Ted Tops The US Box Office, With Magic Mike Also Overperforming

July 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was a good weekend for R-rated movies at the US box office, with both Ted and Magic Mike beating out predictions with great opening weekend numbers. Seth MacFarlane’s feature film directorial debut, Ted, came out on top with a superb $54.1 million, the highest number ever for an original R-rated comedy (although behind The Hangover II and Sex And the City if you count established comedy franchises). People obviously liked the idea of a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear.

Magic Mike had to settle for second spot, but a $39 million debut is still impressive, especially considering it only cost about $7 million to make. It certainly seems there were a lot of people waiting for the male stripper film, as it made almost half its weekend money on Friday.

There were a couple other new entries in the top 10, with Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection coming fourth with a decent $26.3 million. That’s lower than the last couple of Madea movies, but still a very strong take on a busy weekend and proves Perry is still a force to be reckoned with, especially amongst African-American audiences. The Chris Pine starrer People Like Us, which was the week’s only real underperformer, taking $4.3 million to place 10th on the chart.

Take a look below for the box office top 10 for the weekend of June 29th-July 1st.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Ted $54.1 $54.1
2 Magic Mike $39.1 $39.1
3 Brave $34.0 $131.6
4 Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection $26.3 $26.3
5 Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted $11.8 $180.0
6 Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter $6.0 $29.0
7 Prometheus $4.9 $118.2
8 Moonrise Kingdom $4.8 $18.4
9 Snow White And The Huntsman $4.4 $145.5
10 People Like Us $4.3 $4.3

Cee Lo Green On For Can A Song Save Your Life?

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cee Lo Green is going to the movies, as it’s been announced that he’s joined the cast of Can A Song Save Your Life?, from Once director John Carney. He joins a cast that also includes Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, Adam Levine and Catherine Keener.

In the film, seduced by dreams of making it in the big city, Gretta (Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend (Levine) move to New York to pursue their passion for music. She’s heartbroken when he dumps her for the fame and fortune of a big solo contract, leaving her all on her own. Left to sleep on the couch of an old friend, Gretta reluctantly agrees to play an open mic night before departing the city for home. Her world takes a turn for the better when a down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) stumbles upon her singing and is immediately captivated by her raw talent and inspiring authenticity – they may be each other’s last chance to turn their lives around.

Recruiting street musicians, amateurs, and professionals borrowed from the posse of Troublegum (Green), a hip-hop artist he discovered years ago, Dan throws himself into producing for Gretta. Fueled by his enthusiasm, Gretta begins to develop confidence as a performer and songwriter. Dan hopes that his new direction will repair his marriage with his estranged wife Miriam (Keener) and reclaim the respect of his daughter Violet (Steinfeld). Somewhere between friendship and their love of music, the two strangers strike a chord that captures the hearts of everyone around them, proving that every great story has its own soundtrack.

Production starts on July 2nd in New York City

Silver Linings Playbook Trailer – Bradley Cooper has mental issues

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Well this looks like it might be fun. David O’Russell’s film has an incredible cast including Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker (making his first non Rush Hour film appearance since Jackie Brown in 1997). Here’s the synopsis: ‘Life doesn’t always go according to plan. Pat Solatano (Cooper) has lost everything – his house, his job, and his wife. He now finds himself living back with his mother and father after spending eight months in a state institution on a plea bargain. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation. All Pat’s parents want is for him to get back on his feet – and to share their family’s obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles football team. When Pat meets Tiffany (Lawrence), a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives.’

Marvel Planning Guardians Of The Galaxy For 2014?

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been known for quite a long time that Marvel has pencilled in two release dates for movies in 2014. One of them is Captain America 2, but it hasn’t been know what the other is. There’s been speculation it’ll be a Black Panther film, while some have side it’s likely to be Guardians Of The Galaxy. Now Latino Review and Variety say it’s going to be the latter, with the official announcement likely to come at Comic-Con.

It’s suggested the film will tie into the Marvel movie universe, and that that Thanos, who was revealed in the end credits of The Avengers, will be in the movie and that it will set up the events of The Avengers 2. It’s also said that the project will take its inspiration from the 2010 six-issue arc known as The Thanos Imperative, and will include the character Nova, who isn’t traditionally known as one of the members of the Guardians.

Like The Avengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy is a superhero team, largely made up of lesser know characters such as Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. It’s not known exactly which characters will feature. Expect more news soon. Assuming the info is correct, it’ll hit cinemas May 2014.

First Official Images From Disney’s Paperman

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of interest in Disney’s upcoming animated short, Paperman, which is due to play in front of the studio’s upcoming movie, Wreck-It Ralph. Now new images from the short have debuted over at EW. The innovative black-and film, directed by John Kahrs, blends traditional hand-drawn animation with CGI and attempts to create a new look.

The short is about a man who believes the woman of his dreams works in the building across the street. Armed with a stack of paper, he tosses paper airplanes towards her window, in hopes of getting her attention. The director, who served as an animator on The Incredibles and Tangled, spoke about the power of hand-drawn animation, and how it may make a comeback, “Drawing can have a really powerful, visceral effect on the viewer. You can create anger and surprise or anguish with just a few lines of a pencil. But it can’t just be the same thing it was. I think for 2D to be revitalized, you have to figure out a way to make it new again.”

Producer Kristina Reed commented, “CG has stomped to the forefront, and completely owns the space of the photo-real image and all the surrounding area around that. Paperman is, for us, a part of the larger conversation: ‘How can visuals look – other than moving slowly, more and more, toward photo-real?'”

Edgar Wright Completes Ant-Man Test Reel

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ant-Man is one of those films that seems to be constantly talked about but never seems to actually move forward. Edgar Wright has been attached to direct for years and he always suggests it’s just over the horizon – but this time it appears that might actually be true, as THR reports Wright has just completed a test-footage reel for the movie.

Based on the Marvel Comic, Ant-Man is about Hank Pym, a scientist who devises a way to shrink his size and control an army of ants with a special helmet he’s constructed. Last month, Wright said he hopes to shoot this superhero movie sometime next year, after he wraps on The World’s End with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The filmmaker co-wrote the Ant-Man screenplay with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).

These early reels are often used to gauge a response from the studio about a filmmaker’s style or the overall look of a particular project. Directors such as Zack Snyder (300), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), and Guillermo del Toro (At the Mountains of Madness) made similar reels to help their projects get the green light.

We’ll have to wait and see if Edgar Wright’s reel will lead to the new Ant-Man feature. It’s also led to speculation that if Marvel likes the footage, it could be shown at Comic Con.

Tommy Lee Jones Up For Luc Besson’s Malavita

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s never a bad idea to cast Tommy Lee Jones in a movie, and Luc Besson obviously agress, he’s now got the action in talks to join his crime drama Malavita, according to Variety. Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer are already attached to star.

The story follows a notorious organised crime family that needs to be relocated to France under a witness protection program. They find themselves giving in to old habits and falling back into the ‘family’ way. Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer play husband and wife in the drama. Tommy Lee Jones meanwhile will be a FBI agent who looks after the family and helps them blend into their new environment.

Luc Besson adapted the screenplay from a book by author Tonino Benacquista, titled Badfellas. Shooting begins in July with the studio shooting for a 2013 release.

Disney Plans Big Hero 6 Animated Movie

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Disney bought Marvel back in 2009, most fans thought it would only be a matter of time before the studio made an animated feature based off the huge stable of superhero characters that came with the acquisition. Now, it seems that time may have come, as Disney is developing an animated movie based on the rather obscure Marvel comic book Big Hero 6.

Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau created the title in 1998, which is about a superhero team comprised of Silver Samurai, Sunfire, GoGo Tomago, Honey Lemon, Hiro Takachiho and Baymax, who are brought together by the Japanese government to do their bidding.

Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) is attached to direct, after pitching the idea to Disney Animation chief John Lasseter. The studio is currently looking for writers to tackle this comic book adaptation. It is believed that Disney is eyeing a 2014 release date, with the movie leading into the release of The Avengers 2. (Source: Blue Sky Disney)
