in X-Men: First Class, where he gave short shrift to Professor X and Magneto’s attempts to recruit him to their mutant team. He would be an interesting addition to the film, as the plot features time travel, and as Wolverine doesn’t age (or at least does so very slowly) he would look pretty much the same in both timelines.

The story sees the First Class mutants getting involved with time travel in order to prevent a terrifying future from taking place. In the comic book story arc, that future sees mutants being hunted and killed, with the survivors rounded up by Sentinels and kept in concentration camps. However if a key event can be prevented, that won’t happen. Although it hasn’t been confirmed this will be the plot of the movie, it seems likely.

The likes of Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawrence will also return, with shooting scheduled for early next year. Bryan Singer directs, with a July 18th, 2014 release date set.

Daniel Bruhl Replaces James McAvoy In The WikiLeaks Movie

It’s only a few weeks since James McAvoy entered talks to star in Dreamworks’ Untitled WikiLeaks Project, but now the actor has dropped out, due to the fact he couldn’t work the film around his commitments to shoot X-Men: Days Of Future Past early next year. The filmmakers have moved fast to replace him with Inglourious Basterds star Daniel Brühl, according to THR.

Brühl will play Daniel Domscheit-Berg, who was the right hand man of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Domscheit-Berg’s departure from the website is credited as one of the many reasons why thousands of diplomatic cables were leaked in September 2011, which lead to Julian Assange’s (at least partial) downfall. Although Berg initially agreed with Assange’s mission to reveal things governements were trying to keep secret, he began to have major problems with the Wikileaks’ head lack of journalistic integrity and potentially dangerous actions.

Bill Condon is directing from an adapted screenplay by Josh Singer, based on Domscheit-Berg’s book, Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange At The World’s Most Dangerous Website, as well as WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy by British jorunalists David Leigh and Luke Harding. There were reports that Laura Linney was circling a role as a State Department official, but she is not in talks to join the project (although there is interest in her). DreamWorks has put the project on the fast track, with production to begin in January.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey World Premiere Highlights

Last night (which of course was day on the other side of the world), the World Premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey took place in Wellington, New Zealand. Large chunks of the city were turned into Middle Earth for the event, in appreciation of the boost all things Lord Of The Rings have given to the country since Peter Jackson first decided to shoot the movie in his home nation over a decade ago.

Of course The Hobbit movies returned to New Zealand and much of the cast was in Wellington for the premiere, and you can see what they have to say in this highlights video.

The screening has led to rave reviews, suggesting that Jackson is onto another winner, and there’s also been praise for the decision to use a higher frame rate. While some criticised it when footage was shown at Comic Con, saying that while the 3D was better the look was too sharp, those at the premiere were duly impressed. Director Bryan Singer, who also saw the movie last night, admitted to having frame rate envy.

The movie hits cinemas on December 13th, when we’ll be able to see whether the premiere audience was right.

Love Is All You Need Trailer – Susanne Bier teams up with Pierce Brosnan

Susanne Bier (After The Wedding, Brothers, Things We Lost In The Fire) isn’t known for being the cheeriest of directors, but she’s heading in a slightly more rom-com direction with Love Is All You Need, although still with plenty of bittersweet middle-aged angst. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Philip (Pierce Brosnan), an Englishman living in Denmark, is a lonely, middle-aged widower and estranged single father. Ida (Trine Dyrholm) is a Danish hairdresser, recuperating from chemotherapy, who has just learned that her husband is leaving her for a woman half his age from the accounts department. The fates of these two bruised souls are about to intertwine as they embark for Italy to attend the wedding of his son, Patrick, to her daughter, Astrid. With warmth, affection and confidence, Susanne Bier has shaken a cocktail of love, loss, absurdity, humour and delicately drawn characters that will leave only the hardest heart untouched. It is a film about the simple yet profound pains and joys of moving on – and forward – with your life.’
