Will Joseph Gordon-Levitt Play Batman In Justice League?

November 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago, George Miller was planning a Justice League movie that would feature Batman and Superman, but would feature completely different actors in those roles than in the stand-alone films, with a separate continuity. When Warner Bros announced a few months back they were resurrecting the idea of a Justice League film, it wasn’t clear if this would tie into Man Of Steel and Nolan’s Batman film or not.

Now it seems they might, as talking to the New York Post, Man Of Steel director Zack Snyder says about Justice League, “They trust me to keep them on course” for that film. That may be talking in the vaguest of terms, but it’s a long way from a few months ago, when he said, “What they’ll do with Justice League will be its own thing with its own Batman and own Superman.”

Although he doesn’t confirm anything, it does suggest Cavill may now be playing Superman in both Man Of Steel and Justice League – something Warner could easily do as they signed Cavill to a multi-film deal when he agreed to the role.

But what about Batman? Well, the idea of Christian Bale coming back is very, very unlikely, but what about Joseph Gordon Levitt, who after Dark Knight Rises could easily don the cowl? According to Hitfix, that’s the current thinking at Warner Bros. Hitfix says JGL is already set for Justice League (although it may not be as definite as they suggest), and could even pop up in Man Of Steel, with Warner/DC essentially starting to build their own Marvel style cross-over universe. We’ll have to wait and see though.

The Avengers has certainly shaken up the superhero world, with everyone else now racing to build their own connected universe. Even Fox is trying to find continuity by hiring Mark Millar to oversee the properties it owns, such as X-Men and Fantastic Four.

Justice League is currently planned for release in 2015.

Iron Man 3 Is Not a ‘Serious’ Movie, Producer Kevin Feige Says

November 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While everyone loved The Avengers, it certainly had a different tone to the deliberately light and fun Iron Man movies. With the success of the superhero mash-up and a change of director for Iron Man 3 – along with a first trailer that was rather dark – many wondered if they were going to go more serious with this new movie.

However producer Kevin Feige has now suggested it’s going to stay relatively light. In an interview with the West Australian (via Coming Soon), he says, “It’s not a serious movie, but we seriously dig into exploring more of Tony. The trick is just trying to make great movies. We try to make them all great, all different and all fresh. What you’ll see in Iron Man 3 is some very unique directions that were taken.”

However The Avengers will have changed Tony Stars, with Fiege telling Empire (via Collider), “By the end of Avengers, when a portal is opened up in Manhattan and he’s met Thor and The Hulk and the Chitauri are coming down on him. he realizes that he doesn’t know everything; we think that has had an effect on his psyche, and then his world is blown out from underneath him.”

That said, don’t expect any other superheroes in this one, “Iron Man 3 doesn’t feature any of the other Avengers, or Nick Fury showing up, or any of those world-blending conceits that the Phase One films had. You have to keep in mind that Iron Man 3 had been in the works for almost a year, year and a half before The Avengers was released. We’re sticking to the vision for these films, and showing once again that these characters are just as interesting alone as they are together.”

Even so, don’t rule out some links to other movies, or at least hints as where Phase Two is heading. Iron Man 3 hits cinemas on April 26th, 2013.

Ben Mendlesohn Will Find How To Catch A Monster, In Ryan Gosling’s Film

November 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Gosling is busy putting together his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster, and he’s added a new piece to the puzzle, casting Animal Kingdom and Dark Knight Rises star Ben Mendelsohn in the movie, according to Moviehole.

It’s not the first time they’ve worked together, as they recently starred alongside one another in Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond The Pines.

How to Catch a Monster weaves elements of fantasy noir and suspense into a modern day fairytale. Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy (Christina Hendricks), a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive. It all sounds a bit weird, but hopefully Gosling’s script (yep, he wrote it too) will make sense when we see the movie.

It’s not clear who Mendelsohn will play.

Cameras are set to start rolling next May.

Star Trek Into Darkness Official Synopsis Arrives

November 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

JJ Abrams is a big fan of secrecy, and so it’s often difficult to get any information about projects he’s working on. With some, such as Cloverfield, he’s even tried to maintain secrecy after the film was released. However some info always slips out, and with a franchise as big as Star Trek, it’s little surprise the studio wants to give out at least a little info.

Now the official synopsis has arrived (via The Film Stage), which may not be a point-by-point breakdown, but certainly let’s us now the broad strokes. It says, ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

‘With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.’

It’s slightly awkwardly worded, seemingly because they’re trying to give us info while not revealing anything about the villain themselves. All we know is they’re being played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

The film hits cinemas May 17th, 2013, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin all returning.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire Arena Scenes Being Shot in IMAX

November 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last June, Lionsgate revealed that portions of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be shot in the IMAX format. Now, star Josh Hutcherson revealed that it’s all scenes in the games arena that will be shot in IMAX.

In an interview with MTV, he says, “They’re shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX. So when you go see it in IMAX, you’ll see the regular movie when we’re in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It’s very cool.”

The production recently moved from Atlanta to Hawaii, so they can shoot the jungle scenes in director Francis Lawrence’s sequel (each Hunger Games arena is different, with this one having a jungle-covered area).

The actor also spoke about the watery Cornucopia set that they built in Atlanta, “They actually built a cornucopia in Atlanta that we shot at, and it looks amazing, and the way that the spokes got out, and the way everyone comes up on the pedestals and the water – it looks incredible,” he gushed. “I’ve seen some of the CG renderings that [director] Francis [Lawrence] has worked on, and they look really, really great.”

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes to theaters December 22nd, 2013.

New The Hobbit Post-Production Blog – The rush to finish the first film is on

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you thought the fact it’s been 18 months since shooting first started on The Hobbit movies means there’s been plenty of time to get the first of the three film ready for release, think again. Peter Jackson has released a new video blog and says “I really need a nap mode,” as he’s so busy getting it ready for its New Zealand premiere on November 28th.

The blog give shows that after the massive scope of the actual shoots, it’s now down to Jackson and his editor holed up in a room putting everything together, and sorting out all the incredibly complex special effects shots. The video shows us the pipeline that produces those effects, with everyone ridiculously hard at work trying to get things finished. It’s well worth a look to see just what a mammoth task making a movie like this is, and that no matter how fatastical the movie, it’s all down to talented people in the end.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits cinemas on December 14th.

Matthias Schoenaerts Joins Michelle Williams In Suite Francaise

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts has been having success over the last few months opposite Marion Cotillard in Jacques Audiard’s Rust & Bone, and now he’s got a new project up his sleeve, as the Daily Mail reports he’s joined the cast of Suite Francaise, which already has Michelle Williams and Kristin Scott Thoman attached to star.

The film is based on Irene Nemirovsky’s novel, which she wrote (but never completed) during World War II, shortly before she was arrested and taken to a concentration camp, where she died. The novel was finally published in 2004 and praised for its firsthand look at the ever-changing situation for French people as the Nazis took over.

Michelle Williams will play Lucille Angellier, a young woman in Nazi-occupied France who falls for a young German soldier (Schoenaerts) while her husband is off fighting the war. Her only escape is playing the piano, which piques the interest of the soldier who was a composer before the war. Scott-Thomas is set to play Lucille’s mother-in-law.

Saul Dibb (The Duchess) will direct, with production scheduled to begin next spring in London.

Breaking Dawn 2 Tops US Thanksgiving Box Office

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was slightly mixed fortunes at US cinemas over the Thanksgiving weekend, as while overall the box office set a record of $290 million for the five days from Thursday to Sunday, the biggest new entry, Dreamworks Animation’s Rise Of The Guardians, disappointed with a $32 million opening to place fourth on the chart.

It’s the worst start for a DWA movie since Flushed Away in 2006 and particularly disappointing as it was Thanksgiving. The studio will be hoping that as the film has a Christmassy theme, it can continue to attract audiences through December.

The top three spots on the chart remained the same, with Breaking Dawn Part 2 taking the top spot, earning $64.02 over the five days, which is the strongest hold for any of the Twilight movies. Skyfall was second with $51.1 million. Like Breaking Dawn, it passed the $200 million mark over the weekend, and perhaps surprisingly, it’s the first Bond movie to do so.

The other main new entry may not have made as much money as Rise Of The Guardians, but still managed to outpace expectations. The Life Of Pi grossed $30 million, which is great news for a film many thought might struggle to find an audience and would have to rely on award kudos to get people into cinemas.

The long-delayed remake of Red Dawn was the only other new release in the chart, making an okay but not spectacular $22 million over the five days.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 23rd-25th November, 2012.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $64.0 $226.9
2 Skyfall $51.1 $221.7
3 Lincoln $34.0 $62.1
4 Rise Of The Guardians $32.6 $32.6
5 Life Of Pi $30.1 $30.1
6 Wreck-It Ralph $23.0 $149.5
7 Red Dawn $22.0 $22.0
8 Flight $11.3 $74.8
9 Silver Linings Playbook $5.9 $6.4
10 Argo $5.1 $98.1

Susan Boyle Musical Biopic Picked Up By Fox Searchlight

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Britain’s Got Talent has already spawned one movie, with a film about mobile phone salesman turned singer Paul Potts already coming in 2013, with James Corden in the lead role. Now long gestating plans for a film about Susan Boyle are moving forward with Deadline reporting that Fox Searchlight has snapped up the rights to the stage musical I Dreamed A Dream, which is based on Boyle’s life.

The show toured the UK this year, with Elaine C. Smith playing Boyle, with the singer herself showing up at the end to sings a song or two. The musical is decribed as a fairytale version of Susan’s life, starting with her being deprived of oxygen at birth, causing lifelong learning difficulties, and going through her life, including the lack of a romantic life and family troubles (the death of a sister, etc.), before going through what happened with Britain’s Got Talent, and the massive success of her debut album.

At the moment no screenwriter or director is attached, but the aim is to put together ‘a sensitive and honest biopic infused with music’. The original show is a jukebox musical, using well known songs, but it’s not known if the film will follow that.

Larry Hagman, Dallas’ JR Ewing, Dies Aged 81

November 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s only a few months since Larry Hagman returned to the role he is most famous for, JR Ewing, in the new version of Dallas. It will sadly be his last hurrah, as it’s been revealed that he’s passed away, aged 81, after suffering from throat cancer.

While Hagman became iconic playing JR in the wildly successful Dallas, which ran from 1978-1991, he was already well known to audiences thanks to the likes of I Dream Of Jeannie (1965-1970). The son of legendary Broadway actress Mary Martin, Hagman started his career on the stage, before enrolling in the US Air Force. Once he’d completed his service he went back to the theatre but also began making appearances on screen.

Real fame came thanks to I Dream Of Jeannie. After that series ended he appeared in other sitcom such as The Good Life and Here We Go Again, as well as guest starring in various other shows. Hagman also appeared in several movies, such as the musical Applause, The Eagle Has Landed and Superman, although this was an era when TV actors generally stayed on TV and movie actors were solely in films.

He became an icon around the world thanks to Dallas, and continued to appear in guest roles in TV series after that show ended, such as Nip/Tick and Desperate Housewives, as well as taking supporting roles in movies such as JFK, Nixon, and Primary Colors. However his career was complicated by health problems. He first got cancer in 1995, which necessitated a liver transplant. He recovered and vowed to stay away from drink and nicotine.

It was revealed a few months ago that he had throat cancer, which at the time he described as treatable. Sadly it turns out that wasn’t the case. He passed away at Medical City Dallas Hospital in Dallas, Texas. It is said Dallas co-star Linda Evans was at his side.

Larry Hagman – September 21, 1931-November 23, 2012 – RIP.
